Vážení hosté, milí přátelé,
letošní jaro bude pro Grandhotel Pupp obzvlášť významné. Začínáme psát novou historii spojenou s lázeňstvím, jak se na hotel v Karlových Varech, největších českých lázních, sluší. Petr Veliký, Beethoven, Goethe,
Casanova, Freud, Masaryk a Havel - to je jen několik jmen z dlouhého zástupu šejků, mahárádžů, evropských
panovníků a dalších významných návštěvníků, kteří si zde užívali léčivé vody a bahenních zábalů. I Vy budete moci přímo v lázeňské části hotelu, v Pupp Royal Spa, využívat širokou škálu wellness procedur. Jak
možná víte, slovo „spa” je akronymem slov salus per aqua, což v latině znamená „dobré zdraví díky vodě”.
Jednou z velmi oblíbených procedur jsou peloidní obklady. Nelekejte se neznámého slova peloid. To je obecný název pro látky vzniklé v přírodě - rašelina, bahno, slatina. Termální voda proniká do půdy a předává
bahnu své léčivé vlastnosti. Na určená místa těla se pak přikládají peloidní obklady. Tato procedura se používá k léčbě chronických degenerativních onemocnění pohybového aparátu a zažívacího traktu. Má protibolestivý účinek a zlepšuje pohyblivost. Peloid se rozmíchá s minerální vodou, plní se do speciálních sáčků,
ohřeje se na 44-46 °C a jako obklad se aplikuje na 20-30 minut na postižená místa. Organizmus se nejen
prohřívá, ale přejímá z přírodních látek také minerální soli. Ještě 1-2 hodiny po proceduře se nedoporučuje mýt mýdlem, aby se nesnížil
účinek minerálních látek. Věřím, že všechny procedury v Pupp Royal Spa Vám budou tak příjemné jako tato. Přeji Vám nádherné jaro!

der diesjährige Frühling wird für das Grandhotel Pupp besonders wichtig. Man beginnt eine neue Geschichte, die mit dem Kurwesen
verbunden ist, wie es sich auf ein Hotel in Karlsbad, im größten Kurort Tschechiens, gehört. Peter der Große, Beethoven, Goethe,
Casanova, Freud, Masaryk und Havel - das sind nur einige Namen aus der langen Liste der Scheiche, Maharadschas, der europäischen
Herrscher und der bedeutenden Besucher, die hier das Heilwasser und den Schlamm genossen. Auch Sie werden direkt im Wellnessbereich,
im Pupp Royal Spa, ein breites Angebot an Wellness-Anwendungen probieren können. Wie Sie vielleicht wissen, ist das Wort „Spa” ein
Akronym der Wörter salus per aqua, was lateinisch „gute Gesundheit dank Wasser” bedeutet. Eine der sehr beliebten Anwendungen sind
die Peloidpackungen. Haben Sie keine Angst vor dem unbekannten Wort Peloid. Es ist eine allgemeine Bezeichnung für die Stoffe, die in
der Natur entstehen - der Torf, der Schlamm, das Moor. Das Thermalwasser dringt in den Boden ein und schenkt dem Schlamm seine
heilende Wirkung. An bestimmte Bereiche des Körpers werden die Peloidpackungen angelegt. Diese Anwendung wird zur Behandlung
der chronisch degenerativen Erkrankungen des Bewegungsapparates und des Verdauungstraktes verwendet. Sie hat eine schmerzstillende
Wirkung und verbessert die Beweglichkeit. Das Peloid wird mit dem Mineralwasser vermischt, wird in spezielle Tüten gefüllt, es wird auf
44-46 °C erwärmt und als eine Packung wird es 20 bis 30 Minuten auf die betroffenen Stellen angelegt. Der Organismus wird nicht nur
durchgewärmt, sondern er nimmt sich aus den Naturstoffen auch die Mineralsalze. Noch 1-2 Stunden nach der Anwendung wird nicht
empfohlen, sich mit Seife zu waschen, damit die Wirkung der Mineralstoffe nicht verringert wird. Ich hoffe, dass alle Anwendungen im

This spring will be especially important for the Grandhotel Pupp. We are starting to write a new chapter in the history which is connected
with balneology, as it is right and proper for a hotel in Karlovy Vary, the biggest of Czech spas. Peter the Great, Beethoven, Goethe,
Casanova, Freud, Masaryk and Havel are just some names of the long crowd of sheiks, maharajas, European rulers and prominent visitors
that enjoyed curative water and mud here in the past. You, too, will have an opportunity to make use of the wide range of spa treatments
directly in the spa part of the hotel, in the Pupp Royal Spa. As you might know, the word "spa" is an acronym for the words salus per aqua,
which means "good health through water" in Latin. Peloid packs are a very popular sort of treatment. Do not be afraid of the unknown
word peloid. It is a general term used for substances formed over many years in nature, such as peat, clay and mud. Thermal water gets
into the ground and lends its curative properties to mud. Peloid packs are then applied to certain parts of the body. This therapy is used
to treat chronic degenerative diseases of the locomotor system and the digestive tract. It relieves pain and improves mobility. Peloid is
mixed with mineral water, filled in special bags, heated up to 44-46 C and then it is applied to afflicted parts of the body for 20 or 30
minutes. The organism not only warms up, but it also takes over mineral salts from natural substances. Washing with soap is not recommended one or two hours after the therapy so that the effect of mineral substances may not be reduced. I do believe that all therapies in
the Pupp Royal Spa will be as pleasant for you as this one. I wish you a wonderful spring.

Významné ocenění
Držíte v ruce časopis, který byl v uplynulém
roce vyhodnocen jako jeden z nejlepších
zákaznických časopisů v České republice.
Porota složená z předních českých odborníků na marketing, reklamu, komunikaci
a grafiku vyhodnotila Pupp Journal jako
velmi kvalitně zpracovávaný časopis a udělila mu v žebříčku TOP 100 3. místo. Až na dalších místech zůstaly
časopisy ekonomických gigantů, jako je např. Siemens Group,
České dráhy či Telefónica CR.
Eine bedeutende Auszeichnung
Sie halten in der Hand eine Zeitschrift, die im vergangenen Jahr als
eine der besten Kundenzeitschriften in der Tschechischen Republik
bewertet wurde. Die Jury, in der die vordersten tschechischen
Fachleute im Bereich Marketing, Werbung, Kommunikation und
Grafik vertreten waren, bewertete den Pupp Journal als eine hoch­
wertig verarbeitete Zeitschrift und platzierte sie in der TOP 100
Rangliste auf den 3. Platz. Dahinter blieben die Zeitschriften der
Wirtschaftsgiganten wie z. B. Siemens Group, České dráhy (Tsche­
chische Bahn) oder Telefónica CR.
The 100,000th Passenger
The 100,000th passenger who went through the gates of the
International Airport Karlovy Vary in December 2012 was Mrs.
Tatiana Olechkina, who had taken a scheduled flight from Moscow.
Representatives of the Karlovy Vary region, of the regional section
of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants and of the airport took
part in the welcoming ceremony. She was also welcomed by the
representatives of the Grandhotel Pupp who presented the happy
tourist with a voucher for catering services. Altogether 103,682
passengers landed at the Karlovy Vary airport in the year 2012.
An Important Award
The magazine which you are holding in your hands was selected as
one of the best customer magazines of the last year in the Czech
Republic. A jury composed of leading Czech specialists in marketing,
advertising, communication and graphic art selected the Pupp Journal
as a perfectly processed quality magazine and placed it the third in the
TOP 100 list. Magazines of such economic giants as e.g. the Siemens
Group, Czech Railways or Telefónica CR were placed behind it.
Stotisící pasažér
Branami Mezinárodního letiště Karlovy Vary prošel v prosinci 2012
stotisící cestující roku. Stala se jím paní Tatiana Olechkina, která
přiletěla pravidelnou linkou z Moskvy. Uvítání se zúčastnili zástupci
karlovarského kraje, krajské sekce Asociace hotelů a restaurací a letiště. Uvítali ji i zástupci Grandhotelu Pupp, kteří šťastné cestovatelce věnovali voucher na gastronomické služby. Letiště Karlovy Vary
použilo pro svou cestu v roce 2012 celkem 103.682 cestujících.
Der hunderttausendste Fluggast
Durch die Tore des Internationalen Flughafens Karlsbad ging im
Dezember 2012 der hunderttausendste Fluggast des Jahres. Es war
Frau Tatiana Olechkina, die mit dem regelmäßigen Linienflug aus
Moskau ankam. An der Begrüßung nahmen die Vertreter des
Karlsbader Region, der Regionsabteilung der Hotel- und
Restaurantassoziation und des Flughafens teil. Es begrüßten sie
auch die Vertreter des Grandhotels Pupp, die der glücklichen
Reisenden einen Verpflegungsgutschein schenkten. Den Flughafen
Karlsbad nutzten im Jahre 2012 insgesamt 103.682 Reisende.

Zlatá neděle
O poslední adventní neděli 23.12. se pod vánočním stromem, pokřtěném po zakladateli hotelu „Johann“, zrodila tradice vánočního
bazaru. Výtěžek z celého vánočního prodeje ve výši 18.218,-Kč byl
věnován na vybavení dětského oddělení karlovarské nemocnice.
Proběhlo také vyhlášení vítězů soutěže o nejhezčí výtvarné pojetí
vánočního Grandhotelu Pupp. Hlavní cenu v podobě pozvání na
společný oběd v Grandhotelu Pupp si odnesla třída 2.A ze základní
školy v Tuhnicích, která vytvořila pod vedením paní učitelky
Pivkové originální zimní koláž.

