» Liberec Area Gallery’s
new building
In February 2014, Liberec will open a new gallery
with many attractions on the wonderful Masaryk
Avenue near the historical city centre. The Liberec
Area Gallery (Oblastní galerie v Liberci) will open its
new exhibition areas in the reconstructed building
of what was originally the Franz Joseph I Bathhouse.
You can look forward to new collections, interactive
exhibitions, art programs, a shop, a café and much
more. Come and see for your self.
» An invitation to the
Scheybal Memorial
The memorial is located in the attic areas of the
former rectory in Kostelní ulice, Jablonec nad Nisou.
It presents a stylised interior and the Scheybals’
work area. The exhibition was opened at the end
of May 2013 and it is dedicated to the lives and
work of two significant local ethnographers. Its
individual sections have been arranged so that they
give a true picture of the environment and the time
when both of the Scheybals lived and worked.
» Getting to know the
Frýdlant area with Duke
Albrecht von Wallenstein’s
secret messenger
This new competition and trail of discovery in the
Frýdlant area has ten stations, i.e. places where you
can follow in the footsteps of a young man who was
gathering information in 1631, while looking for
answers to the question of whether the Duke had
betrayed the Emperor and was secretly negotiating
with the Swedes and the Saxons. The guidebook
is available at the information centres and some
museums in the Frýdlant area.
» An exhibition of
the history of skiing in
the Jizera Mountains
If you want to look back over the history of skiing, visit
the collections of private enthusiasts and collectors
which are on display in the representative areas of the
Schowánk Villa in Jiřetín pod Bukovou. The exhibition
consists of more than fifty pairs of restored skis dating
from 1890–1945, sleds from the same period and the
largest collection of metal bindings which were mainly
used in the Alps and by the Austro-Hungarian army.

inside it is warm by the stove;
there is light in the fireplace, the old lady is slumbering,
the girls are spinning soft flax.“
Progress rushes by us with great strides and the words of the poem
“Christmas Eve” written by Karel Jaromír Erben almost two centuries ago
once again draw us into the picture of a rural room where a fire is crackling
in the fireplace and a spinning wheel is humming. You can smell the aroma
of burning wood sap and, if you go to the window behind which a billion
shining snowflakes are frenziedly shifting above the white snowdrifts, the
cold air penetrating around the window frames will waft over you.
How is that possible?
Not only is our hair or eye colour encoded in our genes, but so too is the ancient picture of a Czech winter. And the older and more modern we become,
the more frequently and deeply we return to that picture and the stronger
we feel at home there.
Stoves are returning to our homes and, just like our grandmothers and great-grandmothers, we spend our weekends laboriously sweeping up ash, despi-

te the fact that practical radiators wait patiently under our window sills, and
then we spend the entire evening watching the flames with fascination.
And many, predominantly ladies, have taken up a scouring rush and spinning
wheel. And not only that. People have once again begun to knit, crochet,
embroider, spin, weave and string beads.
And I wish everybody who feels at home in the verse of Mr Erben the return
of something else from those distant times. Something just as important as
warmth and the light of a fire. Friendship and human companionship. So that
we do not sit alone by the warm fire. So that the ancient magic of spinning
parties returns, so that people once again learn how to speak together, to
tell stories and fairy tales and so that the most courageous of them takes up
a book and begins to read aloud. And so that the others listen.

The Jizera Mountains
Card - a guest card
The Jizerka CARD is a guest card full of discounts
and advantages for all visitors to the Jizera
Mountains. As such, you can experience a long
weekend or a family holiday here to the full.
The “B” card can be acquired from accommodation providers who are members of the Jizera
Mountains Tourism Association during stays of
two days or longer. The card cannot be transferred
and each individual can only have one card. The
Jizera Mountains “A” CARD can also be purchased
for ninety crowns at the information centres in
Tanvald, Bedřichov and Albrechtice v Jizerských
horách.
The discounts and special prices are available,
for example, at Tanvaldský Špičák, on the luge
run in Janov nad Nisou, at the Jablonec swimming pool, at the Liberec Babylon Centre, at
the Toy Museum, at the Makak climbing centre
and for many other interesting activities. There
is a list of all the places which accept the card
and the available discounts on the Tourism
Association’s website: www.jizerske-hory.cz.

The basis of the Krakonoš’ retinue consists of imps
who leave no sinner unnoticed, the Krakonoš’ police
force which serves as his lordship’s bodyguards
and at the same time knows how to frisk all those
who approach him, Anna and Jim, the Counts of
Harrachov and in recent years also the Krakonoš’
neighbours from the Jizera Mountains, the fairy Izerína and the spirit Muhu. This retinue is also joined
every year by a parade of majorettes, a brass band
and many people in bizarre masks, which not only
people from Harrachov spend many hours planning
and making in an effort to be the most original.
Once the Krakonoš and his retinue have arrived
at their destination, i.e. the cross-country skiing

On 8th March 2014, it will be 68 years since the
beginnings of this traditional Harrachov event which
started in 1946 thanks to the active local associations and as a result of the joy at the end of the Second
World War. The event’s core has been preserved to
this day, i.e. everybody awaits the arrival of the lord
of the mountains, the Krakonoš, who, in full splendour, is in charge of welcoming the arrival of spring
together with his retinue and the visitors.

