. . Jen pokoutnosti dobře slyší a vrhá tam svůj jazyčník. Trud, který zatím vystál jamku, chmolem chvátá v těsnou tram . . . V kdejakém krámku plném sámků, v pekařství pýchy, v hrozbách jam, v sladovnách příštích opojení, v cukrárnách, jež půst dlouhý plení, a ve všech krocích jdoucích sem lze vidět mrtvých umírání a jiných mrtvých jedno přání: tupit a luskat pod nosem. Vladimír holan DREAM Published in May 1939 by František Borový in Prague In Memory of Velemír Chlebnikov Like a knot in a wooden coffin the Moon turns hard above the town… Just wind and sunrays are left wanting to write obliquely on the ground of all that Heaven is not taking, which makes God’s hand so cold and shaking, the hand that soon begins to pour petrol on history’s new pyre and, through magnifying glass of ire, burn hunger, loot and bloodshed’s gore. This writing, on the ground well scripted, the writing that with revenge strikes, was idly gulped, then fast vomited by cyclists on their braying bikes, speeding to low dives from their races to find some dreams and lovely faces where, for a cheap song, one can drink, and women, attired in tinsel, around their necks some fox or weasel, guess always whatever you think. A little farther, night is falling, palpably somehow, lone and blind. One would say surely it likes rolling a cigarette, since, in its mind, a touch already brings much pleasure. And truly so, at one palm’s measure, it moves, supinely solid, long, all sucking pores prepared and ready… It only hears what’s truly shady when trusting in – its fork’ed tongue. Grief, which embosses little hollows, rushes with crowds in a tight tram… In all kinds of stalls, full of baubles, in bakeries, proud of their fame, in malt-houses of intoxication, in sweet-shops of fasting spoliation, at every step that’s walking by, one can observe the dead expire and others having one desire: to snap their fingers and vilify. . . Bez oddechu a stále v chůzi tma žene stavby do figur a žene tam i stromy z dáli a uličky a sloupy, skály – a jejich vrchol, starý hrad, k pranýři poutá řemen řeky . . . Skřek havranů,skřek dávnověký, ač chtivý z věků spíše brát, Subtly enlarged, the germ of horror crunches the blood-stream of our fear… Without a moment’s rest, so thorough is darkness in its drive to rear even the trees into strange figures and lanes and cliffs and rocky pillars, while, at the top, a bastion pillories the belt of a river… The shrieks of ravens, always eager rather to take from what’s long gone, Bubny a černá sukna hází na hypnotisovaný čas, jenž marně hledá v sobě basi a celé lidstvo vněm jen zas, lidstvo, jež rádo ptá se zšeda: co s nesmrtelnem, které nedá i věčné mládí, mladý dech? To lidstvo, které k pláči nutí křen oslav jen, strouhaný s chutí k masu a krvi válek všech. throw black sepulchral decoration at a stunned time that seeks in vain in itself some firmer foundation and mankind seeks in it the same! Mankind that enjoys asking glumly: what is immortal, when it hardly brings timeless life with youthful breath? Mankind that grates its all desire like horse-radish – an appetiser – on blood of wars and meat of death. Jak potom jihnou . . . Skoro na pel, oplodňující zápory, když z roztlučených hrnců kapel vstříc tekou vlajky, prapory a pudy, chtící hlasy všemi, by matky poražených zemí kojily za trest štěňata; ty pudy, které sotva vzruší uřezat mužství, nos i uši všem, kdož se chytli v tenata. How sentimental!… Pollen, flying to inseminate what’s negative, when flags and banners are welcoming brass bands’ cracked pots on march to cleave through instincts for pre-planned formations of mothers from defeated nations, punished, when forced to nurse their pets. Those instincts barely feel elated when genitals are mutilated (of all who got caught in their traps). . . Jen paprskům a větru zbylo ležatým písmem psáti v zem o všem, co nebe nepřijímá, z čeho je boží ruce zima, té ruce, jež má políti benzinem dějin blízké časy a lupou hněvu sžehnout asi hlad, lup a krveprolití. Like a knot in a wooden coffin the Moon turns hard above the town… Just wind and sunrays are left wanting to write obliquely on the ground of all that Heaven is not taking, which makes God’s hand so cold and shaking, the hand that soon begins to pour petrol on history’s new pyre and, through magnifying glass of ire, burn hunger, loot and bloodshed’s gore. Je skoro ticho, znalé hladit a vyhladit . . .Tak . . . V hádankách . . . Národy dupou . . . Zříš je pádit a čistit obě misky vah, vah kupeckých, vah z trhu Lític . . . Nějaká kurva v mraku kytic