W hat was your inspiration for Tatou?
Tatou began life as a luminaire that crosses a traditional dome style with a surface that is
interpreted through a creative language to screen and let the light filter through from inside.
The first prototypes were suspension models, but they immediately bred into a family. Development in various sizes and situations in the domestic environment came naturally. The process
began by looking for different ways to reconstruct membranes, conceived like Japanese armour:
a series of metal buckles cleverly united by tapes with a powerful emotional value. There
was then a process of simplification into overlapping, perforated, vertical bands riveted
together. We translated the design into a mass production process by transitioning to injection
moulding. The overlapping of these bands has been crystallised in three-dimensional leather,
a variable section mould and by the geometric pattern. With Flos, the challenge was to obtain a
mass produced product, while retaining strong artisan connotations.

Tatou is French for armadillo: the mammal famous for its structure made up of plates of
bone covered with a protective layer of horn. ‘Tatou’ has an emotional sound to it, which I
think is consistent with the emotional function of this object.
In a period of tech nological revolution in t he lighting sector, is

In Tatou’s case, the dome shape acts as a filter for the light source. But whatever evolutions of the light source there may be, the form of the luminaire continues to be a decisive
factor in creating a light that floods the lamp and filters through discretely to the eyes. This
creates a harmonious play of light and shadow through the shade’s three-dimensional, perforated leather. In this context, the shadow plays as important a role as the light. The colour
too acts in a decisive way for the final lighting effect. Our decision to produce Tatou in three
colour versions is not only an aesthetic one, but has the precise intention of obtaining different
lighting effects.
W hy was a poly m er m aterial chosen for t his la m p?
The aim was to offer a sophisticated, high quality product, but at a competitive price.
We achieved success by using a complicated process. The choice of a material like injection
moulded methacrylate/polycarbonate is also linked both to its lightness and non-fragility, as
well as to the possibility of using it with a three-dimensional mould, in such a way as to obtain
mass production, without affecting the original concept of the bands in the armour. The dome
is simplified into four identical modules that speed up assembly. Methacrylic/polycarbonate
is also a material that interacts with the light and lends itself to different effects depending on
the proportions between its components of milkiness, opacity and colour. We performed many
tests to find the perfect final combination of these three components, and managed like this
to give a polymer material a sense of preciousness. And we are planning to experiment with
moulding using new bio polymers too.

Tatou est née comme un luminaire mêlant la traditionnelle coupole avec un langage de
recherche sur sa surface, pour faire écran à la lumière et la faire briller à l’intérieur. Les premiers prototypes ont été les suspensions, mais on a créé une famille complète. La recherche
sur différentes dimensions et différentes situations dans l’espace domestique se fait naturellement. Le processus a commencé en recherchant différentes façons de reconstruire des
membranes conçues à la manière des armures japonaises: un ensemble de boucles en métal
savamment attachées par des rubans à forte valeur émotionnelle. Il y a eu un travail de simplification en bandes verticales perforées superposées et fixées par des rivets. Nous avons traduit la recherche en un vrai processus industrialisable, en faisant passer les moules à injection.
La superposition de ces bandes s’est cristallisée en une peau en trois dimensions, un moule à la
section variable et au motif géométrique. Avec Flos, le défi a été d’obtenir un produit en série,
tout en maintenant une forte connotation artisanale.
D’où vient le no m Tatou?

En français, le tatou est un mammifère connu pour sa structure de plaques osseuses recouvertes d’une couche protectrice. « Tatou » est un mot à la sonorité affective qui selon moi,
correspond tout à fait à la fonction émotionnelle de cet objet.

Dans le cas de Tatou, la forme en coupole sert de filtre à la source lumineuse. Mais quelle
que soit l’évolution des sources, la forme du luminaire reste déterminante pour créer une lumière
qui inonde l’appareil même et brille discrètement dans les yeux; ainsi naît un jeu harmonieux
d’ombre et de lumière à travers les perforations de la peau tridimensionnelle de l’abat-jour.
Dans ce contexte, le rôle de l’ombre est alors aussi important que celui de la lumière. La couleur aussi est déterminante pour l’éclairage final. Notre choix de fabriquer Tatou dans trois
coloris différents ne répond pas seulement à un critère esthétique mais à une recherche précise de différents effets lumineux.

di effetti luminosi diversi.

