» The Liberec area
A Nordic beach on the square in Liberec
Summer in the square in front of the Liberec town hall will be brightened
up by a Nordic beach. You can look forward to palms, a bar and
a beach just like on the island of Usedom, for example. There will be an
accompanying program, which will entertain all age groups, six days

» The Jablonec area
Jablonec celebrates 150 years
The most significant date celebrated by Jablonec this year will be the 150th
anniversary of the town being raised to the status of a town, but the 660th
anniversary of the first mention of the settlement dating from 1356 or
the 110th anniversary of the awarding of the right to have a town coat of
arms in 1906 are also worthy of attention. The organisers of a number of
cultural, sports and cultural events will remind the inhabitants of Jablonec
and visitors to the town of these historical events. As well as these
traditional celebrations, Jablonec is also getting ready for its very first beer
festival, a rock festival and a number of lectures and exhibitions in the
town’s streets. A special section has been dedicated to the anniversary at
www.mestojablonec.cz and at Jablonec 150 on Facebook.
» The Frýdlant area
New information centres in the Frýdlant area
This June will see the introduction of two new information centres to the
Frýdlant area in the summer tourist season. There will now be information
centres in Nové Město pod Smrkem and at the Frýdlant Château Brewery
alongside the existing ones in Frýdlant, Lázně Libverda and Hejnice.
» The Tanvald area
The reconstruction of the locomotive shed at Kořenov has been
completed
The newly reconstructed locomotive shed at Kořenov will be officially
opened on 2nd July within the framework of the nostalgic train rides
on the rack and pinion railway. The building was seriously damaged in
January 1987 when the roof caved in under the weight of the snowfall
and buried two rare rack and pinion locomotives under snow and
debris. Luckily, the locomotive shed dating from 1902 and one of the
locomotives have been able to be preserved and this has meant that the
Rack and Pinion Railway Museum will be expanded by further exhibits
and facilities. As well as the special trains on the Rack and Pinion railway,
including trains with a steam locomotive, you can also look forward to
other accompanying programs on this special day. Come and pay your
respects to one of the most significant technical monuments in the Jizera
Mountains.

I am a grandmother.
You have no idea what that does to a person.
Fate and my daughter have given me a granddaughter, Klára.
I call her Rabbit and I do things with her which I have never done before.
During this year’s Easter, I even took the day off and went on a trip with
Rabbit, her mother and my mother, i.e. Rabbit’s great-grandmother, and
Hugo the dog.
We set off to the Josefův Důl Reservoir, because Rabbit still has small
legs and she does not particularly like being pushed in the pushchair.
A wide road leads from the “Chapel” (“U Kapličky”) car park at Hrabětice
to the dam. Thereafter, a comfortable trail continues and it is possible
to go to Kristiánov, the Lexa Monument or the Blatný Fishpond or
elsewhere.
Except that Rabbit’s legs are small and great-grandmother was cold.
So we only went to the dam and gazed at the water, part of which was
still in the grasp of ice. It was beautiful there. The sun shone golden on
the cerulean blue sky and everywhere was peaceful and quiet, because
Rabbit and I get up early, before all the other hikers. The quiet was only
interrupted by the calls of an enormous flock of siskins on the beech
trees in front of the dam building and also by the wind which blew with
an intensity which we do not experience in the valley. It blew so hard
that it eventually drove us away.
It did not matter a bit. It was time for Rabbit’s sleep and I had to finish
lunch.
On the way back, I said to my granddaughter and her mother and her
great-grandmother that the Jizera River has seven other reservoirs and
I made an oath that we would make a trip to each of them, as well as
one to the aforementioned Blatný Fishpond which is admittedly not
a reservoir with a dam, but was the first artificially built water retention
basin in the Jizera Mountains which was built in 1780 so that its water
could power a saw mill.
Rabbit magnanimously approved and her mother and greatgrandmother were pleased to accede. Hugo the Dog really did not mind
one way or the other. All he is really interested in is the various scented
messages left for him by other dogs. And he really does not care, if he
finds them next to a reservoir or elsewhere …
So, just so you know. We will go to the reservoirs at Souš, Bedřichov,
which includes the Rudolfov power station next to nearby Fojtka,
to Mlýnice, to Harcov and in summer we can swim in Mšeno and in
autumn we have to go and see the “Breached” Dam. Not only because
it will be 100 years since it ruptured, but also because it is at its prettiest
in autumn.
And we absolutely will not mind, if we meet you there. Because there
is enough space for everybody and all of these reservoirs are well worth
a visit.

Sightseeing trains
The Harrachov Sightseeing Train
The Harrachov sightseeing train will once
again be in operation from 1st May. The
train always departs from the Novosad
a syn glassworks at 10:00 am and at
1:00 pm and sometimes also at 3:00 pm
depending on visitor numbers.
The trip lasts approximately 1.5 hours,
but this may change according to the
circumstances. It includes a 20-minute
break at the Mumlava Waterfall, where
there is also the opportunity to take
refreshments at the U Lišáka cabin.
Later, the train passes through the centre
of Harrachov and there is a second
10-minute stop at the top of the ski jump
stands. This offers a wonderful view of all
of Harrachov and of the huge Mammoth
ski jump.

excursion train.