punčošné v duchu počítá. Ponůcky trou se obezřele o mlíčí barů v září skvělé a o svědectví očitá. It’s such a calm – well skilled in facing and effacing… No one explains… The nations tramp… You see them racing to clean both pans of weighing scales – the merchants’ scales from Furies’ markets… In clouds of flowers, nameless strumpets recount the garter-money they’ve earned. Night-guards are full of circumspection, as they spawn sperm in great reflection of bars, and watch the evident. Nalevo, stranou od baráků, ubohé lípy vaří thé na velký černý kašel vlaku, dušený v křivce protáhlé, již ruší něčí prosba klamná: „Nevypalujte zejtra kamna, věšíme prádlo! K desáté! . . . Pak opět ticho – přítulníček a pády brv a pády víček pro vše, co má být přesáté. Close to the left of shabby houses, poor lime trees serve some tea with cream relieving whooping cough that doses a curving train, shrouded in steam, stirred by the laments of a woman: “Tomorrow, don’t light up your oven! We hang out the washing at eight!”… Then, lovey-dovey silence follows Dropping down eye-lids, dropping eye-brows, with all that’s supposed to be strained. This is the time when teenage girls put shoe-trees in their bootikins. List’ning to music with many swirls, they prime their hair with little rings, rolled on thin paper strips to dangle like pegs, in the shine of a candle – and, on clean screens of memories, they agitate men without wonder. Though ripe, it’s hard to tear them asunder from roots of childhood mysteries. . . Ústenky slov se rozplývají a žhounek němot slin se nají, válen v úvalech mluvidla. This is the time when leaky witches and fortune-tellers go to sleep. They drool upon the finest stitches as if they wished to get their teeth into new planets, smelly cheeses, godlings that alcohol appeases under some lewdly dimmed light beams… Lips full of words will soon be melted by little tongues, with spittle sated, when rolled in the vale of their dreams. Toť chvíle, která líbá prsa a nudu, běloručku žen . . . Vzdor ze sobectví rád v nich mlsá sám sebou dvojně opojen, zatím co muže smrtky ženou do léčky kyčlí po kolenou, až, při pochodni nervů sťat, zavile vilnou krví zase věčnosti trochu pmoh‘ v čase a nejčistčímu bytí snad. This is the time that enjoys kisses on breasts of weary womenfolk, mixing defiance with selfishness into a thrilling double yoke, while man is forced by the Grim Reaper the trap of thighs, on knees, to enter and, nerves in flames, to meet his death. His lustful blood might help the eternal to create, in the ephemeral, a perfect being with purest breath. Záhadné zvuky škrábou sluchem brambory strachu v maloduchém a on už neví, co je tma . . . This is the time for sickly patients to sift their pulses to the ghosts, who freeze them up in their creations, monstrously simple in such voids. Strange sounds are scraping within hearing tubers of angst, peeled with dumb feeling, so they don’t know what darkness brings… Who jerks their heads? Who might have promised? As if there were, in pillows harnessed, an eagle, beating with his wings. . . Meanwhile the town, at this late hour always asleep, suddenly looks as if bereft of all its dower, when heart-breaking cries and loud hoots quickly wear out its mundane substance. Then, in no time, they become silenced by a thick chignon of false hair. What could this be?… One of weird sisters?… Now like some wine, a glass that tinkles and laugh resounds who knows from where… Jsou k závrati ty zvuky dvojí . . . . . Jsou k závrati ten sten a smíchy. Soukají vlákna ze tvé míchy a chytají v ně pohyb map. Quite dizzy is that double tuning… And even he, whom dark nooks hide when facing his fate without swooning, feels unprotected, far and wide, while everything else that’s visible imbues – though smartly invisible – and sharpens, too, its knife and claw… Head-turning are those groans, that laughter. They spin your pith to a thin raster and capture in a winning draw. . . Through oracle holes soughs great candour: how to clean stains of odium; how to plug ears with wool of thunder and firmly close one’s cranium; how to protect the myth of semen under the clay of verses, hidden from all that finds no primacy in freedom, hope, or noble action for living world’s great resurrection, in rhythm with God’s clemency… Again those tears, again that screaming Neb před zrakem co mjí, to je už bratrství a jeho rod . . . . . comes near and near to woeful folds. The wind, just lately barely streaming (cursively written on thin foils), now grows and grows and begins drumming