Goldener Sonntag
Am letzten Adventsonntag, den 23.12. entstand unter dem
Weihnachtsbaum, der nach dem Hotelgründer „Johann“ benannt
wurde, die Tradition eines Weihnachtsbasars. Der Erlös in der
Höhe von 18.218,- Kč wurde auf die Ausstattung der Kinderabteilung
in der Karlsbader Klinik gespendet. Es wurden auch die Gewinner
des Wettbewerbs um das schönste Bild vom weihnachtlichen
Grandhotel Pupp bekannt gegeben. Den Hauptpreis, eine Einladung
zu einem gemeinsamen Mittagessen im Grandhotel Pupp gewann
die Klasse 2.A der Grundschule in Tuhnice, die eine originelle
Wintercollage gestaltete.
Skiers in the Town Centre
This year too, the Grandhotel Pupp was an important partner of the
Christmas cross-country-skiing competition Carlsbad Ski Sprint.
The winners of the main race were German cross-country-skiers
Oliver Wünsch and Daniel Heun. The Karlovy Vary public had had
an opportunity to ski on the route of the competition, T.G. Masaryka
Street, a day before.
The Gold Sunday
The tradition of a Christmas jumble sale was born under the
Christmas tree named “Johann” after the founder of the hotel on
the last Advent Sunday, the 23rd December. The money - 18,218
crowns went to the children´s department of the Karlovy Vary
hospital. There were also announced the names of the winners of
the competition for the nicest artistic design of the Christmas
Grandhotel Pupp. The main prize, which had a form of an invita­
tion to a common lunch in the Grandhotel Pupp, went to 2.A class
from the primary school in Tuhnice which had created an original
winter collage.
Lyžaři v centru města
Grandhotel Pupp byl i letos významným partnerem vánočních lyžařských závodů v běhu na lyžích Carlsbad Ski Sprint. V hlavním
závodě zvítězila dvojice německých běžců Oliver Wünsch a Daniel
Heun. Den před tím mohla na trase závodu, na třídě T.G. Masaryka,
lyžovat i karlovarská veřejnost.
Die Skiläufer im Stadtzentrum
Das Grandhotel Pupp war auch in diesem Jahr ein bedeutender
Partner des Carlsbad Ski Sprints, eines Langlaufwettbewerbs, der in
der Stadt traditionell zu Weihnachten stattfindet. Im Haupt­wettkampf
gewann das Team der deutschen Langläufer Oliver Wünsch und
Daniel Heun. Einen Tag zuvor konnte auf der Renns­trecke, auf der T.
G. Masaryk Straße, auch die Karlsbader Öffent­lichkeit Ski laufen.

Robin Hood v Grandhotelu Pupp
Bál Festival již v zimě připomněl, že 28.6.-6.7. 2013 bude město
Karlovy Vary dějištěm Mezinárodního filmového festivalu. Ples ve
všech prostorách Grandhotelu Pupp byl letos věnován filmům o středověkém zbojníkovi, který se pokusil naplnit pojmy čest, právo
a spravedlnost. Na filmovém plátně nebo v televizi se Robin Hood
objevil už přibližně třicetkrát. Ten „opravdový” navštívil letos
i Karlovy Vary. Slavnostní sál Grandhotelu Pupp se proměnil v tajemný Sherwoodský les a hosté spolu s Robinem z Locksley a krásnou
lady Mariannou prožili dobrodružný večer plný vášně, lásky a soubojů. Nechyběly puppovské gastronomické speciality a bohatá tombola.

Der Ball Festival erinnerte bereits im Winter, dass die Stadt Karlsbad
vom 28.6. bis zum 6.7. 2013 der Schauplatz des Inter­nationalen
Filmfestivals wird. Der Ball fand in allen Räumlichkeiten des
Grandhotels Pupp statt. Das Thema waren die Filme über den mittelalterlichen Räuber, der es versuchte, die Begriffe Ehre, Recht und
Gerechtigkeit zu erfüllen. Auf der Filmleinwand oder im Fernsehen
erschien Robin Hood bereits ungefähr dreißig Mal. Der „wahre”
besuchte dieses Jahr auch Karlsbad. Der Festsaal vom Grandhotel
Pupp verwandelte sich in den geheimnisvollen Sherwood und die
Gäste erlebten gemeinsam mit Robin von Locksley und der schönen
Lady Mariann einen abenteuerlichen Abend voller Leidenschaft,
Liebe und Duelle. Es durften die gastronomischen Pupp-Spe­ziali­
täten und eine reiche Tombola nicht fehlen.
Robin Hood in the Grandhotel Pupp
The Festival Ball reminded us already in winter, that the town of
Karlovy Vary would be the scene of the International Film Festival
Events
from 28th June to 6th July 2013. This year´s ball, which took place
in all the rooms of the Grandhotel Pupp, was dedicated to films
about the medieval outlaw who had fight for honour, law and justice. Robin Hood has already appeared on the film or TV screen approximately thirty times. The ”real” one visited also Karlovy Vary
this year. The Festive Hall in the Grandhotel Pupp changed into
mysterious Sherwood Forest and visitors together with Robin of
Locksley and beautiful Lady Mariann spent an adventurous evening
full of passion, love and duels. A wide offer of Puppian gastronomic
specialties and tombola were included in the programme.
Rotary klub
Zástupci karlovarského Rotary klubu a primátor Petr Kulhánek
podepsali darovací smlouvu na reliéfy umístěné na Beethovenově
pomníku. Rotary klub se zasloužil o to, že na monument byly umístěny chybějící umělecké výtvory. Jejich autorem je Heřman Kouba.

schůzkám tomuto prestižnímu karlovarskému
Rotary klubu. Pravidelné meetingy přátel se konají v pondělí v 19 hod. v Beethovenově salonku.
Členové jiných Rotary klubů jsou vítáni.

Die Vertreter des Karlsbader Rotary Klubs und der Ober­bürger­meister
Petr Kulhánek unterschrieben einen Schenkungsvertrag auf die Reliefs,
die es am Beethovendenkmal gibt. Der Rotary Klub erwarb sich Ver­
dienste darum, dass am Monument die fehlenden Kunstwerke befestigt
wurden. Das Grandhotel Pupp bietet seine Räumlichkeiten den Treffen
des namenhaften Karlsbader Rotary Klubs. Regelmäßige Meetings von
Freunden finden am Montag um 19 Uhr im Beethoven Salon statt.
Mitglieder der ausländischen Rotary Klubs sind willkommen.
Rotary Club
The representatives of the Karlovy Vary Rotary Club and Mayor Petr
Kulhánek signed a contract of gift concerning the reliefs on the
Monument to Beethoven. The Rotary Club was instrumental in put-

ting the missing works of art on the monument. The Grandhotel Pupp
provides its rooms to the prestigious Rotary Club whose members
meet there. Regular meetings of friends take place in Lounge Beethoven
every Monday at 7 p.m. Members of foreign Rotary clubs are welcome.
Grand Restaurant
Festival 2013
Téměř čtyři sta návštěvníků hostil Grandrestaurant Pupp během letošní akce Grand Restaurant Festival. Tříchodové menu v sestavě mistrovského předkrmu šéfkuchaře, tradiční speciality a nejlepšího dezertu jako od maminky doprovodila pečlivě vybraná vína z hotelové vinotéky. Na další gastronomický festival nemusíte čekat dlouho. Již
v sobotu 4. května se před hotelem Thermal představí nejlepší regionální gastronomické provozy v rámci Food Festivalu Karlovy Vary.

Während der diesjährigen Veranstaltung Grand Restaurant Festival
verpflegte das Grandrestaurant Pupp fast vierhundert Besucher. Zu
dem Drei-Gänge-Menü, zusammengestellt aus einer meisterhaften
Vorspeise des Chefkochs, einer traditionellen Spezialität und dem
besten Dessert wie von Mama, servierte man sorgfältig ausgesuchte
Weinsorten aus der Hotelweintheke. Auf ein weiteres gastronomi­
sches Festival müssen Sie nicht lange warten. Bereits am Samstag,
den 4. Mai, stellen sich die besten regionalen gastronomischen
Betriebe am Food Festival Karlsbad vor dem Hotel Thermal vor.
Grand Restaurant Festival 2013
The Grandrestaurant Pupp played host to almost four hundred
­visitors during this year´s event Grand Restaurant Festival. A threecourse menu consisting of a master starter by the chef, traditional
specialities and the best dessert by the mother were complemented
by carefully chosen wines from the hotel wine restaurant. You do
not have to wait long for another gastronomic festival. The best
regional gastronomic facilities will present themselves outside the
Thermal Hotel on the 4th May.

Das Balneologische Institut
In Karlsbad wurde der Balneologische Institut gegründet. Seine
Aufgabe ist die Referenzdaten zu sammeln und zu verarbeiten, mit
dem Ziel die wohltuende Wirkung der Badekur auf die Gesundheit
zu beweisen, Bildungsprogramme zu gestalten und in der Zukunft
an eigenen Projekten zu arbeiten. An der Tätigkeit des Balneologischen
Instituts werden auch die Karlsbader Kursanatorien teilnehmen,
damit die Öffentlichkeit sowie die Fachleute möglichst viele objektive Informationen über die Badekur zur Verfügung haben.

NOVINÁŘKOU
Anna Fidlerová je doyen karlovarských novinářů. Ve svých více jak
devadesáti letech vyniká jasným názorem, kultivovanými články
a hlubokou znalostí problematiky, o které píše. K jejím oblíbeným
tématům patří divadlo, film, výtvarné umění, historie i současný ži­
vot a osudy osobností spjatých s Karlovarskem. V Karlových Varech
žije od roku 1955.
Až do roku 1969 pracovala jako novinářka. V letech normalizace ne­
směla svou profesi vykonávat a živila se jako uklízečka a technická
písařka. Po roce 1989 se ke své novinářské práci vrátila. Je autorkou
regionálních publikací "Tajemství třináctého pramene" o historii výro­
by Becherovky a "Údolí živé vody", kde přibližuje historii města a láz­
ní Jáchymov. V roce 1998 obdržela za novinářskou činnost a občanské
postoje Cenu města Karlovy Vary. V současné době publikuje v časo­
pise Promenáda a v deníku Mladá fronta DNES. Je příkladem odpo­
vědného a poctivého novináře, dokáže pravdivě dokumentovat atmo­
sféru událostí a odhalovat to nepostižitelné a magické v životě...

sál a útulné salónky, v nichž se konají nejrůznější kulturní programy, konference a setkání. Pro mne je to od začátku padesátých let
„hotel plný filmů“. Zažila jsem tu všechny filmové festivaly až do
roku 1978, kdy byl pro tyto účely postaven hotel Thermal. Ještě
dnes tu má festival své zázemí. Bydlí zde významní hosté a promítají se tu filmy. Film prostě z hotelu neodešel a nikdy neodejde.
Jak se vám žije v Karlových Varech?
V Karlových Varech se mi žije dobře. Do tohoto města jsem se
dobrovolně přistěhovala v roce 1955 a nikdy jsem toho nelitovala.
A to přesto, že jsem tu zažila chvíle velké radosti, ale i smutku.
Karlovy Vary mají velkou magickou moc navracet lidem zdraví.
A těm, kteří zde žijí, pomáhají pochopit mnohé z tajemství bohaté
historie i přírodních krás, které je obklopují.