In all other cases, the tariff and contractual transport
conditions published by BusLine, a. s. (www.busline.cz)
apply. All of the buses wait a maximum of 10 minutes
for the arrival of the train.

Passengers can also use public transport route 18 in the
section between Liberec, Fügnerova and Bedřichov. The
integrated IDOL tariff and the IDOL contractual transport
conditions (www.iidol.cz) apply on the route.
Passengers who take a bicycle with them in the vehicle as
luggage must place it on the prepared holder according
to the driver’s instructions. The maximum number of
transported individuals with bicycles is 19. Passengers
are obliged to adhere to any special transport instructions
placed inside the vehicle. Bus 101 in the direction of
Jizerka waits in Bedřichov for bus 540395/101 from
Liberec (departure from Liberec, Fügnerova at 9.35
am) – passengers only pay the fare for the person when
entering the bus (the fee for the bicycle/luggage/animal
will be recognised from the bus from Liberec). The IDOL
does not apply on the route; the price is according to
the pricelist designated by the transporter. LIBNET+,
LIBNET5+, LIBNET Kolo and the all-day ticket for bicycles
issued according to the IDOL tariff are recognised.

contractual travel conditions apply on the route. The ticket
price on the route includes the transportation of 1 pair of
skis or 1 snowboard or 1 sledge (www.iidol.cz). THE RADIO
BUS: The entry onto buses in the Radio Bus mode must
be ordered on the telephone number stated in the route’s
notes. Inform the driver when you wish to disembark.

places in the Jizera Mountains have been equipped with
small, freely accessible metal plaques. After finding all
the plaques, tracing them onto the flier and handing
it in at one of the information centres, the successful
competitor will be given a gift – a glass coin from Izerína
the Fairy. The flier is available at all of the information

Smrk
The Jablonec Bike Park Mountaineering and climbing walls

It is no longer necessary to introduce the Singletrack
under Smrk to most cyclists. Many people have already
travelled down its narrow trails winding down the slopes
of the majestic and mysterious Smrk massif and they
frequently return to this addictive experience. The infinite
descents which bump and wind between trees will
manage to bring a smile to the face of everybody, from
small children up to highly physical and technical bikers.
The Singletrack under Smrk was established as a result
of inspiration from similar projects in Great Britain and
from their fascinating atmosphere and rich community
life. It represents an interesting and highly accessible
opportunity for spending leisure time and for active
movement in the countryside for all generations of
cyclists. There is no need to worry that you cannot
manage the ride on the singletrack; just come and try
it. All you need to know is how to stay on your bike.
The tracks are best suited for mountain bikes (if you
do not have your own one, it is possible to hire one at
the Singletrack Centre). No other equipment, other than
a helmet and gloves, is necessary.

A unique bike park with a four-cross trail known as
the JBC Bike Park was established at the Dobrá Voda
ski area in Jablonec nad Nisou in 2012. The four-cross
trail is not only used by professional riders, but also by
beginners. It contains a lot of interesting elements such
as the wall ride, the rock garden, the forest section or
a number of diverse jumps and turns. There is are no
fixed opening hours. The bike park is for those who don’t
mind pedalling uphill and it is open at all hours. It is also
possible to arrange the operation of the ski lift with the

The Libverda Bike Centre is one of the three points of
entry onto the singletrack under Smrk. This facility,
which is not only for bikers, lies at the beginning of
the spa town of Lázně Libverda in the direction from
Hejnice, in the vicinity of one of the most attractive
parts of the tracks on the Hejnice Ridge. The Bike Centre
offers top-of-the-line full suspension bicycles for testing
from May to November. It also provides high quality
servicing, wheel washing, sales of cycling accessories
and bike clothing, social amenities including showers,
a left luggage office, a lot of parking spaces in a fenced
car park, refreshments and seating in the pleasant
environment of the centre or the outside terrace. The
centre also offers accommodation with tips for the most
suitable recreation facilities for cyclists. Tired cyclists
can also use an entire range of curative and relaxation
procedures at the local spa after a tiring day of sport.
The Mountain Rescue Service station is part of the
Libverda Bike Centre.

The Ještěd Bike Park
The bike park was established nine years ago as the
first official location where visitors can enjoy adrenaline
and fun on mountain bikes. Since 2007, the chairlift has
also carried cyclists to Skalka, at whose upper terminus
several terrain cycling trails start. Visitors can choose
from circuits designed for mountain and trekking bikes
or can try out the more technically demanding freeride
tracks which offer a number of artificial and natural
obstacles. The bike park’s offer also includes training
jumps, a pump track or bicycle hire and servicing.