What’s new in the Jizera Mountain
Tourist Region?
In December 2013, the Jizera Mountain
Tourist Region completed its three-year
“Joint tourism marketing in the Jizera
Mountains Tourist Region” project
funded from the NUTS II Northeast regional
operating program, thanks to which it has
fully assumed all of the activities associated
with promoting the Jizera Mountains.
The concept for the uniform materials promoting the Jizera Mountains Tourist Region
and the new layout of the www.jizerky.cz
website was created within the framework
of the project. The seasonal Jizera newspaper
is published in four language versions (Czech,
English, German and Polish), including
a Czech events calendar. The new Jana and
Josef V. Scheybal learning trail was opened
(stage 1), the promotion of the Single track
under Smrk was supported (brochures, a DVD
and banners) and image prospectuses were
issued for the Jizera Mountains and Liberec,
as was material about the Tanvald and
Frýdlant areas and many others. Our common activities within the framework of our
cooperation with the Liberec Region, other
associations and our information centres
focussed on joint presentations, meetings
and participation at tourism trade fairs both
domestically and abroad.
When I look back over the last couple of
years, I have to say that it is possible to see
that a Herculean task has been completed
in the Jizera Mountains. As such, we would
like to take this opportunity to thank all our
partners, our collaborators and especially our
kind colleagues from the information centres, without whom it would not have been
possible to experience the warm feeling of
a job well done.
In December 2013, a further project entitled
“The landscape and people of the Jizera
Mountains” was completed from the Micro-Project Fund within the framework of OPPS
2007-2013 Target 3 (the CR-Poland) in the Nisa
Euroregion. Our Polish partner was once again
the town of Świeradów Zdrój.
NTAINS
A number of photographers from the Czech
and Polish sides of the Jizera Mountains were
contacted within the framework of the project
activities and they were subsequently involved
in three weekend photographic workshops.
The results of their work can be seen in the
photo galleries at www.vilaizerina.cz and
www.jizerky.cz or within the framework of
a wandering exhibition:
the information centres to support us and then
included the logo with Izerína as the cherry on
the cake.
You no longer have to leave the Jizera Mountains empty-handed. An Izerína souvenir awaits
you at the information centres and is ready to
accompany and protect you on your further
journeys, which are sure to bring you back to us
again in the north.
Every mountain range has its protector. So, there was nothing for
it but to start a search to find out
whom our ancestors had revered
in the Jizera Mountains. One fairytale character
has been here since time immemorial and this is
none other than Izerína the Fairy. She is named
after the Jizera River which rises in the Jizera
Mountains and whose original Celtic name
“Isar” (“Iser”) explains how the name arose.

of science and technology. A wide range of thematic exhibitions
and hundreds of interactive aids and exhibits will help visitors to
attain a greater understanding of the essence of natural phenomena.
GEO
This area provides information about the natural processes on Planet Earth and the Earth as a planetary
body in space. Forty interactive exhibits help visitors
to understand where the Earth came from and how it
works. A unique slide takes visitors into the “planet’s
core” where the GeoLab exhibition continues.

What do things look like beneath our planet’s surface?
What is underground in the Czech Republic? An interactive underground exhibition dedicated to the geology of the Czech Republic.
The Elements
Fire, water, air and earth: a presentation of the basic
elements. The interactive exhibits include the Solar Air Show, Tesla’s Transformer, the Gale Simulator,
the Earthquake Simulator and so on.
Water World
The indoor exhibition enables visitors to experiment
with a lock chamber or water mills. The outdoor water games enable visitors to experiment with water
pumps, to make electrical energy etc..
Science at home
2 thematically divided halls unveil the mysteries of the
modern household and the construction of buildings,
including energy distribution systems and the intelligent control of electrical appliances.
The Nano-World and the Liberec Technical University
The university is internationally renowned for its work
with nanotechnology. The exhibition presents this
world using visualisations and interactive screenings.
Humans
The exhibition is located in 3 areas which are thematically focussed on the human body and its structure,
the human senses and an investigation of them and lifestyles, eating habits and mental health.
Sex Mission
The exhibition aimed at educating visitors about sexuality is divided into 4 sections which are interrelated:
Me: life from conception and birth, child development
and maturation up to the beginning of an active sex
life.
Us: life in a couple, sex and love.
Them: differences in sexuality throughout history,
in other cultures and religions, the sexuality of animals
and so on.
Taboo?: this exhibition discovers some myths and
taboo topics. What is normal in sex and what is not?
The presentation of differing behaviours, deviations
and perversions, but also sexually transmissible diseases, diseases associated with the reproduction system and other risks which are associated with sexual
reproduction.

Fully digital screenings on a 9 metre dome in 3D! The
planetarium offers unique, live, hour-long thematic programs which are not only about the universe.

