Annual Meeting 2014 We have overviewed and closed activities of the last year at our Sokol Annual Meeting on December 6, 2014. Twenty four Sokol members arrived to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, slightly more than one third of our membership which currently stays for thirty men and thirty four women. It was good to hear from Brother Burda that our finances are in order and our last year spending did not cross the amount planned for the year. The Grant from the Foreign Ministry of Czech Republic we have received was a welcomed help in organizing several concerts and for the celebration of Sokol San Francisco 110th Anniversary. Based on our financial reserves, the Meeting has approved 2015 budget at $35,000. Sister Dusatko said that our Unit will keep all our regular activities, Walks, Picnics, Dinners and Dances and, if there is a folklore festival in San Diego in the year of 2015, our Sokol will organize a trip to this action. We will also continue cooperating with the Czech and Slovak organizations in the area as well as the Pacific Sokol District and the Consulate of Czech Republic. We will also keep close cooperation and support of the Czech School of California. In a discussion, members asked about the results of the XX American Sokol Convention. Sister Zivny said that under the new ASO President, Sister Jean Hruby, the ASO seems to be ready and willing to pay more attention to Czech and Slovak heritage and cultural life. Before the end, the new Sokol Board was voted for and all the candidates approved unanimously. See picture 1 on page 2 Zelmira Zivny ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ New Year's Eve, December 27, 2014. Under the crystal chandelier of Crowne Plaza Hotel, so Bohemian in their glory, 62 people set out to celebrate passing of another year, not just an ordinary year, but one hundred and tenth since founding of our San Francisco Unit. Well, this evening Sokol did not show her age. From the very start there was a club atmosphere, clusters of people forming where information about the health, travel, kids and visits were exchanged faster than Smartphone could ever manage. Some Genie, with Sokol's cooperation, opened a bar stacked with bottomless bottles, three course dinner offered choice of flank steak, chicken breast and a vegetarian dish. Topped with an excellent, if decadent, pastry. With all that calories intake what better way to get rid of some of them than to twist and turn to the tunes of Joe Domitrowich's band 'Capricious Accordion'. Our Moravian friends could not resist and sang along, like during the "Good old times" in our San Mateo Sokol Hall, where we were up until the wee hours of morning, ignoring the repeated attempts of the custodian to send us home. No wonder we reminiscence, there are so many fond memories of our activities in Sokol, one couple met at a Sokol dance married, and they are still together. Another reason for the younger generation to join us, who knows.... The raffle always adds excitement to our dances. There is certain magic to it, even if you get a five dollar price for ten dollars’ worth of tickets and you feel like a big winner. Sokol memorabilia and Czech crystal were some of the prices. It's amazing how many faithful members and friends we meet year after year, some we have known longer than our own family. Let's keep meeting whenever we have the opportunity and you do not have to wait too long ‐ the April Masaryk dance shall be here and the Czech School is preparing a student performance. And who would not be proud to see a little island of our language living and prospering in the ocean of English. See pictures no. 2, 3, 4 on page 2 Happy New Year! Zdenek Vernak. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Around the lake Have you missed the Walk for Health around Lake Merritt? What a pity, because it was a wonderful walk on a beautiful day. We walked more than three miles around a lake which is not a lake but a small bay of the Bay, a small finger of the big Pacific Ocean. Page 6 The birds were enjoying the salty water of Lake Merritt and people around were clearly enjoying the birds. The Lake was the first official wild life refuge, designated in 1870 so no wonder the birds are coming here. Such an important place and we could enjoy it for free, walking, chatting and wondering where all the other Sokol members were. I think you did not get that e‐mail from Brother Zdenek Vernak. He posted it maybe a week ago and it was quite interesting. Zdenek quoted a Czech newspaper iDnes.cz: “Snadnou cestou za zdravím jsou skupinové procházky, doporučují vědci“. Yes, the group walks are an easy way to your health, the scientists recommend. “They are efficient, accessible, do not require any special skills, training or lessons, no equipment, either. They are beneficiary for your blood pressure and heart rhythm, they lower cholesterol level, improve lung capacity and they even help to prevent depression.