The town of Karlovy Vary is situated less than one hundred and thirty kilometres from Prague. You
can drive there on the westbound R6 road or alternatively, you can take a direct bus. The journey
takes about an hour and a half. The itinerary around Karlovy Vary is designed for walking; trips
between individual towns should ideally be made by car.
The best place to start exploring the region is right in its centre – the town of Karlovy Vary.
Originally, this was a small settlement, which was granted town privileges in 1370. According to
legend, the town owes its expansion to a stag that saved itself from being killed during a royal hunt
by leaping into the thermal springs. This legend also gave its name to our first stop, the Stag’s Leap
lookout. You can get there by using the Diana cable way starting at the Grandhotel Pupp. When you
have had enough of the beautiful views, go back and take a stroll along the Tepla River towards the
town centre. Soon you will encounter the biggest lure of Karlovy Vary, the colonnades. In the
Marketplace Colonnade, there is the Spring of Charles IV, decorated with a relief depicting the
legend of the discovery of the town; and above the Chateau Colonnade, there is a small, originally
Gothic castle that used to belong to Charles IV. Along the colonnades, there are a number of top
quality restaurants and cafés, where you can taste the famous herbal liqueur and spa wafers.
Karlovy Vary is also known for its glass products. If you decide to stay overnight, you should not
leave Karlovy Vary without having a spa treatment in one of the local hotels or spa houses. You will
receive the very best care, like the many famous guests who visited this town before you. Golf lovers
can play a round at one of the many renowned courses in the town’s surroundings. The next stop is
the small town of Bečov nad Teplou, located 16 km south of Karlovy Vary. Here stands a beautiful
Baroque castle, the site where one of the Czech Republic’s most valuable historical treasures was
found – the unique reliquary of St. Maurus, originating from the 13th century. It is the second most
important example of Czech historical jewellery, after the Crown jewels.
Continue on to the town of Loket and to the Gothic castle of the same name, towering above the
Ohře River. It was here where Charles IV was imprisoned by his own father as a child. Later he
granted the town special privileges, such as exemption from taxes. Today, the castle and its
surroundings have a fairy-tale like atmosphere. Those who are interested in the darker aspects of
history may visit the exhibition of instruments of torture in the dungeon. The last stop will be at the
town of Cheb. The greatest attraction is its castle, built under the reign of Holy Roman Emperor
Frederick Barbarossa in the 12th century. Only a part of the castle has been preserved until the
present day, however, its atmosphere is still captivating. Other sights that are worth seeing include
the Square of King George of Poděbrady with its legendary set of eleven medieval merchant houses
called Špalíček. In total, there are fifty-one important historical buildings in the square, due to the
fact that Cheb is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Czech Republic. Why not end your
visit by climbing up to the Bismarck Tower, built to honour the German Chancellor Otto von
Bismarck. It is situated on Green Mountain about four kilometres from the town and offers a lovely
panoramic view of the town of Cheb and the Ore Mountains, Fichtel Mountains and Slavkov Forest.
In good weather, you can also see the Bohemian Forest and its Czech part Šumava.
When in Cheb, the popular Castle Trail simply must be seen, it is an approx. 1200 km route leading
from Germany to the Czech Republic, covering a large amount of historical architectural
monuments. In Czech territory, it includes about thirteen castles and châteaux and one monastery.
Its Czech part begins in Cheb and passes through many other places associated with Charles IV,
such as Loket Castle, Karlštejn, Křivoklát, and Prague Castle.