Co byste vzkázala našim čtenářům?
Tyto řádky jsou určeny především hotelovým hostům, ale předpokládám, že je čtou i zaměstnanci hotelu. Ti všichni, kteří se tu potkávají, by neměli ani na okamžik zapomenout, jaká je to čest zde
bydlet a pracovat. Měli by si denně s úctou připomínat, kdo všechno hotel založil a během staletí přispíval k jeho rozkvětu. A že
chodit po stopách všech těch významných lidí, kteří tu bydleli,
koncertovali, radovali se i trápili, je vlastně výsada.
Máte ve městě své oblíbené místo?
Jsou hned tři. Za prvé zajímavá architektura parku u hotelu
Imperial, kde se dá po většině roku vychutnat zvláštní ticho a tušená vznešenost celého areálu. Za druhé je to Beethovenův salónek
v Grandhotelu Pupp, kde se každoročně těším na vzrušenou atmosféru tiskových konferencí Mezinárodního filmového festivalu
a během celého roku na pondělní setkávání s přáteli karlovarského
Rotary klubu. A konečně je to skála Parnas ve stráni nad Galerií
umění s nádhernou básní francouzského emigranta barona
A.du Faye z roku 1798, opěvující Vřídlo a přírodu Karlových Varů,
ale také vyjadřující smutek a touhu po vlasti.
Anna Fidlerová ist die Doyenne der Karlsbader Journalisten. In ihren
mehr als neunzig Jahren hat sie klare Meinungen, sie schreibt kulti­
vierte Artikel und kennt gründlich das Thema, über das sie schreibt.
In Karlsbad lebt sie seit dem Jahre 1955.
Bis 1969 arbeitete sie als Journalistin. In den Jahren der Normalisierung
durfte sie Ihren Beruf nicht ausüben und arbeitete als Putzfrau und
technische Schreibkraft. Nach dem Jahre 1989 kehrte sie zu ihrem
Journalistenberuf. Sie ist Autorin der regionalen Herausgaben „Tajemství
třináctého pramene” über die Geschichte der Herstellung von Becherovka
und „Údolí živé vody”, wo sie die Geschichte der Stadt und des Bades
St. Joachimsthal (Jáchymov) schildert. Im Jahre 1998 erhielt sie für ihre
journalistische Tätigkeit und bürgerliches Verhalten den Preis der
Stadt Karlsbad. Zurzeit schreibt sie in die Zeitschrift Promenáda und in
die Tageszeitung Mladá fronta DNES. Sie ist das Beispiel einer ver­
antwortungsvollen und ehrlichen Journalistin, ihr gelingt es, wahrhaftig
die Atmosphäre der Ereignisse zu dokumentieren und das Unwahr­
nehmbare und das Magische im Leben aufzudecken ...

In Karlsbad lebt es sich mir gut. In diese Stadt zog ich im Jahre 1955

freiwillig um und ich habe es nie bereut, obwohl ich hier glückliche
sowie traurige Momente erlebte. Karlsbad hat eine bedeutende magische Kraft den Leuten die Gesundheit zurückzugeben. Und denen, die hier leben, hilft es viele Geheimnisse der reichen Geschichte
und der Naturschönheiten, die es umgeben, zu begreifen.
Haben Sie in der Stadt Ihren Lieblingsort?
Es sind gleich drei. Erstens die merkwürdige Parkarchitektur am
Hotel Imperial, wo man das meiste Jahr über eine seltsame Ruhe
und die geahnte Noblesse des gesamten Geländes auskosten kann.
Zweitens ist es der Beethovensalon im Grandhotel Pupp, wo ich
mich alljährlich auf die aufgeregte Atmosphäre der Presse­kon­
ferenzen des Internationalen Filmfestivals und das ganze Jahr über
auf die Montagstreffen mit den Freunden des Karlsbader Rotary
Klubs freue. Und schließlich ist es der Parnass Felsen im Hang über
der Kunstgalerie mit dem wunderschönen Gedicht des französischen Emigranten, des Barons A. du Faye aus dem Jahre 1798, das
den Sprudel und die Natur von Karlsbad preist, das jedoch auch
Trauer und Sehnsucht nach der Heimat ausdrückt.
Welche Beziehung haben Sie zum Grandhotel Pupp?
Obwohl das Hotel zum Aufenthalt von Gästen bestimmt ist, ist es
auch ein Ort, dessen zahlreiche Räume auch den Einwohnern der
Stadt dienen. Es gibt hier den einmaligen Festsaal und die gemütlichen Salons, in denen verschiedene Kulturprogramme, Konferenzen
und Treffen stattfinden. Für mich ist es von Anfang der fünfziger
Jahre „ein Hotel voller Filme“. Ich erlebte hier alle Filmfestivals bis
1978, als man zu diesem Zweck das Hotel Thermal baute. Noch
heute hat hier das Festival seinen Rückhalt. Es wohnen hier die
bedeutendsten Gäste und man zeigt hier die Filme. Der Film ging
einfach aus dem Hotel nicht weg und wird niemals gehen.
Was würden Sie unseren Lesern ausrichten?
Diese Zeilen sind vor allem für die Hotelgäste bestimmt, aber ich
vermute, dass sie auch die Hotelangestellten lesen. Die alle, die sich
hier begegnen, sollten keinen Augenblick vergessen, welche Ehre es
ist, hier zu wohnen und zu arbeiten. Sie sollten sich jeden Tag mit
Respekt daran erinnern, wer das Hotel gründete und wer während
der Jahrhunderte zu seinem Aufschwung beitrug. Und dass es eigent­
lich ein Privileg ist, in den Stapfen der vielen bedeutenden
Persönlichkeiten, die hier wohnten, konzertierten, sich freuten und
sich kränkten, zu gehen.

WITH AN ADMIRABLE JOURNALIST
Anna Fidlerová is a doyen of Karlovy Vary journalists. Though she
is more than ninety years old, her articles are sophisticated with ob­
jective opinions and deep knowledge o the problems she writes about.
She has been living in Karlovy Vary since the year 1955. She worked
as a journalist until 1969. She was not allowed to practise her pro­
fession in normalization years and made her living as a cleaning
woman and typist. She returned to her occupation as an external
co-operator with the local media after the year 1989. She is the au­

thor of regional publications ”The Mystery of the Thirteenth Spring“
about the history of the Becherovka liqueur production and ”The
Valley of the Elixir of Life“ where she makes readers acquainted with
the history o the town and spa of Jáchymov. She was awarded the
Prize of the Town of Karlovy Vary for her journalism activities and
civil stances in 1998. At present she writes for the magazine
Promenáda and the daily Mladá fronta DNES. She is an example of
a responsible and honest journalist who describes the atmosphere of
events in accordance with the truth and reveals the imperceptible
and magical moments in life...
How do you like living in Karlovy Vary?
I do like living in Karlovy Vary. I moved into this town voluntarily
in 1955 and I have never regretted it although I have experienced
both very happy and very sad times here. Karlovy Vary has the
power to restore people´s health. And it helps those living here to
get to understand many a mystery from the eventful history and the
beauties of nature surrounding them.
Do you have your favourite place in the town?
They are even three of them. It is first of all the special architecture of the Imperial Hotel, where you can enjoy special silence and
the grandeur of the all grounds for almost the whole year. Then it
is Beethoven Lounge in the Grandhotel Pupp where I look forward to the excited atmosphere of press conferences of the
International Film Festival every year and Monday meetings of
the friends from the Karlovy Vary Rotary Club during the whole
year. And, finally, it is the rock Parnas on the hillside above the
Art Gallery with a beautiful poem by the French immigrant Baron
A. du Fay dating from 1798. It glorifies the Sprudel and the nature of Karlovy Vary, but it also expresses sadness and desire for
a native land.
What relationship do you have to the Grandhotel Pupp?
Though the hotel is aimed at stays of guests, it is also a place whose
numerous rooms are here for the inhabitants of the town. There are
the unique Festive Hall and cosy lounges where various cultural
programmes, conferences and meetings are held. It has been
”a hotel full of films“ for me since the early 1950s. I experienced all
film festivals up to 1978 here, when the Hotel Thermal was built for
this purpose. The Pupp provides support to the film festival even
today. Prominent visitors stay here and films are shown here. Film
has never left the hotel and it never will.
What message would you like to send to our readers?
These lines are aimed first of all at hotel guests but I suppose that
the hotel staff read them too. All those people who meet here
should not forget even for a single moment that staying and working here is an honour. They should remember with respect all
those who founded the hotel and have contributed to its boom for
centuries. And that walking in the footsteps of all those prominent
personalities that lived, gave concerts, and were happy or worried
here is actually a privilege.

