110-111 - Revolver Revue
První obálky RR / The First Covers of Revolver První obálky Revolveru. ↘ The first covers of Revolver. I made the first covers of Jednou nohou/Revolver Revue as linocuts. It was the most accessible printing technique, and I could print out up to a hundred copies myself. I printed out the first cover on the old rotary iron in my parents’ apartment, in my room. The second cover was done on an etching press at my friend’s art studio. Since the etching press wasn’t suitable for larger runs — it stretched out the plate — I switched to a printing press. Issue no.5 already used two colors. The following story is connected with it. When Egon Bondy visited my art studio for the first time, Jáchym Topol was also there. Right when he was about to leave, he opened a cupboard with perhaps thirty as-yet undistributed Revolvers (no.5), and he said to Bondy: “Doctor, along with painting, Viktor also puts out Revolver. But you cannot mention this anywhere.” After a while Bondy wrote an article on me for the samizdat magazine Vokno. This is how he started it: “The central theme of Viktor Karlík — indeed one of our youngest artists, but famous despite his age because of the covers and design of Jednou Nohou/Revolver Revue — is the human face.” The StB seized the proofs of that issue of Vokno. The article was only published in 1990. You could depend on the good doctor. 110 111
