připadá Vám zimní vydání Pupp Journalu menší, kompaktnější, praktičtější? Neklame Vás zrak ani hmat - na
základě průzkumu mezi našimi hosty jsme se odhodlali k této změně. Přestože formátem je Váš oblíbený časopis
menší, obsahem naopak rozkvétá. Nic na tom nezmění ani nadcházející zimní období. Zima je v Grandhotelu

kommt Ihnen die Winterausgabe von Pupp Journal kleiner, kompakter, praktischer vor? Es täuscht Sie weder der Gesichts- noch der
Gefühlssinn – anhand einer Umfrage unter unseren Gästen haben wir uns zu dieser Veränderung entschlossen. Obwohl von Format Ihre
beliebte Zeitschrift kleiner ist, mit dem Inhalt erblüht sie dagegen. Daran ändert auch nichts die kommende Winterzeit. Der Winter ist im
Grandhotel Pupp immer ein besonderer Zeitraum. Die einmalige Atmosphäre der Hotelinnenräume erheben die traumhaften Berührungen

Dear guests of the Grandhotel Pupp,
Do you find the winter edition of the Pupp Journal smaller, compacter and practical? Both your eyes and your sense of touch serve you
well - we decided on the change on the basis of a survey among our guests. Though your favourite magazine is smaller in size, its content
is flourishing. And the coming winter season cannot change it. Winter is always specific in the Grandhotel Pupp. Dreamlike touches of
the snowy town and the forests above it intensify the unique atmosphere of hotel interiors. And then there are Christmas and New Year’s
Eve celebrations. It is the only season which, apart from relaxation, walks and spa treatments, can be combined with skiing. Sometimes
you can put on cross-country skis right in front of the hotel or in the nearby golf course; however, you can also go on a trip in the neigh

Dvořákův karlovarský podzim
Již po dvaapadesáté vyvrcholila koncertní sezóna hudebním
festivalem Dvořákův karlovarský podzim. V hudební historii
Karlových Varů má dominantní postavení právě Antonín
Dvořák, dne 20.7. 1894 zazněla v Poštovním dvoře kontinentální premiéra jeho symfonie č. 9 Z Nového světa.

Bereits zum zweiundfünfzigsten Mal erreichte die
Konzertsaison mit dem Musikfestival Dvořáks Karlsbader
Herbst ihren Höhenpunkt. In der Musikgeschichte von
Karlsbad hat gerade Antonín Dvořák eine dominierende
Stellung, am 20. 7. 1894 ertönte im Posthof die kontinentale Premiere seiner Symphonie Nr. 9 Aus der Neuen Welt.

mit einem Porzellanund einem altböhmischen Markt
Im September fand der 15. Jahrgang des Festivals statt, das
immer auf die Straßen den Tanz und Spaß bringt. Ihre besten
Musik- und Tanzauftritte führten in Karlsbad nicht nur
Ensembles aus dem Inland vor, sondern auch aus dem weiten Mexiko, Neuseeland, China oder Venezuela. Eine der
Bühnen ist bereits traditionell der Platz vor dem Grandhotel
Pupp, wo das Festival mit dem Porzellanfest verbunden ist.
Karlovy Vary Folklore Festival
The 15th year of the festival, which always brings dance
and joy into the streets of the town, was held in September.
Folklore groups from both our country and far Mexico,
New Zealand, China or Venezuela came to show their best
music and dance performances. One of the scenes is traditionally the space in front of the Grandhotel Pupp where
the Porcelain Festival takes place every year.
The concert season has culminated in the music festival
Dvořák Autumn for the 52nd time already. It is just Antonín
Dvořák that has a leading position in the music history of
Karlovy Vary. His symphony No. 9 From the New World
had its continental first night here on the 20th July 1894.

V září proběhl 15. ročník festivalu, který vždy vnese do ulic

Tento podzimní golfový turnaj se ve svém pátém ročníku
stal již tradicí. Za slunečného zářijového dne se na golfovém
hřišti Golf Resort Karlovy Vary sešli golfisté, aby opět
podpořili projekt Pink Ribbon Golf, který v České republice spolupracuje s Aliancí žen s rakovinou prsu. Startovné ve
výši 40.000 Kč putovalo na konto aliance na podporu boje
s touto vážnou nemocí.

Dieses Herbstgolfturnier wurde in seinem fünften Jahrgang
bereits zur Tradition. An einem sonnigen Septembertag trafen sich die Golfspieler am Golfplatz von Golf Resort
Karlsbad, um das Projekt Pink Ribbon Golf wieder unterstützen zu können, das in der Tschechischen Republik die
Allianz der Frauen mit Brustkrebs unterstützt. Das Startgeld
in Höhe von 40.000 Kč ging auf das Konto der Allianz zur
Unterstützung der Bekämpfung dieser ernsten Krankheit.

