The Czechoslovak Baptist Convention of USA
and Canada exists 1) to assist in extending the
gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in lands of central and eastern Europe, particularly the Czech
and Slovak Republics; 2) to support the work
of Baptists and other evangelical churches
in North America that minister to persons of
Czech and Slovak descent, and 3) to provide a
Christian context for worship, fellowship, teaching, and appreciation of heritage among those
in the United States and Canada who bear
interest in the nationalities we represent.

Československá baptistická konvence Spojených států a Kanady byla ustanovena za účelem:
1) napomáhat v šíření evangelia našeho Pána
Ježíše Krista v zemích střední a východní Evropy,
zvláště v České a Slovenské republice; 2) podporovat práci baptistů a jiných evangelikálních
církví v severní Americe, které slouží českým
a slovenským potomkům; 3) předkládat formu
bohoslužby, obecenství a učení, vážit si dědictví

Making Decisions in the Light of God’s Word
A
s a visitor steps into an art gallery, he or
she is met with a special atmosphere.
This atmosphere is created by the artists’
work, thoughtfully placed throughout the gallery
space. The artist’s spirit coming forth from each
piece connects with and speaks to the visitor.
The aware visitor absorbs it all, sinking into a
cloud of euphoria, and forms an impression
walking through the exhibition. This impression
is reflected in the visitor’s final opinion of the
entire exhibition.
Just as the different techniques used by artists
speak to the visitor, so the Czechoslovak Baptist
Convention spoke to its participants through a
whole range of talents. A person’s specific character is encrypted with gifts. Gifts entrusted to a
person at birth will develop only with purposeful
focus. In other words, an individual is fully aware
of his or her gift and for that reason focuses on
developing and expanding it. This gift he or she
then uses to the advantage of the whole of society.
Only in this way can there be total inner fulfillment and balance, which is extremely important
to the existence of a whole human being. The history of our convention confirms this deduction.
In the life of a person dedicated to God, every
decision is underscored by faith. This revealed
itself practically not only in the beginnings of this
convention, but also throughout its more than
100 years of existence. This year’s theme, “Decisions of Faith,” surely motivates us to scrutinize
our decisions in the light of God’s Word. Readers,
step into this gallery and soak in the atmosphere
of the 102nd Czechoslovak Baptist Convention!

Rozhodování ve světle Božího Slova
P
ři vstupu do galerie umění na návštěvníka
dýchne zvláštní atmosféra. Vytváří ji díla
umělců, která jsou důmyslně rozmístněna
v prostoru výstavní síně. Umělcův duch, vystupující z díla, naváže kontakt s duchem návštěvníka a hovoří k němu. Návštěvník vnímá a v
úžasu vstřebává. Ponořuje se do oblaku vznikající
euforie. A jak tak prochází expozicí, formuje se
jeho dojem. Vzniklý dojem se potom odrazí v
konečném názoru návštěvníka na celou expozici.
Jako navštěvníka umělecké galerie osloví
široká škála různých technik vytvářejících velkolepá díla, tak nutně oslovila 102. Československá baptistická konvence své účastníky celou
řadou talentů. Co člověk, to charakter a talent
se zakódovanými dary. Dary svěřené člověku na
jeho prvopočátku se rozvinou pouze s cílevědomým zaměřením. Jinými slovy, jedinec si je plně

vědom svého obdarování, a proto se zaměří na
rozvinutí a zdokonalení daného daru. Tento
dar potom použije ve prospěch celé společnosti.
Jedině tak může dojít k plnému vnitřnímu
uspokojení a rovnováze, která je velmi důležitá
v samotné existenci člověka. Historie naší konvence tuto dedukci potvrzuje.
V životě Pánu Bohu oddanému člověku je
kažké rozhodnutí podmíněno vírou. To se prakticky projevilo nejen při založení naší konvence,
ale i v průběhu její, přes 100 let trvající existence. Heslo letošní konvence Rozhodnutí víry
jistě motivuje k tomu, aby naše rozhodování byla
zpytována ve světle Božího Slova.
Nuže čtenáři, vstup do galerie, listuj a vstřebávej atmosféru 102. Československé baptistické
konvence!

From the President
A
number of high
notes came out of
our 102nd Convention meeting this
past July in Philippi, WV. We
experimented some with our
schedule and programming. It
worked well. We confronted
some major questions about
the life and health of the
convention. Conclusions
were positive. We profited
from the presence and
preaching of Dr. John
Upton, president of the
Baptist World Alliance.
His input touched the
soul of the convention. We
took note of some major
organizational transitions
underway. The thought of
changing some of our ways
spooked no one.
In this world we expect
change to be happening.
Moment by moment, even,
it happens. But all the
shifts occurring in life, to
a Christian’s way of thinking, take place within
a certain fundamental
stability promised by
the Scriptures. 1) The
Lord our God never
changes in existence
or purposes. 2)
Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday,
today, and forever.
3) The gospel holds
steady like a Rock of
Gibraltar, regardless of the world’s believing or rejections. 4) Our mandate from
Christ to disclose God’s love and grace to
a “lost” humankind has no ending.
So we are taking our own experience
of change here and now in stride, for this
much is absolutely firm to us: we believe

God has everything in hand. Our ways
may change; the mission, however, is
locked in place. It will be that way, I’m
convinced, even as new leadership steps
into place, as a new location for the 103rd
Convention is tested next summer, as we
explore deeper, more meaningful connections with our ties to the evangelical and
Baptist communities in Central Europe.
We ask you to pray for actions and
vitality of the life of this convention. We
want our commitments to the Lord and to
each other to be stronger than ever before,
and easily observable to anybody who
pays attention to what we say, think, and
do in the name of Jesus Christ. The times
through which we are living appear more
and more uncertain, and some orders of
the world that have heretofore held sway
and some assumptions by which people
have lived in recent times are undergoing
deep questioning, even attack. But these
circumstances may be providing a context
in which the world becomes increasingly
attentive over the long haul to the good
word of Jesus and the final hope that is
in him for the nations and all people. We
mean to be on the scene when this happens, faithfully doing our part as he gives
strength to the cause.
To that end, I am thinking to myself,
the Lord may be planting in us a new
imagination for our life together and reequipping us for the days to come. I hope
so. Don’t you?
The pages of this magazine, Glorious
Hope, will keep you informed on our
developing story. The next issue will bring
word from the mid-year meeting of the
convention’s General Board, set for the
end of October.

Our New Location
In the last 12 months, we have been actively
pursuing the project of relocation of our annual
convention. After twenty-two years of meeting in
Philippi WV, and a growing Canadian delegate
base, we felt that moving the convention closer
to the Canadian border would be beneficial. The
General Board as well as the Business Meeting
of our 102nd Convention approved a visit of our
delegation to Allegheny College in Meadville
PA. On August 4, 2011, we visited the campus
in Meadville, and the decision was made that the
103rd Annual Convention will be held at the new
location. Those of you with access to our website
can take the guided tour of the campus or explore
the area on your own—directions, maps, and area
attractions.
We are very excited about the move. We feel
that the campus of Allegheny College meets the
needs of our convention and offers a family-oriented stay and attractions. In the next few issues
of Glorious Hope we plan to introduce Allegheny
College to you through articles, photos and online
links. Meanwhile, book your calendar: July 5–8,
2012. We hope that you will join us.
We appreciate your encouragement, emails
and letters received in the last few months. Please

Calling for Old Photos
W
e hope you enjoyed the previous issue of Glorious Hope and the glance back in time
at those who came before us as much as we enjoyed putting it together. It is hard to
imagine what it must have been like, being the first generation in a new country, with
an unfamiliar language and few friends. The photos and books that remain tell only a little part
of their story. And while it isn’t good to dwell on the past, knowing where one has come from
can certainly help guide and aid us when we are faced with similar problems. At the very least,
it helps us to connect to a bygone era and understand what it was like to be a Christian in the
early 20th century. Think of how helpful all of Paul’s letters have been to countless Christians.
Here’s how you can help. If you have any old memorabilia related to the Czechoslovak Baptist Convention, please consider sending them to us to copy. We are looking for old photos,
slides, letters, bulletins, programs, books, Slavná Naděje, Pravda, Pravda a Slavná Naděje, Zora
or anything else related to the Czechoslovak Baptist Convention. All items will be returned to
you unless you wish to donate them to the Convention for the archives. In time, we wish to
add an archives section to the CZSKBC.org webpage for all to see (similar to the back issues of
Glorious Hope).

