Grandmaster Kramnik
is in Prague
One of the two very best chess players of nowadays, the 14th World Champion,
Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik arrived to Prague on Monday evening.
He was invited by Prague Chess Society as the principal guest
of the festival ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2008 where he is going to compete
with the best Czech chessplayer, Grandmaster David Navara.
Vladimir Kramnik se narodil v roce 1975 v Tuapse u Černého moře. Šachy studoval v
Botvinnikovo-Kasparovově škole a ve svých šestnácti letech byl po nátlaku Garriho Kasparova zařazen do ruského olympijského týmu. Na své první olympiádě získal fantastických
8,5 bodu z 9 partií, což byl nejlepší výkon na olympiádě.
Postupně stoupal na světovém žebříčku, až se v roce 2000 dostal k zápasu o mistra světa, ve
kterém porazil Garriho Kasparova a stal se 14. mistrem světa historie. Šachový trůn poté
úspěšně obhájil proti Péterovi Lékó v roce 2004 a o dva roky později i proti Veselinu Topalovovi. V roce 2007 uspořádala mezinárodní šachová federace FIDE turnaj o titul mistra světa
(tradičně se o nejvyšší korunu bojovalo v zápasech). Turnaj vyhrál a novým mistrem světa se
stal Viši Anand.
K 1. lednu 2008 se Vladimir Kramnik dostal na první místo světového žebříčku, nyní je na ELO
listině na druhém místě. V říjnu a listopadu bude hrát v Bonnu s indickým velmistrem Višim
Anandem zápas o mistra světa.
Vladimir Kramnik žije v Paříži. V loňském roce se oženil s francouzskou novinářkou Marie
Laure Germon.

A civic association, Prague Chess Society, was founded in 2004 aiming to aid developing chess life and chess
culture in the Czech Republic. It organized a tournament, with the participation of the strongest players in the
history of our country, as well as number of Grandmaster matches for the best Czech chessplayer David Navara.
It brought into the Czech Republic former world champions Anatolij Karpov and Boris Spassky and also the
legendary Grandmasters Andrei Lilienthal, Lajos Portisch, Jan Timman, Vlastimil Hort and Lubomir Kavalek and
also current world top chess players Alexei Shirov, Boris Gelfand, Vladimir Akopian, Ruslan Ponomariov and Nigel
Short.
We published several chess books (two volumes of Fire on Board by Alexei Shirov and Ten Extraordinary Games
by Boris Gelfand). Since 2007 we have been publishing Chess Weekly, which is distributed into e-mail boxes free
of charge. In addition we organized managerial chess meetings and simuls for Czech managers and other VIP
guests.
We support sightless chessplayers, not only financially, but we had organized simul of Grandmaster Navara for
visually handicapped chessplayers. We also try to develop computer program for them for easier reading of chess
diagrams.