on what has been and what’s becoming a spectre, wrapped and put away; the spectre that’s now rolling, turning funeral wreath along bald paving where my solitude passed away. What passes here before my eyesight is brotherhood of flesh and blood… It cuts my despair straight from upright, a sort of god-conducting rod, while it may be a mere reaction of cosmos, in its pious action to move directly to extremes, and not the way of human voices, neither the way of soundtrack traces, despite recording all our dreams… Chróm chromých svitů kmitá z ulic po houfu příšer táhnoucích . . . V popel a žíně tělo tulíc láme se v paměť každá z nich. Žebráci, slepci, hluchoněmí a jednoocí, jdoucí s těmi, již mají druhé oko zas, pak dívky, jež si odvíjely s přadýnka úst, co tušit směly a co teď vědí bez příkrs. Cramped chromous sparks explode from arcades upon the march of monstrous hordes… Bodies, in ash and horse-hair encased, shatter the mind with all their sorts. The blind, the mute-deaf, every beggar, the one-eyed, too, stay close together with those who saved the other eye. Then girls, who, in a winding motion, spew from their mouths some fuzzy notion of what, unadorned, they can spy. Přídešné v šatnách ne-hry jaté antické larvy chtějí ven . . . a děti (ještě baculaté tím, oč jsou matky hlubší žen) jimotvírati pomáhají a bušit pěstí na čas bájí, kdy prostor sám byl osudem . . . Hmatají vpřed i vzad i stranou a nemajíce na vybranou naslouchají jen krutým zdem. Breathily voiced in non-play storerooms, the antique masks want to break out… And children (in their chubby heirlooms, pointing to mothers, deep and round), helping to open all that’s urgent, pound with their fists into the legend of time when space kept its own fate… They touch once forth, once back, then sideways, and, with no choice for better hey-days, they hear but walls through a frail gate. . . Krev ještě dlouho potom crčí . . . I z jinochů se vyvalí . . . Všichni jsou v černém . . . Pohleď přeci: Melanchlainové dávnověcí šat stejně černý mívali. A horse, to a tombstone harnessed, baulked up in forceful Empires and smashed them to a heap of facets, sensing the breath of vampires on its neck, like leeches clinging… It’s long time gone, yet it goes bleeding… Even young boys are drained of blood… All dressed in black… Look, nothing alters: even the ancient witchcraft doctors used to put on black cloak and hood. A similar, saturnine colour embroiders every senile man, flung straight into this prickly hour from the wet rock of their disdain. And youngsters, too, drag their black vestments under some obscure cat-o’-nine-tails, the ones that destiny berates. Their faces are pale, their eyes leering, each of their ear-lobes shows an earring (the sign of serfdom in Russian states). Studené zvuky s nimi plují a každý, každý ví, co ty: to nástroje si připravují porodní báby nicoty. Vrtí se, rejdí, stále bdělé utáhnout mašle kokrhele a vbodnout zrůdná kladélka . . . To potom cítíš v malé chvíli, jak naděje plod ušlechtilý je sžrán číms, co při tom lká Cold are the sounds that find their bearing and everyone knows what he sees: pitiless midwives are preparing their instruments of nothingness. Always alert, they romp and fidget to tighten the bow of each one’s bonnet and thrust in vile, abortive bones… In a short time you then feel strongly how the proud fruit of hope is slowly devoured by something that bemoans, a co tím lkáním snadno mate, jako nějakým mimikry . . . Puchýřky vteřin vrchovaté okřály na třaskavé kry, do kterých vráží mroucí city a rudé mžitky fatality až k výbuchu, v němž ti jsou své, kdož vyrostli i v dané změti a dosáhnou už (bez paměti) na barvy, barvy šílenství. and, with that moaning, easily perplexes, like with some sort of parody… Brimful are blebs of time’s reflexes of bursting ice-float’s prosody, battered by moribund feelings, while red spots dance with deadly dealings until they burst. Yet some men see: those who matured – despite commotion – and reached (without the slightest notion) all colours of their lunacy. To potom prostor znou kyše lemuroidním zástupem. The space again is turning sour from all that packed lemur-like horde. Lower than low and high and higher, drawn as a blade on a coarse board, deep in the cages, something clatters. It must be short-lived, mundane matters and also those in whom the soul once used to find cheap board and lodging; the soul, on short notice this morning, has left there just some vermin ghoul. . . Oklepky toho najdeš v tepu, když pavouci ze svého dřepu skokavě zježí dutý