MODAL VERBS (ZPŮSOBOBÁ SLOVESA)
Vyjadřují možnost, ochotu, schopnost a podobně. Následuje za nimi další sloveso v základním tvaru.
Příklad: I can swim. Umím plavat. / Mohu plavat. (Záleží na situaci)

Příklady:
I can read.
Umím (mohu) číst.
I can read the book.
I could read.
I can’t read.
Neumím (nemohu) číst.
Mohu si přečíst tu knihu. I can’t read the book. Nemohu si přečíst tu knihu.
Uměl (mohl) jsem číst.
I will be able to read. Budu umět (moci) číst.
I couldn’t read. Neuměl jsem (nemohl jsem)číst.
I won’t be able to read. Nebudu umět (moci) číst.
I must read the book. Musím si tu knihu přečíst (já to chci). I needn’t read the book. Nemusím (nepotřebuji) číst tu knihu.
I don’t have to read the book. Nemusím číst tu knihu.
I have to read the book. Musím tu knihu přečíst. (Někdo mi to nařídil.) I don’t have to read the book. Nemusím tu knihu číst.
I had to read the book. Musel jsem tu knihu přečíst (jedno jestli ze svého rozhodnutí nebo na rozkaz). I didn’t have to read the book. Nemusel jsem tu knihu číst.
I will have to read the book. Budu tu knihu muset přečíst. I won’t have to read the book. Nebudu tu knihu muset číst.
I am allowed to read the book. Smím tu knihu přečíst.(Spíše se ale používá can).
I was allowed to read the book. Směl jsem tu knihu přečíst. (Spíše se použije could) I wasn’t allowed to read the book. Nesměl jsem tu knihu číst.
I will be allowed to read the book. Budu tu knihu smět číst.
