Cosmetician
is a person professionally trained in the use of cosmetics, such as face creams, body
lotions, etc. that make the skin more beautiful or attractive
a beautician
Cosmetic
is often used in its plural form "cosmetics"
a powder, cream or lotion that is applied on a person´s face and body in order to look
more beautiful and attractive
a make-up or beauty product
Cosmetologist
There is a slight difference between a "cosmetician" and a "cosmetologist".
Cosmetician is someone who sells or applies cosmetics or works in a beauty parlour,
while cosmetologists are experts in the use of cosmetics, or beauty specialists.
Initially, the most well-known cosmeticians sold makeup, skin care products, and hair care
products door to door. These much-loved Avon ladies brought beauty and makeup into
women's homes, recommending beauty products for every skin type and colouring.
Today's cosmeticians still work door-to-door, but more often than not they have taken their
talents for sales and makeup application into the public forum. Department stores are full of
cosmeticians, representing different brands at makeup and skin care counters. They also
work in stores devoted to one product line, or in stores that carry a number of products.
Cosmeticians have a number of roles. First, they must demonstrate the products. This can
be done through photographs and video, or by applying the makeup directly to the
customer's face. They may only sample a lipstick, or they may give the customer a complete
makeover using a number of products at once.
Cosmeticians are also responsible for selling products. This means they must become
experts in the supplies they have for sale. They must also be sure to record all sales,
document services, and restock supplies when they run low.
Cosmeticians do what they can to make people feel good about themselves. They consult
with their customers and suggest different products until they feel satisfied they have found
the very thing that will work for each individual client.
Which word is closer synonym with "cosmetician" - "beautician" or "cosmetologist"?
Name some examples o cosmetics mentioned in the text.

What other expressions is sometimes used for some cosmeticians who are
specialized just in one cosmetic brand?

READING COMPREHENSION
Our hands are very important to
us. We write with them, we touch
things with them, ... We don´t just
touch things but also some very
close people, mainly the people
who we love.
That is perhaps why we want to
have our hands also healthy, soft
and beautiful.
We use them very often. That is
why hygiene is very important.
What part of the body do you wash
most often? Let me guess. Hands. We usually don´t use just water, warm is more pleasant
than cold, of course. Very often we use some soap. How many times a day? Lots of times,
right? And so our hands are very often dry. Well, sometimes we apply some hand cream.
Nevertheless, we don´t care for our hands we should. And that´s why such a visit in a beauty
salon is very helpful.

12 How to pluck your eyebrows
Get a good pair of tweezers. If the tweezers are
not good, the process of plucking can take much
longer and it can be more painful.
Soften the skin around your eyebrows. When the
skin there is soft, plucking is easier and less
painful. For example, you could put a washcloth
into hot water and place it on the eyebrows for two
minutes. It will open the pores.
Hold a pair of tweezers in your hand like you would a pencil.
Place the tip of the tweezers at the root of the hair you want to pluck. Get as close to the root
of the hair as possible and pull, always pulling in the direction of hair growth.
Continue like this until you have finished plucking, then repeat on the other brow.
a) In the picture label these: eyebrows, eyelashes, tweezers
b) In the text underline all adjectives.

