Souhrnná zpráva o hřišti pro rok 2013 Royal Golf Club Marianske
Souhrnná zpráva o hřišti pro rok 2013 Royal Golf Club Marianske Lazne. 6. únor 2013 Start Burridge, přel. P.S. Zdraví hřiště je celkově stále špatné a některá místa na hřišti stále vyžadují hodně práce. Nicméně, kvalita patovacích povrchů se v druhé polovině roku významně zlepšila a všechny greeny vstupovaly do zimy bez nemoci a s plným travním pokryvem. I když některá místa na hřišti nás stále “táhnou dolů” jsem přesvědčen že jsme napříč hřištěm dosáhli různých zlepšení a budeme to dělat i nadále. Momentálně připravuji 5-letý plán správy hřiště, který bude zahrnovat nové drenáže a závlahy, stavbu nových odpališť a rekonfiguraci jezírek. Podařilo se nám v průběhu sezonu provést úspěšné erifikace díky kterým půdní profil odvádí vodu lépe než v minulosti a dovoluje lepší cirkulaci vzduchu. Částečně z těchto dvou důvodů vstupovaly greeny do zimy bez nemoci a s plným pokrytím travou. Pravidelná aplikace písku zaručí konzistentní rychlost greenů a koulivost, a dohromady s vhodným programem hnojení udržíme na greenech plné travní pokrytí. Budeme pokračovat v hnojení greenů kvalitním granulárním NPK hnojivem každých 4 až 6 týdnů. Pro naše greeny je toto nejvhodnější varianta. Kvalitní granulární NPK hnojivo 1 pomůže růstu travní rostliny postupným uvolňováním správné dávky živin v průběhu času. Pokud by živiny byly uvolňovány příliš rychle, došlo by k nárazovému urychlení růstu a zpomalení greenů a zhoršilo by problém plsti.. To způsobuje omezení přístupu světla a k tomu kořeny stromů odvádějí všechnu vlhkost a živiny z travního profilu. K odstranění tohoto problému nám nezbyde než odstranit několik stromů. Navrhuji, abychom provedli zároveň odstranění několika starých stromů a zároveň náhradou výsadbu stejného počtu mladých v jiném místě. 2 Odpaliště a kolory. Mnohá odpaliště a kolory neodpovídají standardu. Proto potřebujeme erifikační program abychom omezili plsť a zlepšili přívod vzduchu ke kořínkům napříš půdním profilem. Rafy Z mého pohledu rafy byly loni velmi nesourodé a nekonzistentní a před zimou vypadaly dost slabě, takže na jaře můžeme očekávat rozsáhlou populaci plevele. Abychom pomohli řešení tohoto problému a abychom celkově zlepšili zdraví rafu, budeme hnojit pomalu uvolňujícím hnojivem hned jak to počasí a stav hřiště dovolí. To způsobuje výrazné opotřebení a vede až k holinám. Nová strojová cesta by těmto problémům v budoucnosti předešla. Prostě protože systém je už starý a protože nemáme úplné pokrytí fairwayí, semirafu a okolí greenů, tyto plochy vysychají a tráva z nich v době teplého počasí mizí. Náklady odhaduji takto: rozšíření závlahového jezírka - 3,000,000 Kč Opravy a vybednění okrajů rybníčků a vodních toků - 1,000,000 Kč Kompletní závlahy – 10,000,000 Kč. Stuart Burridge 7 Golf course report Royal Golf Club Marianske Lazne. 6-2-2013 The general health of the golf course is still poor and there are certain areas of the course that need a lot of work. However the quality of the putting surface did greatly improve in the second half of the year and all greens went into winter disease free and with a full grass cover. Although some areas of the course still let us down I feel we have made improvements across the golf course and will continue to do so. I am now in the process of putting together a 5 year plan for the golf course which will include new drainage and irrigation, new tee construction and Lake Reconfiguration. If the plan is agreed, over the next 5 years you can expect to see some great improvements in course condition and design, improving the playability of the golf course as a whole. This report covers all work for 2013 season and explain what work will be carried out and why. The Greens The general health of the greens improved in the second half of the year. We managed to carry out some good aeration during the season which has meant that the soil profile is draining much better than before and there is now improved air circulation within the soil profile. It is partly because of these two reasons that the greens went into winter disease free and with a full grass cover. This season we must continue with the deep aeration (drill and fill) so the greens continue to drain well. We must also target the large area of thatch at the very top of the profile. This 7cm (average) thatch layer is acting like a sponge and retaining a lot of moisture and nutrients. If the moisture and nutrients stay in the thatch layer then the grass roots will become shallow and weak. If we remove some of that thatch, moisture and nutrients are allowed to flow deeper into the profile and the grass roots in turn follow, creating a healthy grass sward that is strong and disease resistant. It is my aim to aerate the greens in some form every month. One month the aeration will be light (verticutting or scarifying) and will cause little or no disruption to golf. Every second month the plan is to be a little more aggressive, this will however cause some disruption to golf but plenty of notice will be given. This work is vital in improving the condition of the greens and I am confident we will achieve great results. We will continue to top dress greens lightly throughout the year to maintain good levels and a good ball roll. Regular applications of sand make sure green speeds and roll remain consistent and if used in line with a good fertiliser program greens retain a full grass cover. We will continue to fertilise greens with a quality granular NPK fertiliser every 4-6 weeks. 