This autumn golf tournament, which was held for the fifth
time, has already become a tradition. Golfers met at the Golf
Resort Karlovy Vary on a sunny September day to support
the project Pink Ribbon Golf which supports the Alliance of
Women with Breast Cancer in the Czech Republic. 40,000
crowns from starting fees went to the account of the alliance
to support the fight with this serious disease.

Nejstarší festival turistických filmů Tourfilm přivezl při svém
43. ročníku do Karlových Varů na 600 titulů ze 135 zemí
světa. Hvězdou letošního festivalu byla dr. Charlotte
Uhlenbroek, zooložka a psycholožka, která strávila čtyři
roky v Gombských lesích v Tanzánii studií komunikace
mezi divokými šimpanzi, a pracovala pro televizní kanál
BBC Natural History. Grand Prix Tourfilm 2010 si odvezl
snímek Christmas Miracle in Riga. Festival byl součástí
Karlovarského týdne - celého komplexu akcí týkajících se
cestovního ruchu a lázeňství.

Das älteste Festival der touristischen Filme, der Tourfilm,

The 43rd Tourfilm Festival, the oldest festival of films about
tourism, brought about 600 films from 135 countries of the
world to Karlovy Vary. The star of this year’s festival was
Doctor Charlotte Uhlenbroek, a zoologist and psychologist,
who had spent four years in Gombe rainforests in Tanzania
where she had studied the communication among chimpan
zees and worked for the BBC channel Natural History. The
Grand Prix Tourfilm 2010 went to the film Christmas Miracle
in Riga. The festival was a part of the Karlovy Vary Week,
a whole group of events referring to tourism and balneology.
Setkání prezidentů Višegradské čtyřky
Prezidenti čtyř zemí - Maďarska, Polska, Slovenska a České
republiky se počátkem listopadu sešli v Karlových Varech.
Předmětem jednání, jejichž část se odehrávala také
v Grandhotelu Pupp, bylo hledání společných zájmů, priorit a iniciativ v rámci Visegradské čtyřky. Summit zakončila
jedinečná večeře ve Slavnostním sále, kde se prezidentům
podávalo například consommé z kapouna s lanýžovou
sedlinou či pečená jelení svíčková.

Eurest
Keineswegs zum ersten Mal suchte sich das Grandhotel
Pupp die Gesellschaft Eurest für ihre Jahresveranstaltung
aus. Am Anfang November füllte das Programm dieser
Veranstaltung, der größten Catering Gesellschaft in der
Tschechischen Republik, die Räumlichkeiten von
Grandhotel Pupp. Die Delikatessen des Festabends servierte man dann direkt an der größten Karlsbader Heilquelle, in
der Sprudelkolonnade.

Das Treffen der Präsidenten
der Visegrader Vier
Die Präsidenten der vier Länder - Ungarn, Polen, der
Slowakei und der Tschechischen Republik - trafen sich am
Anfang November in Karlsbad. Das Thema der
Verhandlungen, deren Teil auch im Grandhotel Pupp ver
lief, war gemeinsame Interessen, Prioritäten und Initiativen
im Rahmen der Visegrader Vier zu suchen. Der Summit
endete mit einem festlichen Abendessen im Festsaal, wo
man den Präsidenten zum Beispiel ein Consommé
aus Kapaun mit Trüffeln oder einen gebratenen
Hirschlendenbraten servierte.
Meeting of the Presidents of the Visegrad Four
Presidents of four countries – Hungary, Poland, Slovakia
and the Czech Republic - met in Karlovy Vary in early
November. The subject of their negotiations, whose part
was held in the Grandhotel Pupp too, was looking for
common interests, priorities and initiatives within the
bounds of the Visegrad Four. The summit was closed with
a gala dinner in the Festive Hall where presidents were
served e.g. consommé from capon with truffle liaison or
roast fillet of venison.

Nikoli poprvé si společnost Eurest vybrala Grandhotel Pupp
pro svou výroční akci. Program této události, za níž stojí
největší cateringová společnost v České republice, zaplnil
počátkem listopadu prostory Grandhotelu Pupp. Pochoutky
slavnostního večera pak podávali přímo u největšího karlovarského léčivého zdroje, ve Vřídelní kolonádě.

It was not the first time that the company Eurest chose the
Grandhotel Pupp for its annual meeting. The rooms of the
Grandhotel Pupp were full of visitors who had come to see
the programme of this biggest catering company in the
Czech Republic in early November. Delicacies of this gala
evening were served directly at the biggest Karlovy Vary
curative spring, in the Sprudel Colonnade.
Wolff Ost Reisen
Dlouholetým obchodním partnerem Grandhotelu Pupp na
německém trhu cestovního ruchu je společnost Wolff Ost
Reisen. Z její iniciativy každoročně navštěvují Grandhotel
Pupp skupiny německých turistů, aby zde ochutnaly pochoutky české kuchyně. Ve dnech 4. až 6.11. se zde v rámci této gastronomické akce ubytovalo na 160 hostů.

