David Emler
David Emler is a Ph.D. candidate under the joint supervision program between Charles University in Prague and Paris
West University Nanterre La Défense. The topic of his dissertation is “Uses of the Past in France since 1990s”. He
currently teaches at the Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University in Prague. He
worked at the Protocol Department of the Government of the Czech Republic and at the International Department of the
Czech Press Agency. He studied West European Studies at Charles University in Prague and at Sciences Po, Paris.

Slavomír Horák
Slavomír Horák has currently tenure track position as the Research Fellow with the Department of Russian and East
European Studies of the Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University in Prague. He
holds Ph.D. in International Area Studies from Prague Charles University's Institute of International Studies, he also
studied Tourism Management (University of Hradec Králové) or Turcology and History and Culture of Islamic countries
(Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague). His research covers political, social and economic issues in former
USSR, with a particular focus on Central Asia and adjacent regions (Iran and Afghanistan). He turns special attention
on contemporary Turkmenistan. He extensively publishes on informal structures in Central Asian countries, ideologymaking, processes of state- and nation-building as well as conflict resolution in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
He is the author of several books on Central Asian and Afghanistan internal development – Střední Asie mezi východem
a západem [Central Asia between East and West] (Karolinum, Prague, 2005); Rusko a Střední Asie po roce 1991
[Russia and Central Asia after 1991] (Karolinum, Prague, 2008) či Dismantling totalitarianism? Turkmenistan under
Berdimuhammedow (John Hopkins University, Washington, 2009). He wrote numerous articles in Czech, Russian and
English scholar journals (Mezinárodní vztahy, Obrana a Strategie, Politeks, China and Eurasian Forum Quarterly, Central
Asia and the Caucasus, Central Asian Survey, Problems of Post-Communism, OSCE Yearbook etc.). He also produced
several research papers for Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Czech Republic.

Hana Kubátová
Hana Kubátová (1980) is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles
University in Prague. She is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, including the Charles H. Revson
Foundation Fellowship, Marie Curie Fellowship for Early Research Training, Felix Posen Doctoral Fellowship. In the
past, Hana Kubátová was a research fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum, at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Heinrich Heine Universität in Düsseldorf and at the Tel Aviv
University in Israel. She is currently coordinating an international research workshop on the reflection of the Holocaust
in communist Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland for the USHMM. Her first manuscript (You Shall Not Steal! Public
mood and opinion towards the Jewish Question in Slovakia) is under contract with the publishing house Academia.

He currently teaches courses on contemporary West-European history, on interpretations of European history and on
methodology of social sciences at IMS FSV UK (Prague). At the same time, he is finishing his PhD thesis at Geneva
University on „Czech Protestant Milieu 1918-1989“ under the supervision of professor Sandrine Kott.
In his research he focuses mainly on social history of religion in the contemporary Czech context.
He studied history at Charles University (Prague), he holds a DEA from Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales
(Paris) and he is „ancien él?ve de la sélection internationale“ of Ecole normale supérieure (Paris). He also spent
extended research stays at Institut d’etudes politiques (Paris) and Princeton University (USA) where he held a Fulbright
scholarship.
He taught modern Czech history at Rouen University (France) for three semesters. He participated at several research
projects of the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
He obtained several prestigious scholarships in the Czech republic : „Jeune chercheur francophone“ (CEFRES, Prague,
2010), Scholarship of the Jan Hus foundation (2011), Scholarship of František Topič foundation (2012).

Tomáš Nigrin
Tomáš Nigrin studied Area Studies, German and Austrian Studies and Modern History at the Charles University in
Prague, Faculty of Social Sciences (UK FSV) including many study and research stages (Berlin, Düsseldorf, London,
Washington and Boston). He has been employed as an assistant at the Institute of International Studies UK FSV since
2007. He focuses in his research on the development of German politics and society after 1945, on the reflexing of the
historical events in the history school books and on the transport history in Central Europe. He is also a member of
editorial board of the journal Acta Universitatis Carolinae – Studia Territorialia.
Jan Šír
Jan Šír is Research Fellow with the Department of Russian and East European Studies at the Institute of International
Studies of the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He holds a Ph.D. in Area Studies from the Charles
University. In addition, he is Managing Editor of the quarterly Acta Universitatis Carolinae - Studia Territorialia. His
research covers political, security, and energy developments of the successor states to the former Soviet Union, with
a particular focus on Central Asia. He has extensive expertise in applied research, including four research projects
commissioned by the Czech Foreign Ministry. His articles in English, Russian, Czech and Ukrainian have appeared in
prominent refereed journals and volumes, such as Acta Slavica Iaponica, Central Asia and the Caucasus, The China and
Eurasia Forum Quarterly, Perspectives on European Politics and Society, and Politeks – Politicheskaia ekspertiza. He is
co-author of the Silk Road Paper titled Dismantling Totalitarianism? Turkmenistan under Berdimuhamedow (Washington,
DC: Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, 2009).

Eliška Tomalová
Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, she acquired Master diplomas in Western European Studies (2003) at the
Faculty of Social Sciences and in French language and literature at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in
Prague (2003). In her Ph.D. Thesis in International Territorial Studies in Prague (2011) she focused on Public and
Cultural diplomacy. Since 2005 she has been lecturing and pursuing research activities on Foreign policy and European
integration at the Charles University in Prague. She has also been working as a researcher at the Institute of International
Relations in Prague since 2005. Eliška Tomalová has been participating in various international research projects and
conferences (CONNEX, CEEISA) and she had worked and lectured at foreign research centres and universities (Institut
fr. de géopolitique, France, CREEES – Stanford University, USA).