Historie Grandhotelu Pupp začíná
jako pohádkový příběh o chudém
chlapci, jenž se výhodným sňatkem se zámožnou nevěstou stal
boháčem. Příběh Puppu je
však pravdivý. Podívejme
se do mlžného zrcadla času...
V roce 1767 přišel z Veltrus
u Kralup nad Vltavou do
Karlových Varů za prací mladý muž (*1743), jenž se jmenoval Johann Georg Pupp.
Jeden čas byl Pupp cukrářem
u hraběte Chotka na jeho zámku
ve Veltrusech, kde se patrně vyučil.
Někde se píše, že Pupp přijel do
Karlových Varů s hrabětem Chotkem
poprvé již v roce 1759. Upřesněme, že
Puppovo původní jméno bylo Popp či Pop,
až v Karlových Varech se cukrář začal někdy po roce
1775 psát Pupp. Motivy této drobné úpravy jména neznáme.
Zaměstnání si mladý Pupp našel u váženého karlovarského cukráře
a kavárníka (coffetiéra) Mitterbachera v jeho domě Zelený meloun
na Staré louce čp. 332. U Mitterbacherů Pupp našel nejen práci, ale
i svou milovanou ženu. V roce 1775 si Johann Georg Pupp vzal za
manželku Mitterbacherovu jedinou dceru Franzisku. Z bohatého
svatebního věna počal od Becherů skupovat Český sál. Tím udělal
velmi výhodný, možno říci životní obchod, protože Český sál byl
společně se Saským sálem nejvíce prosperujícím pohostinským
střediskem lázeňského města. Na budově Českého sálu však vázly
ještě nějaké dluhy, jejichž splácení se manželům Puppovým protáhlo až do roku 1782, kdy se Český sál konečně stal jejich majetkem
nezatíženým břemeny. V témže roce Pupp koupil i přilehlou lipovou Alej, v níž na žádost hostů zvětšil počet laviček. Cesty Aleje
upravil pro jízdu na koni a vjezd kočárů. Johann Georg Pupp byl
obchodně velmi zdatný a brzy Český sál a Alej nesly jeho jméno, tj.
Puppovský či Poppovský sál a Puppovská alej.
Český sál měl v přízemí a v patře celkem tři velké sály, v nichž se
konaly všechny slavnosti, bály a hostiny šlechty. Koncerty se konaly

v patře, protože zdejší sál byl větší a měl
velmi dobrou akustiku. Johann Georg
Pupp si byl dobře vědom společenského a ekonomického potencionálu svého majetku a investoval
do něj proto velké finanční prostředky. K Českému sálu patřil
rovněž pozemek se zmíněnou
alejí lip, v níž se za časů Johanna
Georga Puppa každý rok v létě
odehrávaly velkolepé slavnosti.
Z těchto oslav vydatně profitoval
především hostinský Pupp. Johannu
Georgovi to však nestačilo…

Die Geschichte von Grandhotel Pupp beginnt wie ein Märchen über einen armen
Jungen, der durch vorteilhafte Heirat mit einer wohlhabenden Braut, zu einem reichen Mann wurde. Die
Geschichte von Pupp ist aber kein Märchen und so blicken wir in
den nebeligen Spiegel der Zeit…
Im Jahre 1767 kam aus Weltrus (Veltrusy) bei Kralup an der
Moldau (Kralupy nad Vltavou) wegen Arbeit ein junger Mann
(*1743) nach Karlsbad, der Johann Georg Pupp hieß. Eine Zeit lang
war er Konditor bei Grafen Chotek auf seinem Schloss in Weltrus
(Veltrusy), wo er wahrscheinlich die Lehre abschloss. Irgendwo
schreibt man, dass Pupp nach Karlsbad mit dem Grafen Chotek das
erste mal bereits im Jahre 1759 kam. Pupps ursprünglicher Name
war Popp oder Pop, erst in Karlsbad schrieb sich der Konditor irgendwann nach dem Jahre 1775 Pupp. Die Gründe für diese winzige Namenskorrektur kennt man nicht.
Einstellung fand der junge Pupp bei dem geehrten Karlsbader
Konditor und Cafébesitzer (Coffetiér) Mitterbacher in seinem
Haus Grüne Melone auf der Alten Wiese Nr. 332. Bei den
Mitterbachers fand Pupp nicht nur Arbeit, sondern auch seine geliebte Ehefrau. Im Jahre 1775 heiratete Johann Georg Pupp
Mitterbachers einzige Tochter Franziska. Von reicher Mitgift begant er von den Bechers den Böhmischen Saal auf zu kaufen, Teil

für Teil. Somit machte er sehr günstiges, man kann sagen, das
Geschäft seines Lebens. Denn der Böhmische Saal war gemeinsam
mit dem Sächsischen Saal die meist prosperierende Gastwirtschaft
in der Kurstadt. Am Saalgebäude lasteten aber noch einige
Schulden, die das Ehepaar Pupp bis 1782 abbezahlte, als der
Böhmische Saal endlich zu ihrem schuldenfreien Besitz wurde. Im
gleichen Jahr kaufte Pupp auch die anliegende Lindenallee, in der
er auf Wunsch der Gäste mehrere Bänke platzierte. Die Wege der
Allee passte er für das Pferdereiten und die Kutschenfahrt an.
Johann Georg Pupp war ein guter Geschäftsmann und bald trugen
der Böhmische Saal und die Allee seinen Namen, d. h. Pupp- oder
Poppischen Saal und Puppische Allee.
Der Böhmische Saal hatte im Erdgeschoss und im Stock insgesamt
drei große Säle, in denen alle Feste, Bälle und Festmahle des Adels
stattfanden. Konzerte fanden im Stock statt, weil der hiesige Saal
größer war und sehr gute Akustik hatte. Johann Georg Pupp war
sich gut des gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Potentials seines
Eigentums bewusst und investierte in ihn deshalb große finanzielle
Mittel. Zum Böhmischen Saal gehörte auch das Grundstück mit
der erwähnten Linderallee, in der sich in der Zeit von Johann
Georg Pupp jedes Jahr im Sommer großartige Feiern abspielten.
Aus diesen Festen profitierte erträglich vor allem der Gastwirt
Pupp. Ihm reichte es aber nicht…
Founding Father
The history of Grandhotel Pupp is like a fairytale about a poor boy
who became rich by marrying a wealthy girl. But, the story of the
Pupp is true. So, let us look into the misty mirror of time...
In 1767, a young man (*1743) named Johann Georg Pupp came to
work in Carlsbad from Veltrusy near the town of Kralupy nad Vltavou.
He some time worked as a confectioner to Count Chotek at his castle
in Veltrusy, where he had probably spent his apprentice years. Some

sources indicate that Pupp came to Carlsbad with Count Chotek as
early as in 1759. This claim can neither be ruled out, nor confirmed.
For the sake of accuracy, however, we should mention that Pupp's
original name had been Popp or Pop. The confectioner began writing
his name as Pupp in Carlsbad at some time after the year 1775. The
motive for this minor modification of his name is unknown. Young
Pupp found a job with respected Carlsbad confectioner and coffeehouse proprietor (coffetiér) Mitterbacher in his house (No. 332) on the
Old Meadow promenade, which bore the name The Green Mellon.
Pupp not only found a job with the Mitterbacher family but also his
beloved wife. In 1775, Johann Georg Pupp married Mitterbacher's
only daughter, Franziska. Johann used his wifeś dowry to buy
Bohemian Hall from the Bechers step by step. It was quite a bargain perhaps the deal of his life. Czech Hall and Saxony Hall were the most
prosperous hospitality facilities in the spa. However, Czech Hall was
encumbered with debts and their settlement was protracted until 1782
when Franziska and Johann Georg Pupp finally succeeded in freeing
the hall of all burdens. That year, Pupp also acquired the adjacent lime
tree alley where he increased the number of benches upon the request
of the guests. Moreover, he repaired the alley paths, making them accessible for guests on horseback and in carriages.
Johann Georg Pupp was an able businessman, and both Czech Hall
and the Alley soon acquired his name - i.e. the Pupp or Popp Hall
and the Pupp Alley. Czech Hall housed three spacious saloons on the
ground floor and the first floor, which served as a venue for all the
festivities, balls, and banquets of the nobility. Concerts took place on
the first floor, which provided more space and very good acoustics.
Johann Georg Pupp was well aware of the social and business potential of his property and, thus, he invested immense funds into it.
The section of land with the lime tree alley adjacent to Czech Hall was

Důležité jsou sudy
Sudy zásadně ovlivňují zrání whisky, a proto je jejich výběru věnována velká pozornost. Původní destilát je bezbarvý, teprve postupem doby získává barvu ze dřeva sudu, ve kterém zraje. Zrání je
ovlivňováno druhem dřeva, předchozím použitím sudu, ale třeba
i polohou sudu. Důležitá je zejména doba, po kterou whisky v sudu
zraje. Při delším zrání může whisky ze sudu vylouhovat hodně taninu a mít až dřevitou příchuť.
Sudy jsou vyráběny z dubu španělského, který obsahuje více pryskyřice, méně používaného dubu francouzského či amerického bílého dubu. Americký dub je tvrdší a whisky v něm zraje pomaleji. Zajímavou
zvláštností jsou sudy z japonského dubu mizunara. Velmi ojediněle se
objeví sud z jiného dřeva, třeba z ořechu či dokonce mahagonu.
Téměř všechny skotské whisky zrají v dubových sudech, jejichž
dřevo není příliš pórovité.
Skotská whisky zrála původně v sudech dovážených z Anglie. Tam
se však zásoba dubového dřeva rychle vyčerpala, a tak vznikla
vlastně z nouze cnost: plnění whisky do již použitých sudů, což je
dnes nejpodstatnější pro chuť a kvalitu nápoje.
Sudy dříve použité pro zrání sherry
V Anglii bylo v oblibě pití sherry, které se tam dováželo ze Španělska,
a sudy zbývaly. Dodávaly se tedy do Skotska, kde byly používány ke
zrání whisky, kterou zjemňují a dávají jí ořechově vínovou příchuť
a plnost. Proto v současné době jsou pro potřeby Skotska vyráběny
ve Španělsku nové sudy, záměrně nejdříve plněné sherry.
Sudy dříve použité pro zrání bourbonu
Zásoby sudů po sherry se však rychle vyčerpávaly, proto začaly být