A
fter an enjoyable drive from
Windsor, Stan and I arrived
in Philippi just before dinner
on the Wednesday night. At
supper we met many old friends and had
a chance to visit with a few people. That
evening we took a leisurely walk all around
the Alderson Broaddus Campus and reminisced about our past visits to the convention. We remembered the days when
our children came with us and all the fun
they had. We talked about the times we
had led the children’s programs and all
the children who used to come. We just
enjoyed taking in the beauty of the hills of
West Virginia and the peacefulness of the
surroundings. It is always good to return
to a place with happy memories.
Thursday arrived and after breakfast
we attended the General Board Meeting. In the afternoon we went off for an
afternoon of shopping, and then in the
evening the first service was held. We were
privileged once again to hear the choir
of the Philippi Baptist Church. The first
sermon in the series, Decisions of Faith,
was entitled Enoch’s Believing. It was

preached by Pastor Stan Mantle. What
can we say about Enoch’s walking with
God? It involved communion, commitment and completion, a formula which
is still potent for going with God off the
regular path. We don’t know when the
journey will be over, so the only thing to
do is to be on the path walking with God
every day.
Friday morning came and we tried
something new. The men and ladies each
had their own breakfasts. I heard that
the men’s meeting was very enjoyable
with a memorable parable retold, about
making lemonade, with application to
the Christian life, namely, that we had
better save some of the gospel for local
(personal) consumption. There was great

fellowship over the ladies’ breakfast, and
then our program focused on missions.
Highlights were a Skype call with Ruby
Mikulencak from Ghana and a presentation by a young couple, the Váhalas, who
are hoping to go to the Czech Republic
as missionaries. I heard many positive
comments about these breakfasts and
hope they continue in the future. Friday
evening we enjoyed the singing of the
convention choir and an inspirational
message from our dear president, Bob
Dvorak, on Noah’s building. He told us:
“By faith Noah built an ark.” This is what
God called him to do. Bob challenged us
in his inimitable style and good nature
that God has something specific for us all
to do and if we haven’t found it yet, time
is a-wasting and we need to get to it.
After preaching, Bob led us in a wonderful old-fashioned hymn sing, and then
we heard several musical selections from
different people. It was a great evening of
song, the Word and fellowship.
On Saturday morning the youth
headed out for a day at the state park.
After breakfast, we older folk were led
in a wonderful Bible study by Kathy
Shereda, in which she looked at Enoch,
Noah, Abraham and Moses. It was very

enlightening and full of so much
good information. We then had
our business meeting, where
we discussed the idea of moving the convention to a new
college. Discussion was very
positive and it is now official:
the 103rd Convention will be
moving to Allegheny College in
Meadville, Pennsylvania. In the
afternoon we took a drive out to
the nearby state park and went
down to the river, remembering
the days when we climbed on
the rocks and swam in the river.
At supper we held our banquet
and once again there was great fellowship
with friends and a very delicious meal.
We ate too much but it was so good.
Saturday evening was led by our youth
and they did a wonderful job. We heard
from the Váhala family and their plans
to go to the Czech Republic. The little
skit done by their kids, of missionaries
in the past, was great. The youth choir
sang and many of the children and youth
performed for us. What a blessing it
was to hear the young ones share their
gifts. The message was brought by Dr.
John Upton, the president of the Baptist
World Alliance. He spoke on Abraham’s
going. His message challenged us with
the insight: “The Church thinks it is in
the church business but it is actually in
the Kingdom business, building God’s
Kingdom…. We need to find our path
again, a faith willing to find its adventure
and to risk again.” After the service the
young and the young at heart enjoyed
watching the movie Remember the Titans.
Sunday morning arrived, a beautiful
sunny day. After breakfast we were challenged by a memorable devotional by
Niko Mulder, brought home by a travel
bag with interesting contents. Niko
reminded us that God has a purpose, a
blueprint and a plan for our lives. The
memorial service was held, when we
remembered those in our convention
who had passed away in the last year.
This was followed by the Sunday service,
with the convention choir singing beau-

tifully once again. We were also graced
with the wonderful music of Maria at
the piano and Dottie at the organ. Dr.
Upton challenged us from God’s word
on the subject of Moses’ choosing. He
noted that Moses’ choosing involved
refusing, choosing and persevering. Any
walk with God, Dr. Upton remarked,
begins with a grand refusal. We have
become consumers rather than producers. We need to refuse self-centredness
and the materialism of the world. Moses
chose to lead God’s children out of Egypt
and be in the desert with them for forty
years. When we make choices for God,
miracles happen. The third point related
to perseverance. This involves discipline.
Dr. Upton related a camping trip he
took some young people on once, which
involved a hard trek up a mountain.
He was tired of being the leader after
just a few hours and marveled at Moses’
perseverance in leading the children of
Israel in the desert for forty years. He
concluded by saying that if we will do
these things we will be transformed, and
the world along with us. After this we
had our communion service and then
the famous group picture.
We left the convention having been
refreshed and encouraged. We look forward to the things our great God has in
store for the convention on the journey
ahead. Don’t miss out on the next stage

Vzpomínky na 102. Československou
baptistickou konvenci
P
o příjemné cestě z Windsoru
jsme se Stanem dorazili do
Philippi krátce před večeří ve
středu večer. Hned při večeři
jsme se setkali s mnohými starými
přáteli a mohli jsem si vzájemně popovídat. Ten večer jsme se šli projít celým
areálem Alderson–Broaddus a vzpomínali jsme na naše předchozí návštěvy na
konvenci. Připoměli jsme si dny, kdy s
námi jezdívaly naše děti, a na všechnu
tu zábavu, kterou měly. Mluvili jsme o
tom, jak jsme vedli programy pro děti, a
o všech těch dětech, které jezdívaly. Prostě jsme se ponořili do nádhery kopců
Západní Virginie a do mírumilovného
okolí. Vždy je to krásné vracet se do
míst šťasných vzpomínek.
Přišel čvrtek, po snídani jsme se
zúčastnili schůze hlavního výboru.
Odpoledne jsme se vytratili na nákupy
a večer bylo první shromáždění. Znovu
jsme mohli slyšet pěvecký sbor Philipp8

ského baptistického sboru. První kázání
ze série Rozhodnutí víry bylo nazváno
Enochova víra. Kázal Stan Mantle. Co
víme o Enochovém chození s Bohem?
Jednalo se o společenství, odevzdání a
naplnění, pravidlo, které stále platí při
běžném následování Boží cesty. Nevíme,
kdy tato cesta skončí, nezbývá nic
jiného, než kráčet s Bohem každý den.
V pátek ráno jsme zkusili něco
nového. Muži i ženy snídali sice odděleně, ale zato s programem. Slyšela
jsem, že setkání mužů bylo velmi pěkné.
Vyslechli si pozoruhodné alegorické
vyprávění o výrobě citronády s aplikací
do života křesťana, a sice, že bychom
také měli mít evangelium k dispozici k
vlastní potřebě. Snídaně žen probíhala v
přátelské pohodě, program byl zaměřen
na misii. Hlavním bodem byl rozhovor
s Ruby Mikulencakovou z Ghany v
přímém spojení přes Skype a presentace
mladého manželského páru Váhalových,
kteří se chystají jít do České republiky jako misionáři. Ohledně snídaně
s programem jsem zaslechla hodně
pozitivních komentářů a přání, aby se
opakovala i příště.
V pátek večer posloužil konvenční
pěvecký sbor, a potom jsme vyslechli
inspirující kázání nášeho milého prezidenta Boba Dvoraka o Noemově stavbě.
Řekl nám: „S vírou Noe stavěl koráb.“
K tomu ho Bůh povolal. Bob nás dobrosrdečně vyzval svým nenapodobitelným způsobem, že Bůh má pro každého
z nás konkrétní poslání, a pokud o něm