Wolff Ost Reisen
The company Wolff Ost Reisen is a long-standing business
partner of the Grandhotel Pupp in the German market. It
initiated the visits of groups of German tourists to the
Grand hotel Pupp who come every year to taste the delicacies of Czech cuisine. About 160 of those taking part in this
gastronomic event found accommodation here between the
4th and the 6th November.

Karlovy Vary a slavný Grandhotel Pupp se mohou pyšnit
hned dvojí návštěvou Roberta De Nira, jednoho z nejuznávanějších světových herců. V obou případech byl hostem
Mezinárodního filmového festivalu - v letech 1990 a 2008.
Jeho druhá návštěva je stále v živé paměti: charismatický
americký herec ozdobil svou účastí slavnostní zahájení filmové přehlídky a převzal Cenu za umělecký přínos světové
kinematografii. Filmový festival byl tehdy zahájen právě filmem Co se vlastně stalo, v němž De Niro hrál hlavní roli.
Ve filmografii newyorského patriota převažují hrdinové
dramaticky vypjatých, psychologicky složitých a temných charakterů. Jen málokdo si nevybaví bravurní výkon ve druhé části trilogie Francise Forda Coppoly
a Maria Puza Kmotr (1974). Vynesl mu i prvního
Oscara. Druhou prestižní sošku ceny Akademie získal za
roli boxerského šampiona v biografickém dramatu
Zuřící býk (1980) režiséra Martina Scorseseho. Právě
setkání s ním je považováno v profesním životě Roberta
De Nira za osudové. Filmy Špinavé ulice, Taxikář,
Mys Hrůzy či New York, New York, které natočil se
slavným režisérem Scorsesem, mu vynesly další nominace i světové uznání. Ale jsou to i další světové režijní
osobnosti, s nimiž spolupracuje. A později se mu daří
vyniknout i v komediálních rolích. Jmenujme Fotr je
lotr či Přeber si to. Na třetí volné pokračování „Fotra“
se můžeme těšit v kinech o Vánocích 2010.
Robert De Niro (*1943 v New Yorku) věnuje velké úsilí
podpoře kulturní scény v New Yorku prostřednictvím své
produkční společnosti Tribeca. Z původního záměru pomoci po útocích na Světové obchodní centrum v roce 2001
obnovit kulturní život na Manhattanu, vzniklo významné
filmařské forum, pomáhající tvůrcům z celého světa nalézt
co nejširší diváckou obec.

mit zwei Besuchen von Robert De Niro prunken, eines der
anerkanntesten Weltschauspieler. In beiden Fällen war er
zu Gast des Internationalen Filmfestivals – in den Jahren
1990 und 2008.
Sein zweiter Besuch ist stets in frischer Erinnerung: der
charismatische amerikanische Schauspieler schmückte mit
seiner Anwesenheit die feierliche Eröffnung der Filmschau
und übernahm den Preis für den künstlerischen Beitrag der
Weltkinematografie. Das Filmfestival war damals gerade
mit dem Film Inside Hollywood (What Just Happened?)
eröffnet, in dem De Niro die Hauptrolle darstellte.
In der Filmografie des New Yorker Patrioten überwiegen
Helden mit einem dramatisch gespannten, psychologisch
komplizierten und dunklen Charakter. Kaum jemand erinnert sich nicht an die bravouröse Darbietung in dem zweiten Teil der Trilogie von Francis Ford Coppola und Mario
Puzo Der Pate (1974). Sie brachte ihm auch den ersten
Oscar. Die zweite Prestigestatue der Filmakademie bekam
er für die Rolle des Boxchampions in dem biografischen
Drama Wie ein wilder Stier (1980) von Regisseur

Kryoterapie
Lázeňské centrum Pupp Royal Spa vám nově nabízí další
léčebně rehabilitační metodu kryoterapii. Léčba mrazem je
moderní procedura, která si v současnosti díky mnoha probíhajícím klinickým studiím neustále rozšiřuje indikační škálu
onemocnění, u kterých může být využit její léčebný efekt.
Jde o unikátní metodu celotělové chladové léčby, využívající extrémně nízkých teplot kolem minus 160 °C. Dvou až
tříminutový pobyt v kryokomoře s následnou pohybovou
aktivitou má vynikající analgetický, protizánětlivý a regenerační efekt, vede ke zlepšení imunity, sexuální apetence,
fyzické a psychické odolnosti.
Chlad je starý léčebný prostředek proti bolestem a zánětům.
Využití působení chladu na celé tělo se ukázalo jako velmi
vhodná metoda při řadě terapií. Hluboký mráz člověku neublíží, protože vzduch v kryokomoře je absolutně zbaven

another therapeutic and rehabilitation method - cryotherapy. Treatment with extreme cold is a modern method which
has constantly been extending its indication range of diseases which can make use of its curative effects thanks to clinical studies which are being carried out.
Es handelt sich um eine einmalige Methode der Ganz
körperkältekur, die extrem niedrige Temperaturen um die
minus 160 °C verwendet. Der zwei- oder dreiminütige Aufent
halt in der Kryokammer mit folgenden Bewegungsaktivität
hat einen ausgezeichneten analgetischen, entzündungshemmenden und regenerativen Effekt, der zur Verbesserung der
Immunität, der sexuellen Appetenz, der physischen und der