používány sudy po bourbonu. Jsou vypalované, a tím poměrně
snadno předávají nápoji příchuť vanilinu, karamelu, taninu i další
aroma. Používají se velmi často, některé palírny používají jen tyto
sudy. Mají i tu výhodu, že je snadné je získat v USA - bourbon
podle amerického zákona smí zrát v sudu pouze jednou.
Sudy dříve použité pro zrání portského a madeiry
Tyto sudy jsou používány v menší míře pro zrání, častěji pro dozrávání, kdy whisky zraje např. v sudech po bourbonu a pro zjemnění
se půl roku až dva roky nechává dozrát v těchto sudech.
Sudy dříve použité pro zrání rumu
Největší úspěch zatím měly sudy po rumu Demerara, které byly použity pro dozrávání (až 3 roky), jen výjimečně pro celou dobu zrání.
Jako první s tímto pokusem započali v Glenrothes a Springbank
a výsledek byl uspokojivý. Řada dalších palíren je následuje.
Sudy dříve použité pro zrání koňaku a armaňaku
Sudy byly použity pouze k dozrávání, ale v některých palírnách
tyto zkoušky nebyly vždy úspěšné (např. Glenmorangie).
Sudy použité pro zrání vína
Jako novinka jsou v poslední době používány sudy po víně. Jsou
z francouzského nebo středoevropského dubu.
Sudy nové, vypálené jsou používány především pro zrání obilné
(grain) whisky.
Sudy zcela nové jsou používány jen výjimečně.
Je zajímavé, že v Laphroaig zrála whisky i v sudu od české slivovice.
Její osud se nepodařilo zjistit, jednalo se o jakési privátní plnění.

Wichtig sind die Fässer
Die Fässer beeinflussen wesentlich die Reifung des Whiskys, des­
halb wird derer Auswahl große Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Das
ursprüngliche Destillat ist farblos, erst mit der Zeit bekommt es die
Farbe vom Holz des Fasses, in dem es reift. Die Reifung wird von
der Holzart, von der vorherigen Nutzung des Fasses, sowie von
dem Standort des Fasses beeinflusst. Wichtig ist vor allem die Zeit,
die der Whisky im Fass reift. Beim längeren Reifen kann der
Whisky aus dem Fass viel Tannin auslaugen und er kann einen
Holzgeschmack haben.
Die Fässer werden aus der spanischen Eiche hergestellt, die mehr
Harz beinhaltet, weniger wird die französische Eiche oder die amerikanische Weiß-Eiche gebraucht. Die amerikanische Eiche ist
härter und der Whisky reift in ihr langsamer. Interessant sind die
Fässer aus der japanischen Eiche Mizunara. Sehr selten gibt es ein
Fass aus einer anderen Holzart, zum Beispiel aus Nussbaum oder
sogar Mahagoni.
Fast alle Scotch Whiskys reifen in Eichenfässern, deren Holz nicht
sehr porenartig ist.
Der Scotch Whisky reifte ursprünglich in Fässern, die aus England
importiert wurden. Dort erschöpfte sich jedoch schnell der Vorrat
an Eichenholz, und so entstand eigentlich aus der Not eine Tugend:
die Füllung von Whisky in bereits benutzte Fässer, was heute am
wichtigsten für den Geschmack und die Qualität des Getränkes ist.
Fässer, die zuerst für die Reifung von Sherry benutzt wurden
In England trank man sehr gern Sherry, den man dorthin aus
Spanien einführte. Die Fässer blieben übrig und so lieferte man sie
nach Schottland, wo in ihnen der Whisky reifte. Sie verfeinern ihn
und geben ihm einen Nuss- und Weingeschmack und die Fülle.
Deshalb werden heute für Schottland in Spanien neue Fässer hergestellt, zuerst absichtlich mit dem Sherry gefüllt.
Fässer die zuerst für die Reifung von Bourbon benutzt wurden
Der Vorrat an Fässern nach Sherry wurde jedoch schnell verbraucht, deshalb begann man, die Fässer nach Bourbon zu benut-

zen. Sie sind ausgebrannt, und somit übergeben sie dem Getränk
ziemlich leicht einen Geschmack von Vanillin, Karamell, Tannin
und weitere Aromas. Man benutzt sie sehr oft, manche Brennereien
benutzen nur diese Fässer. Sie haben auch den Vorteil, dass man sie
in den USA einfach erhält - Bourbon darf im Fass laut des amerikanischen Gesetzes nur einmal reifen.
Fässer, die zuerst für die Reifung von Portwein
und Madeira benutzt wurden
Diese Fässer werden in einem geringeren Ausmaße für die Reifung
benutzt, öfter für die Nachreifung, wo der Whisky z. B. in den
Fässern nach Bourbon reift und wegen der Verfeinerung lässt man
ihn ein halbes Jahr bis zwei Jahre in diesen Fässern reifen.
Fässer, die zuerst für die Reifung von Rum benutzt wurden
Den größten Erfolg hatten bisher die Fässer nach dem Demerara
Rum, die zur Nachreifung benutzt wurden (bis zu 3 Jahren), nur
ausnahmsweise für die ganze Reifungsdauer. Das erste Mal begann
man mit diesem Experiment in Glenrothes und Springbank und
das Ergebnis war befriedigend. Weitere Brennereien folgen ihnen.
Fässer, die zuerst für die Reifung
von Cognac und Armagnac benutzt wurden
Die Fässer wurden nur zur Nachreifung benutzt, aber in manchen
Brennereien waren diese Prüfungen nicht immer erfolgreich
(z. B. Glenmorangie).
Fässer, die zuerst für die Reifung von Wein benutzt wurden
In der letzten Zeit werden auch die Weinfässer benutzt. Sie sind aus
der französischen oder mitteleuropäischen Eiche.
Neue ausgebrannte Fässer werden vor allem für die Reifung von
Getreidewhisky (grain) benutzt.
Völlig neue Fässer werden nur ausnahmsweise benutzt.
Es ist interessant, dass in Laphroaig der Whisky auch im Fass nach
dem tschechischen Sliwowitz reifte. Sein Schicksal gelang jedoch
nicht zu ermitteln, es handelte sich um eine private Füllung.

A Thousand Tastes of Whisky
Casks Are Important
Casks fundamentally influence whisky ripening and that is why
special attention is paid to their choice. The original spirit is colourless and it gradually takes the colour of the wood from which
the cask is made and in which it ripens. Ripening is influenced by
the sort of wood, the previous use of the cask but, too, the position
of the cask. Especially the time necessary for whisky ripening is
important. If it is longer, whisky can leach lots of tannin from the
cask and can have an almost woody flavour.
Casks are made from Spanish oak, which contains more resin,
French oak or American white oak is used less frequently. American
oak is harder and whisky ripens for a longer time in it. An interesting
speciality are casks from Japanese oak Mizunara. Casks from other
sorts of wood, e.g. nut or mahogany, appear only sporadically.
Almost all Scotch whiskies ripen in oak casks whose wood is not
very porous. Scotch whisky ripened originally in casks imported
from England. However, the supply of oak was quickly exhausted
there and so a virtue was made of necessity: casks which had
­already been used before were filled with whisky. This turned out
to be the most important factor influencing the flavour of the spirit
as well as its quality.
Ex-sherry casks
Sherry, which was imported to England from Spain, was popular
there and casks were left. They were therefore shipped to Scotland
where they were used for whisky ripening. They make whisky finer
and add it a nut and winny flavour and fullness. These days new
casks are made for the needs of Scotland in Spain and are intentionally filled with sherry at first.
Ex-bourbon casks
The supplies of ex-sherry casks were exploited fast and that was

why casks after bourbon started to be used. They are burnt off and
can therefore pass different flavours to the spirit relatively easily e.g. the flavour of vanillin, caramel, tannin and others. They are
used very often and some distilleries use only these types of casks.
Their advantage also is that they are easily available in the U.S.A. bourbon is allowed to ripen in the cask only once by the American
law.
Ex-port wine and ex-Madeira casks
These casks are used for ripening in a smaller degree, they are rather used for finishing whisky, which means that whisky ripens in
ex-bourbon casks and then it is finished in these casks where it is
left for half a year up to two years.
Ex-rum casks
The casks after Demerara rum have had the biggest success so far.
They were used for whisky finishing (up to three years) and only
occasionally for the whole period of ripening. The distilleries in
Glenrothes and Springbank were the first to try them and the result
was satisfactory. A number of other distilleries follow them.
Ex-cognac and ex-Armagnac casks
The casks were used only for finishing but these attempts were not
always successful in some distilleries (e.g. in Glenmorangie).
Ex-wine casks
Ex-wine casks are a recent novelty. They are made from French
or Middle European oak.
New burnt off casks are first of all used for grain whisky ripening.
Brand-new casks are used only exceptionally.
It is interesting that whisky ripened even in a cask after Czech plum
brandy (slivovice). However, the result of this attempt is not known,
it was a sort of private matter.

aristokracie
Karlovy Vary byly dostaveníčkem aristokracie od dob, kdy se zde
začal rozvíjet lázeňský a společenský život. Návštěva lázeňského
města se stala módou. V 18. století byly oblíbené louky v ohbí říčky
Teplé, kde probíhaly zábavy, oslavy a hostiny. Proto právě zde vy­
rostl první karlovarský lusthaus Saský sál, předchůdce dnešního
Grandhotelu Pupp. Každý šlechtic se chtěl pochlubit originalitou
svých nápadů. Jednou se konala francouzská slavnost, při níž docházelo k veselým scénkám, když zpoza sedadel a provrtaného
parketu vytryskla na nic netušící páry voda, jindy zazářil svým nápadem hrabě Thurn-Taxis, když uspořádal pod širým nebem šachovou hru s živými figurami. Koncem 18. století se mezi šlechtou ujal
módní zvyk pořádat kromě večerních reunionů také společné snídaně, často i s tancem. Zakládaly se dokonce snídaňové kluby.
Skvělá léta šlechtických zábav, tzv. Dukátová léta, kdy se u Vřídla
pravidelně scházely rody Auersbergů, Schwarzenbergů, Claryů,
Windischgratzů, Thurn-Taxisů a další evropská panstva s modrou
krví, přerušilo až revoluční období kolem roku 1848. Nově se pak

