Annual report on the activities of
the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation
for the year 2012
The mission of the Committee
of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation
is to help people who, because of their poor
state of health or social status, find it difficult
to participate in society or cannot care for
themselves without other people’s assistance.
Through its activities, the Foundation aims to
foster spiritual values and education, defend
human rights and promote generally
acknowledged humanitarian values.
Goals
The principles
The Committee of Good
Will – Olga Havel
Foundation
that guide the Committee
of Good Will – Olga Havel
Foundation
✚✚ The Foundation’s primary objective
is to support social and healthcare
services that help people at risk of social
exclusion claim their dignified place in
society.
✚✚ In particular, the Foundation supports
civic associations and charities that
provide social services for abandoned
and disabled children, the homeless,
women in need, seniors, and people
recovering from illness and injuries,
plus organisations that work to alleviate
people’s suffering during illness and
that provide support during the trying
moments of one’s final days.
✚✚ The Foundation also runs its own
programmes in support of education
for socially disadvantaged or disabled
children. Every year, the Foundation
presents the Olga Havel Award to a
person who despite his or her disability
is engaged in helping others.
✚✚ The Foundation collaborates with other
NGOs in working to enhance the quality
of social and healthcare services and
safeguarding human rights.
✚✚ Foundation grants must be distributed in an effective manner
with a view to their long-term impact. Their distribution must
be done with an eye towards the “weak points” in social,
healthcare and educational policy, and should provide financial
support in places where nobody else is providing funding or
which suffer from a lack of sufficient funds.
✚✚ In publicising our activities – for instance by providing
information on our aims, principles and realised objectives
– we always acknowledge the people and organisations that
have contributed to realising these goals, as well as those who
work for the Foundation behind the scenes or as volunteers.
✚✚ May all our activities, projects, campaigns, research, and
collaborative efforts show the Foundation as an organisation
that acknowledges the human dignity of all people, regardless
of whether they are rich or poor, or whether they live freely
and independently or are dependent on the help of others.
✚✚ May the Foundation’s grants help to find new and effective
solutions to difficult life situations, and may they first and
foremost go to programmes focussed on prevention and
intervention, thus helping to improve the future prospects of
children, adults and families. The Foundation also promotes
meetings and dialogue with non-profit non-governmental
organisations with similar objectives.
✚✚ Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation endeavours
to support civil society and to promote social changes that
will help to integrate people at risk of poverty and social
exclusion. Recently, we have also focused on “participation”
– i.e. on involving socially disadvantaged and/or disabled
individuals in the making of decisions that affect them.
The Committee of Good Will
and Civil society
The Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation (the “Foundation”) traces its origins
back to early 1990, when it was established by Olga Havel. The Committee of Good Will was
registered as a voluntary association on 12th April 1990. The Foundation was re-registered
on 23rd September 1992. In accordance with Act no. 227/1997 on foundations and
endowment funds, on 14th December 1998 the Foundation was registered in the
Foundation Register administered by the Municipal Court in Prague, section N, file 69.
Since its founding, it has been an important financial resource for the needs of non-profit,
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and individuals in the area of social welfare and
healthcare. The Foundation has also played an important role in supporting civil society as
represented by the NGOs and academic institutions with which it systematically cooperates.
In this manner, the Foundation ensures continuous access to information about the needs
of the non-profit sector and of social service recipients. Based on these needs, the Foundation
designs various grants in the areas of healthcare, social services, and education.
The Foundation is engaged in research into the education of disabled individuals with
the aim of providing them with equal opportunities; it also provides educational services
such as scholarships for gifted students from children’s homes, disabled students and/or
students from low-income families, plus specialized seminars for doctors and healthcare
and social welfare workers. Since 2012 the Foundation has been involved in a project
of J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem “Communitas pro praxis”, whose aim is to
deepen knowledge about academic institutions, universities and foundations in society.
Engaged are mainly those features, which develop spiritual values, education, and
protection of human rights and generally respected humanitarian values.
Since its beginnings, the Foundation has undertaken to appeal to society’s moral
conscience and to draw attention to shortcomings in the state’s social policy and
in the work of social, healthcare, educational and other institutions.
The Foundation has gained significant experience thanks to its independent status and
national influence. The experience is helpful when the Foundation helps with enforcing
changes in legislature and supporting organization. The Foundation is also present at
expert seminars and conferences.