ještě nevíme, marníme čas a musíme s
tím něco dělat. Zpěv oblíbených starých
písní pod Bobovým vedením následoval
po kázání. Slyšeli jsme také několik dalších hudebních příspěvků. Byl to krásný
večer písní, Slova a obecenství.
V sobotu ráno se mládež vypravila na
celý den do národního parku. My starší
jsme se po snídani zúčastnili biblické
hodiny, kterou výborně vedla Kathy
Shereda a ve které jsme se zamýšleli
nad Enochem, Noemem, Abrahámem
a Mojžíšem. Hodně jsme se dozvěděli a
bylo to velmi poučné. Po té následovalo
konvenční zasedání, na kterém se diskutovalo o možnosti přemístění konvence
na jinou univerzitu. Diskuse proběhla
příznivě a nyní to je již oficiální: 103.
konvence se přestěhuje na Univerzitu
Allegheny v Meadville, v Pennsylvánii.
Odpledne jsme si zajeli do nedalekého
národního parku a prošli jsme se kolem
řeky, připomínajíce si dny, kdy jsme
lezli po skalách a plavali v řece. V době
večeře jsme měli banket a opět to bylo
krásné obecenství s přáteli a velmi chutným jídlem. Tak nám chutnalo, že jsme
se málem přejedli. Vedení sobotního
večera se ujala naše mládež a počínala
si velmi dobře. Rodina Váhalova nás
seznámila se svými plány pracovat v
České republice. Malá scénka o misio-
nářích v minulosti, předvedena jejich
dětmi, byla senzační. Skupina mládeže
nám zazpívala a také děti učinkovaly
v dalším programu. Jaké to požehnání naslouchat dětským talentům!
Večer kázal Dr. John Upton, prezident
Světového svazu baptistů. Hovořil na
téma Abrahámova odchodu. Při jeho
kázání nás oslovil tento pohled: „Církev
se domnívá, že je to věcí cirkve, ale týká
se to především království, budování
Božího království... Potřebujeme znovu
najít svou cestu, víru se na ní pustit a
znovu podstoupit riziko.“ Po večerním
shromáždění se mládež i mladí duchem
shlédli film Remember the Titans.
Přišlo nedělní ráno, krásný slunečný
den. Po snídani jsme byli osloveni
zajímavou modlitební chvílí vedenou
Nico Mulderem, který si přinesl cestovní tašku se zajímavým obsahem.
Nico zdůraznil, že Bůh má s našimi
životy svůj úmysl, plán a určení. Pak
následovala chvíle vzpomínek na ty z
naší konvence, kteří nás během minulého roku opustili. Potom začalo nedělní
shromáždění, při kterém moc pěkně
posloužil pěvecký sbor konvence. Marija
za piánem a Dottie u varhan nás vyznamenaly úžasným přednesem. Dr. Upton
kázal z Božího Slova o Mojžíšově volbě.
Poukázal na to, že Mojžíšova volba
zahrnovala odmítnutí, volbu a vytrvalost. Každé chození s Bohem, uvedl
Dr. Upton, začíná s velkým zapřením.
Namísto producentů stali jsme se konzumenty. Je zapotřebí nesoustřeďovať se
na sama sebe a odmítnout materialismus
tohoto světa. Mojžíš se rozhodl vyvést
Boží děti z Egypta a putovat s nimi po
poušti čtyřicet let. Když se rozhodneme
pro Boha, dějí se zázraky. Třetí bod se
vztahoval na vytrvalost. Tam musí být
disciplína. Dr. Upton za příklad uvedl
svou zkušenost z výletu mládeže; jednalo
se o obtížný výstup do hor.
Jako vůdce byl unaven již po
několika hodinách a žasl nad
Mojžíšovou vytrvalostí být v
putování po poušti čtyřicet let
v čele potomků Izraele. Pokud
budeme takto jednat, budeme
přeměněni a svět kolem nás s
námi, ukončil. Po kázání následovala večeře Páně, a potom již
pověstná skupinová fotografie.
Z konvence jsme odjížděli
občerstveni a povzbuzeni.

Union. Everybody enjoyed it. You came with something new and
people were really appreciating that. And I would like to know how
you feel about it, what impression this convention has had on you.

I feel that this convention really had a mission focus. For
the Ladies’ Missionary Union breakfast, I tried to make it a
mission focus because we are the Ladies’ Missionary Union.
We were so privileged to be able to speak with Ruby and we
were so privileged to have the Vahala family with us. They
will be leaving for the Czech Republic soon after Christmas
time, and I thought it was very important to bring mission
close to the people so that people could really understand
what the needs of missionaries are, what their struggles are,
their high points, their focuses, what their mission focuses
are going to be. And I think that we were challenged by Dr.
John Upton as well, to go out into the world and really make
it difference. It is not good enough just to sit back. We have
to go and we need to make a difference whatever our mission
field is. It could be where we live or where we work. We’re not
all called to go overseas. No matter where we are, we have to
make that difference.

Debbie, výborně jsi se zhostila vedení Sesterské misijní jednoty. Všem se to líbílo. Přišla jsi s něčím novým a lidé to skutečně
ocenili. Chtěla bych vědět, jaké prožíváš pocity, jak na tebe tato
konvence zapůsobila.

Jsem přesvědčena, že tato konvence byla skutečně zaměřena na misii. Co se týče snídaně Sesterské misijní jednoty,
úmyslně jsem se zaměřila na misii již kvůli našemu názvu
Sesterská misijní jednota. Byly jsme poctěny přímým rozhovorem s Ruby a také přítomností Váhalových. Chystají
se po Vánocích do České republiky, myslela jsem si, že je
velmi důležité lidem misii přiblížit, aby opravdu porozuměli
potřebám misionářů, jejich zápasům, jejich zaměření, jejich
budoucím misijním zájmům. A byli jsme také vyzváni Dr.
Johnem Uptonem, abychom vyšli do světa a skutečně způsobili změny. Nesmíme se držet zpátky. Musíme vyjít a přinést změny, ať je naše misijní poslání jakékoliv. Může to být
naše bydliště nebo zaměstnání. Nejsme všichni volání jít do
zámoří. Nezáleží na tom, kde jsme, musíme přinášet změny.

We used to go a long time ago. I think the last time I was here it was the mid-nineties. And we
just came to see how it looks these days and just to see familiar faces and see the surroundings as well.
Kdysi jsme na konvenci jezdívali. Myslím, že naposledy, kdy jsem tu byl, bylo někdy v devadesátých letech. Přijeli jsme, abychom viděli, jak to tu teď vypadá, a setkat se známými tvářemi, a i také
to okolí.

I came as well just to see our familiar faces and reconnect and kind of remove some of the childhood,
to see some of the good friends and you know spend some good time and connect together with God
again and all that stuff, so it‘s always a good time.
Také jsem se přijel setkat se známými a znovu navázat spojení; a tak nějak se zbavit dětského
pohledu, setkat se s dobrými přáteli a také zase strávit užitečné chvíle s Bohem a podobně; vždy si to
užijeme.

I always had a good time in Philppi, so I came again and I am having a good time. And this time I
have Sydney with me, my fourteen-month-old daughter to show her, but she is not going to remember
anything. But I found some people I haven’t seen for a while. It is always a good time in Philippi, so
it’s worth the trip.
Ve Philippi je vždy dobře, tak jsem přijel zase a cítím se tu dobře. Tentokrát mám s sebou dcerku
Sydney, je jí čtrnáct měsíců, abych jí to ukázal, i když si asi nic pamatovat nebude. Chtěl jsem se setkat
s některými, které jsem dlouho neviděl. Je to tu senzační, stojí to za tu cestu.

