Research & Development Request
H2020-WATER-2015- WATER INNOVATION-Italian
company looking for project partners for operational
solutions to solve water pollution challenge
Summary
An Italian company is looking for public authorities, research organizations and companies for a
H2020-WATER-2015- WATER INNOVATION project. The project partners will cooperate for the
development of innovative technologies aiming to improve water management in aquatic areas
subjected to anthropogenic pressures. The outcome of the project will be prototypes and remediation
techniques that can either be used as alternatives to conventional dredging, capping, and upland
disposal techniques.

Description
Although the chemical quality of water bodies has significantly improved in the last decades,
almost half of Europe’s freshwaters are at risk of not achieving good ecological status with
adverse effects on biodiversity and public health and hampering the provision of ecosystem
services. As a result, to maintain and improve the essential functions of our water ecosystems,
we need to manage them well by developing operational solutions to solve water pollution
challenge. BOWLINE intends to develop innovative technologies to improve water management
in aquatic areas subjected to anthropogenic pressures. Thus, BOWLINE would focus on: a)
Eco-friendly methods for removing pollutants and particles from bottom waters and sediments
and b) ex situ remediation techniques for treating legal and emerging pollutants in sediments.
Advantages and Innovations
The research project aims to study new solutions for the recovery of silts nearby repayment;
projects defusing the pollutant load, the productive re-use; the study and implementation of
systems for the selective removal of the silts without environmental damage; to find new
systems recovery of non-polluting inert sandy during and after the "cleansing" for even larger
beds segments. The outcome of the project will be prototypes and remediation techniques that
can either be used as alternatives to conventional dredging, capping, and upland disposal
techniques. Large scale demonstration studies will allow examining in realistic conditions the
feasibility of innovative products and techniques.