“ So friends, what are you waiting for? Such a life saving exercise, for free, in the middle of winter, when other people are freezing and shoveling snow. Don’t you feel that touch of pre‐spring depression? Isn’t you r blood pressure a little on the higher side? And let’s not talk about your cholesterol, you know it needs to improve. You should really do something and there is nothing better than a walk with friends. Think it over and check our Calendar of Events. Our next Walk will take us to Alameda and you will have a chance to improve all of the above problems. Looking forward to see you there. You will find that regular stretching will do the following things: • Reduce muscle tension and make the body feel more relaxed • Help coordination by allowing for freer and easier movement • Increase range of motion • Help prevent injuries such as muscle strains. (A strong, flexible, pre‐stretched muscle resists stress better than a strong, stiff, un stretched muscle.) • Make strenuous activities like running, skiing, tennis, swimming, and cycling easier because it prepares you for activity; it‘s a way of signaling the muscles that they are about to be used. • Helps maintain your current level of flexibility, so as time passes you do not become stiffer and stiffer • Develop body awareness; as you stretch various parts of the body, you focus on them and get in touch with them; you get to know yourself. • Help loosen the mind‘s control of the body so that the body moves for “its own sake“ rather than for competition or ego • Feel good Page 7
Obituary Frank Miksa passed away on January 10th, 2015.
Frank was born as Austrian Czech in small business family. Attended Czech gymnasium in Wiena not fully integrated into Austrian system. During WW 2 could not to study and had to work in public labor service. After survival of WW2 he and his family repatriated from Russian army occupied Wiena to former Czechoslovakia and he started his study at Charles University in Prague. Not too long however. After Communist pooch in 1948 he was as foreign born expelled from University and escaped to Germany where he spent tough time in refugee camps and finally with not too many choices immigrated to Australia where he met an interesting and attractive Moravian woman Mirka. Couple got married and immigrated to California after 1950. Frank got job at Bechtel Construction Company in SF and Mirka spend her very successful carrier with food production Company in Dublin. Couple did not have any children enjoying life, social gatherings, dancing and travel all around the world. They were catholic believers and devoted American Sokol members. Frank’s health started to deteriorate more after Mirka’s death after her short illness. Unfortunately, Frank felt being in vacuum of lone‐lines and almost in isolation, which he could not easy endure. He was very devoted to his wife, friend and adviser Mirka. Friends tried to help many ways but mental devotion reflected to his whole body slow deterioration. He became ill man; many people could not understand what actually is in mind of this socially smiling, polite and always‐
elegant gentleman. Finally only with few devoted friends he liked to communicate privately. His illness continued and he felt that live does not have sense for him anymore feeling uselessness in this world he liked a lot, enjoying his memories and his library books and magazine readings, being thrifty, cautious, surprisingly trustful on occasion, and finally being cremated with only one friend present in tears. The same way like with his wife Mirka. Hard to tell if burden of tough life emigrant left scars in his spirit. Frank left us with deep sadness and with personal gilt staying in our mind that we could not find what was inside of his lonely mind and soul. God bless his soul. 2015 is a very special year for American Sokol as it was 150 years ago our first unit in St. Louis was founded. I’m sure all units are planning events to help celebrate. As you read in the November/December issue, President Hruby gave us a “Save the Date” message for the weekend of November 13‐15 noting that plans are underway. I just wanted to give you a brief update (plans are still being finalized) for a couple of BOI events and socials that are underway for our members. Page 8 We would like to host a special number competition for all groups that can join us that weekend (Central District has successful ones every year so we have a great foundation to follow). We are working with the 150th Anniversary Committee to plan for a evening old‐fashioned Sokol social at one of the Sokol halls in the Chicago area. We are also planning on having a volleyball tournament open to all with Mixed, Male and Female teams (if the numbers warrant). While this is going on, we are also discussing having a “Bowling for Fun” event for those non‐volleyball players. On Saturday evening we would like to have a lower‐key banquet where Sokols and Friends of Sokols of all ages can join in the fun with food, music and activities. None of us will be alive to celebrate our next 150th milestone, so please join us for this one. I sincerely hope you will support our efforts in preparing our repertoire with your attendance at this 1.5+ hour concert (with break and refreshments, of course). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson climbed El Capitan without tools Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson climbed into the history books on Wednesday after reaching the top of the 3,000ft, granite face of El Capitan without tools ‐ but the epic feat was not without sacrifice, especially for their hard‐working hands. The morning after the climbing team reached the summit and had an emotional reunion with their anxious families, they spoke about the toll the 19‐day ascent to the top had taken on their bodies. Speaking from Yosemite National Park in California, the daredevils admitted that their hands were a 'little beat' after climbing the sheer rock ‐ which is around double the height of the Empire State Building. Scaling El Capitan's Dawn Wall left the adventurers hands bleeding and torn from the grueling task of inching their way up without bolts or climbing tools, wedging their fingers and feet into tiny crevices or gripping sharp, thin projections of rock. Page 9 The two appeared at times like Spider‐Man, with arms and legs splayed across the pale stone that has been described as smooth as a bedroom wall. According to National Geographic, the preparation for the adventure would have been painstaking ‐ and meant avoiding simple tasks, such as doing the dishes, like the plague. Ahead of any climb, and in particular such a momentous one as El Capitan, climbers have to keep their fingertips in the best condition possible ‐ which means avoiding the chance for the skin to go soft or 'prune‐like' from long soakings. Good climbing skin means developing calluses thick enough to support the climber's full body weight, according to expert Andrew Bisharat. He explained: 'One of the greatest threats to a climber's success is a callus splitting open... a cracked fingertip is akin to a blown tire in the final stage of the Tour de France.' Although too much moisture is a problem, too little is no good either ‐ as the skin can become too dry and crack open. The Dawn Wall is divided into 32 climbing pitches of varying lengths of rock that the climbers mastered using only their hands and feet. According to the Guardian, climbers train their fingers on artificial holds to mimic the stress they will be under while supporting the body, often hundreds of feet in the air. January 6, 2015 Kaku, a theoretical physicist and best‐selling author, spoke at Toyota’s press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show on Monday and talked about the new Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle combines oxygen and hydrogen to create electricity. The Mirai, priced at $57,000 and available commercially later this year in California, is unique in that it combines oxygen and hydrogen molecules to generate power and only emits water — no exhaust or fumes. The car has a range of 300 miles and goes from 0‐to‐60 MPH in nine seconds. Unlike electric batteries, hydrogen tanks can be refilled in three‐
to‐five minutes. Kaku laid out his vision for the “perfect car,” and offered four requirements — all of which described the Mirai: A fuel source based on an element that’s the most plentiful in the universe: hydrogen. “Contrast that to oil,” Kaku said. “Nations will kill to secure supplies of oil.” A car with as few moving parts as possible. “In a hydrogen fuel cell car, the engine has no moving parts, whatsoever,” Kaku said. A car that emits nothing but water. “The word ‘smog’ is going to disappear from the dictionary because we are going to be entering a new age,” Kaku said. A car that’s friendly to the consumer. “Usually hydrogen cars are priced at hundreds of thousands of dollars, way beyond the pocketbook of the average person,” Kaku said. “But this car, we’re talking about the neighborhood of $50,000. As mass production, competition, and economies of scale begin to kick in — and as governments begin to subsidize the creation of refueling stations — you’re going to see that cost drop even further.” Kaku noted that Toyota engineers have assembled “critical mass” with the Mirai, given its range and acceleration abilities. “They have all the various ingredients to create critical mass to create a hydrogen society,” he said. Peninsula. Another name for the project is Cross‐Bohai‐Strait channel.