Dear friends,
Last year, 2012, was declared a European
Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between
Generations. That is why I have decided to write a short essay
on ageing in a place of introductory word for you.
Time as a physical unit is measureable, equal and merciless. It is shaping
us like growth rings of a tree, being indifferent to their increase. It presses us
with the assignments, starting with the early getting-ups for school; work, with
short and long-term duties which we bear. We live in indifferent time which relates to
how subjectively we live.
I am under the impression that our attitude to time radically changes together with our
age and that it is the old age when we try to understand its integrity in our unique living
in the Earth. We fully realise its existential dimensions, the differences and its integrity.
What I mean is a dimension of the future, the present and the past and time, which we
consciously dedicate to them and meaning, which we assign importance to. The first advantage
of the ageing is a radical change of experiencing. Finally we have more time to take it as a unit.
When I let time and thoughts run through my head, because there is no must, I start to
reminisce. In my eighties, this is a nice and new way how to spend my spare time. I feel “free”
and recall the years when I played the tag with time. Either time was chasing me to do this
or that or I was chasing time to make it.
Today I realise with a relief that I cannot catch up with anything and that I cannot
change the world. I have time to think about things I can still to and to enjoy
that I am not alone in this world.
Yours sincerely
Dana Němcová

A year 2012 was declared to be a European
Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity
between Generations. That is why the
Committee focused particularly on this
segment of social services. It announced
two grant programmes to support the
elderly. The Foundation supports the
hospice movement and projects that
help people who wish to stay active in
their old age, as well as projects that
provide support for abandoned seniors or
for individuals suffering from long-term
illness, particularly in their homes. The
Foundation receives funding for senior
projects from inheritances and from the
proceeds of the Benefit Concerts of Good
Will regularly organised by the KŠB law
offices at the start of the Christmas season
and from an auction of a rare Champaign
Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage from
1921 organised by Gourmet plus, s.r.o. The
employees of the Foundation took part in
several conferences to a European Year
of Active Ageing and Solidarity between
Generations. We became aware of the new
methods activating seniors living in long
stay organizations including those who
suffer from Alzheimer disease, dementia
and other neurological diseases.
In 2012, we distributed a total of
4,109,151 CZK for a diverse range of
projects organised by NGOs as part
of the Senior programme.

New Family
In the end of 2012 with dramatic circumstances the
Parliament of the Czech Republic approved a new policy
implementing socio-legal protection of children which
is a result of long-term demands of NGO. This policy
deals with a threat of children’s proscription (including
the Foundation) and with a new conception of The
Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs regarding the care
of children at risk. Its aim is to decrease the number of
children living in institutions and professionalization of
foster parents, who underwent training in upbringing
children in their own family until the optimal place is
Ordinary Life
Report on the utilisation of interest from the
Foundation Investment Fund (NIF)
These programme funds social projects by NGOs aimed
at helping people at risk of social exclusion to find their
way back to a normal life.
The programme is financed from NIF interest in the
foundation’s assets. Target groups are eighteen-yearolds getting ready to leave children’s homes and
institutions, homeless and unemployed individuals,
street children and women and children who have been
the victims of violence.
In January 2012, the Foundation announced a call for
grant applications for projects by social prevention
organizations for children, youth and adults at risk of
social exclusion. On 17th April 2012, the Foundation’s
Board of Directors decided on the distribution of grants
from NIF interest among 27 non-profit organisations:

Education
Education Fund
When the Education Fund was established it was Olga
Havel who wished for it to become a primary programme
of the Foundation. Her aim was to make education easier
and accessible for disabled children and youngsters
from children’s homes or from socially disadvantaged
families. It has been 18 years since we started financing
scholarships in footsteps of a Czech patron Josef Hlávka.
The scholarships are provided to students who have
complicated relationships in their families and for those
with special needs connected with their handicap. In
order to be eligible and remain eligible for a scholarship,
students must maintain good grades and take an
active approach to their studies. Students receive the
scholarship until graduation as long as their average
grade does not drop below 2 (a B grade). In 2012, we
provided scholarships to a total of 64 secondary school
and university students aged 26 or under. The Foundation
also provided single grants to 32 students for learning
aids, school fees, compensational aids and other needs.
A general partner of the Education Fund is the ČSOB bank.
Advisory board: Ljuba Václavová (chair), Marcela Bideau,
František Kopecký, Milan Pospíšil, Vladimíra Rattayová,
Jan Stolár, Pavlína Folovská-Housová, Linda Kaucká,
Milena Černá; secretary: Eva Kvasničková.
Over the course of 2012, the Foundation spent
a total of 1,525,024 CZK. Of this amount, ČSOB
contributed 1,100,000 CZK.

The Olga Havel Award
This prestigious award is announced three months prior
to the official presentation. Anyone can nominate potential
laureates as long as he or she knows the nominee well.
The objective of the Olga Havel Award is to acknowledge
the achievements of individuals who, despite their disability,
have been truly committed to helping others. Those individuals can be a role model not only for disabled people, but
also for healthy ones. After all, people should not live only
for themselves, but rather for each other and return what
the society gave them. The award recipient is selected by
a jury from a list of nominees. During the awards ceremony,
the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation also
acknowledges important donors, long-time volunteers,
and project organizers in the fields of healthcare, social
services, education and human rights.
Olga Havel Award Jury: Dana Němcová (chair), Iveta Pešková,
Pavel Wiener, Blanka Dvořáková, Eva Hůlková, secretary Soňa Brišová

upper and lower limbs. Mr Kočí created a special
programme “Social and psychological support for
patients in pre-amputation or early post-amputation
therapy” and provides those people with counselling
in a professional level.
The ceremony took place at a summer residence
Hvězda in the presence of the Foundation’s board