The Bathhouse – the new building for
the District Gallery in Liberec
In February 2014, the District Gallery in Liberec will
open its newly reconstructed exhibition facilities in
the reconstructed bathhouse in Masaryk Street. The
original historicised structure dating from 1900 was
unused for a long time, but thanks to an investment
of 360 million CZK the former Franz Joseph I.
Bathhouse has been returned to its original beauty
and will be put to a new use.

Thanks to its extensive collections, the Liberec Gallery is the fifth largest in the Czech Republic. As well
as the collection of Czech art which includes some
very well-known names, the gallery can also offer
visitors a unique collection of French 19th century
landscapes, German and Austrian 19th century
paintings and Dutch works from the 16th – 18th
centuries. It is therefore with some justification that
it is known as a museum of European art! The quality
of the collections holds its own in comparison with
not only Czech galleries, but also with a number of
other Central European galleries and museums.
In February 2014, Liberec will offer you a gallery with
many attractions on a wonderful promenade avenue
near the city’s historical centre.

folk culture, heritage care, topography and
regional history. They created a remarkable
art collection and an extensive library. Josef V.
Scheybal was an excellent artist and a talented
illustrator. Thanks to him and his wife, the Liberec
Region has an extensive scientific and artistic
collection which constitutes a memorial to the
work of these significant local ethnographers.
Its individual parts have been divided in order to
present the environment and period in which the
Scheybals lived and worked.
local folk art, the landscape and the countryside.
After the death of the couple, the building was
bequeathed to the town which decided to honour
their memory and to reconstruct the house
bearing their name and legacy.
The building has served the town’s citizens and
visitors for more than a year since its general
reconstruction. It offers information from the area
of tourism and culture. The ground floor houses
the tourist information centre, the first floor
houses the MY Town Gallery and the Jana and
Josef V. Scheybal Memorial is located in the attic.

Memorial
The memorial’s exhibition was opened at the end
of May 2013 and it is dedicated to the life and

environment. Urban and folk furniture, an
imitation attic area and a studio with a study
are on display within the small area. Part of the
exhibition also depicts the Scheybals’ significant
activities in the area of heritage care, including
their work sketches and notes. The largest area
has been dedicated to the library which was an
integral part of every work and residential area.
The first example of J. V. Scheybal’s large number
of collections acquaints visitors with a nook dedicated to the interesting area of cantastoria. There,
visitors are graphically acquainted with painted
song pictures and period musical items. During
the Christmas period, the attic area also includes
various nativity scenes, which essentially belong
to this period, in order to enliven the stylised folk
interior. Thematically oriented events are always
organised within the framework of the winter and
spring holidays.

The Makak climbing arena
An invitation to the Jablonec climbing arena
– don’t miss this excellent opportunity to go
climbing! The arena has an area of ca 2000 m2 and
it is one of the largest such facilities in the Czech
Republic with a significant number of climbing
and bouldering profiles. The height of the
climbing wall ranges from 10 m to 16 m.
A description of the wall:
You can climb on a unique wall with a total area
of 2,000 m2 in a hall with dimensions of 14 x 36 m.
The climbing walls have been designed with everybody in mind! As such, there are highly diverse
profiles designated for easy to intermediate routes
with a length of 13–15 m. There is also something
for young climbers and beginners: the lowest wall
has a height of 9 – 11 m and it includes perpendicular profiles. And those who are looking for the
highest degree of difficulty can use the unrivalled
sports profile. At a height of 16.5 m, there is a 14 m
overhang and you will wind off 25 m of rope
during the climb. A total of 88 climbing lines have
been installed on the climbing wall.
All of the profiles have been designed so that the
climbing is as diverse as possible. The wall shape
consists of many edges, nooks and profiles in
which the route merges from a slight overhang
to a more difficult one and there are also fissures,
corner fissures and ledges. We have also kept

in mind those who prefer to free climb without
a rope. The lower section of the hall includes
a bouldering wall with a surface of 230 m2 on
which there are a number of various profiles
which are sure to satisfy all climbers.
The climbing arena includes climbing equipment
hire and a shop with climbing accessories. The
pub with good beer and coffee is an excellent way
to finish a climb.

facility and parking is possible at the petrol station in Smržovka
(the former agricultural cooperative), at the “U Potůčku”
guesthouse, at the Smržovka church and from the intersection
on Jablonecká Street in the direction of the water tank.

cross-country skiing trails both on the ridges of the Giant
Mountains and with connections to other cross-country skiing
areas on the Polish and Czech sides of the Jizera Mountains.
Two 7.5 km long cross-country skiing circuits start right next to
the lower station of the chairlift in the Harrachov sports facility.
It is possible to go skiing along the ridges from the top chairlift
station on Devil’s Mountain (Čertova hora). Fitter skiers can use
the regularly groomed track via Rýžoviště to Dvoračky or set
off along the Mumlava valley to Vosecká bouda. The Misar Trail
was opened in 2012 and it leads from the car park next to the
biathlon centre to the pedestrian border crossing point with
Poland. Thanks to this, you can also use the less demanding,
groomed Polish trails in the area of Jakuszyce.

