Don’t Fall Off… Offload The Hazzard The e g Ed Integral Protected Acc DEPLOYMENT 00.00 00.37 01.24 INTRODUCTION In recent times, the climbing of site personnel onto a loaded trailer for the purpose of either manually or mechanically unloading has been identified as an item of unacceptably high risk. This is associated with reported incidents whereby persons have sustained injury either by falling from the vehicle or by being trapped between the load and the fabric of the vehicle. WHAT IS REQUIRED ROMTECH recently identified a market need for an access walkway, integral with the trailer (or rigid vehicle deck), which folds out from the trailer sides and back to provide both an external balustrade, preventing falls and a means of isolating persons on the walkway from the load. ROMTECH SOLUTION Our latest patented product is based on a flat-bed trailer of standard plan dimension, 13.5 m x 2.4 m. It is fitted with a set of folding outriggers down both sides and along the back edge. The outrigger ends are connected to a rigid balustrade which has the facility of rotation about a horizontal axis at these points. In the travelling mode, a system of walkway treads, being hinged to the trailer edge beams is fastened in the upright position against a set of steel posts which are rigidly connected to the trailer edge; there being a steel post at the junction between each tread. The steel posts are approximately 1.0 m in height but can be extended to a height of 2.2 m with a steel insert. On arriving with its consignment, the trailer / tractor unit will park up into the appointed unloading area. The driver will then pull out the outriggers around the locked position. At this point, the balustrade will be in position around the periphery. The next stage is to fold down the walkway treads through 90° one at a time so that these rest securely against the outriggers. The walkway corners are then folded out from the rear platform to complete the continuity of the walkway all the way around the trailer. A short aluminium ladder is secured to the rearmost tread so that persons can safely mount the walkway. At this point, the load is retained by the steel posts which isolate it from the access walkway. A person on the walkway now has a balustrade preventing him falling off the outside edge. With full deployment taking no more than 4 minutes.