L’ambition était celle d’offrir un produit recherché et de qualité mais à un prix compétitif.
Nous y sommes parvenus grâce à un processus complexe. En plus, le choix d’un matériau
comme le méthacrylate - polycarbonate moulé par injection s’explique tant par sa légèreté
et son absence de fragilité que par la possibilité de le travailler avec un moule en trois dimensions, permettant ainsi d’obtenir une production industrielle tout en conservant le concept
original des bandes de la coque. La calotte est simplifiée en quatre modules identiques qui
facilitent les temps de montage. Enfin, le méthacrylate - polycarbonate est un matériau qui
interagit avec la lumière et qui se prête à des jeux différents selon le dosage des composants
d’opalisation, d’opacité et de couleur. Nous avons fait beaucoup d’essais pour trouver la combinaison finale parfaite entre ces trois composants, et nous avons réussi à donner un aspect
précieux à un matériau polymère. Nous projetons d’expérimenter de nouveaux polymères
organiques sur le moule.

Tatou nasce come un apparecchio illuminante che incrocia una tipologia tradizionale a
cupola con un linguaggio di ricerca sulla propria superficie, per schermare e far trasparire la
luce al suo interno. I primi prototipi nascono come sospensioni, ma diventano subito famiglia.
Viene naturale la ricerca su diverse dimensioni e situazioni nello spazio domestico. Il processo è iniziato cercando di trovare diversi modi per ricostruire delle membrane, concepite alla
maniera delle armature giapponesi: un insieme di fibbie di metallo unite sapientemente con
dei nastri dalla forte valenza emozionale. C’è stato un processo di semplificazione in fasce
traforate verticali sovrapposte e fissate tramite rivetti. Abbiamo tradotto la ricerca in un vero
processo industrializzabile, passando gli stampi ad iniezione. La sovrapposizione di queste
fasce è rimasta cristallizzata in una pelle tridimensionale, uno stampo dalla sezione variabile
e dal pattern geometrico. Con Flos, la sfida è stata quella di ottenere un prodotto seriale,
mantenendo una forte connotazione artigianale.
L’ambizione era quella di offrire un prodotto di ricerca e di qualità ma ad un prezzo competitivo. Ci siamo riusciti grazie a un processo complesso. Inoltre, la scelta di un materiale come
il metacrilato/policarbonato stampato ad iniezione è legata sia alla sua caratteristica di leggerezza e mancanza di fragilità sia alla possibilità di lavorarlo con uno stampo tridimensionale,
in modo da ottenere una produzione industriale mantenendo inalterato il concetto originale
delle fasce della corazza. La calotta è semplificata in quattro moduli identici che facilitano
i tempi di assemblaggio. Inoltre, il metacrilato/policarbonato è un materiale che interagisce
con la luce e che si presta a giochi diversi a seconda di come si dosano le componenti di opalinità, opacità e colore. Abbiamo fatto tante prove per trovare la perfetta combinazione finale
tra questi tre componenti, e siamo riusciti così a donare un senso di preziosità ad un materiale
polimerico. E’ in prospettiva la sperimentazione sullo stampo anche con nuovi bio polimeri.

Tatou entstand als Beleuchtungsgerät, das einen traditionellen Typ mit Kuppel und die Suche
nach Ausdruck an der eigenen Oberfläche in sich vereint, um das Licht abzuschirmen und es in
das Innere durchscheinen zu lassen. Die ersten Prototypen wurden als Aufhängungen konzipiert,
wurden jedoch sofort zur Familie. Es folgte die Forschung nach unterschiedlichen Abmessungen
und Situationen im Wohnbereich. Der Prozess begann mit der Suche nach unterschiedlichen Modellen, um Membrane nachzubilden, die gemäß den japanischen Rüstungen konzipiert werden:
ein Ensemble von Metallschnallen, die sorgfältig mit Bändern zusammengehalten werden und von
emotionalem Wert sind. Es handelte sich um einen Vereinfachungsprozess mit vertikalen, durchstochenen und übereinander gelagerten Bändern, die mit Nieten befestigt sind. Wir machten die
Forschung mittels Spritzguss zu einem regelrechten Industrieprozess. Die Übereinanderlagerung
dieser Bänder kristallisiert sich in einer dreidimensionalen Haut, einer Gussform mit variablem
Querschnitt und geometrischem Muster. Bei Flos bestand die Herausforderung darin, ein Serienprodukt zu erhalten, ohne das ausgeprägte handwerkliche Flair zu vernachlässigen.

encontrar diferentes maneras de reconstruir unas membranas, inspiradas en las armaduras
japonesas: un conjunto de hebillas de metal unidas a conciencia a unas cintas con un fuerte valor emocional. Ha habido un proceso de simplificación de las tiras perforadas verticales superpuestas y fijadas mediante remaches. Hemos traducido la búsqueda en un verdadero proceso
industrializable, pasando los moldes a inyección. El solapamiento de estas tiras se ha quedado
cristalizado en una piel tridimensional, un molde de sección variable y de patrón geométrico.
Con Flos, el reto ha sido el de obtener un producto en serie, manteniendo una fuerte connotación artesanal.