It is a unique method of treatment of the whole body which
uses extremely low temperatures of about 160 °C. A two- or
three-minute stay in a cryogenic chamber followed by exercise has an excellent analgesic, anti-inflammatory and regeneration effect and improves immunity, sexual appetite and
physical and psychical resistance.
Die Kälte ist ein altes Heilmittel gegen Schmerzen und
Entzündungen. Die Nutzung der Kälteeinwirkung auf den
ganzen Körper zeigte sich als eine sehr geeignete Methode
bei einer Reihe von Therapien. Der Tieffrost schadet dem
Menschen nicht, weil die Luft in der Kryokammer völlig
ohne Luftfeuchtigkeit ist. Nach der Kryotherapie ist intensive Bewegung erforderlich. Das ist der markante
Unterschied zur Sauna, nach der Ruhe und Erholung
empfohlen werden.
Die Kryotherapie ist bestimmt für:

Osudy hotelu Pupp začala na sklonku 19. a počátkem
20. století stále výrazněji určovat nesmírně aktivní pátá
generace rodinné dynastie, Antonovi synové Julius a Karl
s bratrancem Theodorem, synem Julia seniora. Je třeba
zdůraznit, že Puppové nebyli jen úzce zahledění do své
firmy. Kromě hotelového a restauračního podnikání
se v Karlových Varech aktivně účastnili občanského,
společenského a politického dění.
15. září 1900 přijel do Karlových Varů z léčení
v Mariánských Lázní na první krátkou návštěvu perský šáh
Musaffer-eddin. Perský monarcha z Teheránu povečeřel
v Grandhotelu Pupp. Podruhé pak přijel roku 1902, kdy se
ubytoval v hotelu Savoy-Westend. Tento nesmírně bohatý
orientálec fascinoval obyvatele Karlových Varů svými
vášnivými nákupy drahých šperků, skla, porcelánu, krajek,
prádla a dalšího luxusního zboží. Za svého karlovarského
pobytu v roce 1902 utratil jen za nákupy celkem 750 000
franků, což bylo pohádkové jmění.
Dne 17. srpna 1904 přijel na oficiální jednodenní návštěvu
Karlových Varů rakouský císař František Josef I. Přicestoval
dvorním vlakem z Mariánských Lázní, kde prodléval
u rodiny Metternichů. Karlovarští připravili monarchovi

velkolepé přivítání: ulice lemovaly špalíry svátečně
oblečených lidí a celé město bylo vyzdobeno slavobranami.
Majitelé Grandhotelu Pupp Heinrich Pupp junior, Karl
Pupp a Julius Pupp junior jej u fontány před svým hotelem
osobně uvítali a darovali mu velikou kytici. V Puppu byl
na počest nejurozenějšího hosta ve velkém jídelním sále
připraven slavnostní oběd pro dvě stě osob. Po obědě
si císař odpočinul v nejluxusnějším hotelovém apartmá
a k večeru téhož dne vlakem zase odcestoval.
V roce 1903 začaly odklízecí a demoliční práce ve dvorním
traktu Grandhotelu Pupp, aby zde bylo vytvořeno místo
pro nové hospodářské budovy a zejména pro stavbu
Slavnostního sálu. Tato impozantní stavba na místě někdejší
první dřevěné a poté druhé litinové kavárny byla provedena
v rozmezí let 1905-1906 nákladem 1,5 milionu rakouských
korun. Velký koncertní sál získal kapacitu 1500 osob.
Slavnostní otevření se uskutečnilo 26. května 1906.
Roku 1907 (24. a 31. srpna) opětovně pobýval v Grand
hotelu Puppu při svých dvou krátkých návštěvách
Karlových Varů také anglický král Edward VII. Pokaždé
přijel z Mariánských Lázní, kde se léčil a hrál golf. Traduje
se humorná historka o tom, že Edward VII. v Karlových
Varech jistým nedopatřením „vynalezl puky“ na pánských
kalhotech. Příběh o králových roztržených nohavicích
byl oblíbenou anekdotou českého spisovatele a novináře
Vladimíra Škutiny. K vynálezu puků prý došlo takto:
Když anglický král Edward VII. v roce 1907 přijel do
Varů, bydlel samozřejmě u Puppů. Odpoledne před
slavnostní večeří v Puppu, jíž měl předsedat, se šel projít
do blízkého lesa. Přitom si nóbl pán roztrhal nohavice,
což bylo s ohledem na blížící se dinner velmi žinantní. Aby
zjednal nápravu, král spěšně vtrhl do nejbližšího krámku
s oblečením na Staré louce. Na regále spatřila Jeho Výsost
sloupec pánských kalhot. Angličan č. 1 dlouho neváhal
a rychle si vybral nové kalhoty. Vysokou návštěvou
samotného krále překvapený majitel krámu chtěl dlouhým
ležením zmačkané kalhoty vyžehlit, leč král to z nedostatku
času odmítl. Navlékl si pomačkané kalhoty a odkvačil
do Puppu, kde pronesl slavnostní projev ke karlovarské
high society. Při jeho řeči Karlovarští žasli, zejména pak
dámy, neboť viděly, že panovník hrdého Albionu má