I have been coming to the convention since I remember, probably in the eighties, so that was something I always looked forward to. Last year, unfortunately, that was one year that I missed because my
sister and I both got married, but I look forward to coming again even though we missed one year. You
don’t realize how much you are missing until you miss one year. And my dad couldn’t come this year
and neither could my husband, so I actually came with my mom. So it is really nice to spend some
time with my mom and be able to worship and hear God’s word here at this convention.
Na konvenci jezdím, co jen pamatuji, pravděpodobně někdy od osmdesátých let. Bylo to něco, na
co jsem se vždycky těšila. Žel, loňský rok jsem chyběla, protože jsme se vdávaly, moje sestra i já. Těšila
jsem se však na další. Neuvědomíte si, o kolik jste ochuzeni, dokud jednou nevynecháte. Můj tatínek
nemohl letos přijet, ani můj manžel, tak jsem vlastně přijela s maminkou. A jsem ráda, že můžeme být
s maminkou spolu a společně se zúčastnit bohoslužeb a naslouchat Božímu Slovu na této konvenci.

I came to the 102nd Convention with my good friend Darko, and I came to the 100th as well, and
I really enjoyed it. The speaking is excellent, and the fellowship is wonderful as well.
Na 102. konvenci jsem přijel se svým přítelem Darkem. Byl jsme i na sté a velmi se mi zde líbilo.

What brought you to the 102nd CZSKBC?
Dr. Nico Mulder
I really enjoyed the 102nd Czech-Slovak Baptist Convention. Reasons for that: I felt
very safe among these people. They feel like family. And I have had some experiences
in Christian communities that were not so wonderful. I discovered that Christians
are not always to be trusted and for some reason, I said to Debbie, at the convention
I can trust these people. They are people who are so loving and they are so glad to
see each other after the year and they really share with each other and they are really
that close. And then, you know, you can see different groups–the visiting Slovaks and
Czechs, they are not Americans, but here we are one. And that is what really impressed
me very, very much. John Upton—he was excellent, he was really excellent. I could
not attend Kathy Shereda’s Bible study, but John Upton, he’s a man of stature, that’s
for sure, and the way he presented the Word of God, it was just excellent. I heard
somebody say this morning, “Man, today was wonderful.” They really enjoyed it. I
think the general feeling among the people was very different this year but the people
really enjoyed it. And I had the privilege to sit in because I helped Debbie as far I
could with the Ladies’ Missionary Union, and that was so meaningful.
We had Ruby speaking to everybody via Skype, and I would really recommend
that even in the general meeting we could communicate with the missionaries by
Skype, and they could give their reports that way if they cannot be at the convention
in person. There is another thought that I got during this convention, and it is that
we don’t have to look for well-known speakers. We have in our midst speakers that
are really wonderful. And I think we have to encourage those gifts a little bit more.
So, yes, I would say that it was wonderful. It is a watershed convention because now
that we are going to move, we could see that people were kind of hesitant about this
move. People were very, very hesitant about Bob Dvorak’s announcement that he is
going to retire next convention. Everybody is asking “So, who is going to take over?”
But in general I just want to say that it was a wonderful experience and I really,
really enjoyed it. Being at the registration with Debbie, I got to know so many more
people and, you know, I could talk to them on a first-name basis. It was just wonderful. And to see the conversations that flow out of that was really good. All in all, I
think God was glorified at this convention

The Convention gathering is a time when one can turn off the demands of everyday
life and stresses to be immersed in God’s Word amidst the beautiful scenery that is
A-B College. It is an opportunity to share with others—with friends as well with those
visiting for the very first time—about God’s Word and our everyday-life concerns. It
is an opportunity to praise our Lord for what He has given us in Jesus Christ.
I had a pleasant time with my wife on a trip to the state park, where we had the
chance to speak with a Slovak family who was on vacation in the USA. Likewise, one
young person captured our attention as he spoke of the importance of finding time
regularly to quiet oneself before the Lord and consistently read God’s Word.
Upon the completion of the historical issue of Glorious Hope, I realized that a long
history is hidden within/behind every individual convention and Glorious Hope issue.
I was delighted to see the interest with which the historical issue was received. This
has encouraged me greatly to continued work on Glorious Hope.

Co vás přivedlo na 102. konvenci?

Ze 102. Československé baptistické konvence jsem měl velký užitek. Důvody:
Cítil jsem se mezi těmito lidmi v bezpečí. Jsou jako moje rodina. Mám jisté zkušenosti s křesťanskými společenstvími, které nejsou tak skvělá. Zjistil jsem, že křesťanům se z nějakých důvodů nedá vždy věřit. Debbie jsem řekl, že na konvenci
těmto lidem mohu důvěřovat. Tito lidé jsou milující a jsou tak rádi, že zase po
roce vidí jeden druhého, a skutečně se navzájem sdílí a opravdu jsou si blízcí. A
potom, vidíte různé skupiny — Slováky a Čechy, nejsou Američany, ale zde jsme
si všichni rovni. A to je to, co na mne skutečně velmi, velmi zapůsobilo. John
Upton byl vynikající, skutečně znamenitý. Nemohl jsem být přítomen na biblické
hodině Kathy Sheredové, ale John Upton je velikán, jistotně, a způsob, jakým
vykládal Boží Slovo, byl prostě jedinečný. Dnes ráno jsem někoho zaslechl říci:
„Člověče, dnes to bylo úžasné.” Skutečně se jim to líbilo. Myslím, že celkově se
letos lidé cítili jinak, ale opravdu se jim to líbilo. Měl jsem tu výsadu být přítomen
při schůzce Sesterské misijní jednoty, pomáhal jsem Debbie, a bylo to velmi smysluplné. Ruby s námi hovořila v přímém spojení přes Skype, a to bych skutečně
doporučoval, abychom této možnosti využívali i během našich výborových schůzí,
kdy by misionáři mohli své zprávy podávat tímto způsobem, pokud by nemohli
být na konvenci přítomni osobně. Během konvence mne napadla ještě další věc, a
sice ta, že my nemusíme nutně hledat známé řečníky. Máme mezi námi skutečně
výborné řečníky. Myslím si, že bychom měli trochu více tyto dary podněcovat.
Tak tedy ano, řekl bych, že to bylo znamenité. Jedná se o určitý předěl, protože
se nyní konvence bude stěhovat a mezi lidmi bylo vidět určité rozpaky ohledně
této změny. Ještě s většími rozpaky lidé přijali oznámení Boba Dvořáka ohledně
jeho odchodu z funkce na příští konvenci. Každý se ptá: „Kdo to tedy přebere?”
Chci říci tedy, že celkově to byl úžasný prožitek a skutečně jsem si to užil. Tím, že
jsme dělali s Debbie registraci, mohl jsem poznat o mnoho více lidí osobně, a také
jsem je mohl oslovovat křestními jmény. A to bylo báječné. A rozhovory, které z
toho mimovolně vyplývaly, to bylo opravdu prospěšné. Celkově, myslím, že Bůh
byl na této konvenci důstojně oslaven.

Konvenční setkání je čas, kdy člověk může vypnout od všedních starostí a v
krásném prostředí A-B College být vnořen do Božího slova. Je to příležitost sdílet
se s ostatními — s přáteli i s lidmi, kteří jsou na konvenci poprvé — o Božím slově
i o našich každodenních starostech. Je to příležitost chválit našeho Pána za to, co
nám dává v Pánu Ježíši Kristu.
Strávili jsme pěkné chvíle s manželkou na výletu do národního parku, kde
jsme měli možnost hovořit se slovenskou rodinou, která byla v USA na návštěvě.
Rovnež nás zaujala úvaha jednoho mladého člověka o důslednosti každodenního
čtení Božího slova, o tom, jak je důležité si najít pravidelně čas na ztišení se před
Pánem Bohem.
Po dokončení historického čísla Slavné naděje jsem si uvědomil, jak dlouhá
historie je skryta za jednotlivými konvenčními setkáními i za časopisem Slavná
naděje. Potešilo mě, s jakým zájmem bylo přijato historické číslo. Bylo to pro mě
velké povzbuzení k další práci na časopisu Slavná naděje.