Letošní setkání aristokratů z celé Evropy, známé jako Karlovarský vík­
end, uvítají Karlovy Vary již tradičně koncem dubna. Pravidelná dostaveníčka začal organizovat po otevření hranic Oron Michael Kalkert.
Po třech letech se k němu připojila Johanna von Papen a Michael
Kindahl ze Švédska. Nejprve přijížděli hlavně němečtí hosté, dnes jsou
na seznamu šlechtici z většiny evropských zemí, ale nechybí ani zástupci modré krve ze Severní i Jižní Ameriky, Austrálie nebo Barmy.
Hlavním bodem víkendového programu je sobotní Jarní ples
v Slavnostním sále Grandhotelu Pupp. Pánové si pro tuto příležitost
mohou vybrat mezi frakem, smokingem či uniformou se všemi řády.
Dámy mají předepsánu velkou vídeňskou róbu. Samozřejmostí jsou
oslnivé šperky a největší pozornost přitahují překrásné korunky. Večer
zahajují úvodním tancem debutanti, nejmladší šlechtická generace
uváděná poprvé do společnosti. Pečlivě vybrané čtyřchodové menu je
servírováno všem čtyřem stům účastníků plesu v rychlém sledu, aby
mohli co nejdříve ovládnout parket a prošlapat nejedny taneční střeví-

ce. V neděli se koná mše v kostele sv. Máří Magdalény a poté se hosté
v průvodu odebírají na brunch do Poštovního dvora. Nedělní odpoledne je plné příprav na poslední společný večer, tentokrát v zábavných kostýmech. Součástí Maškarního bálu je tombola, jejíž výtěžek
každoročně putuje na vybraný charitativní projekt. V rámci letošního
17. ročníku bude podpořena organizace Lékaři bez hranic.
Treffpunkt der Aristokratie
Karlsbad war Treffpunkt der Aristokratie seit der Zeit, als sich hier
das Kur- und Gesellschaftsleben zu entwickeln begann. Der Besuch
der Kurstadt wurde Mode. Im 18. Jahrhundert waren die Wiesen im
Flussbogen der Tepl beliebt, wo Vergnügen, Feiern und Festessen
stattfanden. Deshalb entstand gerade hier das erste Karlsbader
Lusthaus der Sächsische Saal, der Vorgänger des heutigen
Grandhotels Pupp. Jeder Adelige wollte sich mit der Originalität
seiner Ideen rühmen. Einmal fand eine französische Feier statt,
während der es zu lustigen Szenen kam, als auf die nichts ahnenden
Paare hinter den Sitzen und vom durchgebohrten Parkett das
Wasser aufspritzte, ein andermal glänzte mit seiner Idee Graf
Thurn-Taxis, als er unter freiem Himmel eine Schachpartie mit lebendigen Figuren veranstaltete. Am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts
wurde unter den Adeligen Mode, außer der abendlichen Reunions
auch ein gemeinsames Frühstück, oft mit Tanz verbunden, zu ver­
anstalten. Es wurden sogar Frühstücksklubs gegründet. Die goldenen Jahre des adeligen Vergnügens, die sog. Dukatenjahre, als sich
am Sprudel regelmäßig die Familien Auersberg, Schwarzenberg,

Clary, Windisch-Graetz, Thurn-Taxis und andere europäischen
Herrschaften mit dem blauen Blut trafen, unterbrach erst das
Revolutionszeitalter um das Jahr 1848. Karlsbad öffnete sich den
Adelsfamilien neu am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Das diesjährige Treffen der Aristokraten aus ganz Europa, das als das
Karlsbader Wochenende bekannt ist, heißt Karlsbad bereits traditionell am Ende April willkommen. Die regelmäßigen Rendezvous begann nach der Eröffnung der Grenzen Oron Michael Kalkert zu organisieren. Nach drei Jahren schlossen sich ihm Johanna von Papen
und Michael Kindahl aus Schweden an. Zuerst kamen hauptsächlich
die deutschen Gäste, heute stehen auf der Liste die Adeligen aus den
meisten Ländern Europas, es fehlen aber auch nicht die Vertreter des
blauen Blutes aus Nord- sowie Südamerika, Australien oder Birma.
Der Höhepunkt im Wochenendprogramm ist der Frühlingsball am
Samstag im Festsaal des Grandhotels Pupp. Die Herren können zu
dieser Gelegenheit zwischen Frack, Smoking oder Uniform mit allen Orden wählen. Die Damen haben die Wiener große Robe vorgeschrieben. Selbstverständlich ist der glänzende Schmuck und die
größte Aufmerksamkeit erregen die wunderschönen Kronen. Den
Abend eröffnen mit einem Einleitungstanz die Debütanten, die
jüngste adelige Generation, die zum ersten Mal in die Gesellschaft
eingeführt wird. Das sorgfältig ausgewählte Viergang-Menü wird
allen vierhundert Ballteilnehmern geschwind serviert, sodass sie
möglichst bald das Parkett beherrschen können und manche
Tanzschuhe durchtreten. Am Sonntag wird ein Gottesdienst in der
Maria Magdalena Kirche abgehalten und danach begeben sich die

Gäste im Umzug in den Posthof zum Brunch. Der Sonntagnachmittag
ist voller Vorbereitungen auf den letzten gemeinsamen Abend, dies­
mal in lustigen Kostümen. Am Maskenball gibt es auch eine
Tombola, deren Erlös alljährlich zu einem guten Zweck genutzt
wird. Im Rahmen des diesjährigen 17. Jahrganges wird die
Organisation Ärzte ohne Grenzen unterstützt.
A Rendezvous of the Aristocracy
Karlovy Vary has been a rendezvous of the aristocracy since the time
when spa and social life started developing here. A visit to the spa
town became a fashion. Especially the meadows in the bend of the
Teplá River were popular in the 18th century. Parties, celebrations and
banquets were held there. It was why the first Karlovy Vary lusthaus
called the Saxon Hall, the forerunner of the Grandhotel Pupp, was
built just here. Every nobleman wanted to show how original his ideas
were. Once there was a French celebration with funny scenes when
water started pouring at unsuspecting pairs from behind the seats and
holes drilled in the dance floor, then Count Thurn-Taxis came with an
original idea and organized a game of chess with live chess figures in
the open air. Apart from evening reunions, organizing of common
breakfasts, often with dance, became popular with the aristocracy in
the late 18th century. There were even established breakfast clubs. The
splendid “Ducat Years”, when the Auersberg, Schwarzenberg, Clary,
Windischgratz, Thurn-Taxis and other European noble families with
blue blood regularly met at the Sprudel, were interrupted by the revolutionary period about the year 1848. In modern times, Karlovy Vary
opened for noble families in the early 20th century.

Karlovy Vary will traditionally welcome this year´s meeting of aristocrats from whole Europe, which is known as the Karlovy Vary
Weekend, at the end of April. It was Oron Michael Kalkert who
started organizing the regular rendezvous after the borders had
been opened. Johanna von Papen and Michael Kindahl from
Sweden joined him three years later. At first mainly German visitors
came but today noblemen from most European countries are on the
list. In addition to it, there are also representatives of blue blood
from South and North America, Australia or Burma.
The main point of the weekend programme is the Spring Ball in the
Festive Hall of the Grandhotel Pupp on Saturday. On this occasion,
gentlemen put on a tailcoat, a dinner coat or a uniform with all honours. Ladies are expected to wear a Viennese full-length gown and,
of course, sparkling jewels including beautiful crowns which attract
the most attention. The evening starts with an opening dance of debutantes and debutants, the youngest aristocratic generation that is
introduced into society for the first time. A carefully chosen fourcourse menu is served to all four hundred participants in the ball in
a quick succession so that they can rule the dance floor as soon as
possible and wear out dance shoes.
On Sunday a mass in the Mary Magdalene Church follows and then
the noble visitors form a procession and go for a brunch in the Post
Court. The afternoon on Sunday is full of preparations for the last
common evening, this time in funny costumes. A part of the Fancy
Dress Ball is a tombola. The money from it goes to a chosen charity
project every year. The 17th year of the aristocratic meeting will
support the organization Doctors without Borders.

Nejen v půvabném karlovarském údolí, ale i v okolních stráních
najdeme lázeňské hotely a obytné domy a z vrcholků zalesněných
kopců se můžeme kochat nádhernými vyhlídkami na město. Jak se
dostat do výšek? K městu už více než sto let neodmyslitelně patří
lanové dráhy. Plánováno jich bylo počátkem 20. století několik desítek (k Linhartu, z Tržiště k Jelenímu skoku, na Goethovu vyhlídku).
Nadšení technikou bylo veliké. Započaty však byly čtyři, dokončeny
tři. Dnes jsou v provozu pouze dvě. Kam nás nezaveze lanovka, tam
se můžeme vydat pěšky. Vždyť přece chůze je tak zdravá... A patří ke
karlovarské lázeňské léčbě.
Nastoupit do vozu lanové dráhy Diana můžeme poblíž
Grandhotelu Pupp, na konci Mariánské uličky. Téměř půlkilometrová trať překonává výškový rozdíl 165 m. Lanovka nás zaveze na
Výšinu přátelství k rozhledně a restauraci Diana, do nadmořské
výšky 560 m. Provoz této pozemní kolejové dráhy byl zahájen
5. srpna 1912. Byla postavena vídeňskou stavební společností Leo
Arnoldi na základě švýcarských projektů. Je jednokolejná, s výhybkou o délce 102 metry. Technické zařízení dodala rakouská
společnost Siemen Schuckert Werke. Trať vede lesním terénem,
zčásti v betonovém koridoru, zčásti na náspu nebo v úrovni okolní krajiny. Vystoupit je možno i na mezistanici Jelení skok, kde se
také protijedoucí vozy míjejí. V osmdesátých letech byla lanová
dráha kompletně zrekonstruovaná, vozy vyměněny a postavena
nová budova horní stanice. Budova dolní nástupní stanice je původní.Vyjeďme se pokochat výhledem na město, nebo se vydat
hlouběji do lázeňských lesů. Kdo nebyl na Dianě, jako by nebyl
v Karlových Varech!