na kalhotech vpředu a vzadu jakési podivné klikaté čáry
a rýhy. Něco takového ve světaznalých Karlových Varech
ještě neviděli. Nikdo z přítomných se však neodvážil v této
věci něco zeptat. Druhý den uspořádal karlovarský starosta
v Puppu na počest anglického krále snídani. A hle - všichni
karlovarští pánové se ve Slavnostním sále objevili s lépe či
hůře nažehlenými puky na svých kalhotech. Když se jich
král zeptal, jaké že to mají na sobě komické nohavice, bylo
mu řečeno, že Karlovarští v žádném případě nechtějí zaostat
za posledním výkřikem anglické módy, který jim včera Jeho
Veličenstvo předvedlo.

Das Schicksal vom Hotel Pupp begann am Ende des
19. und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts immer deutlicher
die überaus aktive, fünfte Generation der Familiendynastie
zu bestimmen. Antons Söhne Julius und Karl mit ihrem
Cousin Theodor, dem Sohn von Julius Senior. Man muss
betonen, dass die Pupps nicht nur ihre Firma im Auge hatte.
Außer dem Hotel- und Restaurantunternehmen nahmen sie
aktiv am bürgerlichen, gesellschaftlichen und politischen
Leben in Karlsbad teil.
Am 15. September 1900 kam aus der Kur in Marienbad
zum ersten kurzen Besuch der persische Schah Musaffereddin nach Karlsbad. Der persische Monarch aus Teheran
aß im Grandhotel Pupp zu Abend. Das zweite Mal kam er
dann im Jahre 1902, als er im Savoy-Westend-Hotel wohnte.
Dieser steinreiche Morgenländer faszinierte die Einwohner
von Karlsbad mit seinen leidenschaftlichen Einkäufen
von teueren Schmuck, Glas, Porzellan, Spitzen, Wäsche
und anderen Luxuswaren. Während seines Karlsbader
Aufenthaltes im Jahre 1902 gab er nur für die Einkäufe
insgesamt 750 000 Franken aus, was ein märchenhaftes
Vermögen war.
Am 17. August 1904 kam zu einem offiziellen eintägigen Besuch
der österreichische Kaiser Franz Josef I. nach Karlsbad. Er reiste
mit dem höfischen Zug aus Marienbad an, wo er bei der Familie
Metternich weilte. Die Karlsbader bereiteten dem Monarchen
einen großartigen Empfang vor. Die Straßen säumten festlich
gekleidete Menschenmengen und die ganze Stadt wurde mit

Pupp, Heinrich Pupp Junior, Karl Pupp und Julius Pupp
Junior begrüßten ihn persönlich am Springbrunnen vor ihrem
Hotel und schenkten ihm einen großen Blumenstrauß. Im
Grandhotel Pupp wurde zu Ehren des höchsten Gastes im
großen Speisesaal ein festliches Mittagessen für 200 Personen
vorbereitet. Nach dem Mittagessen ruhte sich der Kaiser in
dem luxuriösesten Hotelappartement aus und gegen Abend
reiste er mit dem Zug ab.
Im Jahre 1903 begannen die Abräum- und Abrissarbeiten
im Hoftrakt des Grandhotels Pupp, um hier Platz für neue
Wirtschaftsgebäude und vor allem für den Aufbau des
Festsaales. Dieser imposante Bau, an Stelle des einstigen
ersten, hölzernen und dann des zweiten, gusseisernen Cafés
wurde in den Jahren 1905-1906 in Kosten von 1,5 Millionen
österreichischen Kronen durchgeführt. Der große Konzertsaal
hatte eine Kapazität von 1500 Personen. Eröffnung des
großen Festsaales fand am 26. Mai 1906 statt.
Im Jahre 1907 (24. und 31. August) wohnte im Grandhotel
Pupp während seinen zwei kurzen Besuchen von Karlsbad
wiederholt der englische König Edward VII. Jedes Mal kam
er aus Marienbad, wo er zur Kur war und Golf spielte.
Man tradiert eine humorvolle Geschichte darüber, wie
Edward VII. im Pupp durch ein gewisses Missverständnis
„Bügelfalten“ an der Herrenhose erfand. Die Geschichte
über die zerrissenen Hosenbeine des Königs war eine
beliebte Anekdote des tschechischen Schriftstellers und
Journalisten Vladimír Škutina. Zur Erfindung der Bügelfalten
sollte es so gekommen sein:

