8. Information on the national higher educational system in the Czech republic
Informace o narodnim vysokogkolskem systemu v Ceske republice
Higher Education Institutions
Higher education institutions form the highest level of the education system in the Czech Republic. They provide accredited degree programmes as
well as lifelong learning programmes. Higher education institutions are either
university-type or non-university-type.
University-type higher education institutions provide all types of degree programmes (bachelor, master and doctoral) as well as related activities in the
areas of research, development and artistic and other creative works. Non
university-type higher education institutions provide mainly Bachelor's degree programmes, but may also provide master study programmes as well as
related activities in the areas of research, development and artistic and other
creative works.
There are public, state and private higher education institutions. The public and private higher education institutions come under the responsibility of
the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, while state institutions (military universities and the police academy) are under the responsibility of the
Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of the Interior. The list is available at

Higher education involves studying within the framework of an accredited
degree programmes in accordance with the curriculum for a given form of
studies. The form of study can be full-time, part-time or distance studies. Admission to a Bachelor's degree programme or to a four-to six-year Master's
degree programme is conditional on completing of comprehensive secondary
education or comprehensive secondary education vocational after 13 years
of study. The secondary-school leaving certificate (maturitni vysvedeeni) is
issued after passing the secondary-school leaving examination. Admission to
oneto three-years Master's degree programmes is conditional on graduating
from a Bachelor's degree programme while admission to a doctoral degree
programme is conditional on satisfactory completion a Master's degree programme.
Higher Education Qualifications
The qualification structure recognises three levels of degree programmes —
a Bachelor's degree programme, a Master's degree programme and a Doctoral
degree programme.
A Bachelor's degree programme (bakahirskj) studijni program) takes from
3 to 4 years (180-240 ECTS credits) to complete. It ends with a final state
examination, which usually includes the presentation and the defence of a Bachelor thesis. Graduates are awarded one of the following academic degrees:
• bakalcir umeni (BcA.) — Bachelor of Fine Arts— in the field of fine arts;
• bakaldt (Be.)—Bachelor in other fields.
The abbreviations of these titles are written before the name.
A Master's degree programme (magisters4 studijni program) involves Ito
3 years (60-180 ECTS credits) of study after Bachelor's degree programme
or 4 to 6 years (240-360 ECTS credits) from the beginning of university
studies. Graduates have to take a final examination and defend a Diploma
thesis. Studies in the field of medicine, veterinary medicine and hygiene are
completed by passing an advanced state examination. Graduates are awarded
one of the following academic degrees:
• in5.,eqr (Ing.) — Engineer in the field of economics, technical sciences and
technologies, agriculture, forestry and in military fields of study;
• iteenfr architekt (Ing. arch.)—Engineer Architect in the field of architecture;
• doktor mediciny (MUDr.)— Doctor of Medicine in the field of medicine;
• zubni Mk& (MDDr.) — Dentist in the field of dentistry;
• doktor veterinarni mediciny (MVDr.) — Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in
the field of veterinary medicine;
• magistr umeni (MgA.) — Master of Fine Arts in the field of fine art;
• magistr (Mgr.) — in other fields.
The abbreviations of these titles are written before the name.
Holders of the academic degree of magistr can take an advanced state examination in the same field of study and to defend a dissertation leading to the
following academic degrees:
• doktor pray (JUDO— Doctor of Laws in the field of law;
• doktorfilowfie (PhDr.) — Doctor of Philosophy in the field of humanities,
teacher education and social sciences;
• doktor pHrodnich ved (RNDr.)— Doctor of Natural Sciences in the field of
natural sciences;
• doktorfarmacie (PharmDr.)—Doctor of Pharmacy in the field of pharmacy;
• licenciat teologie (ThLic.) or doktor teologie (ThDr.) — Licentiate of Theology or Doctor of Theology in the field of theology.
All above mentioned abbreviations of titles are written before the name.
The standard length of a Doctoral degree programme (doktorsk35 studijni
program) is 3 years. Doctoral studies are completed by the state doctoral
examination and the defence of a dissertation. Graduates are awarded one of
the following academic degrees:
• doktor (Ph.D.) — Doctor
• doktor teologie (Th.D.) — Doctor of Theology — in the field of theology.

VysokakolskY vzdelivaci system
Vysoke gkoly piedstavuji nejyyggi Uroven vzdelavaciho systemu v Ceske republice. Nabizeji alcreditovane studijni programy a take celolivotni vzdelavani. Vysoke gkoly jsou univerzitniho a neuniverzitniho typu. Vysoke gkoly
univerzitniho typu mohou uskuteenovat vgechny typy studijnich programa
(bakalaiske, magisterske a doktorsky) a v souvislosti s tim vedeckou a
vYzkumnou, vyvojovou, umeleckou nebo daRi tvarei einnost. Vysoke gkoly

Vysoko§kolske vzcielani se ziskava studiem v ramci akreditovaneho studijniho programu podle studijniho plan stanovenou formou studia. Forma
studia male bYt prezeneni, distaneni nebo jejich kombinace. Piijeti do bakalaiskeho studijniho programu nebo do magisterskeho programu, ktery
nenavazuje na bakalaisky studijni program,je podmineno dosalenim Upineho
stiedniho nebo Upineho stiedniho odborneho vzdelani (maturita). Piijeti do
magisterskych studijnich programa navazujicich na bakalaiske studijni programy je podmineno absolvovanim bakalaiskeho studijniho programu. Piijeti
do doktorskeho studijniho programu je podmineno absolvovanim magisterskeho studijniho programu. Vysoka glcola nebo fakulta male stanovit dai§i
podminky piijeti ke studiu tykajici se ureitych znalosti, schopnosti nebo naapod.
Vysokakolske kvalifikace
Kvalifikaeni struktura rozlfguje to Urovne studijnich programa — bakalaiskY
studijni program, magistersky studijni program a doktorsky studijni program.
BakahifskY studijni program — standardni doba studia je 3 al 4 roky (180—
—240 ECTS kredita). Studium se iadne ukoneuje statni zavereenou zkouglcou,
jejil soueasti je zpravidla obhajoba bakalaiske prace. Absolventiim se udeluji
akademicke tituly:
• bakcdat umeni (BcA.)— v oblasti umeni;
• bakalcit (Bc.)— v ostatnich oblastech.
Tituly se uvadeji pied jmenem.
MagisterskY studijni program trva 1 al 3 roky (60-180 ECTS kredita)
po absolvovani bakalaiskeho studijniho programu nebo 4 al 6 let (240-360
ECTS kredita) v piipacle, kdy nenavazuje na balcalaiskY studijni program.
Stadium se iadne ukoneuje statni zavereenou zkotAlcou, jejil soueasti je obhajoba diplomove prace. V oblasti lekaistvi, zubniho lekaistvi a veterinamiho
lekatstvi a hygieny se studium iadne ulconeuje statni rigorozni zkou'Alcou. Absolventiim se udeluji akademicke tituly:
• in±eqr(Ing.) v oblasti ekonomie, technickych ved a technologii, zemedelstvi, lesnictvi a vojenstvi;
• irdenfr architekt (Ing. arch.) v oblasti architektury;
• doktor mediciny (MUDr.) v oblasti lekaistvi;
• ubni lakar (MDDr.) v oblasti zubniho lekaistvi;