Dr. Upton kindly answered our curious questions:
1. Could you tell us some personal information you would like to share with readers
of Glorious Hope?
My parents were very active in a
Baptist church all my years growing up
at home. My parents met in church,
participated in the youth activities of
the church, and were later married. My
father became a deacon in our church and
my mother was a leader in the women’s
ministries of the church. Church and faith
were a major part of our family life. At
age 13 I accepted Jesus as my Lord and
Savior. That decision would later require
a major adjustment to my life’s ambitions
and dreams.

I grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, and
my dad was employed at the naval base
there as an engineer, so I was around
military installations all my life. It was my
dream to attend one of the U.S. military
academies and make the military a career.
That dream came true when I received a
Congressional appointment to West Point
and was accepted. When I received the
acceptance letter I remember being very
excited and the first person I wanted to tell
was my pastor. He was a key person in my
life and his blessing was important to me.
I shared with him the letter of acceptance
to West Point and expected him to rejoice.
Instead, he asked if I would be seated. I
did, somewhat confused. He said he could
celebrate with me if I could assure him of
one thing. I asked what that was. He said
that he had felt for some time that God
was calling me into full-time Christian
service, and if I would assure him that
God was not calling me into the ministry,
then he would rejoice. I told him I would
pray about that for a couple of days and
would get back to him. It was in those
prayer times that I knew of my calling into
the ministry. The hardest thing I ever had
to do was to tell my grandfather and parents that I would not accept the invitation
to go to West Point. I remember it was
late in August when I committed to God’s
call, so I had to scramble to find a college
that would accept me at the last minute
and offer scholarships. West Point was a
tuition-paid education. Averett University

(Averett College then) accepted me the
week before classes began and gave me
almost a full scholarship. I was able to go
to school. God was good and the journey
toward the ministry began.
The journey of serving God has been
a rich and full one. My wife Deborah
and I and our three children have had
many wonderful experiences. The Lord
called us to churches in Virginia, New
Jersey, and Texas. Deborah taught at
Baylor University for five years while I
served at Lake Shore Baptist Church.
We were later called as missionaries with
the Foreign Mission Board of the SBC
(now International Mission Board) to
serve as missionaries to Taiwan, where
we learned Mandarin and became church
planters. Due to health issues with one
of our children, we returned home. I was
invited to work for the Baptist General
Association of Virginia (BGAV) as the
missions coordinator. It was in that role
that I became an active part of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA). Since 2001
I have been the executive director of the
BGAV, and continue to serve in that
role today. In 2005 I was asked to serve
as the chair of the Congress Committee
of the BWA to plan the congress held in
Hawaii in 2010. It was at that congress
that I became the president of the BWA
for a five-year term, which will conclude
in Durban, South Africa, in 2015. It is
indeed an honor and privilege to serve
the Baptists of the world in this capacity.
As President of the BWA I have come to
see just how much God has blessed the
Baptist family and just how much He has
for us to do in His name. I’m so grateful
the Czechoslovak Baptist Convention of
the United States and Canada is a part of
this global family.
2. How do you see the role of Baptists in
today’s world?
My understanding of the role of
Baptists in the world is always widening.
In the first year of my responsibilities as
president of the BWA, my understanding
was certainly expanded. For example, I
have come to understand how much of
our Baptist family lives in settings where
they are either persecuted or oppressed.
Many do not have official standing in
their countries. They
are treated as though
they were sects and
are deprived of many
of the privileges of
society. Others are
despised and beaten
by local groups. Still
others are denied
educational opportunities or quality
jobs. It has been a big
part of my time to
travel to those countries and speak to
government officials
on their behalf. The fact that the BWA
consists of 250 Baptist bodies around
the world in over 150 countries making
up over 40 million baptized believers and
105 million in all means governments will
listen. They know we can speak to governments of other countries to protest their
treatment of Baptists and Christians. I
have been amazed at the positive response
I have received. Again, the Lord is very
good! I ask you to pray for our brothers
and sisters living in Muslim countries.
Many are at risk for their lives. Pray also
for the Karen people who live in refugee
camps along the Thai/Myanmar border.
Many are living in absolute poverty with
no hope of ever leaving the camps. Many
of the Karen are Baptists.
The world is lost and hurting. If Baptists keep their focus on their mission and
do not get absorbed in the day-to-day
stuff at home, we can change the world
for Christ.
3. What is your view on the mission of
the Czechoslovak Baptist Convention?
It has been my joy to know you for
some years now. Robert Mobley was a
dear friend and spoke of you as family
whenever we would talk. It was when
Virginia Baptists formed a partnership
with the Baptist unions in both the Czech
Republic and Slovakia that I attended my
first meeting in Philippi, West Virginia.
George and Marija Sommer became
immediate friends. In the annual meetings I have attended since, I have been
amazed at how much of the Czech and
Slovak culture has been maintained for

the younger generations, giving them
roots and a sense of foundation that provides stability and identity for their lives.
The young people seem very happy with
who they are and their heritage. The rich
tradition of music has been preserved in
ways I think could have been lost without
the convention. I have also appreciated
the way the convention continues to
support the churches back in the Czech
Republic and Slovakia. The Baptists in
both countries are a small minority and
the work is hard and slow. They need the
encouragement and support of the convention. I have been really pleased to see
the convention reaching out to other parts
of the world as well. God has given us the
security of being rooted in one culture to
reach out to all the world, respecting their
culture while sharing the good news of
Jesus Christ. It is a joy to see the convention embracing that new direction.
4. What is your message to the readers of
Glorious Hope?
Thank you for your love of our Lord,
for your energy to serve him with diligence, for your willingness to “remember”
the heroes of the convention who risked
everything to come to a new land bringing
their families and their faith, for seeing the
world through the eyes of Jesus, and for
sharing your cultures so the rest of us can
be blessed with the richness of the Czech/
Slovak world. It is my hope that you will
widen your relationship with the BWA
and bring those gifts to the BWA meetings
in the future. You will be blessed and you
will be a blessing.


1. Mohl by jste se podělit s některými
osobními údaji se čtenáři Slavné naděje?
Během mého dospívaní byli rodiče
velmi činní v baptistickém sboru. Ve sboru
se seznámili, zapojovali se do různých
mládežnických akcí a později se vzali. Otec
byl v našem sboru diakonem a matka byla
vedoucí sesterského kroužku. Sbor a víra
byly hlavní částí našeho rodinného života.
Ve 13. letech jsem přijal Ježíše jako svého
Pána a Spasitele. Toto rozhodnutí bude
později hrát závažnou roli v mých životních ambicích a snech.
Vyrůstal jsem v Norfolku, ve Virginii, otec pracoval na vojenské námořní
základně jako inženýr, a tak jsem byl celý