the suburb of Výšina. The facility offers 3–5 km of regularly groomed cross-country trails. There is a shorter circuit (simple terrain
suitable for beginners) and a longer circuit (the hilly terrain of the
motocross track). Access to the cross-country skiing facility and
parking: it is possible to use the car park for the “Pionýrka” downhill
slope (the upper area of the suburb of Výšina) or access from the
intersection at the Tanvald substation (U Rozvodny Street) where
there is usually a ploughed parking area on the meadow.

to the Skicentrum Hotel, near the Delta ski tow. The stadium

Szklarska Poręba – this involves excellent, high-situated terrain
where the snow lies from October to late spring and thus provides
excellent conditions for cross-country skiing. The “Bieg Piastów”
race, the oldest and largest Polish mass skiing race which has
been included in the WORLDLOPPET international long-distance
skiing league, is held there. The centre offers more than 150 km
of cross-country trails of varying degrees of difficulty which
are located in the Jizera Mountains, partially in the territory of
the Szklarska Poręba Forest Administration and partially in the
territory of the Świeradów-Zdrój Forest Administration. They are
connected to a number of Czech trails which form a total network
of almost 200 km of cross-country skiing trails. Szklarska Poręba
– Jakuszyce is also home to the training centre for the Polish
Association of Dog Sledding and Northern Breed Dogs. Training
takes place there from December to March.

THE JIZERA MOUNTAINS
ARTERIAL SKIING NETWORK
Nowadays, few people could imagine the
Jizera Mountains without groomed crosscountry skiing trails, as the regular mechanical
grooming of the trails began prior to the 1930s.
The current Jizera Mountains Arterial Skiing
Network has mainly been established thanks
to the Peru Expedition Memorial Skiing Race
which is still held today. This internationally
renowned race is also known as the Jizera
Fifty which was first held in 1968. Enthusiastic
cross-country skiers regretted the fact that
the local trails were only groomed prior to the
race and they called for them to be groomed
more frequently. Eventually their call was
heard and nowadays skiers can use 180
kilometres of groomed cross-country skiing
trails in the Jizera Mountains Arterial Network
throughout the entire winter period.
Thanks to the cooperation with other trail
operators (for example, the Jizera Mountains
for You Association (Jizerky pro vás) in
Kořenov or Bieg Piastów in Jakuszyce, Poland),
it is also possible to easily connect with the
groomed trails in the Giant Mountains or
in Poland. The trails in the Jizera Mountains
Arterial Skiing Network welcome more than
half a million skiers every year. The grooming
of the entire Jizera Mountains Arterial Skiing
Network requires a significant commitment.
During the comprehensive grooming of
the arterial network, two snowcats leave
from Bedřichov and one from the Jizerka
settlement simultaneously. Even using three
vehicles, the grooming of the trail takes eight
to twelve hours.
The JIZERSKÁ, o.p.s. non-profit organisation is
in charge of grooming the trails in the Jizera
Mountains. This organisation was established
in Bedřichov in 1999. You can find daily news
about the snow cover in the Jizera Mountains,
the condition of the groomed trails and
information about any limitations on the trails
throughout the entire winter season on www.
jizerskaops.cz. It is also possible to discuss
topics associated with the Jizera Mountains
Arterial Skiing Network on Facebook.
Every year, it is necessary to find five million
crowns to cover the costs of grooming the
trails in the network. It is necessary to secure
experienced snowcat drivers, repairs and
servicing for the snowcats and financing to
cover diesel and many other costs associated
with the grooming of the trails. A significant
part of the funds comes from contributions
from the budgets of the municipalities and
towns in the Liberec Region and from sponsors.
However, the skiers themselves, who are able
to use the trails in the Jizera Mountains for
free, are also involved. Volunteer donors from
the public can make use of several options
to contribute to the public collection which
has been permitted and is inspected by the
Liberec Region. The use of these funds must
always be duly substantiated, so people can
be sure that all of the money is used to groom
the cross-country skiing trails and for any
associated activities.

And what new things await you when
skiing in the Jizera Mountains this winter?
Mainly, this involves new winter signs for
skiers. We have been cooperating with the
Czech Hiking Club in this matter due to the
large number of trails and the complicated
system of signs. As such, we will gradually add
signposts and intersection sign over time. This
year, we began signposting the area between
Bedřichov, Nová Louka, Kristiánov and the
Josefov důl reservoir. This is a popular skiing
area and the orientation there has also been
aggravated due to the racing circuit known as
“Pětka”.

A secret messenger in the Frýdlant area
The secret messenger of Duke Albrecht von
Wallenstein has invited you to get to know the
Frýdlant area. At ten places in the Frýdlant area,
you can follow in the footsteps of a young man
who was gathering information in 1631, while
looking for answers to the question of whether the
Duke had betrayed the Emperor and was secretly
negotiating with the Swedes and the Saxons.