Als der englische König Edward VII. im Jahre 1907 nach
Karlsbad kam, wohnte er selbstverständlich bei den Pupps.
Am Nachmittag vor dem festlichen Abendessen im Pupp,
dem er vorsitzen sollte, ging er in den nahen Wald spazieren.
Dabei zerriss sich der noble Herr die Hosenbeine, was
hinsichtlich auf das bevorstehende Dinner sehr peinlich
war. Damit er es wieder gut macht, ging der König schnell
ins nächste Kleidungsgeschäft auf der Alten Wiese. Auf dem
Regal erblickte Seine Hoheit eine Reihe von Herrenhosen.
Der Engländer Nr. 1 zögerte nicht lange und suchte sich
schnell eine neue Hose aus. Der vom hohen Besuch
des Königs überraschte Ladenbesitzer wollte, die, durch
lange Lagerung zerknitterte Hose bügeln, aber der König
lehnte es wegen Zeitmangels ab. Er zog die zerknitterte
Hose an und begab sich in den Pupp, wo er eine festliche
Rede zur Karlsbader Highsociety hielt. Während seines
Vortrags staunten die Karlsbader, vor allem dann die
Damen, denn sie sahen, dass der Herrscher des stolzen
Albions auf der Hose vorne und hinten gewisse seltsame
zickzackförmig Linien und Rillen hat. So etwas sahen sie
im weltbewanderten Karlsbad noch nicht. Niemand von
den Anwesenden wagte es aber, zu dieser Angelegenheit
eine Frage zu stellen. Am zweiten Tag veranstaltete der
Karlsbader Bürgermeister im Grandhotel Pupp zu Ehren
des englischen Königs ein Frühstück. Und siehe da – alle
Karlsbader Herren erschienen im Festsaal mit besser oder
schlimmer gebügelten Hosenbogen an ihren Hosen. Als
sie der König fragte, welche komische Hosen sie anhaben,
wurde ihm gesagt, dass die Karlsbader keinesfalls hinter
dem letzten Schrei der englischen Mode zurückbleiben
wollen, die ihnen gestern Seine Hoheit vorführte.

It should be underlined, however, that the Pupps were not
focused merely on running their company. Apart from the
hotel and restaurant business, they actively participated in
the community, social and political life in Carlsbad.)
On 15 September 1900, Mozzafar-al-Din Shah of Persia
came to Carlsbad for a short visit while taking a cure in
Marienbad. The Persian Shah dined at Grandhotel Pupp.
He returned in 1902 and stayed at the Savoy Westend
Hotel. The extremely wealthy oriental ruler fascinated the
inhabitants of Carlsbad by purchasing expensive jewelry,
glass, porcelain, lace work, undergarments, and other
luxury goods. During his stay in 1902, he spent a fairy-tale
fortune of 750,000 francs on shopping.
On 17 August 1904, Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria
came to Carlsbad on an official visit. He arrived aboard
his court train from Marienbad where he was the guest of
the Metternich family. The people of Carlsbad prepared an
imposing welcome for the monarch. The streets were lined
with crowds of people dressed in their finest clothes and
the whole town was decorated with festival gateways. The
owners of Grandhotel Pupp – Heinrich Pupp Jr., Karl and
Julius Pupp Jr. – welcomed Emperor Franz Josef I in person
at the fountain in front of the hotel and gave him a large

flower bouquet. A gala lunch for 200 guests was prepared in
honor of His Imperial and Royal Majesty at the large dining
hall of Grandhotel Pupp. After lunch, Emperor Franz Josef I
rested for a while in the most luxurious hotel suite before
departing in the late afternoon by train.
In 1903, demolition and excavation work began in the
courtyard section of Grandhotel Pupp to create space for
new ancillary buildings and particularly for the construction
of the Ceremonial Hall, known at the time as the Neuer
Café, Konzert und Billardsalon. The imposing structure was
built on the site of the former wooden (and later cast-iron)
coffeehouse in the course of years from 1905 and 1906
for 1,5 million Austrian crowns. The capacity of the large
concert hall was 1,500 persons. The grand opening of the
large Festive Hall took place on 26 May 1906.
In 1907 (on the 24th and 31st of August), King Edward VII
of the United Kingdom stayed at Grandhotel Pupp during his
two shorts visits to Carlsbad. On both occasions, His Majesty
came from Marienbad where he was taking a cure and playing
golf. According to a rather humorous story, King Edward VII
allegedly “invented creases” on trousers by mistake. The
story of the King’s torn trousers was the favorite anecdote of
Czech writer and journalist Vladimír Škutina. It is said that the
trouser creases were invented in the following manner:
When King Edward VII of the United Kingdom came to
Carlsbad in 1907, he obviously stayed with the Pupps. In
the afternoon, before a gala dinner at the Pupp, which he
was to chair, the King had gone for a walk in nearby woods.
While walking, the nobleman tore his trousers and this was,
with a view to the upcoming dinner, rather embarrassing.
To remedy the situation, the King rushed into the nearest
clothes shop in the Old Meadow. His Majesty spotted a stack
of men’s trousers in one of the shelves. Without hesitating,
the No. 1 Englishman swiftly selected new trousers. The
shopkeeper, flabbergasted by having such a noble customer,
wanted to iron the wrinkled trousers yet the King rejected
due to lack of time. He put on the wrinkled trousers and
hurried to the Pupp where he gave a speech to the Carlsbad
high society. As the King was speaking, the people of
Carlsbad, the ladies in particular, were confounded when
they noticed bizarre winding creases and lines on the
front and rear of the trousers of the sovereign of proud
Albion. They had never seen anything like that before in
cosmopolitan Carlsbad. None of the present, nevertheless,
dared to ask. The next day, the Carlsbad mayor gave a gala
breakfast at the Pupp in honor of the English king. And lo!
All the Carlsbad gentlemen appeared at the Ceremonial Hall
with more or less successfully creased trousers. When the
King inquired about their rather comical trousers, he was
told that the Carlsbad gentlemen did not want to fall behind
latest British fashion presented by His Majesty himself the
evening before.