In 2012 the Foundation continued administering the
participation of Czech doctors in the prestigious educational project Salzburg Medical Seminars organised
by the Open Medical Institute in collaboration with the
American Austrian Foundation. Last year we received
a total of 176 applications by Czech doctors for 25 seminars in various medical fields, out of which 48 applicants
from all regions in the Czech Republic were selected.
In 2012 the project had its twentieth anniversary.
A turnout of Czech doctors increased in 553 seminar
participants and 48 participants of subsequent internship at clinics in Austria.
In order to disseminate the knowledge from the
Salzburg Medical Seminars, the Foundation organises
annual Prague seminars led by the past participants

Foundation in 2012
The year 2012 was marked by the campaign
Sport for Charity, which focuses on promotion
of sport and charity events. The Foundation
launched a new web page sportprocharitu.cz
through which new sport projects can be registered. The proceeds are used for help to disabled
people. The portal can be also used by the
individual sportsman, who can register here and
choose a project to support.
The Foundation continued with the promotion of its
long-term projects. The 2012 Olga Havel Award
traditionally attracted large attention of the
media. The Foundation continued its collaboration
with Czech Radio, Medical Tribune, Interní medicína
pro praxi, Economia and Newton Media, TV Metropol,
and the MediPool website.
In the course of 2012, the public commemorated the
legacy of Olga Havel. On 25th April a new street bearing
Olga Havel’s name was ceremonially unveiled. It can
be found in Žižkov, Prague 3. Information about this event
was spread by Czech Television, Czech Radio, Lidové
Noviny, Deník a Týden.cz. In 2012 a travelling exhibition
of photographs of Olga Havel continued. The exhibition
took place at the Museum of Central Bohemia in Roztoky
and in Piešťany in Slovakia at an area of Kursalon. The
exhibition’s goal is to revive the memory of Olga Havel
and to remind the public of the beginnings of fundamental
changes in the field of care for people with disabilities,
seniors and the ill, which have taken place since 1989.
The Foundation also joined a international campaign
Why poverty? In the Czech Republic it was realized
by Czech Television. During November 2012 Czech
Television broadcast documentaries promoting the
activities of the Foundation, which helps people with
health and social handicap.

Good News
An electronic magazine Good News, which has
been distributed since 2009, was published four
times in 2012 (on 23rd February, 28th May,
14th September and 7th December).
Each volume of this magazine has its main theme. The
main theme of the first issue paid attention to various
aspects of the old age – not only to specific needs of
elderly, but the issue also was how the elderly can enrich
the others when their ideas are respected. The youngest
member of the Board of directors Josef Beneš nicely
talked about “how the old age needs our help”. In this
context it might seem a bit surprising but the article
“Elpida tour 2011–2012” described a tour of a young
rock band which was accompanied by twenty vocalists,
where the majority of them was 65 plus. Even this is the
way how an active ageing can look like.
The main theme of the second volume, which was
published at the occasion of awarding the Olga Havel
Award in a printed form, was civic society. Its state
was discussed in an interview with Vladimír Hanzel,
a secretary of former president Václav Klaus and
a member of the Board of directors. Basing on his
experience he claimed: “I would hope rather for civic
society than for high politics”. Those who were actively
involved in building of civic society but unfortunately
passed away were also mentioned in this volume. In a
form of photo reportage an event of unveiling a street
of Olga Havel was showed. It has been 16 years since
Olga Havel passed away. And of course, a new laureate
of Olga Havel Award, Josef Kočí, was introduced.
Children growing up without family and the socially excluded were the main topics of the third issue.
Member of the Board of directors of the Foundation
Ivan Douda was interviewed about drug problems, in
which he is a lifelong specialist and that is why he can
claim: “the devil is not hidden in a drug but in a person”.
Readers learned about interesting things about history
of children’s homes, gained information about language
school and about seaside holiday. Thanks to Emilie
Smrčková, who is a leader of the civic association Under
the Wings in Valašské Meziříčí, we could have a look at a
“Halfway house”.
“Exclusion or inclusion?” was a basic theme of the last
volume of Good News in 2012. It contained an interview
with Ljuba Václavová, a documentarist, who has been
interested in threatened children for her whole life. She
was also a member of the Foundation’s Board of directors. The director of APPN – a career counselling agency
for deaf and hard of hearing people Marie Horáková
informed about integration of the deaf, in other words
about three-dimensional language without words.
Good News continued in the regular sections of the
magazine presenting donors whom we thanked for their
support, people who work for the Foundation and events
organised by the Foundation.
The magazine was sent to 2,000 addresses; text was
written by Monika Granja and volunteers Zuzana
Hanušová in collaboration with Irena Šatavová. Editing
was done by Elena Hornová. The authors of graphic
design were volunteers Pavel Cindr and Lukáš Fritz.