Die Seilbahn Diana
Nicht nur im zauberhaften Karlsbader Tal, sondern auch in den
umliegenden Hängen findet man Kurhotels und Wohnhäuser und
von den Gipfeln der bewaldeten Hügel kann man die wunderschönen Aussichten auf die Stadt genießen. Wie kommt man in die
Höhen? Zur Stadt gehören bereits seit mehr als hundert Jahren die
Seilbahnen. Geplant wurden am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts einige
(zum Linhart, vom Markt zum Hirschsprung, auf die Goethe
Aussicht). Die Begeisterung von der Technik war groß. Bauen begann man vier, fertig gebaut wurden drei. Heute sind nur zwei in
Betrieb. Wohin uns nicht die Seilbahn bringt, dorthin kann man zu
Fuß gehen. Denn das Gehen ist ja so gesund... Und es gehört zur
Karlsbader Kur.
In den Wagen der Seilbahn Diana kann man in der Nähe vom
Grandhotel Pupp einsteigen, am Ende der Mariánská Straße. Die
fast einen halben Kilometer lange Strecke überwindet einen
Höhenunterschied von 165 m. Die Seilbahn bringt uns auf die
Freundschaftshöhe (Výšina přátelství) zu dem Aussichtsturm und
dem Restaurant Diana, in die Seehöhe 560 m. Diese Standseilbahn
wurde am 5. August 1912 in Betrieb gesetzt. Sie wurde von der
Wiener Baugesellschaft Leo Arnoldi anhand der schweizerischen
Projekte gebaut. Sie ist eingleisig, mit einer Weiche von einer Länge
von 102 Metern. Die technische Ausstattung lieferte die österreichische Gesellschaft Siemens Schuckert Werke. Die Strecke führt
durch den Wald, teilweise im Betonkorridor, teilweise auf einem
Erdwall oder in Höhe der umliegenden Landschaft. Es ist möglich
auch in der Zwischenstation Hirschsprung (Jelení skok) auszustei-

achtziger Jahren wurde die Seilbahn komplett wiederhergestellt, die
Wagen ausgewechselt und es wurde ein neues Gebäude der oberen
Station gebaut. Das Gebäude der unteren Einstiegsstation ist ursprünglich. Fahren wir hinauf und beglücken wir uns an der
Aussicht auf die Stadt, oder begeben wir uns tiefer in die Kurwälder.
Wer nicht auf Diana war, als ob er nicht in Karlsbad wäre!
A Cable Car Railway Diana
You can find spa hotels and residential houses not only in the beautiful Karlovy Vary valley but also on the hillsides surrounding it and
you can feast your eyes on the wonderful views of the town from the
tops of the wooded hills. How to get into those heights? Cable car
railways have been an inseparable part of the town for more than
a hundred years. Tens of them were planned to be built in the early
20th century (to Linhart, from the Market Place to the Deer´s Jump
or to Goethe´s Lookout). Enthusiasm about technology was enormous. However, only four of them were started and three were
completed. Today only two of them are in operation. And if there is
a place where a cable car railway cannot take you, you can reach it
on foot. After all, walking is so healthy... And it is a part of Karlovy
Vary spa treatment.
You can take the cable car railway Diana near the Grandhotel Pupp,
at the end of Mariánská Lane. The difference in elevation on the half
a kilometre-long-route is 165 metres. The cable car will take you to
the Height of Friendship and the Diana Restaurant, into the altitude
of 560 metres. The cable car railway was opened on 5th August

Karlovy Vary Souvenirs
Lázeňské oplatky
Pochutnáte si na nich nejen při procházce po promenádách, ale
můžete je přivézt z lázní v barevné krabičce jako originální suvenýr.
Prvním dokladem jejich existence jsou dochované formy na pečení,
tzv. oplatnice z poloviny 18. století a první doporučení je v průvodci
z roku 1788. Oplatky se původně pekly v domácnostech. Byly různě
zdobené, v průměru měly jen kolem 13 cm. Obzvlášť jemné těsto prý
dokázala připravit jistá Barbara Naslerová, která přišla do Karlových
Varů z Lubence a později se provdala za Karla Bayera. V roce 1867
založila první oplatkárnu. Oplatky se vyvážely do mnoha zemí
Evropy, firma Karl Bayer dokonce uspokojovala mlsné jazýčky na
císařských a královských dvorech. V roce 1902 se upeklo v Kalových
Varech na čtyři miliony oplatek, v roce 1904 už zde bylo dvacet dva
oplatkáren. Oplatky s přísadou vřídelní vody svou lehkou stravitelností přispívaly ke zpestření jídelníčku lázeňských hostů. Dodnes
zaujímá tato pochoutka přední místo mezi karlovarskými specialitami a suvenýry. Pro jejich nezvyklou velikost se s nimi turisté rádi
fotografují. Dostanete spékané oplatky oříškové, mandlové, kokosové, citrónové, vanilkové aj.
Die Kuroblaten
Man kann sie nicht nur während eines Spazierganges auf den
Promenaden auskosten, sondern man kann sie auch in einer bunten
Schachtel als ein originelles Souvenir aus der Kur nach Hause bringen. Der erste Beleg über sie sind die erhaltenen Backformen, sog.
Oblatenformen aus der Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die erste
Empfehlung ist im Reiseführer aus dem Jahre 1788. Die Oblaten
wurden ursprünglich in den Haushalten gebacken. Sie waren verschieden verziert, im Durchschnitt hatten sie nur um die 13 cm.
Besonders feinen Teig sollte eine gewisse Barbara Nasler vorbereiten
können, die nach Karlsbad aus Lubenec (Lubenz) kam und später
Karl Bayer heiratete. Im Jahre 1867 gründete sie die erste Oblaten­
fabrik. Die Oblaten wurden nach ganz Europa exportiert, die Firma
Karl Bayer befriedigte sogar die Schleckermäulchen auf den kaiserlichen und königlichen Höfen. Im Jahre 1902 wurden in Karlsbad vier

1904 waren hier bereits
zweiundzwanzig Oblaten­
fabriken. Die leicht verdaulichen Oblaten mit dem Sprudel­
wasser als Zutat trugen zur Ab­wechs­
lung der Speise­karte der Kurgäste bei. Bis
heute nimmt dieser Leckerbissen die vorderste Stelle unter
den Karlsbader Spezialitäten und Andenken ein. Für ihre ungewöhnliche Größe fotografieren sich mit ihnen gern die Touristen.

Kokos-, Zitronen-, Vanille­geschmack u. a.
Spa Wafers
You can enjoy them on your walks along the promenades but you
can also take them home in a colour box as an original souvenir from
the spa. The first proof of their existence are preserved baking forms
dating from the mid-18th century and the first recommendation can
be found in a guidebook from the year 1788. The wafers were originally baked in households. They were decorated in different ways
and had only about 13 cm in diameter. It is said that it was a Barbara
Naslerová, who had come to Karlovy Vary from Lubenec and later
had married Karl Bayer, who was able to prepare especially fine
batter. She founded the first wafery in 1867. Wafers were exported to
lots of European countries and the Karl Bayer firm even satisfied
sweet tooths at royal and imperial courts. Four million wafers were
baked in Karlovy Vary in 1902 and there were already twenty-two
waferies here in 1904. Wafers with an addition of sprudel water varied the menu of spa patients thanks to their easy digestibility. This
delicacy has been number one among Karlovy Vary specialities and
souvenirs until these days. Tourists loved to be photographed with
them because of their unusual size. You can get wafers of different
flavours, e.g. nut, almond, coco, lemon, vanilla and others.
Osel místo lanovky
V sedmdesátých letech 19. století se rozhodla městská rada zakoupit
v Maďarsku celý vagón oslů. Nebylo pak zvláštností potkávat na vycházkových cestách v lázeňských lesích oslíky s lázeňskými hosty na
pánských nebo dámských sedlech, či dvoukolové kárky tažené oslím
spřežením. Historické prameny se zmiňují i o tom, že i velký básník
Friedrich Schiller využil této atrakce a vyjel si do karlovarských lesů
na oslu. V roce 1900 již bylo v Karlových Varech ustájeno sto oslů,
o něž se starala speciální skupina zaměstnanců. Byli oblečeni do uniforem a čepic se znakem města. Až první světová válka tuto oslí turistickou idylu ukončila.
Ein Esel statt einer Seilbahn
In den siebziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts entschied sich der
Stadtrat, in Ungarn einen Eisenbahnwagen voller Esel zu kaufen.
Man begegnete dann ganz normal in den Kurwäldern auf den
Wanderwegen die Herren und Damen im Sattel eines Esels oder in
Zweiradkarren von einem Eselgespann gezogen. In den historischen
Quellen kann man erfahren, dass sich auch der große Dichter
Friedrich Schiller diese Attraktion gönnte und dass er in die
Karlovy Vary Curiosities

fuhr. Im Jahre 1900 waren in
Karlsbad bereits hundert Esel
eingestallt, um die sich eine
besondere Ange­stellten­gruppe
kümmerte. Sie trugen eine
Uniform und eine Mütze mit
dem Stadtwappen. Erst mit
dem Ersten Weltkrieg hörte
für die Touristen diese
Eselidylle auf.
A Donkey Instead
of a Cable Railway
The town council decided to
buy a wagon full of donkeys
in the 1870s. It was nothing special then to meet donkeys with spa
visitors in ladies ´or men´ s saddles or two-wheeled carriages pulled
by teams of donkeys on the roads and paths in the spa woods.
Historical sources mention the great poet Friedrich Schiller who
made use of this attraction too and went for a ride on the back of
a donkey. A hundred donkeys were stabled in Karlovy Vary in 1900
and a special group of employees looked after them. They wore uniforms and caps with the coat-of-arms of the town. It was only World
War I that finished this idyll.