8 For our greens this is the best option. Quality granular NPK fertiliser helps the growth of the grass plant by releasing the correct level of nutrients evenly over a set period of time. If nutrients are released too quickly the flush of growth slows greens speeds considerably and also adds to the thatch problem. On hole number 10 the green has sparse and weak grass growth all up the left hand side of the green. This problem is caused by trees being to big and too close to the green. As a result of this light levels are reduced and tree roots remove all the moisture and nutrients from the soil profile. In order to irradicate this problem some trees will need to be removed. I would suggest that if we remove old trees then we plant new trees elsewhere on a one for one basis. If you look at the photo below you can see how the quality of the green is effected by overhanging trees and tree roots. The surrounds and backs of greens in general are very poor and need improvement. This is all caused by problems with our irrigation system. Where we do not get full water coverage, areas dry out and grass cover becomes sparse. When this happens the playing areas become inconsistent and good shots can sometimes be punished. To try and combat this problem we will aerate the surrounds of the greens on a regular basis. However for this work to be effective the irrigation around the greens needs to be updated so we have complete water coverage. If we do not update the irrigation in some form the aeration work will be wasted. Green surrounds will continue to dry out and the playability will be greatly effected. The photo below right shows green surrounds on hole 16. You can see the bare areas on the backs of the bunkers. Photo on the left shows how the surround should look. 9 Tees and approaches. Many tees and approaches are not up to standard. Some are too wet after rain and are too quick to dry out when warmer weather occurs. Some have drainage problems but all suffer from compaction and a large thatch build up. This needs to be controlled in order to improve the look and playability of the tees and approaches. In order to achieve this we must have an aeration program in place that will remove thatch and increase air flow to the grass roots and soil profile. The plan is to hollow core the tees and approaches at least twice this year and we will look to verticut or scarify on 4 occasions. I do feel some new tees need to be constructed, lengthening the course in places and generally providing more flexibility with tee positions. This is not, however, part of the plan for 2013, this is because we have other problems that take priority and unfortunately we do not have the money to solve all problems at once. We need to work to improve what we have before any new construction occurs. New drainage is needed on some of the approaches, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 13 all have issues that need to be addressed. Some of these areas have existing drainage that is simply not working and needs to be reconstructed this year. When approaches are waterlogged they become soft underfoot and sparsely covered with grass leading to very poor playing conditions and the spread of turf grass disease. We will continue to top dress tees regularly in order to maintain a good grass cover and level playing surface. We will continue using a quality slow release NPK granular fertiliser on all tees and will apply it twice throughout the season. Fairways. At the close of the season all fairways were vertidrained to relieve compaction and increase air flow to the root systems and soil profile. The holes caused by the vertidraining were left open for the winter period. This is to allow for gas exchange, basically bad gases formed when ground is compacted are released and fresh air replaces it. Also when holes are left open water drains down the holes and then freezes in cold conditions. The water then expands as it freezes and forces the ground to fracture creating more air spaces and creating natural aeration. It is my hope that the combination of aeration and the application of sulphate of iron 10 work together to keep disease to a minimum so when the weather breaks in the spring we have a good base to work from. A granular application of slow release fertilizer in spring will help recovery and will continue to supply nutrients for up to 3 months keeping fairways a healthy colour. We will look to apply fertilizer to fairways twice in the season. In several places on the golf course trees are too close to playing areas and this in turn is effecting the qulaity of the golf course. In some cases trees need to be removed and in others we need to regularly cut tree roots. This can be done by machine but this machine needs to be hired or purchased. The cost of purchase is around 250,000 CZK (we are still waiting to hear if hire is available.) Below you can see a photo of hole number 3. Tree roots are taking up all the moisture which is leading to the area drying out and becoming compacted. This is also the case on many areas of the golf course. The Rough. For me the rough was very scruffy and inconsistent last year and went into winter looking quite weak which will result in a large weed population in early spring. To help combat this and add to the general health of the rough we will fertilize with a slow release fertilizer as soon as weather and course conditions allow. We will also apply a selective herbicide to keep weed populations under control. Bunkers. The bunkers are one of the worst parts of the course. The sand levels are inconsistent and sand quality is poor. The drainage does not work and some of the bunker faces are collapsing. All of these problems need to be