The independent city of Plauen with its
70,000 inhabitants is the largest city in
the Vogtland region and is the area’s top
lace centre and city in the truest sense
of the word.
Plauen was first mentioned as “vicus
plawe” in the consecration document for
the St. Johannis church in 1122 and was
first mentioned as a town in a document
dating back to 1244. The city has had a
chequered history. Once lace production
started in the 19th century, Plauen’s
economy experienced a boom and hit a
peak, mainly as a result of its quality lace
industry, which became famous around
the world. 75 per cent of the city was
destroyed during World War II and the
city was deliberately neglected under the
former East German regime, because it
was near the border with Bavaria. But it
has developed in a striking manner since
German Unification in 1990. Did you know
that it was the citizens of Plauen,
alongside the people of Leipzig, who were
primarily responsible for fall of the wall in
Eastern Germany in the autumn of 1989?
The citizens of Plauen can be proud of

Mûsto Plavno s cca 70 000 obyvateli,
které je samostatnym správním obvodem,
je nejvût‰ím mûstem kraje Vogtland a to
v pravém smyslu slova „mûsto krajek“.
Mûsto má bohatou historii: první písemná
zmínka o nûm pochází z roku 1122 – v
listinû o vysvûcení kostela sv. Jana je
uvedeno jako „vicus plawe“ a v roce 1244
bylo poprvé oznaãeno jako mûsto. S
rozvojem krajkáfiství v 19. století dosáhlo
mûsto Plavno enormního hospodáfiského
rozmachu, dostalo se takfiíkajíc „na
Ïpiãku“, plavenská krajka získala svûtovou
proslulost. Ve druhé svûtové válce bylo
ze 75 % zniãeno, v dobách nûkdej‰í NDR
vûdomû zanedbáváno v bezprostfiední
blízkosti Bavorska, a teprve po
znovusjednocení v roce 1990 doznalo
opût znaãného rozvoje. Vûdûli jste, Ïe to
vedle obyvatel Lipska byli obãané mûsta
Plavna, ktefií na podzim 1989 zpÛsobili
na vychodû Nûmecka politicky pfievrat?

“Plauen lace” with its magical touch has made the city
famous all over the world. Lace embroidery has been
the key theme running through the city’s history. Plauen
was already the centre of the cloth making and cotton
weaving trades in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Hand embroidery was introduced in the 19th century,
and this was extended to include embroidered tulle.
Incidentally, this was the basis for the future success of
Plauen lace. About 16,000 embroidery machines were
in use in 1912, the heyday of the industry.
Did you know that Plauen lace was awarded the Grand
Prix at the first World Fair in Paris in 1900? Plauen lace
is still in great demand and spreads the city’s name all
over the world. Come and be captivated by the charm
of Plauen lace.
Okouzlující „plavenská krajka“ proslavila toto mûsto po
celém svûtû. Vy‰ívání krajek se dûjinami mûsta Plavna
táhne jako ãervená nit. JiÏ v 15. a 16. století bylo Plavno
centrem soukenického fiemesla a tkalcÛ bavlny. V 19.
století byla zavedena ruãní vy‰ivka, ze které se dále
vyvinula tylová vy‰ivka, která byla mimojiné základem
pozdûj‰ího vítûzství a uznání plavenské krajky. V roce
1912 se pouÏívalo cca 16.000 vyÏívacích strojÛ, coÏ byl
vrchol tohoto vyvoje. Vûdûli jste, Ïe plavenská krajka
byla v roce 1900 na první Svûtové vystavû v PafiíÏi
vyznamenána Velkou cenou?
Po plavenské krajce je poptávka i dnes a tento vyrobek
vyváÏí jméno svého „rodného mûsta“ do celého svûta.

Erich Ohser - e.o. plauen, the brilliant
drawer and caricaturist and a famous son
of the city of Plauen, made a name for
himself all over the world, especially with
his father-son stories. But as a brilliant
artist, he also left behind a great legacy
for future generations. It is an honour and
a duty for the city of Plauen to display his
works in a permanent exhibition in the
gallery bearing his name.
The funny stories of the two likeable guys,
the father with a moustache and his roguish
son, still bring a smile to people’s faces,
regardless of how old they are.
But the exhibition also provides insight into
the complete works of the famous artist.
The exhibition shows landscape sketches,
nude studies and outstanding portrait
drawings.

city centre. Once you climb the 230 stairs to the lookout
platform on the city hall tower, you can see as far as the

The “Vogtland-Switzerland” recreation
area around the Pöhl reservoir is

The Pöhl reservoir is one of the largest
summer recreation areas in Saxony and
attracts people who want to swim, sail or
surf.
The officially recognised resort of Jössnitz,
which is part of the Plauen district, is
situated near the Pöhl reservoir. Under

The Dragon’s Cave in Syrau is one of
the most beautiful stalactite and stalagmite
caves in Germany and Saxony’s only
cave that is open to visitors.
At a depth of 16 m you can admire
underground beauties such as decorative
sinter deposits, crystal-clear lakes and,
a really unusual feature, clay cones on
the walls of the cave. Mystical sounds
and laser shows with a magnificent display
of colours create an intriguing atmosphere
inside the cave on special occasions.

As early as 1846 the railway pioneers of the Saxon-Bavarian Railway Company constructed
Germany’s first north-south route from Leipzig to Nuremberg. The most prominent features
were the Göltzsch Valley Bridge and its ‘smaller sister’, the Elster Valley Bridge. Both bridges
located in the Vogtland region are the largest brick bridges in the world. They are also believed
to be the first bridges, for which statics were calculated.
The Göltzsch Valley Bridge is the largest brick bridge in the world. About 26 million bricks
were required for the construction (4 levels; largest arch span: 30.9m).
