 Read the text and try to do some quizes below.
Pocahontas was born in 1595.
She was the beautiful daughter of Powhatan who was the important
chief of native American tribes.
Pocahontas was a princess because her father was an important
man.
She belonged to the Algonquin tribe.
She tried hard to promote peace between her people
and the English colonists.
Pocahontas managed to learn to speak English.

Pocahontas
Pocahontas was her nickname. She had three names in total.
“Mataoka“ which meant little snow feather, “ Amonte “ which was
her parents´ name for her and “Pocahontas“ which meant lively
or naughty one.
Pocahontas traded with the colonists and carried messages
from her father to them.
The algonquin tribe traded maize and they ate bread made
from the flour.
Copper was also highly treasured by Powhatan.

Pocahontas
When Pocahontas was 17, the Powhatans and the English started
fighting again.
Pocahontas was kidnapped and held hostage by the colonists.
She stayed in prison for a year.
She became a Christian and she was renamed Rebecca.
In 1614, she married a tobacco planter John Rolfe.
This helped the end the war between the Powhatans
and the English colonists.

Two years later Rebecca and her family went to England to be
successful.
Unfortunately, while she was in England she met
the King of England, James 1st.
On the voyage back home she got ill and died in England.
She was only 22.