The moving nativity scene made by Mr Gustav Simon
(1873–1953) with imensions of 4.3 x 2 m has almost

An exhibition of the history of skiing in the Jizera Mountains, at the Schowánek Villa, in Jiřetín pod Bukovou
This exhibition has been created with the aim
of creating the first museum of skiing in the
Jizera Mountains, especially because the Giant
Mountains already have several such museums.
Despite this, however, the origins of skiing date
back slightly further in the Jizera Mountains
than in the Giant Mountains. This is an amateur
exhibition, as we work on it in our free time.
Our collection of private enthusiasts had begun
to grow to such an extent that we were beginning to have problems with storing it. It was
then that we received an offer from the Mayor
of Jiřetín pod Bukovou to display our exhibits in
the representative areas of the Schowánk Villa.
As such, the public can also enjoy the collection, possibly even with a nostalgic smile.
Our exhibition contains over fifty pairs of skis
dating from 1890 to 1945. However, some of
them are only replicas, as the originals are
exceedingly difficult to find. We have another
forty pairs of skis in the depository which
unfortunately cannot be accommodated at the
exhibition. There are also several sleds from the
same period on display.
We also must also not forget our exhibits from
the largest collection of metal bindings which
were mainly used in the
Alps and by the Austro-Hungarian army. These
especially include
so-called “Lilienfeld”
bindings patented
in 1896 which were
invented by a native of
Moravia, Matthias Zdarsky, who is considered
to be an Austrian hero
or the father of Alpine
skiing.
These bindings enable
movement when walking, but are rigid during
lateral movement.
Alpine skiing was somewhat neglected in this
country at that time, because preference was
given to Nordic skiing. This resulted in a lack
of advanced Czech downhill skiers, which
remained the case until recently. The exhibition
pays special attention to Matthias Zdarsky and
to the Alpine style. This is by way of our small
apology.
The Ski Jumping World Championship in Harrachov
Not only Harrachov, but the
entire Czech Republic is looking

event of the Ski Jumping World
Championship which will take
place from 13th to 16th March
2014. Harrachov is one of only
five resorts in the world which
can boast giant ski jumps and
as such are venues for world cup ski jumping
events. The Harrachov ski jump facility was built
in 1978–1983 and the giant ski jump tower, now
designated as HS 205, enables jumps of more
than 210 metres which is also born out by the
fact that the tower record dating from 2011
held by the Swiss ski jumper Simon Ammann
is 215.5 m.
Our competitors are also among the world’s top
competitors in this attractive spectator sport.
As such, be sure not to miss this exceptional
sports event and come and support our boys.

News from the trailblazers
at the Czech Hiking Club
It is November which means that winter will soon
arrive in the Jizera Mountains, bringing with it the
skiing season. This year, the Jizerská non-profit
organisation has prepared the mechanical grooming
of yet another trail for cross-country skiers starting
at Bedřichov – hájovna and continuing past the
Presidential Chalet (Prezidentská chata), the
Štumpe Memorial (Štumpeho pomník), the Na hrázi
intersection and the Deep Stream (Hluboký potok).
Once there, skiers can decide whether to continue via
the Pitelek Memorial (Pitelkův pomníček) to the Pod
Kristiánovem intersection or whether to continue
along the Kristiánov Trail and then up the hill leading
from Kristiánov to Rozmezí.
Visitors to the Jizera Mountains are used to the
fact that the signs installed at the intersections are

lightly coloured and, if this involves a cross-country
skiing trail as well as a summer hiking trail, include
a pictogram of a skier. The trails are marked with
hiking trail line markings.
The technical group of trailblazers from the Liberec
Region has installed signposts for skiers on this trail.
These signposts are bright orange and have been
installed at the intersections. The trail has not been
marked with line markings, but the skiers can follow
the mechanically groomed trails. All of the signposts
installed on the trees have been screwed onto
wooden frames which have then been attached to
the trees using screws with foam washers. The foam
washers prevent the screws from penetrating too
far into the tree trunks. It is necessary to loosen the
screws after 2 to 3 years.
The signposts for skiers also include the local place
name, while the signs in the forest sections include
contact information for the Mountain Rescue Service.
We recommend that you should enter the number
for the Mountain Rescue Service into your telephone
and we hope that you will not need it and that you
will return home healthy, rested and with beautiful
memories of the Jizera Mountains.

Skiing and mulled wine at the Giant Barrel
Frýdlantsko
The title says it all: this is precisely what awaits you at the Giant Barrel (Obří sud) on Javorník near
Liberec. Thanks to a one hundred million crown grant from the Northeast Regional Operating Program,
the ski resort is on a par with many other modern mountain resorts. The wheelchair access, four-seater
chairlift will take you to the top of the 900-metre long, blue slope within six minutes. There is a snow
park for skiers and snowboarders and a children’s slope with a ski tow. The downhill slopes have artificial
snowmaking facilities and they can also be used for evening skiing. You can give your legs a break on the
1100 metre luge run, one of the longest of its types in the Czech Republic. And what about the mulled
wine? You can go and have a glass of mulled wine at the restaurant and guesthouse located in an actual
giant barrel. It was also built at the very top of the hill, just a few metres from the chairlift terminus
in 2011, thanks to the aforementioned support from the European Union.