Crossing the Bohai Strait the tunnel would be 123 km long, 90 km of it under water, thus exceeding the combined lengths of the Seikan tunnel and the Channel tunnel that are currently the longest undersea tunnels on Earth.[2] Operated by China Railway Engineering Corporation the tunnel would be linked to the highspeed railway system of China. Cars would be loaded on railway carriages to make the 40 minute crossing. Currently there is a ferry service, the 2007 inaugurated Bohai Train Ferry, that crosses the strait in eight hours.[2] The project is estimated to cost 200 billion yuan (US$32 billion). It was reported in August 2014 that work is likely to commence during the 13th Five-year plan and construction would take ten years to complete.[3] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stanford's Maryam Mirzakhani wins Fields Medal BY BJORN CAREY Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor of mathematics at Stanford, has been awarded the 2014 Fields Medal, the most prestigious honor in mathematics. Mirzakhani is the first woman to ever win the prize, widely regarded as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics," since it was established in 1936. Courtesy of Maryam Mirzakhani "This is a great honor. I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians," Mirzakhani said. "I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years." Mirzakhani is the first Stanford recipient to win this honor since Paul Cohen in 1966. The award recognizes Mirzakhani's sophisticated and highly original contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems, particularly in understanding the symmetry of curved surfaces, such as spheres, the surfaces of doughnuts and of hyperbolic objects. Although her work is considered "pure mathematics" and is mostly theoretical, it has implications for physics and quantum field theory. “On behalf of the entire Stanford community, I congratulate Maryam on this incredible recognition, the highest honor in her discipline, the first ever granted to a woman,” said Stanford PresidentJohn Hennessy. "We are proud of her achievements, and of the work taking place in our math department and among our faculty. We hope it will serve as an inspiration to many aspiring mathematicians." Mirzakhani was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. As a young girl she dreamed of becoming a writer. By high school, however, her affinity for solving mathematical problems and working on proofs had shifted her sights. Mirzakhani became known to the international math scene as a teenager, winning gold medals at both the 1994 and 1995 International Math Olympiads – she finished with a perfect score in the latter competition. Mathematicians who would later be her mentors and colleagues followed the mathematical proofs she developed as an undergraduate. After earning her bachelor's degree from Sharif University of Technology in 1999, she began work on her doctorate at Harvard University under the guidance of Fields Medal recipient Curtis McMullen. She possesses a remarkable fluency in a diverse range of mathematical techniques and disparate mathematical cultures – including algebra, calculus, complex analysis and hyperbolic geometry. By borrowing principles from several fields, she has brought a new level of understanding to an area of mathematics called low dimensional topology. Firma má šest manažerů, 1 Čech a 5 Němců. Žijí v Praze. Zisk jde akcionářům, stát akcie nemá. V ČR zůstávají daně, cca 6 mld. Výroba 1 mil. aut ročně, tj. 1240 denně. Čistý zisk na jednom autě je 1500 euro (t.j. při 27 Kč/euro 50,220.000 Kč denně!). Škoda auto má vlastní elektrárnu, přebytek energie vytápí 25000 bytů v Boleslavi a je to největší zisk továrny. S Amerikou se neobchoduje, velmi náročná a drahá doprava, spíše Asie, Afrika, Evropa. Na př. Do Alžíru se vyvezlo 25000 aut a objednány jsou další. Je to velký úspěch, píší 5. ledna 2015 Káhira/Praha Desítky světových médií si všímají úspěchu českých archeologů, kteří v Egyptě objevili hrobku dosud