Eating out
I want
choose some special place for this Sunday. I am lucky 20 because I have
found 21 an advertisement for a new restaurant at a farm close to 22 the city. So I want
take my parents there for 23 dinner.
I have planned 21 everything. I think we will arrive 24 there tomorrow at 25 11 o’clock. I will
park 24 on the street 27 next to the farm because their garage is closed 28 this spring. We
won’t stay 24 too long because then I want
go
the city park 26.
I hope that the weather will be 24 nice and warm with a clear blue sky so we can take some
photos 14. Then we will go 24
our favourite café, which is near 22 the park,
have some coffee and biscuits.
I hope that everything will be 24 all right and my parents will enjoy 24 the day.

Rule 23: Meals, such as breakfast, lunch and dinner, do not take indefinite articles ‘a/an’.
Jídla, třeba jako snídaně, oběd a večeře, nepřibírají neurčitý člen a/an.

At the Zoo, we had lunch, and took many photos of a lion…
Rule 26: For public places and services we always use the definite article ‘the’ because it is
assumed that both the speaker and the listener know which place and service exactly we have in
mind. See, in the old times, there used to be everything only once - one baker, one dentist, one
post office etc, so people always knew which one you are talking about. This habit, hence the
article, stayed.
Then I want to go to the city park.
Poté chci jít do městského parku.

RULE 27: To add, because we understand that vehicles of public transport are surfaces on which
we can walk, we say ‘get on a bus’, because ‘we are on the bus’. Well, the opposite of ‘on’ is ‘off’,
so then we ‘get off the bus’.
Nutno dodat, že rozumíme, že vozidla hromadné dopravy jsou plošiny, po kterých se dá chodit, takže říkáme ‘get on a bus’ (nastoupit, doslova: dostat se na),
protože my jsme ‘on the bus’ (v autobuse, doslova: na autobuse).
No, a protikladem slova ‘on’ je ‘off’, tudíž vystoupit se řekne ‘get off the bus’.

… and we got off right in front of the Zoo entrance.

RULE 29: If the letter ‘r’ is after a pronounced vowel, we do not pronounce this ‘r’.
Pokud je písmeno ‘r’ po vyslovené samohlásce (a, e, i, o, u), tak jej nevyslovujeme.