Where it is possible to drive in the Jizera Mountains and where is it
prohibited
When visiting the Jizera Mountains, you should
know that it is prohibited to drive off the roads and
thoroughfares or to park a motor vehicle or a caravan
outside the designated areas when in the Jizera
Mountains Nature Reserve. From the point of view of the
most visited and most sensitive part of the mountains,
i.e. the forested mountain plateau, the ban also applies
to the entire territory including all special purpose forest
roads. It does not, however, apply to forestry vehicles, fire
engines or the mountain rescue service and so on and
you may come across such traffic in the mountains. Trail
groomers which groom the cross-country skiing trails
are able to drive in the mountains on the basis of legal
exemptions, but may only do so only conditionally and
on defined routes.
Forest tracks are usually equipped with a “No Vehicle
Entry” sign and a barrier. However, even if there is no sign
or barrier or if the barrier is open, this does not mean
that it is possible to drive on the track.
We therefore advise everybody who is entering the Jizera
Mountains by car or using any other motor vehicle to pay
attention to the road signs and to use the official parking
sites at the starting points to the central sections of the
mountains which are located at Bedřichov, Hrabětice,
Josefův Důl, Albrechtice v Jizerských horách, Bílá Desná,
Souš, Polubný and Jizerka on the southern side of the
mountains and at Oldřichovské sedlo, Ferdinandov,
Bílý Potok pod Smrkem, Smědava and Nové Město pod
Smrkem on the northern side of the mountains.
There is also limited parking at Nová louka (but not
along the road leading to it). The car parks are well
marked, for example, on the mapy.cz website and on
hiking maps.
On the other hand, it is not permitted to drive and park
at places such as Kristiánov, Mariánskohorské boudy,
the Breached Dam or other attractive sites in the central
section of the mountains.
The traffic ban also applies to the handling areas
alongside the roads and local thoroughfares, such as next
to the road leading through Oldřichovské sedlo, from
Horní Polubný via Jizerka or the Souš road alongside the
Souš Reservoir (also according to the Water Act in the
water reservoir’s 1st protection zone).
The ban is not there for its own sake.
The Jizera Mountains are a very popular
destination and the unauthorised traffic:
» disturbs or kills the wildlife, for example birds during
the nesting season and as a result of direct collisions
with animals
» can lead to collisions with walkers or cyclists visiting
the mountains
» gives rise to the risk of accidents and the pollution of
the soil in an especially protected area
» bothers people and animals with noise and exhaust
gases
Driving and parking are not only limited by the Nature
and Landscape Protection Act, but also by the Forest Act
and by the Water Act in the case of the 1st protection
zone of hydro-engineering structures.
We would therefore like to take this opportunity to
request you not only to respect the law, but especially to
request you to show tolerance towards the other visitors
to the mountains and especially to their denizens from
the world of flora and fauna who are completely helpless
in face of motor vehicles.
Drivers who breach this ban will be subject to a fine for
committing a misdemeanour.

Peat bogs – islands of the north in the Jizera Mountains
Where did the peat bogs in the Jizera
Mountains come from?
They formed at favourable sites; around springs, in
depressions and on the impermeable bedrock between
the forests which arose after the last Ice Age in the
territory of the former Nordic tundra. Plant species
which can now be regularly found in Scandinavia have
remained here since that period. Long before the arrival
of people in the Jizera forests, the peat bogs hidden in
the forests and protected against external influences
occupied a much greater area than they do today.
The Jizera Mountains peat bogs include so-called upland
bogs, for which the mountains provide ideal conditions:
» an undulating, highly positioned surface (with an
altitude above 800 metres) with flat peaks and
shallow valleys which are typical for the Jizera
Mountains
» poor in nutrients, acidic soil created by the breakdown
of the granite mountain rock
» exceptionally large amounts of groundwater bubbling
up onto the surface in a dense network of springs (the
outflow of water from the mountains is 6x greater
than the average for the Czech Republic)
» high rainfall (up to 1200 mm per year) and frequent
fog and significant air humidity (dew, hoar frost).
Peat bogs are established in such environments from the
dead parts of peat moss and other plants decomposing
without the presence of air in the lower layers (an
average speed of 1–2 millimetres a year). The living
part of the peat moss grows constantly, while the lower
matter dies off and forms layers which are several metres
deep. Some peat bogs are only fed by rainfall, while
others are also fed with surface and ground water.