MY STUDY BRANCH
14 READING COMPREHENSION
I study at the Secondary Business and Services School because I want to become a
cosmetician. I chose this branch because it is very interesting and I like making up and
making massages and finally I want to get Maturita certificate. The study takes 4 years and
right now I am finishing the last year of my study. The study is finished with Maturita exam.
This study branch is very interesting. The most exciting is our practical training. We have it
3 days in two weeks – always on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. We have either morning or
afternoon shift. Our morning shift starts at quarter to seven and finishes at half past two. We
have one snack break and one lunch break. Our afternoon shift starts at half past ten and
finishes at six o’clock. We also have two breaks.
We have the training in our specialized training room which is on the ground floor in
Karoliny Světlé Street school. There are some couches, chairs and some useful equipment,
for example – a vaporizer, a ionizer, UV lamp, and some others. You can also find lots of
cosmetics, for example facial cleanser, cleansing lotion, facial soap, different kinds of
cream, cotton wool pads, scissors, tweezers, make-up remover, mascara, eye liners,
etc. Each cosmetician has her own suitcase with some cosmetics.
What do we do in our training classes? Everything that a cosmetician does - manicure,
pedicure , massages. make ups, etc. We also work in our school beauty salon. The
beauty salon is open every day except Saturday and Sunday. People come to our beauty
salon to relax and to become healthier and more beautiful.
At school we have theoretical and practical classes. So we study Czech, two foreign
languages – English and German or Russian, Maths, Civics, History, PE, IT and other
general subjects. However, we also have some vocational subjects, such as Cosmetics,
Hygiene, Economics or Art. We have also practical training which I have already
mentioned.
After Maturita most cosmeticians find their jobs at beauty salons, wellness centres or in
shops selling cosmetic products. There are lots of salons in Jihlava because it’s a city and
there are also some in other towns and even villages. Some beauty salons are small and you
do not need much furniture. You need just one couch and one or two chairs and a trolley
for cosmetics. There are also some large beauty salons with a reception where a
receptionist organizes times of procedures, arranges meetings, makes phone calls, etc.
a) Read the text above to write down following:

5 General skin care routines
Cleansing
It is the first essential step to any skin care routine. Cleansers are applied to wet skin over
the face and sometimes also the neck, avoiding the eyes and lips. We do it once per day
which is adequate for normal and dry skins. However, a mild cleanser should be used at
night if makeup has been worn to remove any dirt and oil. Oily skins should be cleansed
more frequently, at least twice per day. Many cleansers are also suitable for use as a
makeup remover, but a proper makeup remover is preferable, particularly, for the removal of
eye makeup.
Masks
Face masks are treatments applied to the skin for a period of time, then removed. Typically,
they are applied to a dry, cleansed face, avoiding the eyes and lips. There are many kinds of
face masks.
•
•
•
Clay-based masks use kaolin clay to transport essential oils and chemicals to the
skin, and are typically left on until completely dry. Clay-based masks should only be
used on oily skins.
Peel masks are typically gel-like in consistency. They help exfoliate the skin, hydrate,
and treat wrinkles, or treat skin tone. They are also left on to dry, and then gently
peeled off.
Sheet masks are a relatively new product that are becoming extremely popular in
Asia. Sheet masks consist of a thin cotton or fiber sheet with holes cut out for the
eyes and lips and cut to fit the contours of the face, onto which serums and skin
treatments are brushed in a thin layer.
Exfoliants
Exfoliants are products that help get rid off dry, dead skin to improve the skin's appearance.
Exfoliation improves circulation to the skin, clears blocked pores, treats acne and improves
the appearance and healing of scars. Exfoliants should be applied to wet, cleansed skin,
avoiding the eye area. Exfoliants should be rubbed into the skin in a circular motion for at
least 30 seconds. It shouldn't be done more than once per week, oily skins tolerate it twice a
week.
Toning
Toners are used after cleansing the skin to refresh it and to restore the skin´s natural pH.
They are usually applied to a cotton pad and wiped over the skin. Toners usually contain
alcohol, water, and some herbal extracts or other chemicals depending on skin type.
Moisturizing
Moisturizers are creams or lotions that hydrate the skin. Night creams are typically more
hydrating than day creams, but may be too thick or heavy to wear during the day. They are
usually applied with fingertips to the face avoiding area around the eyes.
Protecting
The sun can cause extreme damage to the skin. Sunscreen should be applied at least 20
minutes before exposure, and should be re-applied every four hours. Sunscreen should be
applied to all areas of the skin that will be exposed to sunlight.