život obklopen vojenskou technikou.
Mým životním snem byla vojenská akademie a vojenská kariéra. Tento sen se mi
splnil, když jsem dostal kongresní určení
do West Pointu (vojenská akademie Spojených států v New Yorku) a byl jsem přijat.
Pamatuji si, že když mi přišel přijímací
dopis, byl jsem velmi nadšen, a první
člověk, kterému jsem to chtěl říci, byl můj
kazatel. Byl klíčovou postavou mého života
a jeho požehnání pro mne mnoho znamenalo. Ukázal jsem mu přijímací dopis do
West Pointu a očekával jsem, že se bude
radovat. Zeptal se mne však, zda-li bych se
mohl posadit. Posadil jsem se s určitými
rozpaky. Řekl mi, že pokud ho ujistím o
jedné věci, bude se mnou moci oslavovat.
Zeptal jsem se, o co se jedná. Řekl, že
již delší dobu cítil, že mne Bůh volal do
křesťanské práce, a pokud bych ho mohl
ujistit, že mne do duchovní služby Bůh
nevolal, tedy se bude radovat. Řekl jsme
mu, že se budu ohledně toho pár dní modlit a dám mu vědět. A právě během těchto
modlitebních chvil jsem poznal, že jsem
povolán do duchovní služby. Oznámit
mému dědečkovi a rodičům, že nepřijmu
pozvání do West Pointu, bylo tou nejtěžší
věcí, kterou jsem musel udělat. Pamatuji
si, že když jsem se odevzdal Božímu volání,
byl konec srpna a já jsem musel rychle najít
školu, která by mne přijala na poslední
chvíli a poskytovala stipendium. Ve West
Pointu bylo školné hrazeno. Byl jsem přijat na Univerzitu Averett (tenkrát Averett
College) týden před začátkem vyučování a

dostal jsem téměř plné stipendium. Mohl
jsem tedy studovat. Bůh byl laskavý a cesta
za službou začala.
Cesta v Boží službě byla bohatá a plná.
S mou ženou Deborah a našimi třemi
dětmi jsme získali mnoho úžasných zkušeností. Pán nás vedl do sborů ve Virginii,
New Jersy a Texasu. Deborah vyučovala pět
let na Baylorově univerzitě, zatímco já jsem
sloužil v baptistickém sboru v Lake Shore.
Později jsme byli povolání Zahraničním
misijním výborem Jižní baptistické konvence (nyní Mezinárodní misijní výbor)
jako misionáři do Taiwanu, kde jsme se
naučili hovořit mandarinsky. Zakládali
jsme sbory. Vzhledem k zdravotní situaci
jednoho z našich dětí jsme se vrátili domů.
Byla mi nabídnuta práce koordinátora
mise při Hlavním baptistickém sdružení
Virginie (Baptist General Association
of Virginia–BGAV). V tomto postavení
jsem se stal činnou částí Světového svazu
baptistů (Baptist Worls Alliance–BWA).
Od roku 2001 jsem výkonným ředitelem
BGAV a v této pozici stále setrvávám. V
roce 2005 jsem byl požádán předsedat
kongresnímu výboru BWA při přípravě
kongresu na Hawai v roce 2010. Na tomto
kongresu jsem se stal prezidentem BWA
na období pěti let, které bude zakončeno
v Durbanu, v Jižní Africe, v roce 2015.
Je to skutečně čest a výsada sloužit
baptististům světa v této funkci. Jako
president BWA jsem mohl vidět jak velice
Bůh požehnal baptistickou rodinu a kolik
má pro nás připraveno učinit v Jeho jméně.
Jsem velice vděčen, že Československá
baptistická konvence Spojených států a
Kanady je součástí této globální rodiny.
2. V čem, podle Vás, spočívá poslání
baptistů v dnešním světě?
Ohledně poslání baptistů ve světě se
mé poznání stále rozšiřuje. Během prvního
roku mých povinností jako prezidenta
BWA se můj pohled rozhodně rozšířil.
Například jsem poznal, jak mnozí z naší
baptistické rodiny žijí ve společenských
systémech, kde jsou buď pronásledováni,
nebo utlačováni. Nemají ve své zemi
oficiální jméno, je s nimi zacházeno, jako
kdyby byly sektou, a jsou zbavováni mnohých společenských výsad. Jinými je opovrhováno a jsou napadáni místními skupi-
nami. Dalším zase je znemožněno studium
na školách nebo slušné zaměstnání. Z
velké části jsou to právě tyto země, které
navštěvuji, a v jejich jméně hovořím s vládními představiteli. Skutečnost, že BWA se
skládá ze 250 baptistických organizací ve
více než 150 zemích, představujících přes
40 miliónů pokřtěných věřících a zastupujícich celkově 105 miliónů baptistů,
budou vlády rozhodně naslouchat. Jsou si
vědomi toho, že můžeme protestovat proti
tomu, jak s baptisty a s křesťany zacházejí.
Žasl jsem nad pozitivními ohlasy, které
jsem obdržel. Však Bůh je velmi dobrý!
Žádám vás o modlitby za naše bratry a
setry žijící v muslimských zemích. Život
mnohých je v ohrožení. Modlete se také za
Kareny, kteří žijí v utečeneckých táborech
na hranici Thajska a Myanmaru. Žijí na
hranici naprosté bídy bez naděje vůbec
někdy tábor opustit. Mnozí Kareni jsou
baptisté.
Svět je zbloudilý a raněný. Zůstanou-li baptisté zaměřeni na své poslání a
nenechají se pohltit každodenními materiálními věcmi doma, můžeme pro Krista
svět změnit.
3. V čem vidíte poslání Československé
baptistické konvenvce?
Těším se z toho, že vás znám již několik
let. Robert Mobley byl vzácný přítel a kdykoliv jsme spolu mluvili, hovořil o vás jako
o rodině. V době, kdy virginští baptisté
navázali spolupráci s Jednotou baptistů v
České republice a na Slovensku, jsem se
poprvé zůčastnil shromáždení ve Phillipi,
v Západní Virginii. Jiří a Marija Sommerovi se okamžitě stali mými přáteli. Na
výročních shromáždeních, kterých jsem
se od té doby zůčastnil, jsem byl ohromen
bohatstvím české a slovenské kultury, která
se udržela pro mladší generaci, poskytujíc
jim kořeny a vědomí původu, a zároveň
stabilitu a identitu v jejich životech. Zdá
se, že mladí lidé jsou velice spokojení se
sebou i se svým dědictvím. Myslím, že
bohatá hudební tradice by svým způsobem v konvenci zanikla, takhle však byla
uchována.
Vážím si také toho, jak konvence stále
podporuje sbory v České Republice a na
Slovensku. Baptisté v těchto dvou státech
tvoří nevelké menšiny a práce je obtížná
a zdlouhavá. Povzbuzení i podporu konvence potřebují. Velmi jsem byl potěšen
zjištěním, že konvence zasahuje i jiné části
světa. Bůh nám umožnil vyrůst v jedné
kultuře, abychom mohli oslovit celý svět
při společném sdílení radostné zvěsti Ježíše
Krista, majíc přitom v úctě kulturu jiných
národů. Vidět konvenci ubírat se tímto
novým směrem je potěšením.
4. Co byste rád vzkázal čtenářům Slavné
naděje?
Děkuji vám za vaši lásku našeho Pána,
za vaše úsilí v horlivé službě, za ochotu si
připomínat hrdiny konvence, kteří riskovali všechno při odchodu do nové země
se svými rodinami a se svou vírou, za to,
že vidíte svět očima Ježíše a sdílite se se
svou kulturností, abychom i my ostatní
byli požehnáni bohatstvím českého a
slovenského světa. Mou touhou je, aby
se vaše vztahy s BWA rozšířily a aby jste v
budoucnosti přinášely tyto dary na shromáždení BWA. Budete požehnáni a také
budete požehnáním.

George had just
passed his 91st birthday
when the Lord called
him home. He passed
on Thursday, June 9,
2011, and on Sunday
afternoon, immediately
following the morning
service, a special service
was held for George. It
was not hard to decide
to have George’s funeral
on Sunday at the church, because until he moved to the
Corry Manor three weeks before his death, George was
always in his place at church. In the dictionary if you look
up the word faithful, you just may see George’s picture.
He was not just faithful to church but he surely was faithful to his Lord. He was also faithful to the convention,
serving 14 years as treasurer, putting countless hours into
this ministry he loved so much. Yes, if you knew George,
you would have to agree he loved God and was faithful to
Him. In the last couple of years he was not only faithful
but very excited about serving our Lord. He was getting
excited about meeting Jesus face to face. He definitely was
ready to go. He also was concerned with winning others
so they too would be ready to meet God.
George was born in Hatch Hollow, a small community
near Union City, Pennsylvania. His parents had a dairy
farm in the hollow, after leaving the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. George’s father, mother, uncles and aunts started
the Hatch Hollow Baptist Church after getting saved.
They needed to start a Czechoslovak church so they could
worship the Lord and win others. They had been meeting
in one another`s homes for several years, and when the

church building nearby became available, they officially
started the church, in 1928. George was saved in 1936
and served the Lord in Hatch Hollow all his life. He was
a faithful teacher, deacon and servant in the hollow. His
faithfulness was honored last year when our fellowship hall
was named “Gregor Hall.”
As the Bible tells us, George has passed from death unto
life. Yes, George is with his Lord, and his family that preceded him in death: his parents, brothers and sisters, and
his wife of 64 years, Alice. He is also enjoying his church
family and friends that went before him. Surely they are
still celebrating his arrival.
George left us (his church and friends) behind, missing
him but fully aware that soon we will join him in eternity.
He also left his two daughters, Patty Yost (husband Larry)
and Barbara Schultz (husband Bill) and their families. He
also left his friend and sister-in-law, Gena Packo.