only arose in the last millennium.
Why are they so rare?
They are the most natural and untouched areas of the
Jizera Mountains, but for all that many of them were
destroyed in the past either directly by drainage or
indirectly by means of the construction of forest tracks
in the vicinity, the deforestation of the environs and
desiccation. Despite that, a number of rare plants and
animals have been preserved in them and they now
represent unique islands of Nordic nature in Central
Europe.
In 2012, a large part of the Jizera Mountains peat
bogs were incorporated into wetlands of international
significance known as Horní Jizera within the framework
of the so-called Ramsar Convention (The Jizera Peat
Bog, the Jizerka Peat Bog, the Black Pond (Černá jezírka),
the Fish Meadows (Rybí loučky), the Kleč Meadows
(Klečové louky), U Posedu, Na Knajpě, the Wolf Meadow
(Vlčí louka) and Na Čihadle). As such, they have been
included alongside, for example, the Třeboň Fishponds,
the Camargue in France or Lake Titicaca.
Peat bogs are the landscape’s memory; their layers have
preserved plant pollens throughout the thousands of
years of their existence and it is possible to ascertain
from them that hazelnuts, lindens and oaks grew here
especially requires significant peace and quiet in winter
and during the breeding period. It is gradually leaving
the high-traffic peat bogs and looking for more peaceful
areas in less forested areas.
What grows there and what lives on them?
The main plant is peat moss which is known to have
tens of species, albeit that only a few of them grow in
the Czech Jizera Mountains. Peat moss is capable of
collecting a large amount of water within its body and
it is actually the best of all the mosses at doing this.
We also regularly come across it in waterlogged areas
outside peat bogs.
However, the most interesting plant species are those
which are rare in our latitudes: the bog cranberry bushes
with pink-red flowers and red berries or bog rosemary
which looks like a miniature rhododendron, the rare wild
rosemary with its spicy aroma and white flowers and
the delicate black crowberry with its round black fruit.
The carnivorous common sundew plant which catches
insects in its leaves is a symbol of the peat bogs, while
the cotton grass which covers large areas like a white
carpet is also impressive.
Peat bogs are usually inhabited by a large number of
invertebrates; the most attractive, for example, include
dragonflies, beetles or butterflies. Vertebrates are most
commonly represented here by birds which require clear
treeless areas and a calm environment. The common
snipe or the rare Eurasian crane nest in the peat bogs
after their return from their wintering grounds in Africa.
Nowadays, the black grouse, one of the protected species
in the Jizera Mountains Bird Sanctuary, is a significant
peat bog species. It seeks out open areas with sparse
tree growth and abundant food in the form of various
berries and buds. The grouse winters over here and it
Where can we find them?
The most valuable peat bogs are protected in the Jizera
Peat Bog and Jizerka Peat Bog national nature reserves,
the significance of which extends beyond the borders
of the Czech Republic. The extensive Jizera Peat Bog lies
on the border with Poland, it is closed to walkers and it
is one of the few remaining peaceful areas in the highly
popular Jizera Mountains. The Jizerka Peat Bog covers
the area at the spring of the Jizerka River above the
settlement of the same name and it is open to hikers via
a plank path and a platform with a view of the Viewing
Meadow (Vyhlídková louka) with its small lakes and the
dominant feature of Bukovec in the background.
Other significant peat bogs are also protected as nature
reserves and natural monuments. Here are but a few
examples. The very old Černá jezírka Peat Bog lies at the
spring of the Beautiful Stream (Krásný potok) under the
Český vrch peak and its northern section is traversed
by a red-marked hiking trail. The Kleč Meadows at the
spring of the Bílá Smědá River between Smědavská
hora and the Jizera can be visited using a plank pathway
with a view of Mount Jizera. The Na Čihadle peat bog is
located at the watershed on the spring of the Jedlová
a Černý potok streams near a well-known hiking trail
intersection and it is easily accessible along a groomed
trail which leads to a peat bog lake – the largest natural
body of water in the Jizera Mountains can be seen from
above from a wooden lookout point (the fencing is
used as protection against wild animals and not against
visitors). The New Meadow (Nová louka) Peat Bog with
peat which is up to 4.5 metres deep was intensively
drained in the past and it is gradually drying out.
There are also two living peat bogs outside the reserve
with limited access. Despite significant damage by land
reclamation, areas with the common sundew have
been preserved on the Červený Potok stream, above
the Josefův Důl reservoir. It is possible to see a small
lake between Holubník and Ptačí kupy with similar
vegetation in its environs to that in the peat bog at
U Širokého kamene near Bedřichov.
Despite the fact that you would only expect to find peat
bogs on the mountain plateau of the Jizera Mountains,
peat bog meadows are also located at lower levels, for
example at Malá Strana or on the Quiet River (Tichá
říčka). However, that is part of a different story – the one
about the Jizera meadows.
What is harmful to peat bogs?
In the past, peat bogs were admittedly feared places
shrouded in many legends and ghostly stories, but for
all that people made as much use of them as possible.
Peat was extracted on the Small Jizera Meadow (Malá
jizerská louka) in the Jizera Mountains for the purposes
of the spa at Lázně Libverda until 1965 – the scars
have gradually healed over. During the course of the
19th century, peat was also cut at the Klikvov Meadow
(Klikvova louka) near Bedřichov – there is no longer any
sign of the fishpond which was created at the extraction
point and drove the local grinding plant.
A far greater impact was caused by the land reclamation
ditches which cut through many peat bogs due to
the drying out of the soil and the improvement of the
conditions for cultivating spruce plantations. This led to
the destruction of a number of small peat bogs which
were not protected by law, but even the larger and more
valuable peat bogs (for example the Jizera and Jizerka
Peat Bogs or the Nová Louka Peat Bog) were not left
untouched by drainage.
Deforestation in the second half of the twentieth century
also destroyed the peat bogs, especially in those places
where the forest was felled right up to the edge of the
peat bog meaning that the moors were not protected
against the desiccating wind and there was nothing
to prevent the removal of snow or to slow down the
spring thaw.
Many denizens of the peat bogs have been harmed
by the excessive visitor traffic – disruption during the
nesting period and when leading young from the nest
and in winter when they need to save their energy.
They often do not have anywhere to escape in the Jizera
Mountains.
What is beneficial to peat bogs?
Peat bogs benefit from raised groundwater levels, but
the protection of the surrounding forest growth, the
removal of non-original dwarf mountain pines from
artificial plantings and non-forestation are also of
importance. It is best not to intervene wherever the peat
bogs are in good condition. The rare bird inhabitants
benefit from a peaceful environment without any
excessive disturbance.
Things began to change for the better at the beginning
of the new millennium. Inspired by the example of their
colleagues from the Bohemian Forest, Jizera Mountain
conservationists started building dams on the deep land
reclamation ditches in the most valuable sections of the
peat bogs. After thorough preparation in 2009, the first
47 wooden dams raised the water level in the ditches
in the Jizerka Peat Bog and slowed it down. Surfaces
with an increased water level began to grow over with
peat moss more quickly, the water flowed more slowly
and this enabled the renewal of the living part of the
peat bog. Three years later, two hundred dams had been
established in the Jizera Peat Bog and the construction of
others in the Nová Louka Peat Bog is planned for 2016. It
would seem that this step is gradually bearing fruit.
The fact that we are healing the peat bogs means that
we are not simply saving a unique environment for rare
flora and fauna, but we are also returning their ability
to retain water during heavy rains and to slowly release
it during times of drought, which is something that the
people living under the mountains are sure to appreciate.
Moreover, a further bonus involves the good feeling
that comes from preserving wonderful pieces of nature,
as well as their mystique and inaccessibility. It is often
better to remain on a comfortable track than to sink in
a deep peat bog.