nedoložené královny Chentkaus III. Nález oznámený v neděli je podle některých médií velmi významný pro vědu, může však prý přispět i k oživení oslabeného turistického zájmu o egyptské památky. Americká televizní stanice CNN označila na svých internetových stránkách nález za "úchvatný". Podle španělského deníku El País je objev dosud neznámé královny velmi významným úspěchem bez ohledu na to, že v některých obdobích starověkého Egypta je v rodokmenech faraónů řada bílých míst. "Ne že by bylo úplně výjimečné najít neznámé postavy v královském postavení... ale přidat královnu do historie starověkého Egypta je, vedle ohromného vědeckého přínosu, úžasně podnětná věc," uvedl španělský list. Televize Fox News na svém webu připomněla i jeden z předchozích úspěchů, jehož čeští vědci v lokalitě Abúsír nedaleko Káhiry loni dosáhli, a sice březnový objev sarkofágu a mumie významného kněze páté dynastie. Ačkoli jsou to už zhruba čtyři roky, teď Jan Hrušínský, hercův syn, vyvolal skandál. A žádá, aby se busty zase stěhovaly zpátky. Josef Kemr, Rudolf Hrušínský a Václav Havel se možná v nebi docela dobře baví. Čím? Válkou o to, kde mají jejich busty v Národním divadle stát. Už před devatenácti lety postavili v Národním divadle busty Kemra a Hrušínského vedle sebe a naproti bustě T. G. Masaryka. Jenže když v roce 2011 do Národního divadla přibyla ještě busta prezidenta Václava Havla, náhle se kolem Masaryka nedostávalo místa. A přitom bylo jasné i logické, že Václav Havel musí být někde poblíž T. G. M.. Vedení divadla proto tehdy "hlavu" Josefa Kemra přemístilo na první galerii mezi další busty činoherců. Na mistrovství světa v hokeji získal tři medaile, měl i bronz z olympijského turnaje v roce 1964 a medaili stejné hodnoty z prvního fotbalového mistrovství Evropy v roce 1960. Bubník byl posledním z takzvaných obojživelníků, sportovců, kteří dokázali na vrcholové úrovni zvládat více odvětví. »Oba sporty jsem miloval stejně,« řekl. Bubník se podílel na zisku všech 11 hokejových titulů Zbrojovky Brno, v nejvyšší soutěži zaznamenal 300 branek. Dalších 121 jich přidal v reprezentaci a v Klubu hokejových střelců deníku Sport mu patří desáté místo. »Je to pro všechny hluboká ztráta. Odešla největší legenda klubu. Rodině a všem blízkým vyjadřujeme upřímnou soustrast,« uvedl majitel Komety Libor Zábranský. Řekl, že by rád byl, kromě transplantací obličeje či rukou, schopen rekonstruovat i další části těla, například nohy či břišní stěnu. Tým chirurga Pomahače transplantoval muži obě ruce Čtyřicetiletý Američan Will Lautzenheiser dostal před Vánocemi ten nejlepší dárek, jaký si mohl přát. V roce 2011 přišel o všechny čtyři končetiny. Lékaři z bostonské nemocnice mu transplantovali od anonymního dárce obě ruce, napsala agentura Reuters. Na léčbě se podílí i český specialista Bohdan Pomahač, který působí v zařízení jako šéf plastické chirurgie a transplantace. BEZ KOMENTÁŘE: Američan má po transplantaci obě nové ruce Před třemi lety Lautzenheiserovi museli amputovat všechny končetiny kvůli streptokokové infekci. Levou ruku mu amputovali nad loktem, pravou pod loktem. V říjnu letošního roku podstoupil unikátní devítihodinovou operaci, při které mu pětatřicetičlenný tým zdravotníků transplantoval obě ruce od „Tato osoba, která je pro mě anonymní, mi bude vždy Page 14 velmi blízká jako má vlastní kůže. Je to neuvěřitelný dárek,“ popsal na tiskové konferenci, kde zároveň vyjádřil svůj dík všem lékařům. „Lepšího pacienta byste si nemohli přát. Má správný postoj a je neuvěřitelně usilovný ve všem, co dělá,“ řekl Pomahač. Lautzenheiser zatím může hýbat jen palcem a zápěstím na pravé ruce, během několika příštích let by však měly jeho ruce získávat na funkčnosti a citlivosti. „Nejlepší je, že mohu opět držet v náručí svou lásku,“ dodal Lautzenheiser. Přesto, že je oboustranná transplantace horních končetin unikátním zákrokem, v posledních letech jich v USA provedli několik. V roce 2012 například dostal obě nové ruce americký voják, který přišel stejně jako Lautzenheizer o všechny končetiny, a to při výbuchu