The Ještěd
Ski Resort
is a modern ski resort within reach of Liberec public transport and with excellent traffic accessibility
(the Czech Innsbruck). The resort includes 2 four-seater chairlifts, 1 two-seater chairlift, 1 gondola
cableway to the top of Ještěd and 4 ski tows. It
is one of the most modern resorts in the Czech
Republic. It has a five-star SPLV rating and it ranked third among Czech resorts according to the
SWOT analysis for 2009. It has the infrastructure
of a large city behind it, including good traffic
accessibility both when using personal transport
and public transport which brings visitors right
up to the gates of the resort. Visitors can also
easily park in a semi-covered central car park with
sufficient capacity or make use of any of the other
available parking areas, all of which are free of
charge. The ski resort offers slopes at all levels
of difficulty, ranging from demanding slopes on
the northern side to easy slopes on the sunny
southern side. The resort operates an F10 slope
for evening skiing. The Bucharka practise area and
two practise meadows located directly next to
the tram terminus are available for beginners. The
resort’s youngest visitors will also find a number
of winter attractions in the children’s skiing area:
for example, a popular merry-go-round or a travelling carpet for the youngest skiers. We offer
the parents of young skiers a babysitting service
directly at the resort. Our website includes a new
interactive map which describes the entire resort
in detail. It includes four HD web cameras which
can immediately show visitors what is happening
on the slopes on the map and what the skiing
traffic is like. A further new feature is the portal
at the entry to the Černý vrch ski tow which is
equipped with LED panels to provide skiers with
better information. Only the ten best resorts in
the Czech Republic have this equipment. Top
quality refreshments on every slope are also
a matter of course, while there is also a central
self-service restaurant located directly next to the
ski tow station.
Our resort also newly offers visitors the
opportunity of accommodation in the middle of
the ski slopes in the central building on the ski
jump landing area. All of the rooms have their
own social amenities, Wi-Fi, colour television and
wheelchair access. There is the option of selecting
accommodation without meals and using the
fully equipped kitchen on each floor (a kitchen
unit, including a refrigerator, a microwave oven
and a hob) or of selecting accommodation with
meals provided in the building (breakfast, half
board or full board).
The ski-bus from the tram terminus, which provides free transport for evening skiing, is mainly
used by skiers from Liberec.
The resort uses a contactless system: the bond for
the chip card is 100 CZK.

skiers. An excellent place for fun and relaxation. This
year, we have planned a few new items, including
the closing Pláně jam with super prizes.
A children’s park with a moving belt, a merry-go-round and a small tow, including ski instruction for
the youngest skiers.
The Vesec sports and recreation facility, which is
designed not only for top classical skiing events
(cross-country skiing), but also for recreational skiing
and other year-round sports or other activities, including cultural activities, constitutes an integral part
of the Ještěd Ski Resort. It occupies an area of 99.96
ha. The cross-country skiing trails are equipped with
snow-making equipment.
Parking at the resort is free all year round. We have
prepared a left-luggage office and opened changing
rooms and showers for visitors. A new feature this
year is the children’s playground for young visitors. It
is possible to follow the action at the resort using the
web camera which is located on the administrative
building. There is a Wi-Fi network available for
connections to the internet.

