1 Games for Disabled Youth Brno 2010
1.1 Project Description
The Games for Disabled Youth is an international sporting and social encounter of young
people with physical handicaps, a unique event in the European context as for the number of
participants (over 530 persons), internationality (10 countries of Europe), scope of the
sporting part (8 sports grounds) and the associated and cultural programme (a charitable
concert, a big photographic competition, an art workshop etc.).
The event was held with the assistance of the European Paralympic Committee and this year
was a "test competition". In the words of John Petersson, President of EPC, the next year
has a big chance to become the historically first European paralympic games of the youth.
The mission of the project is integration of children and youth with physical handicaps to the
society through sporting activities. Sports help disabled children to overcome their handicap.

2 Sports Categories and Sports
The games were divided into three categories
“Masters“ high-performance athletes with health classification
“Open“ athletes without health classification
“Mixed“ programme for mixed teams of handicapped and non-handicapped athletes
“Masters“ category was reserved for athletes with the so called health classification, i.e. for
active athletes with a physical handicap. This category showed the highest international
participation
“Open“ category was reserved for athletes without the so called health classification. The
competitions were held in compliance with the relevant international rules, which, however,
were applied les strictly. This category gives a chance to handicapped children who have
only begun with a sport or only practising recreational sports to meet in a “big competition”
with their athletic models.
“Mixed“ category included a special programme of joint activities of persons with a physical
handicap and “healthy” athletes. This category is one of the parts of the “integration” mission
of the games.
The participants competed in the following sport disciplines:
“Masters“ category
o
Swimming
o

o
Boccia – a sport for persons with reduced mobility of the extremities and with a

4 Náměstí Svobody Square
Friday 25 June 2010, 10 am – 3 pm
On Friday 25 June an associated programme of the Games for Disabled Youth was held in
náměstí Svobody square in Brno.
The visitors could take part in a wheelchair slalom to try how the wheelchair users move
every day and how difficult the wheelchair control is. The organizers prepared a slalom route
and a skills ride for that purpose. The winners of the individual groups received medals with
graphics by the artist Rostislav Pospíšil. Most medals were granted by the paralympic
champion in athletics from Barcelona in 1992 Vojtěch Vašíček.
The visitors also had a chance to try a handbike, i.e. a bike powered by hands only.
The programme was also enriched with two performances of the Brno majorettes LASSIES
currently celebrating five years of their existence.
Children could enjoy an entertainment programme in náměstí Svobody square, including a
big jumping castle or refreshments offered at the stand of the Albert Foundation.
The programme also had its speakers, Jaroslav Kára and kisspatrols of Kiss Hády radio
station.

5 Vaňkovka Shopping Gallery and Wannieck Art Gallery
Saturday 26 June 2010
Vaňkovka Shopping Gallery, 9 am – 4 pm
Wannieck Art Gallery, 9 am – 6 pm
On Saturday 26 June another associated programme of the Games for Disabled Youth was
held between the Vaňkovka Shopping Gallery and the Wannieck Art Gallery. The programme
included a streetball game and the finals of the chess tournament of the previous days.
In the course of the day a competition in ball throwing to the basket was held for the
competitors to find out how difficult it is to hit the basket without the help of legs. The event
was attended by several basketball players of the SK Hobit sports club of Brno, including the
injured motorcycle racer Lukáš Šembera, currently active in the club. The visitors could also
get acquainted with the sport and obtain information about training options in Brno.
The Wannieck Art Gallery itself was the venue of the final round of the chess tournament,
already starting on Thursday at 6 pm and continuing on Friday since 9 am in the Social Care
Institute in Kociánka.
On Saturday the Brno majorettes LASSIES gave another performance in the context of the
Games.
The programme again features the speakers Jaroslav Kára and kisspatrols of Kiss Hády
radio station.

6 Art Workshops
Saturday 26 June 2010, 10 am – 3 pm
Wannieck Art Gallery
Another associated programme held on Saturday 26 June was represented by the art
workshop organised between the Vaňkovka Shopping Gallery and the Wannieck Art Gallery.
There the young handicapped athletes could express themselves through art. There was
also space for other participants who were interested in jointing the handicapped athletes.
The project was conceived as an educational art workshop. The joint task of all participants
was to create a “new square”. The attendees were inspired by náměstí Svobody square, its
appearance, buildings and overall architectural language. Through various tasks explained to
them by Petra Janáčová, specialist in special pedagogy and art mediation of Masaryk
University, the young handicapped artists built or painted houses and created new
pavement.

11 What Was Said about the Games
“Our athletes were much satisfied and appreciated the excellent care taken of them in Brno.
The days spent in Brno were beautiful and we will be happy to return again if possible”.
Christian Rösler
Sportkoordinator
Sächsischer Behinderten-& Versehrtensportverband e. V., Leipzig
“Thank you very much for the access to the Games for Disabled Youth. We were thrilled by
the whole progress and organisation of the Games. We really enjoyed the extended
weekend. I will be happy to come again next your.”
Petra Hnátová
SK APROBA, Čáslav
“Thank you for the pleasant organisation of the Games. We liked our stay in Brno very much
and I hope you will again remember us next year.“
Simona Ballayová
Head of Sports Club of the Handicapped of Košice
“…I would very much like to thank you for organisation of the Games for the Disabled. I
would appreciate if the Games could be held more often than just once a year. I and my
friend Bara were unhappy when we had to leave. I sincerely thank you, I do not think there
was a single participant leaving with other than excellent memories.“
Andrea Machálková,
Voluntary interpreter, Strážnice
“…I would like to thank you for the fantastic experience the interpreting in the course of the
Games was for me. Even though I sometimes had little complaints concerning the
organisation, I still think this was one of the best events I have ever attended (and they were
not a few). And it was also great motivation for my studies… I can see now that those people
who told me that English and special pedagogy was a bad combination were not right.“
I think that my Irish group and me understood each other excellently…We agreed that we
would like to see each other again (Laurence even told me he wanted to come back to learn
Czech...), and so if you manage to organize another Games (I keep my fingers crossed for
you!!!), I will certainly be happy to join and help with anything, especially as concerns my
Irish friends.“
17
Markéta Plocková,

“...I took part in the chess tournament. I admire the organisation, the fact that such a big
event could be organised…the Games brought me new friends and improvement of my
language skills. I would like to take part in the next Games again.“
Miloš Špáta,
Chess player, Teplice
“...We would like to express maximum satisfaction with the conditions we were provided.
Thank you for the possibility to well present this new sport...“
Ladislav Kratina,

“I appreciate the demanding work of the students and all of you who willingly helped. I liked
the overall atmosphere of the event very much. I have no other experience, this was my first
sports games in my life, but I really liked it here. The Games inspired my further living, my
great thanks for that.“