v Iráku. zkr, Novinky ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hra o Dismanův soubor Šárka Skaláková Management Českého rozhlasu (ČRo) s koncem tohoto roku zruší funkci sbormistrů Dismanova rozhlasového dětského souboru (DRDS), dá jim výpověď a soubor sloučí s Dětským pěveckým sborem (DPS). Rozhodnutí vyvolalo velkou vlnu odporu. Nepředcházela mu žádná veřejná diskuse, jak by si takové radikální změny u tak významného souboru žádaly. Sbormistrům Zdeně a Václavu Fleglovým, kteří dostanou výpověď, aniž se čímkoli provinili, byla tato skutečnost prostě oznámena. DRDS založil před osmdesáti lety rozhlasový a divadelní režisér, dramaturg a pedagog Miloslav Disman a nynější sbormistři Zdena a Václav Fleglovi jej úspěšně vedou 24 let. Soubor je znám svou kvalitou i v zahraničí a děti, které jím prošly, na něj vzpomínají s láskou a hrdostí. Skutečné důvody výše zmíněného rozhodnutí nejsou čitelné. Odpovědný člen managementu Jan Simon argumentoval nic neříkající rétorikou manažerského newspeaku: "Manažerské vedení bude klást důraz na umělecký rozvoj dětí", "přinese lepší zázemí pro realizaci projektů", "zvýší potenciál souboru" atp. Proč však skutečně dostanou výpověď manželé Fleglovi, řečeno nebylo. A nejspíš také nikdy nebude. Argument, že se tak stane v důsledku "reorganizace", se jeví jako zástupný. Reorganizace, jak známo, dělají podniky buď z finančních důvodů, což dle vyjádření pana Simona není tento případ, takže pak zbývá už jen druhý scénář, podle něhož se dělají reorganizace proto, aby se podniky určitých zaměstnanců zbavily. Dotčenými aktéry byl na stránkách www.zachrante‐drds.cz uveřejněn podrobný popis celé kauzy, včetně protestní petice, pod níž se během prvních deseti dní shromáždilo dva tisíce podpisů. Mezi protestními hlasy v tisku i na internetu jsou například Marek Eben, Ondřej Neff, Pavel Kohout, Petr Vichnar a další veřejně známé osobnosti, z nichž mnohé v minulosti Dismanovým souborem prošly. O skutečných důvodech reorganizace Dismanova souboru a DPS a zrušení míst sbormistrů DRDS můžeme jen spekulovat, ale z faktu, že k diskusi muselo dojít až pod tlakem veřejnosti, až poté co rozhlasový management rozhodnutí učinil a schválil, je zřejmé, že vedení rozhlasu o žádnou diskusi ve skutečnosti nestálo. Ba obávalo se, že by se Zdena a Václav Fleglovi bránili, a protože jsou oblíbení a svoji práci dělají dobře, souborové děti i jejich rodiče by je vehementně podpořili. Proč jim tedy dávat zbraně do rukou dopředu. Přesto by byl tento způsob šťastnější pro všechny zainteresované. Postupem, který management Českého rozhlasu zvolil, na sebe nevrhl dobré světlo. Nese bohužel znaky autoritativního, mnohdy až arogantního chování novodobých manažerských "elit", nepovažujících za nutné znát obory, které řídí. V důsledku toho zpravidla těžce podceňují ty, kteří obor skutečně ovládají a podle toho s nimi také jednají. Plody jejich práce si však rádi přivlastňují a považují se za povolané k tomu, aby s nimi nakládali zcela dle své libovůle. Zde se nabízí paralela k tématu problému britských univerzit, který opakovaně otevřel Jan Čulík na Britských listech. Jediným měřítkem, podle něhož manažeři britských univerzit nyní jednají a vytvářejí strategii, kterou pak vnucují akademickým pracovníkům, jsou peníze. As we were leaving the front door to get in a cab, the cat ran back in the living room. We didn't want to leave her in the house alone as we worry it may get the parrot. My wife got in the cab and I went inside the house to get the cat out again. As I was looking for the cat, my wife didn't want the cab driver to know the house would be empty that evening, and told him I was saying good night to my mother. When I finally got inside the cab, I updated my wife, "Sorry it took me so long. The crazy nut was hiding under the bed. I had to prod her with a hanger to get her out. She tried to get away and I had to hold her by her neck and wrap her in a blanket. I then dragged her outside and threw her in the yard. I sure hope she won't poop in the vegetable garden again."