Discover the beauty of the Liberec
Region from its mountain ridges
Through the Polish Jizera Mountains to the
Confluence of the Jizera and the Jizerka
The Ridge Trail connects attractive areas
in the upper reaches from the Jizera Mountains through to the Zittau Mountains.
Total: 22 km
The longest marked ridge trail in the Czech Republic,
the so-called “Blauer Kammweg” or “Blue Ridge Trail
(Modrá hřebenovka) is more than one hundred years
old. In its heyday, it stretched from Blankenstein Saale
in Germany, across the entire Ore Mountains, through
the area of the Czech-Saxon Switzerland, the Lusatian
Mountains, the Jizera Mountains, the Ještěd Ridge, the
Giant Mountains, the Broumov area, the Eagle Mountains and Sněžník all the way up to Praděd. The trail
crossed the border from one side to the other in many
places, but it generally followed the main mountain
ridge which constitutes the border. The Liberec Region
has been involved in a project supported by the European Union aimed at renewing part of this ridge trail in
cooperation with its German partner, Landkreis Görlitz.
The renewed Ridge Trail leads across the territory of the
Liberec Region to the German area of the Zittau Mountains and connects many attractive places high in the
Jizera, Lusatian and Zittau Mountains and on the Černá
Studnice and Ještěd-Kozákov Ridges. It can be used by
hikers and cyclists, as well as by cross-country skiers in
winter. The three parallel trails (for hikers, cyclists and
cross-county skiers) have been carefully selected so that
they not only pass through well-known locations in the
German-Czech border area, but also through places of
interest, which are currently seldom visited. The routes
have been prepared in such a way so that the hiking and
cycling trails do not overlap. The remaining construction
work (the trails will be equipped with information signs
with maps, benches, shelters, bike stands and rest
areas) will be completed by the end of September 2013.
The northern and southern branches of the trail both
start in the settlement of Jizerka v Jizerských horách.
The northern trail continues through the upper reaches
of the Jizera Mountains, via Smědava, Sněžné věžičky,
Ptačí kupy and Poledník. It then continues around Oldřichov v Hájích to Albrechtice u Frýdlantu, Václavice and
Hrádek nad Nisou. It crosses the state border at Hartau
and once in Germany it continues along the Olbersdor-
Harrachov (the railway station) – the state border (0.5 km) –
Orle (6.5 km) – the bridge across the Jizera (8 km) – Jizerka,
the Pyramid (10 km) – the U Bunkru intersection (11 km) – the
Souš Road (14.5 km) – the Breached Dam (Protržená přehrada)
(16 km) – Mariánskohorské Boudy (18 km) – Josefův Důl (22 km).
Set off from the Harrachov railway station to the nearby border
crossing point. If you go left from there, the former glassmaking
settlement of Orle will appear before you after 6 km. The greater part of the route is flat and it is not until the second half that
there is a short ascent, albeit with occasional views of Bukovec.
If you head right at the border crossing, you will come directly
to Osada. This route has recently become highly frequented.
Both routes are approximately the same length.
fer See and the Mandau River to Oybin, up to the peak
of Hochwald (Hvozd), through which the Czech-German
state border passes, and on to Jonsdorf. On the Czech
side of the border, the trail once again returns to Dolní
Podluží/Waltersdorf border crossing and it ends at Nová
Huť on the border with the Ústí Region.
The southern trail leads from Jizerka via Desná,
Tanvald and the Černá Studnice Ridge to Milíře and
then continues across the Ještěd Ridge to Ještěd. The
walking trail takes visitors to Petrovice and it ends at
the Czech-German border, near Lückendorf. However,
the cycle trail leads up to the border with the Ústí
Region via Mařenice and Horní and Dolní Světlá.

found on-line at www.hrebenovka.cz which will be launched at the end of summer. The website will be available in
Czech, German, English and Polish language versions.
The Ridge Trail Project has been financed from the
2007-2013 Cíl3/Ziel3 Program for the support of cross-border cooperation between the Czech Republic and
the Free State of Saxony.
Nowadays, Orle is one of the most visited areas of the Polish
Jizera Mountains. Hikers or skiers of various nationalities gather
near the former gamekeeper’s lodge, now transformed into
a pub, during good weather. The usual queue for refreshments
therefore requires a certain amount of time and patience.
However, there are also other refreshment opportunities at
Jizerka, where you will subsequently go after Orle. The way to
the border crossing across the Jizera River (since 2005) leads
easily around the hill Granicznik (there is a groomed trail most
of the way). The route then ascends up to Jizerka from the
bridge where the Jizerka River discharges into the Jizera and it
finishes at the Pyramid Chalet.
Once at the Jizerka settlement, there are a number of options
as to how you can continue. Our tip leads to Josefův Důl.
Ascend along the Jizera Mountains arterial cross-country skiing
network to the U Bunkru intersection where you should cross
the Promenáda Trail. Your route will continue to rise for about

8.5 km – the Štolpich Trail, Na Žďárku 10 km – the
intersection with the Lumberjack’s Trail (Dřevařská cesta)
13.5 km – the Lumberjack’s (also known as the New)
Trail – Kristiánov 18 km – the Josefův Důl Reservoir –
Hrabětice, the car park, the bus stop 23.5 km.
Variant: with a turnoff to the peak of Holubník 27.5 km.
Set off to right across the meadow behind the car park
at the Hrabětice “chapel” and descend to the Josefův
Důl Reservoir along the road. Cross over the dual-section dam and continue for some time around the
circumference of the largest Jizera Mountain reservoir.
The ascent to the track intersection starts under the
former glassmaking settlement of Kristiánov. Kristiánov lies about 5 minutes to the right of there. Go left
towards the Holubník Saddle at the intersection by the
forest cemetery. Leave the groomed trail at the next
intersection with the so-call Lumberjack’s Cross and
slightly ascend to the saddle where you will reach an
altitude of 1000 metres.