Wasserleitungen unter der Sprudelkolonnade versorgt die Kurbetriebe
mit dem Sprudelwasser und ist ein Ort, wo man das Sprudel­wasser

An attractive underground sightseeing route leading through vaulted
passages which date from the 18th century will take you back into the
history of Karlovy Vary balneology and the backstage of natural processes. It offers a view of sinter deposits on the walls of the passages,
a unique stalagmite and the most bizarre formations. You will also see
what has been left of old distributing main, rare bacteria and algae and
a unique process of Karlovy Vary special souvenirs making - of stonecrusted roses and figures. The complex system of pipes in the heart of
the Sprudel Colonnade supplies spa facilities with sprudel water and it
is the place where sprudel water is drawn and distributed and where
its temperature is regulated. Tickets are available in the kiosk in the
main hall of the Sprudel Colonnade.

Die Kursaison ist in Karlsbad das ganze Jahr über, die Sommersaison
wird jedoch traditionell feierlich das erste Maiwochenende mit der
Weihe der Quellen eröffnet. In die Stadt kommen bedeutende Gäste
- Botschafter, Politiker, Künstler. Die Kurstadt bietet ein buntes
Programm, es darf der Umzug durch die Stadt nicht fehlen. Er wird
von dem Gründer der Stadt dem Kaiser Karl IV. am Pferd angeführt.
Man kann einen Jahrmarkt der Handwerke, verschiedene Konzerte
und weitere Veranstaltungen einschließlich der für die Kinder
besuchen. Die Feierlichkeiten gibt es im gesamten Stadtzentrum.

Opening of the Spa Season
The spa season lasts in Karlovy Vary all year round; however, the
summer season is traditionally opened with a consecration of
mineral springs at the first weekend in May. Prominent guests ambassadors, politicians and artists come to the town. The spa town
offers a wide choice of programmes including a procession through
the town led by the founder of the town, Emperor Charles IV on
horseback. You can go to see a fair of handicrafts, various concerts
and other programmes including those for children. It is celebrated
in the whole town. This year´s term: 3rd-5th May.

The gastronomic event of the year, the Food Festival Karlovy Vary
2013, will be held in the open space in front of the Hotel Thermal
on the occasion of the opening of the spa season. It will play host to
the best and most interesting Karlovy Vary hotels and restaurants
including the Grandhotel Pupp. Renowned cooks, sommeliers,
barmen and producers of drinks and foods will take part in it.
A part of the festival is a unique offer of tastings and competitions
including that for the fastest head waiter.

Karlovarský půlmaraton
Karlovy Vary se 25. května stanou dalším dějištěm závodů v bě­žec­
kém seriálu RunCzech.
Stejně jako v dalších městech, kde se půlmaratony RunCzech již
uskutečnily, i ten karlovarský povede historickým centrem města a běžci
poznají na vlastní maratonky to nejhezčí, co Karlovy Vary nabízejí.
V závodě startuje také primátor Karlových Varů Petr Kulhánek.
Součástí půlmaratonu bude ještě rodinný běh na 3 km a štafeta.
Der Karlsbader Halbmarathon
In Karlsbad findet am 25. Mai ein Wettbewerb im Rahmen der Lauf­
serie RunCzech statt.
Genauso wie in weiteren Städten, wo der Halbmarathon RunCzech
bereits stattfand, führt auch der Karlsbader durch das historische
Stadtzentrum und die Läufer lernen das schönste, was Karlsbad bietet,
kennen. Im Wettlauf ist auch der Oberbürgermeister von Karlsbad
Herr Petr Kulhánek am Start. Man kann auch an einem Familienlauf,
der 3 km lang ist, sowie an einem Staffellauf teilnehmen.
Karlovy Vary Half-marathon
Karlovy Vary will become another scene of races of the running series
RunCzech. Like in other towns, where the half marathons have already
taken part, the Karlovy Vary marathon, too, will lead through the
historic town centre and the runners will have an opportunity to see
the best that Karlovy Vary can offer. The mayor of Karlovy Vary Petr
Kulhánek will take part in the marathon too. Parts of the half-marathon
will also be a three-kilometre-long family run and a relay race.

European orchestras with the longest tradition (founded in 1835).

MUNICIPAL THEATRE
The pseudorococo building of the Karlovy Vary Municipal
Theatre, which was designed by the Viennese architects Fellner
and Helmer, brings the splendid atmosphere of Vienna of the
19th century into Karlovy Vary. You can enjoy concerts and
operas, operettas and ballets in the enchanting interior in whose
decoration further Viennese artists took part too.

The Most Beautiful View
It is said that the most beautiful view of the world is that from
horseback. But you will like the world from a coach drawn by
a ­team of horses too. Take a ride through the town like in old times.
Imagine crinolines, laces, small umbrellas and top hats... The stand
of decorated coaches and horses is near the Main Post Office or in
Theatre Square.
Projděte se parky
Procházka karlovarskými parky Vám může přinést nejen blahodárný
pocit z krásného prostředí, z barev a vůní kolem. Můžete při ní nejen
osvěžit duši, ale poznat i jednotlivé stromy, vnímat jejich jedinečnost,
historii, krásu. Ve Smetanových sadech u Alžbětiných lázní začíná
naučná dendrologická stezka, která Vás dále provede Dvořákovými
a Skalníkovými sady a zavede Vás přes Divadelní náměstí k sadům
Karla IV. a dále Goethovou stezkou až do krajinářských parků kolem
Poštovního dvora a k japonské zahradě u Parkhotelu Richmond.
O unikátních stromech se více dozvíte z informačních tabulí v parcích. Naučná dendrologická stezka je dlouhá 4,5 km. V městském
infocentru si vyžádejte podrobnou brožurku.
Říká se, že nejkrásnější pohled na svět je ze hřbetu koně. Ale i z kočáru taženého koňským spřežením se Vám svět bude líbit. Projeďte
se po lázeňském městě jak za starých časů. Představte si krinolíny,
krajky, paraplíčka, cylindry... Stanoviště nazdobených kočárů s koňmi najdete u hlavní pošty nebo na Divadelním náměstí.

Ein Spaziergang durch die Karlsbader Parkanlagen schenkt Ihnen
ein wohltuendes Gefühl, ausgelöst von der schönen Umgebung,
den Farben und den Düften ringsum. Man kann nicht nur die Seele
erfrischen, sondern auch einzelne Bäume erkennen, ihre
Einmaligkeit, die Geschichte und die Schönheit wahrnehmen. Im
Smetana Park am Elisabethbad beginnt ein dendrologischer
Lehrpfad, der Sie weiter durch den Dvořák und Skalník Park führt,
über den Theaterplatz zu dem Karl IV. Park, den Goethe Steig bis in
die landschaftlichen Parkanlagen um den Posthof und zum japani­
schen Garten am Parkhotel Richmond. Mehr über die einmaligen
Bäume erfahren sie auf den Infotafeln in den Parkanlagen. Der
dendrologische Lehrpfad ist 4,5 km lang. Im Stadtinfozentrum erhalten Sie eine detaillierte Broschüre.
Take a Walk through Parks
A walk through the parks in Karlovy Vary will not only fill you with
positive feelings caused by the beautiful milieu, colours and sweet
smells surrounding you. You can not only refresh your soul during it
but you can also get to know individual trees and feel their uniqueness,
history and beauty. A dendrological path which starts in Smetana Park
at the Elizabeth Spa Building will take you to Dvořák Park and Skalník
Park, then across Theatre Square and to Charles IV Park and further
on along Goethe Path to landscape parks in the neighbourhood of the
Post Court and to the Japanese Garden at the Parkhotel Richmond.
You can learn more about the unique trees on information boards in
the parks. The instructive dendrological path is 4.5 km long. You can
ask for a detailed brochure in the municipal information centre.
Výlet ke skalním útvarům
Svatošské skály jsou po staletí oblíbeným cílem vycházek lázeňských hostů. Žulové skalní věže v údolí řeky Ohře na turistické
cestě do Lokte tvoří podle pověsti zkamenělý svatební průvod.
Zhrzená vodní víla se tak pomstila svému nevěrnému milému Janu
Svatošovi. Svatošské skály miloval psychoanalytik Sigmund Freud,
dokonce se mu prý o těchto bizarních útvarech často zdálo.
Dostanete se tam pěšky nebo na kole z karlovarské čtvrti Doubí.
Zaujme Vás houpací most přes řeku i turistická hospůdka u něj.
Ein Ausflug zu der Felsformation
Die Hans-Heilig-Felsen (Svatošské skály) sind Jahrhunderte lang
ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel der Kurgäste. Die Granitfelsentürme im
Tal der Eger (Ohře) am Wanderweg nach Elbogen (Loket) bilden
nach einer Sage einen versteinerten Hochzeitszug. Eine verschämte
Wassernixe rächte sich somit an ihrem untreuen Geliebten Hans
Heilig (Jan Svatoš). Die Hans-Heilig-Felsen (Svatošské skály) liebte
der Psychoanalytiker Sigmund Freud, er träumte sogar oft über
diese bizarre Felsformation.Sie gelangen hierher zu Fuß oder mit
dem Rad aus dem Karlsbader Viertel Doubí (Aich). Es wird Sie sicher die Hängebrücke über den Fluss sowie die in ihrer Nähe liegende Gaststätte für Touristen interessieren.

A trip to the Svatošské skály Rocks has been popular with Karlovy
Vary visitors for centuries. A legend has it that the granite rock
towers in the valley of the Ohře River on the tourist track to Loket
represent a petrified wedding procession. A spurned nymph took
her revenge on her unfaithful lover Jan Svatoš in this way. The
psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud loved the Svatošské skály Rocks, it is
even said that he often dreamt about these bizarre rock formations.
You will get there on foot or on a bike from the Karlovy Vary town
part Doubí. A rope bridge across the river and a tourist pub near it
will surely attract your attention.