The thematic educational Craft Trail in Poustka
u Frýdlantu
“The educational trail leads from your house
to us.”
The trail through the peaceful countryside above the
Smědá River is lined with statues of craftsmen who
depict the Story of the Construction of a Rural House
in the minds of the visitors. The statues are made of
wood, stone, metal and fireclay and they are located
along the trail, between the pastures. The trail has eight
stations which will take you through historical contexts
and points of interest concerning the individual crafts.
Each statue includes playful elements and offers creative
enjoyment for small and big visitors alike. The Craft
Trail includes eight symbolic incentives to enhance the
experience of the trail and eight quiz questions for your
enjoyment. Heeding the incentives and giving some
well-chosen answers may earn you a surprise at the
end of the trail.
Our house at the end of the trail includes the Na Bidýlku
ceramic craft studio where visitors can become
acquainted with the production of pottery or buy a pot.
We invite families, individuals and groups of pre-school
and school children to travel along the educational trail,
to visit the studio and to make their own pots.

have maintained the joy of creating items and have faith
in their abilities. We are ceramic craftspeople and so we

The Harcov Reservoir (My všichni školou
povinní)
The series My všichni školou povinní, filmed in
1984, follows the life stories of pupils, teachers
and their families, who are all brought together by
one school. Jirka Oliva and his brother Luboš, Jitka
Povejšová, Barča Hrdinová and Jolanka and Jindra
Jokl are the series’ young protagonists. Mention
should also be made of their parents and teachers:
the popular teacher Mr Lamač (Jiří Sovák), the
school principal (Věra Galatíková), the nervous
teacher Mrs Hajská (Gabriela Vránová), the new
teacher Mr Michal Karfík (Miroslav Vladyka), the
Pioneer leader Jana Vychodilová (Veronika Žilková)
and the teacher Mrs Zmatlíková (Dana Medřická).
The Harcov Reservoir and halls of residence appear
in the opening scenes where the new teacher Mr
Karfík is walking along the dam: Mr Lamač later
gives his younger colleague advice by the reservoir
and Michal Karfík also promenades there with Jana