pud. Tambours have started demolishing crude concepts of the sense of life. Their hands, accustomed well to itching, flash, here and there, through a dark night, till hot and sparkling fire-raisers cook themselves to their deepest layers like Easter eggs, tied to a whip… In the heart’s beat, you’ll find their fragments, when spiders, from their squatting knee-bends, prick up their hollow urge and leap. . . Tak brouci ztratí naráz krovky, dým svíce táhne přes můru, The fugues of cymbals crack, then wallop the alms that rickets may redeem. Lancers, from rat nests in full gallop, stigmatize your pellucid dream. The smell of dead men stamps on maggots, so be prepared for nasal vowels of lemur-like scatter-brained schemes… Beetles then lose their hard wing casing and flick’ring candles start erasing in rising smoke your nightmare dreams. tak věčnoměr co měřit nemá, když zastavil se okamžik, jenž ze cinémado cinéma rád dostával zde lehký smyk, kde nesmrtelný fantom vidí v přesnicích touhy žasnout lidi, křížence času s obrazy . . . Ach, čas a obraz, obraz, slovo: troseční právo básníkovo sbírat k n im rámy na hrázi, Eterno-meters should not measure the instants that stopped in their speeds. From one cinema to the other, they have enjoyed their lightened skids to where famed phantoms could discover unleavened lust that makes men wonder at cross-breeds of image and time… Oh, time and image, image, language: the poet’s right to claim the wreckage of frames without reason or rhyme. na hrázi božských ztroskotání prkýnka, která šplíchl sem dar milosti svou tajnou dlaná, zvědavý, co z nich stvoří zem . . . Zem bědná, bědná, bědná, bědná, ale zem pouze jednou jedna a jako jednu zřít ji chci . . . Bože, zda zříš ji též, jak leží? Či přes tvou četbu lidé běží co knižní štírci malouncí? Oh, rhyme and reason of God’s shipwrecks: those breadboards splashed here by His grace as presents from His palm of secrets, curious what the Earth creates… The woeful Earth! So woeful, woeful! The only one though and thus, hopeful. I want to see it for aeons… God, dost Thou see it as Thy reading? And men across it, running, speeding like minuscule book scorpions? Tep srdcí všech, to nýtování rozborceného života? To jařmo, které obřad zlatí, ty splašky lží, jež kanál vrátí? . . . Proč žádná telefonistka nás nespojí s tím přes – naproti? Ne zánik ještě a už bezživotí, toť, co v nás lká, toť, co v nás lká. Can you behold that masquerading, that giggling, with its brimstone laugh? Those hearts thumping, rivets hamm’ring into a fractured, ruined life? That yoke, so gilt by ceremony, that swell of lies no sewer can carry?… Why none of switchboard girls knows how to connect us with our neighbour? Not dead yet, we’ve begun to moulder; this is what moans in us, what moans. Kdejaký brloh, díry, sluje na droždí pekel kysnou v smích . . . Štěkání lišek šišečkuje pohřební stuhy na rakvích. Mor v mordýách mordů slibně špoulí a balí jazyk z žhoucí kouli, z nž srší vábné sliby drog. A devil’s lair turns any grotto, or dump, or den to surly brawls… Some barking foxes lisp the motto on ribbons for their funerals. Murderous plagues at nozzles nuzzle, wrapping the tongue in a glowing muzzle, with promises of winsome drugs. A drunkard spits across a railing upon the whetstone of wet paving to hone his steps by lurching tugs. Pak posunky už vlastně vztekle křísí umělým dýcháním jek průvodů a tváře leklé, jež jakýs obrovitý mim zahání hanou přes kurhany, kde z žírných chmur jsou v kruhy brány a tančí v hrubých rubáších . . . Brčadla jsou to, roztočená bičíky tryzny, až jde pěna, již mízdří jenom šikmý líh. Then grimaces and enraged gestures resuscitate, with kiss of life, the yells from parades of faceless creatures that, by some giant mimes of strife, are, full of shame, to grave-mounds driven and then, in gloom, to high orbs risen, to dance there in rough overalls… All like some grumblers, brought to spinning by whip of homage, foaming, screaming, then tanned by murky alcohols. Houf funí, mžitky převívaje a zpošika mu k tomu hraje trácení v břiše démonů, dokud zlé bdění nevymkne si v koleně slov svou nohu běsí, když klopýtne o kámen snu. Hundreds of fingers slide in gauntlets made of some mice and moles’ fine hides. They tear the lungs of wailing currents, as wings may do, when reaching heights. Crowds snort and pant, their twinkles fawning, accompanied by slanted frowning of ghouls, who pass digested winds, till some grim nightmare, in its leggings, dislocates knee-joints from their phrasings, when stumbling at the stone of dreams. .