¿De dónde nace el no m bre ‘Tatou’?
Tatou bedeutet im Französischen „Gürteltier“– ein Säugetier, das für seine Knochenplattenstruktur
bekannt ist, die von einer verhornten Schutzschicht bedeckt ist. „Tatou“ ist ein Terminus mit affektivem
Klang, der meiner Meinung nach der emotionalen Funktion dieses Gegenstandes entspricht.

Im Fall von Tatou fungiert die Kuppelform als Filter einer Lichtquelle. Doch unabhängig von der
Entwicklung der Quelle bleibt die Form des Geräts der entscheidende Faktor bei der Gestaltung
eines Lichts, das das Gerät durchflutet und diskret zu den Augen durchscheint. Auf diese Weise
entsteht durch die dreidimensionale Haut und das Durchdringen des Lampenschirms ein harmonisches Licht-Schatten-Spiel. Der Schatten spielt in diesem Zusammenhang eine ebenso wichtige
Rolle wie das Licht. Auch die Farbe ist für den endgültigen Lichteffekt entscheidend. Unsere
Entscheidung, Tatou in drei Farbversionen herzustellen, hat nicht nur ästhetische Gründe, sondern
entspricht auch einer präzisen Erforschung unterschiedlicher Lichteffekte.

a los ojos; de este modo nace un juego armónico de luz y de sombra a través de la piel tridimensional y perforada de la pantalla. En este contexto, la sombra tiene un rol tan importante como
el que tiene la luz. El color es también determinante para el efecto luminoso final. La decisión de
realizar Tatou en tres colores, no responde solo a una elección estética, sino a una búsqueda
concreta de efectos luminosos diferentes.

La ambición era la de ofrecer un producto de calidad que nace de la investigación pero a un
precio competitivo. Lo hemos conseguido gracias a un proceso complejo. Además, la elección
de un material como el metacrilato/policarbonato moldeado mediante inyección está ligada
tanto a su característica de ligereza y poca fragilidad, como a la posibilidad de trabajar con
un moldeado tridimensional, para obtener de este modo una producción industrial manteniendo
inalterado el concepto original de las tiras de la coraza. La cúpula está simplificada en cuatro
módulos idénticos que facilitan los tiempos de montaje. Además, el metacrilato/policarbonato
es un material que interactúa con la luz y que se presta a diferentes juegos dependiendo de
cómo se dosifican los componentes de opalescencia, opacidad y color. Hemos hecho muchas
pruebas para encontrar la combinación final perfecta entre estos tres componentes, y de este
modo hemos conseguido darle un sentido de preciosismo a un material polimérico. Está en proyecto realizar una experimentación del molde también con nuevos bio polímeros.
Die Ambition bestand darin, ein erlesenes und qualitativ hochwertiges Produkt zu einem konkurrenzfähigen Preis anzubieten. Dies ist uns dank eines komplexen Prozesses gelungen. Zudem
ist die Entscheidung für ein Material wie spritzgegossenes Methacrylat/Polycarbonat sowohl auf
dessen Eigenschaften in puncto Leichtigkeit und Robustheit als auch auf die Möglichkeit, es mit einer
dreidimensionalen Form zu bearbeiten, zurückzuführen. Auf diese Weise erhält man ein Industrieprodukt, ohne dabei das ursprüngliche Konzept der Rüstungsbänder zu vernachlässigen. Die Kappe
wurde zu vier identischen Modulen vereinfacht, die die Montage erleichtern. Außerdem ist
Methacrylat/Polycarbonat ein Material, das mit dem Licht interagiert und je nach Dosierung der
Komponenten Opaleszenz, Trübung und Farbe unterschiedliche Nuancen aufweist. Wir führten
zahlreiche Tests durch, um schließlich die perfekte Kombination aus diesen drei Komponenten zu
finden, und es ist uns gelungen, einem Polymermaterial einen Hauch von Kostbarkeit zu verleihen.