The grammar school students from the film Prima
sezóna enjoy winter fun at the museum, while Danny
Smiřický (Petr Kroutil) tries to find out from Marie
(Andrea Elsnerová) why she is angry with him in the
episode called Zimní příhoda. Jára Cimrman enters
the North Bohemian Museum, alias the Patent Office,
to present the telephone, cinematograph, fuse, light
bulb, battery, dynamo and electricity meter for patents
in the film Jára Cimrman ležící spící, nebo také pozdě
přicházející. Of course Bell, Lumier and Edison were all
quicker. Cimrman finally finds success with his two-piece
swim suit.
The Liberec Town Hall (Obsluhoval jsem
anglického krále, My všichni školou
povinní, 3 sezóny v Pekle, Dobrodružství
kriminalistiky)
The neo-renaissance building of the town hall dating
from 1888–1893 has enchanted more than one
filmmaker. It can be seen in the series My všichni
školou povinní. The town hall became the venue for
the marriage of Jan Dítě (Ivan Barnev) and Líza (Julia
Jentsch) in the film Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále,
while the view of the F. X. Šalda Theatre as the border
zone between the Russian and American sectors of the
town can be seen in the film 3 sezóny v Pekle about
an extravagant young man who experiences a youth
full of love, passion, revolt and hate during the period
of the waxing communist regime. The Dobrodružství
kriminalistiky detective series also includes the view
behind the town hall in the episode Bertillonáž (the
scene with the news vender and the scene when the
anarchist Ravachol places the explosives in the pram).
The railway station (Obsluhoval jsem
anglického krále, 3 sezóny v Pekle, Poslední
cyklista, Krev zmizelého)
The young Jan Dítě begins his “career” in the film
Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále by selling parks at the
railway station. The railway station, transformed in the
film to play the role of the Vienna station, also appears in
the film 3 sezóny v Pekle. The railway station experiences
a tragic scene when it becomes the venue, from where
the Germans deport the Jews to the concentration camp
in Terezín. This is also the fate of the Orenstein family
with little Klára in the film Poslední cyklista and Doctor
Blau (Martin Huba) in the film Krev Zmizelého. After
his return from the camp, Helga (Vilma Cibulková) is
deported to the Reich.

The Breached Dam is 100 years old
This year, one hundred years will have passed since the
catastrophe on the White Desná caused by the breach in
the former dam which occurred on 18th September 1916.
For 67 people, this meant the loss of that which is most
valuable, while the survivors suffered great hardship
and the prospering town experienced a fatal disaster.
This catastrophe influenced the construction of similar
hydro-engineering structures for decades to come. The
reservoir is unique in Europe: it is the only earth dam in
Europe to have breached for technical reasons. (PHOTO
1) The dam served its original purpose for a mere 10
months and the reservoir did not even have time to
completely fill (it was only approximately ¾ full at the
time of the catastrophe). However, it has now been
a hiking destination for a full 100 years.
The “Renewal of the Breached Dam Cultural Heritage
Site” project was established in 2013 at the instigation
of Mr Jaroslav Zeman, a senator in the Parliament of
the Czech Republic and the Mayor of the Municipality
of Albrechtice v Jizerských horách, with the aim of
supporting tourism. The Town of Desná joined this
initiative and it was also supported by the entire Tanvald
Micro-Region. The Czech Forest Company (Lesy ČR),
the Elbe Catchment Board and the Nature Reserve
contributed to its realisation. The goal of the project
was to rid the Breached Dam of self-seeded trees and
in doing so to open up an unrepeatable view of the
remains of the former dam. (PHOTO 2) Other work
involved the reinforcement of the stone sections, the
installation of information signs, the construction of
a safe new footbridge across the White Desná and also
a shelter for walkers at the site where the Krömer Hut
once stood. (PHOTO 3, 4) Footpaths have been created
along the dam and an educational trail has been
established. It leads from Desná to the Breached Dam
area. A wooden bell tower was installed in the centre
of town (created within the framework of the Desná
wood carving festival) with a mark indicating how
high the water rose at the time of the catastrophe and
a sign pointing towards the educational trail. (PHOTO
5) The trail includes information panels at staggered
intervals with texts in four languages (Czech, German,
Polish and English). The educational trail leads from the
centre of Desná along the road to the boulder with the
memorial plaque in Desná I, behind the kindergarten
in Malá Strana, back to the road in front of the bus
turning point and up to the former water treatment
plant and then upstream to the area of the Breached

knowledge of the local flora and fauna via the interactive
educational signs installed by the Czech Forest Company.

will be established directly in the area of the reservoir.
The program for the renewal of this cultural monument
and its immediate environs is in accordance with the
long-term program for the development of tourism
in the Tanvald Micro-Region and the development of
tourism in the Liberec Region. The project is intended
to make the aforementioned locality more attractive
and to increase tourist interest in this part of the Jizera
Mountains. Celebrations will be held at the Breached
Dam on Sunday, 18th September 2016. They will
recall the unhappy event, but at the same time will
also become an opportunity for the official opening
of the facility as a significant tourist destination. This
will include a mass for the departed, the consecration
of a monument to the victims, but also a number of
other activities. The Breached Dam need not only be
a sad memento, but its area is also expected to become
a popular tourist destination, a meeting place and
a place for rest and quiet reflection.