addressed. The problem is that it will take a long time to construct new drainage re shape and add more sand to all 75 bunkers. During the season our staff do not have time to do this and the course is snow covered or too wet at other times making it very difficult to carry out the work in house. I feel it is best to consult with a specialist company that can help with this matter. I have estimated the total costs of new drainage, re shaping and new sand for bunkers at around 1,000,000 CZK. 11 New path work and machine track. A new path way is needed by the 10th green. The existing path is too close to the green and concentrates all the traffic to one spot which in turn wear out and becomes bare. The new path needs to be installed before the fairway bunker on the left hand side of the hole and track through the trees. Also on hole 10 a new machine track needs to be constructed on the left hand side in the forest. Running from the men’s 16th tee through to the approach on hole 9. The reason for this is green keeper traffic is funneled into only 2 possible locations when travelling down hole 10. This causes these areas to wear out and become bare. A new machine track would avoid these problems in the future. Estimated cost for this work is around 300,000 CZK. The photo below shows an example of the damage caused by all golf traffic being funelled into one area on hole 10. Drainage. New drainage is required in several areas on the golf course, and is also required in the majority of bunkers which remain waterlogged for days if the water is not pumped out. This is a big job which I do not feel can be done in-house. When the weather breaks we will consult with several companies to find the best solution. Drainage is also required on holes 6,7,10,11, and 13. The total length of the drainage required is estimated around 1000m - 1500m and the cost is 220 - 350 CZK per meter. Irrigation. In this report I have already commented on the problems with the irrigation system. The simple fact is the system is very old and because we do not have full irrigation to fairways, semi rough and the green surrounds they all dry out and become sparsly covered with grass during periods of warm weather. Another issue we have is that we cannot store enough water to keep the course irrigated properly. Last year we had a period of 2 weeks without rainfall and after 5 days I had to stop watering the approaches and the tees because we only had enough water to keep the greens irrigated. Considering the small size of the system we have this is really not acceptable. Our capacity to retain more water needs to be increased. We can do this in 2 ways, one is to increase the size (double) of our existing irrigation lake. The other is to reconstruct our existing ponds that supply the irrrigation lake(hole 17 and the chip and 12 putt pond). These ponds should be made deeper and have steep sided wooden banks increasing water volume and improving the look of the ponds. If we were to carry this work out I would reccomend the reconstruction and wooden edging of all ponds and waterways on the course (holes 2,16 and 7). See an example of this in the photo below. This will help to make them look much cleaner and also speed up the maintenance of these areas. The estimated costs are as follows :- Extend irrigation pond – 3,000,000 CZK Ponds and waterway reconfigeration – 1,000,000 CZK Complete irrigation – 10,000,000 CZK. Machinery. The machinery at the golf course is now in need of replacement. This does not have to happen immediately. Myself and Jiri Dvorak have been working together to create a machine replacement plan that could be spread over a 5, 6 or 7 year period but then the machinery lifetime expectation will be overdue and the running cost of machinery will be dramatically expensive and the danger that our golf course will be harmed and damaged will raise. The origional plan we have put together (attached) is spread over 5 years with an estimated 3,000,000 CZK being invested every year. We would first buy machinery to help us with aeration and course improvent such as workman/cushman plus sprayer top dresser and fertiliser applicator and pro core. These machines are needed this year to help get the course back in play as soon as possible after aeration work. We will continue to consult with Ittec, Profigrass and John Deere to get the best possible machines for the best price. Where possible we will test potential new machines side by side to ascertain which is best for RGCML. Estimated cost of new machines for 2013 is – 2,000,000 CZK. Throughout this season we will require dry sand for top dressing. Last year for drill and fill we purchased bagged sand which is an expensive option but considering the importance of drill and fill it was the only option we had. At other times in the year we 13 have purchased dry sand and kept it covered. This did work out ok last year but I feel it would be more ecconomical over a long period to buy a silo. A silo will keep up to 40 tons of sand dry that can be used in drill and fill or day to day top dressing. Estimated cost of silo – 100,000 CZK Comment I have no doubt that we can improve the health and playability of this golf course on our existing budget. However extra investment is needed on the golf course to update existing irrigation and machinery. New investment is also needed for the construction of new tees and new drainage and as I have mentioned in this report bunkers need a lot of work. The simple fact is extra work and extra investment is required and if we don’t do it now we will end up having to do it later possibly at extra cost.
