The fourth Summer School on Energy Security attracted students from
all over the world
On August 2 – 9 the Masaryk University Center in Telč hosted the fourth summer school on
energy security organized by the Department of International Relations and European
Studies, Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University along with the International Institute of
Political Sciences of Masaryk University, German transmission system operator 50Hertz
GmbH and Czech energy company CEZ, a.s.
The summer school hosted 25 students of 14 different nationalities from literally all around
the world. Among the participants there were students from Philippines, Argentina, United
States, Russia, Portugal and other countries. The students had the opportunity to attend
lectures and workshops of prominent experts in the field of energy policy and security and
also visit the Temelin Nuclear Power Plant. The program consisted of lectures of James
Henderson from the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (UK); Silvia Haufe from 50Hertz
(GER); Czech Government´s special envoy for energy security Václav Bartuška; Aleksandra Lis
from Adam Mickiewicz university in Poznan (PL); Václav Dostál from the Czech Technical
University; Alois Tost, German independent energy analyst and Filip Černoch, Tomáš Vlček
and Martin Jirušek from the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University.
The most praised part of the summer school was undoubtedly the visit to the Temelin
Nuclear Power Plant. Students visited a simulator of the reactor control room, engine room
of the production bloc and also attended lecture of Mr. Petr Závodský, director of the
Nuclear Power Plant Construction Department of the company CEZ, a.s., owner of the power
plant.
The whole summer school was highly appreciated for providing valuable information and
high level of discussions, as illustrated a feedback provided by one of the participants: “I was
very happy with the quality of information provided. Some experts offered a unique insight
which you cannot find in books and articles”.