COSMETIC CARE
7 a) Read the text and cross out the incorrect alternative.
My study branch is very / much interesting. We mainly care for appearance. Our customers
are more ladies than gentlemen. Everybody want / wants to be good looking or maybe even
attractive. And we can help them. We take care of / for all the main parts of the body which
are head, arms, hands, shoulders, body and legs with feet / foot.
Cosmeticians can offer to their customers different kinds of cosmetic care. The most typical
cosmetic care procedures are these: manicure, pedicure, messages / massages, hair
removal / remover, face care, make ups.
Doing manicure we work with hands so I should know hands in detail. Hand is not only a
palm and the back of hand, but also all toes / fingers– a thumb, an index finger, a middle
finger, a ring finger and a little finger or a pinkie. Each finger has a nail and around it there is
a cuticle which is very sensitive / sensible. We try to push the cuticle back with a cuticle
pusher. We never cut because it can cause infections. If the customer´s nails are polished,
first we have to / can remove the old polish. We need polish remover and / or cotton pads for
this procedure. Then we can give a manicure. First we always clean the hands, exfoliate the
dead skin and we also give massage. We massage all the hand with all fingers individually.
After the massage we take care of the nails who / which we file and finally we use some nail
polish. We can use different techniques for the hands, such as P-shine, French manicure, gel
nails, etc. Polishing the nails first we apply base polish, then colour and finally top coat.
Pedicure is similar but also different. We always start with a foot bath in warm / hot water.
The most important part of each pedicure is scrubbing the feet because we need to get rid of
dead skin that is hard and very pleasant / unpleasant. We also give a massage but we
massage the feet with all toes / fingers.
Very often we give our care to the face. There is a forehead, eyes, a nose, temples,
cheeks, cheekbones, a mouth with 2 lips and teeth and a chin. Describing eyes in detail I
will speak about eyebrows, eyelashes which are upper and lower, eye lids. The most
important for ours / us is the complexion. Complexion is pale, olive or suntanned. There
are a few / few types of skin – normal, dry, greasy and mixed. Some people have
problematic skin witch acne. People who / whose are not very young usually have
wrinkles. Some people might have freckles, especially after sunbathing. Each type of skin
needs different cosmetic care and different cosmetics.
We can give different kinds of massages to nearly all parts of the body but mostly we
massage backs, shoulders and legs. Before applying facial masks and make up we can also
massage the face. Doing / making a manicure we usually massage the hands.

FUTURE CAREER
After we finish the school we have 2 options – either we will get a job or we will study. We
may study at university or college or we may study here in this school. We have an
opportunity to study one more year here to become also a hairdresser. After we finish this
study we can apply for a job as a cosmetician or a hairdresser and it is no problem to find a
job then. The advantage is that we don’t have to sit any entrance examinations.
After we graduate we can find a beauty salon and get a job as a cosmetician, a
receptionist in a salon, a colour typologist, a nail designer, a manicurist, a pedicurist,
a massage therapist or a beauty salon manager or a shop assistant in a perfumery or
in a shop specialized in cosmetics.
There are quite a lot of beauty salons in cities and bigger towns but there are fewer
opportunities in smaller towns and villages. It would be nice to have an own beauty salon
but it needs some money, so first it would be good to earn some. That is why most students
who finish school first get a job.
If we apply for a job we have to write a CV which means Curriculum Vitae. This expression
is from Latin and means something like a course of your life so it is a report about your
professional life since your birth up to now.
A good CV should be clear, well-organized, easy to read and not too long. It consists of
personal details, your professional experience, education and courses, skills and
references.
First we give details about us. Personal details mean that I will write my name, gender,
address, age or date of birth, nationality, marital status, mail address, phone number and
that´s all. Writing about professional experience we have to write about all job positions we
have ever had in chronological order but we start with present or last job and go back to
history. Then we write about education. We also write about relevant courses, for example
cosmeticians have certificates for massage courses, gel nails, nail designer courses, etc. In
the next part we will write about our skills – personal skills, computer skills, language and it
is good to mention that I have a driving licence.
When I get ready for a job interview I will get dressed smart (elegant) clothes and I will
be there on time. I will try to answer all questions and ask about everything I am interested
in – place, working hours, salary, etc.

Decide if the statements are true or false. Write T for true and F for false statements.

If you want to get a job you should write a CV where you describe details of your life.
Your CV must be written in English.
It is good to write your CV by hand.
First you mention your first job position.
It is necessary to mention all courses you have attended.
26
b) Answer the questions about your future career.
The text will help you.
Do you have to immediately get a job after you graduate?
What job positions can you get?
What are you going to do after you finish school?
What does “CV” mean?
What information do you include into your CV?
How will you get ready for a job interview?
What questions should you ask in a job interview?