Malebné scenérie Dorotiných niv fascinují ctitele přírody již
alespoň 200 let. Je to území mezi Grandhotelem Pupp
a Galerií umění, které získalo jméno podle Dorotina altánku. Zdejší romantické dostaveníčko vody, skal a lesů bylo
samozřejmě odedávna lahůdkou pro umělce a snílky všeho
druhu. Jistě není náhodou, že v údolí Teplé postupně vznikla unikátní přírodní galerie děkovných a oslavných nápisů
vděčných lázeňských hostů. Pro bustu J.W. Goetha nemohlo být vybráno příhodnější místo.
Zamilovaný hrabě Christian Clam-Gallas tu dokonce nechal
roku 1791 vystavět vévodkyni Dorotce Kuronské altán,
v němž si milenci vyznávají lásku dodnes. Je známo, že altánek navštívil svého času i znalec žen Giacomo Casanova.
Již tehdy zdobil vázu stojící v altánu nápis: Ach! Kéž by se
časy minulé mohly stát časem budoucím! Kousek od altánu
vyvěrá také pramen Dorotka (dnes veřejnosti nepřístupný),
který byl již od konce 16. století znám pod označením
Kyselka. Byla zde nejdříve zřízena kamenná sedátka, později i skromné koupelové lázně. Na místě dřevěného mostu
arcivévody Karla z roku 1801 je dnes klenutý most přes
Teplou u rezidenční budovy Slunečných lázní (dříve plynné
a sluneční Lázně VI).

Die malerische Szenerie der Dorotheen Auen fasziniert die
Naturliebhaber mehr als 200 Jahre lang. Es handelt sich um
das Gebiet zwischen dem Grandhotel Pupp und der
Kunstgalerie, das den Namen nach dem Dorotheen-Altan
bekam. Das hiesige romantische Zusammentreffen des
Wassers mit den Felsen und den Wäldern war natürlich seit
je ein Leckerbissen für die Künstler und die Träumer aller
Art. Es ist sicher kein Zufall, dass im Tepltal nach und nach
eine einmalige Naturgalerie von Dank- und Ehreninschriften
der Kurgäste entstand. Für die Büste von J.W. Goethe
konnte man keinen geeignetsten Ort aussuchen.
Der verliebte Graf Christian Clam-Gallas ließ hier sogar im
Jahre 1791 für die Herzogin Dorothea von Kurland einen Altan
erbauen, wo sich die Verliebten die Liebe bis heute bekennen.
Es ist bekannt, dass den Altan seiner Zeit auch der Frauenkenner
Giacomo Casanova besuchte. Schon damals schmückte die im
Altan stehende Vase die Inschrift: Ach! Wenn doch die vergan-

von dem Altan entspringt auch die Dorotheenquelle (heute der
Öffentlichkeit unzugänglich), die bereits seit dem Ende des
16. Jahrhunderts unter der Bezeichnung Sauerbrunnen bekannt war. Es wurden hier zuerst steinerne Sitze errichtet,

Gewölbebrücke über die Tepl an dem Residenzgebäude von
dem Sonnenbad (früher Gas- und Sonnenbad VI).

closed to the public) near the pavilion. It has been known
as the Acidulous Spring since the late 16th century. At first
stone seats were built here which were later followed by
modest baths. There is a vaulted bridge across the Teplá
River and near the residential building of the Sun Bath
(former Gas and Sun Spa Building VI) in place of the wooden Archduke Karl Bridge dating from 1801.
Between the Grandhotel Pupp
and Dorothea’s Meads
The picturesque scenery of Dorothea´s Meads has fascinated lovers of nature for at least 200 years. It is the piece of
land between the Grandhotel Pupp and the Art Gallery,
which was named after the Dorothea Pavilion. The local
romantic rendezvous of water, rocks and woods has always
been a delicacy for artists and dreamers of all sorts. The
unique open-air gallery which contains laudatory inscriptions as well as inscriptions of thanks did not come into being in the valley of the Teplá River by accident. It was
hardly possible to find a more suitable place for the bust of
J.W. Goethe.
Being in love, Count Christian Clam-Gallas had even a summerhouse built here for Duchess Dorotka Kuronská in
1791. Lovers have been declaring their love to each other
here up to these days. It is known that Giacomo Casanova,
a famous expert on women, visited once the pavilion. The