Dam. The first information panel is therefore in the
centre of the town at the beginning of the educational
trail. It acquaints walkers with the tragedy on the White
Desná in brief: in words and photographs. The second
panel is located behind the kindergarten and visitors
can view period photographs of the buildings after
the tragedy along with explanatory notes on it. The
third information panel has been installed behind the
bridge (before the return to the road) and it provides
information on the cascades in the White Desná in the
form of photographic documentation and a short text.
The fourth panel is located at the bus turning point and
it provides information about a further point of interest
which connects Desná and Albrechtice: the Marian
Stairs (Mariánské schody). The next section of the trail
(between the former water treatment plant and the
Breached Dam) includes 3 prepared rest places with
views of the wild river bed and the option of testing your

The Breached Dam – the historical context
The reservoir on the White Desná (nowadays known
as the Breached Dam area) was built together with the
Souš Valley Reservoir as part of a hydro-engineering
system. The design project was drawn up at the
instigation of the Water Cooperative in Dolní Polubný
with the participation of Professor Dr Otto Intze. The
design engineer was Ing. Wilhelm Plenkner. Construction
commenced on 17th October 1911, less than two months
after the commencement of the construction on the
Souš Reservoir. Both hydro-engineering structures were
connected by a 1104.8 m long tunnel with a longitudinal
gradient of 1%0. It was supposed to be used to transfer
water from the reservoir on the White Desná to the Souš
Reservoir. Both reservoirs were given final approval for
use on the same day – 18th November 1915. The dam
on the White Desná breached exactly ten months later.
The volume of water in the reservoir was 290,000 m3,
meaning that it was up to three-quarters full (its total
capacity was supposed to be 400,000 m3).
The first leak was noticed at 3:30 pm on 18.9.1916
(about a two centimetre trickle). By 3:55 pm, the water
was already pouring through strongly. At 4:15 pm, the
tiles on the upstream side began to subside and the
dam breached completely at 4:45 pm. The water gushed
down a 40 m wide rift and took everything in its path
with it. The dam lies in the cadastral territory of the
Municipality of Albrechtice v Jizerských horách, but the
consequences of the breach were mainly catastrophic for
the area of what is now Desná I.
The reservoir’s planned technical parameters:

height above the terrain: 14.6 m, width at the crown:
5.2 m with an elevation of 1.6 m above the highest
water level in the reservoir.
» The reservoir volume: 400,000 m³
Note!
It is prohibited to ride motorcycles to the Breached Dam.
Likewise, it is also prohibited to stop or park your vehicle
anywhere in the 1st Protection Zone of the Souš Water
Reservoir (in accordance with the “Water Act”). This is
apparent from the traffic signs placed throughout the
entire section from Souš to the intersection with the
Barracks Trail (Kasárenská cesta).

This special guided tour of the centre of Liberec, on
which children and their parents will learn many points
of interest from the city’s history, is an original way to
spend a Friday evening. During the tour, you may come
across the town hall knight, who occasionally walks
around the square. If he is in a good mood, you may
even be able to take a picture with him. He even has
a small gift for clever children who pay attention to the
information provided during the tour. The tours take
place from 6:00 pm every Friday from July to August
during the summer holidays and the meeting point
is at the City Information Centre in Liberec. The tour

The newly built chalet will mainly serve hikers and
cyclists, as was previously the case. The interior
construction work is currently underway. The date of the
final approval for the use of the restaurant and viewing
terrace is still expected to be in autumn 2016.
“The completion of the chalet’s exterior is fully
dependent on the weather conditions. However, we
expect that the work will be able to be completed within
the planned deadlines. We have been able to install
a new entrance stair to the lookout tower and the tower
will once again be operational from the beginning of
May. We expect that the trees which prevented the
view of the Jizera Mountains will be cut down this year:
the Czech Forestry Company has promised to do so in
order to ensure a full view of the Jizera and Lusatian
Mountains”.

This cycle will enrich the cultural summer in Jablonec
nad Nisou for the ninth year in 2016. Its goal is to grant

Four sacred buildings will open their doors for one day
a week during the summer season, this year from 12.7.
to 31.8.2016. The open churches will be Saint Anne’s
Church, the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and
the Dr Farský Church (all in the centre of town) and, for
the first time this year, also the Church of the Holy Trinity
in Mšeno. (The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
on B. Němcová Square will not be open to the public this
year due to reconstruction work.)
The churches will open their doors to the public every
Tuesday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A popular part of the
cycle includes evening concerts in one of the churches
which always start at 5:00 pm. The concerts are organ
recitals and this year they will include the combination
with other musical instruments or with vocals performed
by excellent musicians. The detailed program will be
published on www.jablonec.com, on posters and on
flyers.
The cycle is organised by the Jablonec Cultural and
Information Centre with the financial support of the
Chartered Town of Jablonec nad Nisou.

The Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross in Frýdlant and its secrets
The Dean’s Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross in
Frýdlant is an increasingly popular tourist attraction.
The church is situated on the banks of the Smědá River,
not far from T. G. Masaryk Square. The construction of
the church was completed in 1551. The interior of the
church includes the tombstones of the last members
of the House of Bieberstein, the gravestone of Frederick
of Redern and the high renaissance burial chapel of
the House of Redern, the most important feature of
the church, which is located on the northern side of
the presbytery. The marble gravestone of Melchior of
Redern, his wife Catherine and their son Christoph can
be found inside the chapel. This is a unique sculpture
from the workshop of Gerhard Heinrich of Amsterdam.
The construction of the gravestone took 5 years and
the material used in the sculpture came from Bohemia,
Silesia and England.
Another no less important monument is the
posthumous portrait of Melchior of Redern. This oil
painting of exceptional dimensions was painted
between 1600 and 1605 on the basis of a commission
from Catherine of Redern, the widow of the imperial
military commander, Melchior of Redern. The painting’s
author is unknown, but he probably came from the
group of artists at the court of Emperor Rudolph II.
This is currently the only such expensive and expansive
posthumous portrait, which is full of so many examples
of symbolism, in the Czech Republic …

Daniel Rezek decided to open the brewery two years
ago, when he was operating a local tourism experience
agency in Zásada. “Originally, I started flying around
Černá Studnice on a tandem parachute, then this was
supplemented with interactive glassblowing and
bead-making workshops, a blacksmith’s workshop and
a guesthouse two years ago. Everything was created
so that I could show locals and tourists that it is not
necessary to travel far to see beauty. At the same
time, I wanted to increase the profile of Zásada and its
environs. The brewery was the last piece in this jigsaw
puzzle,” said the owner.
And what does the REZEK brewery offer visitors? Mainly

traditional recipes. “We bring our own invention, tastes
and aromas to production, which the technology of
small breweries allows. Of course this does not involve
significant differences in comparison with traditional
technology,” explained the brewer. “Moreover, we
have a technical speciality here – a self-service tap.
The organisation of horse trips, farm visits, overnight stays
in agro-tourism.
It is located outside the brewery building and, after
purchasing and charging a card, the customers can pour
their own beer, as much as they want and whenever
they want it.”The entire brewery building provides
disabled access, so the tour of the brewing house, the
fermenting hall and the lager cellar is also open to
individuals with handicaps. The inn seats just under one
hundred guests, which makes it one of the bigger halls

A REGIONAL PRODUCT OF THE JIZERA MOUNTAINS
Products with the “Regional Product of the Jizera
Mountains” label can be found in brownstone
stores, in regular retail chains (especially in shops
selling foodstuffs and beverages), at craft fairs
and farmers’ markets, in the workshops or shops of the producers and also
in certified stores. In order to be certified, the stores have to offer several
products with the label. There are regional stores in Liberec, Smržovka and
Oldřichov v Hájích.
A new round of certification will open for those who are interested in
acquiring the Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains label in autumn
this year. We are sure that the sixth year of certification will help to
expand the extensive group of products which bear this label with further
interesting products.

temporarily closed

The Glassmaking Memorial at Kristiánov will
close its doors to tourists this summer season,
so that they can reopen to reveal even greater
beauty once the extensive reconstruction
work has been completed. The Museum of
Glass and Costume Jewellery in Jablonec
nad Nisou commenced the long awaited
reconstruction of the memorial in April and it
should be completed in autumn.
All of the structural components ranging from the stone
cellars to the timbered section and on to the roof, which
will be covered with traditional wooden shingles, will
be renovated during the reconstruction work. Hygiene
facilities and a refreshment area, which have been
lacking to date, will be constructed and will provide
visitors with the opportunity to enjoy refreshments while
sitting outside on the covered terrace with views of the
surrounding countryside.
The existing exhibition on the history of the glassmaking
settlement located on the ground floor will only
undergo small-scale modifications, but the attic area
will be opened up to the public for the very first time.
“Personally, I am most looking forward to the fun
exhibition in the attic which will mainly focus on families

several thousand people, who are constantly creating
new patterns, shapes and colour combinations.

places associated with the glassmaking tradition in the
Jizera Mountains along the way,” said the author of the
exhibitions and trails, Petr Nový, when explaining their
future form after the completion of the reconstruction
work.
If no unforeseen problems occur during the
reconstruction, visitors to the Jizera Mountains can
also look forward to the reopening of the traditional
Kristiánov autumn fair. “The fair will only be held this
year, if all the work is completed on time. The eventual
date will be stated in the press and on the museum’s
website”, stated the Jablonec Museum’s manager, Milada
Valečková.

The Kristiánov glassmaking settlement
The settlement was established in 1774 by Johann
Leopold Riedel. He fired up the glass kiln for the
first time on Epiphany (6th January) in 1776 and his
descendants operated the glassworks up to 1887, i.e.
precisely 111 years. Initially, they especially produced
goblets and cups made of hollow glass, tankards,
medical bottles, flacons and chandelier hangings, while
the main article in the 19th century was glass pressing
rods, tubes and lampworking rods for the production
of costume jewellery. The settlement’s speciality was
hollow tubes which served as a semi-product for
the production of glass bracelets - bangles. Only one
structure from the former glassmaking settlement has
survived to the present. It is known as the Fox Hut (Liščí
bouda) and it originally served as accommodation for
glassworkers, then later as a pub and a recreational
facility. Nowadays, it is administered by the Museum of
Glass and Costume Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou.