Joy Solc, 53, of Raleigh NC, beloved wife, mother and
Nana, went home to be with her all-satisfying Savior on
August 4, 2011, at the
William Dunlap Hospice Center. A memorial
service and celebration of
Joy’s life was held on Saturday, August 13th, 2011,
at 11 a.m. in Binkley
Chapel on the campus
of Southeastern Baptist
Theological Seminary.
The following words of
remembrance were a part
of the memorial service:

Joy Solc was named Cheryl Joy Roeda when she was
born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on December 1, 1957. Her
father and mother, Jack and Rachel Roeda, always loved
and cherished Joy for who she was. She had a winsome
personality, and while bashful, a sweet and engaging disposition. She had curly blonde hair and lovely green eyes, and
people found her charming. Her smile won many hearts.
Joy and her siblings opened up many doors of ministry
for her parents. A Christ-centered family is an excellent
way to share a Christian witness, and Joy’s personality and
gifts were a blessing. As a teenager, Joy learned to play the
guitar, a much-loved instrument in Latin America. She
had a lovely singing voice, and used it in the work of the
Lord. She liked to sing and play for both youth events and
small groups. During these teen years in Mexico City, her
life was greatly enriched by a youth group led by a pastor
with a heart for missionaries’ kids. This group provided
Christian fellowship, times of great fun, and even a bit of
romance. This was followed by a challenging time spent
at a boarding school in Asheville and then a public high
school in Greenville. All these experiences played a role in
shaping Joy as a person and as a Christian.
The most exhilarating experience of Joy’s life was meeting Josef Solc. It’s amazing how God can bring two people
together from two different ends of the globe. Joy was born
in Montevideo, Uruguay, in South America. Josef was
born in Prague, the Czech Republic, in Eastern Europe:
from Uruguay and the Czech Republic, all the way to Fort
Worth, Texas. They met while Josef was working on his
PhD and Joy was studying to be a nurse. One night, Josef
took a break from his dissertation to have a meal with
friends, cooked by Joy, and the meal was so good that
he decided to pursue the gorgeous girl with long, blonde
hair. Josef impressed her by telling her he played professional ice hockey. Then he asked her out on a date to go
ice skating and she said, yes. They quickly fell in love and
a few months later, Josef asked Joy to marry him and she
again said, yes. After a beautiful wedding in November of
1978, the two set out on the beginning of many exciting
adventures.
They immediately began ministry together when Josef
accepted apposition as interim pastor job in Toronto. But
after a few months, he took Joy out of the freezing temperatures of Canada to the idyllic weather of Monaco, Monte
Carlo, for a job with a Christian radio station. Talk about
a year-long honeymoon! But God had more good things in
store for them as they ventured back to Fort Worth, Texas.
Josef began pastoring a church, Hulen Street Baptist, that
had only 44 members. Six years later, with Joy by Josef ’s
side, God had grown the church to over 500 members.

Joy made an amazing pastor’s wife—and that job is not
for just anyone. She had the gift of hospitality and used it
to minister to her family, to fellow believers, and to those
who did not know the Lord. She had a real servant’s heart
and it showed through her hospitality, children’s ministry,
and a real love for Jesus. But her most treasured role in life
was motherhood, and everyone who knew Joy, knew that.
She and Josef were blessed with three beautiful children: Joy,
Maria, and Josef Jr. She cherished every moment that she
had with them, from the moment they were born until her
last moment on earth. She took such pleasure in every little
bit of her kids as babies, that Josef does not even remember
changing many, if any, diapers, because Joy gladly did it, no
complaints. She invested her whole life into building a closeknit family, and considered it her greatest accomplishment.
Joy was passionate, outgoing, and loved to talk. She
always had words of wisdom, the latest statistics from
Reader’s Digest, or a scripture to share in conversation.
Joy had a love for music, cooking, travelling, and sharing
the gospel with others. These things have helped mold and
shape the interests of her children today. She had such a
great personality which will surely be missed.
Her smile, which could light up any room, lit up even her
hospital room at Duke. The nurses called her Miss Sunshine.
Even in this time of intense grief, Joy was true to her name
and brought joy to her family with her smile. One of the
biggest smiles she ever smiled was in response to a reminder
that very soon she was going to have two more precious
little grandbabies. She loved being Nana to her grandson
Camden; and she spent a great deal of time playing with
him and teaching him things, especially things about Jesus.
Joy was a gift from God: to her parents, to her siblings,
to her husband Josef, to her children and their spouses, and
to her grandchildren. She was deeply loved; and she will be
profoundly missed. But we are comforted in knowing that
she is safely in the arms of Jesus. We believe that because of
God’s love for us in Christ, we will meet again, when our
gracious God makes all things new.
Joy is survived by her husband, Josef Solc, of Raleigh;
daughters, Joy Denney and husband Seth of Raleigh and
Maria Diering and husband Nathan of Raleigh; son, Josef
Solc and wife Chelsea of Raleigh; grandson, Camden Denney; granddaughter, Sadie Joy Diering; sister, Marie Whatley
of Raleigh; brothers, Dan Roeda of Wisconsin, Steve Roeda
of Utah and Drew Roeda of Colorado; her parents, Jack
and Rachel Roeda of Raleigh.

semináře. V průběhu vzpomínkového shromáždění
zazněla tato slova:
Joy Šolcová se narodila v Montevideu, v Uruguayi,
1. prosince 1957 a pojmenovali ji Cheryl Joy Roeda. Její
rodiče Jack a Rachel Roedovi láskyplně o Joy pečovali a
vždy ji milovali takovou, jaká byla. Měla okouzlující osobnost, poněkud ostýchavou, milou a příjemnou povahu.
Její blonďaté kudrnaté vlasy a krásné zelené oči ji činily
půvabnou. Úsměvem si získala mnohá srdce.
Joy se svými sourozenci otvírala dveře srdcí bližních,
kterým jejich rodiče sloužili. Rodina, ve které je Kristus
středem, je tím nejlepším svědectvím, a osobnost Joy a její
obdarování byly požehnáním. Již jako děvče se Joy naučila
hrát na kytaru, oblíbený nástroj v Latinské Americe. Měla
krásný hlas a také jím sloužila Pánu. Ráda zpívala a hrála
v mládeži i ve skupinkách. Během dospívání v Mexicu
City byl její život velice obohacen mládežnickou skupinou, vedenou kazatelem, který cítil s dětmi misionářů.
Tato skupina poskytovala křesťanské obecenství, zábavu
a dokonce i trochu romantiky. Poté následovalo náročné
období na internátě v Asheville a potom státní střední
škola v Greenville. Všechny tyto zkušenosti sehrály roli
při formování Joy jako člověka a jako křesťanky.
Nejradostnější událostí v životě Joy bylo setkání s Josefem Šolcem. Je to úžasné, jak může Bůh spojit dva lidi z
různých částí zeměkoule. Joy se narodila v Montevideu,
v Uruguayi, v Jižní Americe. Josef se narodil v Praze, v
České republice, ve východní Evropě. Pomyslná čára se
táhla z Uruguaye a z České republiky až do Forth Worthu,
v Texasu. Seznámili se v době, kdy Josef pracoval na svém
doktorátě a Joy studovala zdravotnictví. Jednou večer Josef
přerušil diplomovou práci a šel na večeři s přáteli, kterou
vařila Joy. Jídlo bylo tak výborné, že se začal o nádherné
děvče s dlouhými blonďatými vlasy zajímat. Josef ji řekl,