Běžecké trasy?
Stačí si vybrat
Kolo jsme na zimu vyměnili za běžecké lyže. Možností pro
milovníky bílé stopy je v dosahu Grandhotelu Pupp hned
několik. Při dostatku sněhu stačí vyjít na některou z lesních
cest za hotel, nasadit lyže a křižovat lázeňské lesy (1).
Přestože jde o kopcovitý terén, cesty jsou zpravidla vedeny
po přívětivých vrstevnicích. Doporučit lze jistě trasu začínající výjezdem lanovkou do mezistanice Jelení skok
a odsud jen mírně zvlněným terénem přes Myslivnu, lesovnu Diana ke sv. Linhartu a zpět po stejné cestě či jiným
lesním okruhem.
Strojově upravené stopy lze najít v Golf Resortu (2), pár
minut autem od hotelu. Je zde k dispozici několik variant
okruhů s terénem upraveným pro klasiku i bruslení.
Neomezené možnosti pak skýtají Krušné hory (3), z Kar
lových Varů na dohled, vzdálené 30 minut jízdy autem.
Krušnohorská magistrála s přidruženými trasami a okruhy
nabízí 120 km upravovaných tratí různých náročností.
Strojově udržované desítky kilometrů lyžařských stop lze využít
také ve Slavkovském lese - nad Březovou u Sokolova (4),
(20 minut autem) a u Mariánských Lázní (5), (40 minut).

Langlaufloipen? Es genügt, sich auszusuchen
Das Fahrrad hat man im Winter für die Langlaufski gewechselt. Für die Liebhaber der weißen Spur gibt es in der
Umgebung von Grandhotel Pupp gleich mehrere
Möglichkeiten. Wenn es genug Schnee gibt, reicht es auf
einen der Waldwege hinter dem Hotel zu gehen, die Ski
anbinden und die Kurwälder (1) durchqueren. Obwohl
es sich um ein hügeliges Gelände handelt, führen die Wege
meistens auf angenehmen Schichtlinien. Empfehlungswert
ist bestimmt die Strecke, die mit der Auffahrt mit der
Seilbahn in die Zwischenstation Hirschsprung beginnt und
von hier aus nur durch ein wenig gewelltes Terrain über das
Jägerhaus, das Forsthaus Diana zum hl. Linhart und wieder
zurück, entweder den gleichen Weg oder einen anderen.
Maschinengespurte Loipen kann man im Golf Resort (2)
finden, ein paar Minuten vom Hotel mit dem Auto. Es stehen hier einige Langlaufstrecken zur Verfügung, für den
klassischen sowie den freien Stil.
Unbegrenzte Möglichkeiten bietet dann das Erzgebirge (3),
von Karlsbad in Sichtweite, 30 Minuten Fahrt mit dem Auto
entfernt. Die Erzgebirgische Skimagistrale mit den anliegenden Loipen und Rundstrecken bietet 120 km gespurte
Loipen verschiedenen Schwierigkeitsgrades.
Dutzende gespurte Kilometer kann man auch im Kaiserwald

Routes for Cross-country Skiers? Just Choose
You have exchanged your bike for cross-country skiers before
the coming winter. There are several possibilities for the lovers of the white track in the neighbourhood of the
Grandhotel Pupp. If there is enough snow, all you have to do
is to go up some of the roads in the wood behind the hotel,
to put on skis and set off into spa woods (1). Though the
terrain is hilly, the routes usually follow contour lines, which
makes them less difficult. We can recommend the route
which starts with a funicular ride to the station Jelení skok
and continues across just gently rolling terrain past Myslivna,
the Diana gamekeeper’s lodge to St. Linhart. To get back, you
can go the same way or choose some other route.
Machine-kept tracks can be found at the Golf Resort (2),
just a few minutes from the hotel by bus. There are several
round tracks available here which are suitable for both
classical cross-country skiing and skating.
The Ore Mountains (3), within sight from Karlovy Vary
and accessible by car in 30 minutes, offer limitless possibilities. The main track of the Ore Mountains and the routes
and round tracks in its neighbourhood offer altogether
120 km of tracks of different arduousness.
Tens of kilometres of machine-kept track are in the Slavkovský
les Mountains too – above Březová by Sokolov (4),
(20 minutes by car) and by Mariánské Lázně (5), (40 minutes).
Our tip: the Golf Resort is ideal for short trips, the Ore
Mountains with their beautiful scenery for longer trips.