There is then a pleasant descent from the Holubník
Saddle around the White Death memorial to the Štolpich
Trail. White Death is the name given to the place with
a picture recalling the semi-comical sledging trip of
three men from Liberec. These gentlemen discovered on
19th February 1909 that “winter in these mountains can
be a merciless creature”, but they were lucky and managed to return home without any loss of life or limb. The
story is related by the caption written on the picture.
At the Na Žďárku intersection, you will once again come to
a mechanically groomed trail from the arterial cross-country skiing network and you should then turn left. Head
around the Grouse Lodge (Tetřeví bouda) (it is not open
to the public) up to Hřebínek where the aforementioned
Lumberjack’s (also known as the New) Trail begins. It has
only a slightly undulating profile and it is usually well
groomed. Turn right at the end of it and you will head back
to Kristiánov and around the Josefův Důl Reservoir up to
the car park at Hrabětice along the same trail as before.
Variant: it is possible to turn left at the Holubník Saddle up
to the top of Holubník, the cliffs of which offer a perfect view.
The detour is 2 km long, so it extends the basic route by 4 km.
After the long descent, a slightly more demanding climb to the
Desná Ridge (Desenský hřbet) awaits you. Shortly afterwards, the
area of the Breached Dam on the White Desná will open up before
you. The summer version of the hiking trail to Mariánskohorské
Boudy is not recommended in winter and as such it is better to
head to the right along the road which forms a large curve.
The former settlement of Mariánskohorské Boudy is located
at the intersection of two significant trails. One connects
Josefův Důl with Jizerka and the second connects Mariánská
Hora with the Štolpich Trail. The descent to Josefův Důl along
the ungroomed road is often rather hazardous and it requires
a degree of caution. Once you leave the forest, you will come to
an intersection known as the Forest Gate (Lesní brána). Once
there, it may be necessary to remove your skis. It is then just
15 minutes walk to the nearby railway station.
Along the Central Jizera Mountain Ridge
The basic route: 22 km, the variant: 38 km
Jizerka, the car park – Jizerka, centre 1 km – Lasičí cesta
– Věžní skály 3.5 km – Pytlácké kameny 5 km – Předěl
11 km – Smědava 15 km – the kiosk at Promenáda 16.5 km –
U Bunkru 20.5 km – Jizerka, the car park 22 km..
Variant I: it is also possible to start at Smědava, where
buses travel from Frýdlant at weekends.
The Josefův Důl Reservoir
and the Holubník Saddle
1 km (beware of descending skiers!) up to the Italian Ridge
(Vlašský hřeben). Before starting on the descent down the other
side, you will have the opportunity of enjoying a beautiful view
of the Souš Reservoir and Ještěd. The most pleasant section
of the trip now lies before you, because the route continues to
descend all the way to the Souš Road.
Variant II: travelling by train: Kořenov, the railway
station – Václavíkova Studánka – Jizerka, the car park
8 km. The trip is extended to a total length of 38 km.
Turn left from the road leading from the car park in Jizerka
along the meadows to the centre of the settlement (the
Museum of the Jizera Mountains, the Mountain Rescue
Service base). A short while later, turn right along the green
marked trail to the Central Jizera Mountains Ridge (Střední
Jizerský hřeben). The track ascends to the saddle where it
then curves to the left. The ascent continues through a young
spruce forest up to Věžní skály (1018 metres). We recommend
that lovers of distant views should climb to the top.
There is then a quick descent to Pytlácké kameny. One of
the largest rocking stones in the Jizera Mountains is located
there on the right, but it is not visible directly from the
track. It is possible to go around Pytlácké kameny both to
the left and the right. The ascent to the rocky peak can,
however, be relatively difficult under winter conditions.
The track descends slightly to the Zelený kámen
intersection. The cliff is located directly in front of you off
the track, but a short detour is certainly worth it. There is
a unique view of the snow-covered bogs of the Great Jizera
Mountains Meadow from the relatively easily accessible
peak. However, the basic track leads to the right from
the intersection and then heads to Předěl where it is also
possible find a hiker’s shelter as well as the intersection.
The mechanically groomed trail starts there.
The green marked trail continues from Předěl to the chalet
at Smědava. The groomed trail passes around Plochý
vrch on its northern side, but it is also possible to use the
southern bypass (unmarked). Both variants are about the
same length.
Ascend in the direction of Jizerka from Smědava. The well-known Promenáda trail turns right from the refreshment
kiosk. It undulates and includes a long, but slight descent
in the direction you are heading. After a short climb, you
will come to the U Bunkru intersection of skiing trails.
There is now another 1.5 km to the car park at the upper
end of Jizerka.
Variant II: when using the train, disembark at the railway
station in Kořenov. There is a saw mill at the railway crossing and the groomed trail which will take you to Jizerka
via Horní Polubný and Václavíkova Studánka starts behind
it. This extends the trip by 16 km (there and back).

We offer the products of 30 costume jewellery
companies from Jablonec nad Nisou and its
environs in an area of 700 m2. This includes
finished costume jewellery, beads, seed beads,
metal components and other necessary materials
for hobby beadworking. We also offer Czech utility
glass from Crystalex Nový Bor and the Bohemia
Poděbrady glassworks as a supplementary article.
Preciosa a.s. has a salesroom at the centre. It offers
cut glass gifts, decorations and exclusive jewellery.
We also offer jewellery made using silver or Czech
garnets. The offer also includes traditional blown
glass and hand decorated Christmas decorations.

As well as the option of purchasing traditional
Czech products, we also offer visitors informative,
educational and artistic activities. These include
a creative workshop with the assistance of a designer, fashion news, presentations of costume
jewellery production every Wednesday from
2 to 5 pm and fashion shows presenting a clothes
designer once a month. Lectures will take place
from 4 pm on 20. 2. and 20. 3. 2014.
Palace Plus has been conceived as a venue which
represents the costume jewellery industry and
wishes to convince its visitors of the fact that
Czech costume jewellery has maintained its high