že hrál profesionálně lední hokej, a tím na ni zapůsobil.
A pak ji pozval zabruslit si a ona řekla ano. Okamžitě se
do sebe zamilovali a o několik měsíců později požádal
Josef Joy o ruku a ona opět řekla ano. Po krásné svatbě v
listopadě 1978 následovalo mnoho zajímavých zážitků.
Hned nastoupili společně do služby v Torontě, kde
Josef dočasně přijal místo kazatele. Ale již po několika
měsících odvezl Joy z mrazivé Kanady do idylického
podnebí Monaka, do Monte Carla, kde pracoval v křesťanském rozhlase. Tomu se říká svatební cesta — trvala rok!
Když se vrátili do Fort Worthu, do Texasu, měl Bůh
pro ně připravenou další práci.
Josef začal pracovat (s Joy po boku) ve sboru Hulen
Street Baptist, kde bylo jenom 44 členů. Bůh se k práci
přiznal. Za šest let měl sbor přes 500 členů.
Joy byla v roli manželky kazatele úžasná — není to
práce pro každého. Měla dar pohostinnosti a používala
ho ve službě spoluvěřícím, v rodině a pro ty, kteří Pána
ještě nepoznali. Měla srdce skutečného služebníka,
které se projevovalo při pohostinnosti, v práci s dětmi a
opravdovou láskou k Pánu Ježíši. Tou nejcennější rolí v
jejím životě však bylo mateřství, a to ví každý, kdo Joy
znal. Bylo jí a Josefovi požehnáno třemi krásnými dětmi:
Joy, Marií a Josefem ml. Vážila si každé chvíle s nimi, od
jejich narození až do poslední chvíle na této zemi. Těšila
se z každé maličkosti kolem svých miminek, Josef si ani
nepamatuje, že by někdy přebaloval, protože to dělala Joy
s radostí, bez stížností. Celý svůj život zasvětila budování
úzce spjaté rodiny a považovala to za svůj největší úspěch.
Joy byla vřelá, vstřícná, hovorná. Vždy uměla poradit,
během konverzace se podělit s nejnovějšími statistikami
z Reader’s Digestu nebo s biblickým veršem. Joy milovala
hudbu, ráda vařila, cestovala a sdílela evangelium s jinými.
To pomáhalo formovat a usměrňovat zájmy jejích dětí až
dodnes. Jistě bude její vzácná osobnost postrádána.
Svým úsměvem, který by mohl rozzářit každou
místnost, rozzářil i nemocniční pokoj. Sestřičky jí říkali
Sluníčko. I v tom nejtěžším zármutku se Joy nezměnila a
potěšovala rodinu svým úsměvem. Snad největší úsměv
na její tváři přinesla zmínka o tom, že velmi brzy bude
mít o dvě drahocenná vnoučátka víc. Velmi se ji líbilo být
babičkou, vnukovi Camdenovi se hodně věnovala, hrála
si s ním a učila ho, zvlástě o Pánu Ježíši.
Svým rodičům, sourozencům, manželovi Josefovi,
svým dětem a jejich partnerům a svým vnoučatům byla Joy
darem od Boha. Byla hluboce milována a bude nesmírně
postrádána. Útěchou nám je vědomí toho, že je bezpečně
v náruči Pána Ježíše. Věříme tomu, že díky Boží lásce
zjevené nám v Kristu se opět setkáme, až náš laskvý Bůh
učiní všechno nové.

passing into his glorious eternal home on
February 28, 2011. His
wife Mary and sons Paul
and Samuel, along with
their families, other family members and many
friends, gathered together at Queensway Baptist Church,
Toronto, Ontario, on March 4th for a celebration service
of the life of George and his faithfulness to his living
Lord right up to his final days. George was born to
parents George and Elizabeth Fabok and grew up with
his sisters Anne and Mary in various parts of Southern
Ontario, settling in Toronto for the duration of his life.
He was born in Silbac, Yugoslavia, and came to Canada
with his mother and sisters to join their father when he
was almost nine years old. Growing up in Toronto, he
and his family were part of the Maria Street Mission, and
he was married to Mary (Korcok) in that same church in
1959. George worked the majority of his adult life right
up to his retirement at de Havilland Aircraft, now Bombardier. Serving the Lord was his desire, whether in his
own home, everyday workplace or his church. His love for
Jesus continues on through his wife Mary, son Paul with
wife Jane and children Sarah and Joel, and son Samuel
with wife Christine and children Jonathan, Timothy and
Stephanie. Thank you so much for your prayers for us at
this time. God bless you.

Harry and Esther Tarr’s 50th Wedding Anniversary
H
arry and Esther Tarr celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary in October of 2010, hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for family and friends at the Rideau
Glen Golf Course in Kemptville, Ontario.
With children Beth, Stephen and Laura and their families,
as well as our many friends and extended family, we enjoyed
an evening filled with laughter, memories shared and of
course a lovely Thanksgiving dinner served up by the chef. .
Grandchildren Courtney, Devin, Tyler, Joseph, Charles,
Amber and Ashley put on a skit depicting Harry and Esther
on their date at the Baptist Home Mission Cottages in Muskoka—what fun.
Courtney sang love songs that were beautiful. Bob Weaver
played Amazing Grace as well as other pieces on his trumpet.
Much to be thankful for… God has certainly blessed us
with precious family and good friends. The years have flown
by—and the adventure continues!

My name is Margery Elasky. I married a
young man from Dad‘s
church, Immanuel Baptist Church. Dad was
pastor of Immanuel
when I was in junior and
senior high. My father is
Rev. Michael Evan. Dad
died in 1998. My mother,
Margery Evan, is ninety-seven years old. Mom is still a
prayer warrior. Mom and dad were a team.
I enjoyed the previous issue of Glorious Hope, celebrating 100 years. I enjoyed reading not only about the
convention but also about the part Dad played in it. Dad
was instrumental in supporting the convention. There is
a picture on page 25 labeled “Rev. Michael Evan.” The
problem is that it is not my dad. It is a picture of my
uncle, Dan Evan. Both good-looking men.
Dad was loved by his congregations, both Slovakand English-speaking. At several of his churches he had
both Slovak and English services. Dad was asked many
times to perform worship services, funerals and other
activities in Slovak. He always accepted graciously.
However, what impressed me the most was Dad‘s deep
love for and faith in Jesus Christ. He wanted to share
that love and the way of salvation with his people, Slovak and English. He wanted to share that message with
any person he came in contact with, Slovak and English. Dad was a humble leader, a shepherd with a pastor‘s heart. He would take a church that had a problem.
Then he would mentor the people and bring healing to
his congregation. Dad always allowed the Holy Spirit to
work through him. His congregation was encouraged to
use their gifts from the Holy Spirit. Dad‘s churches grew
because he gave the glory to God.
I could go on and on, but Dad would say, „Marge, it
was not me; it was God working through me. Give the
glory to whom it belongs.“
„Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God in all my
remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy
in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. For I
am confident of this very thing, that He who began a
good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ
Jesus,“ (Philippians 1:2–6).

Anniversary Edition
Thank you so much for the wonderful issue you produced. My grandfather (Vaclav Shuldes) was active in
the convention from 1909 to 1942 when he died. He was
a close friend of Edward Catlos. Henry Boubelik was
pastor of our church for a short time after my grandfather‘s death. I certainly received a great grounding in our
Lord’s second coming from him. My brother and I had
a fun time with our magnifying glasses looking for our
relatives and friends. We found five photos of our grandfather, several of Henry Boubelik and Edward Catlos,
and my grandmother, great aunt and a close friend in
the 1940–41 picture of the women officers. For us the
magazine brought much pleasure and a marvelous
reminder of our Christian heritage. Thank you, thank
you, thank you. God bless you.
