The winter night does not show any signs of dawn yet, but on the top of a small hill, the church windows illuminate the village below and small groups of worshipers are making their way towards the church carrying their lit lanterns. It seems almost like kitsch. Yet many elderly people will still remember the so called Advent “Rorate Mass” which were held early in the morning before the daybreak in the period of Advent. Even nowadays, this custom is still alive in many towns. However, the beginnings of the Advent “Rorate Mass” date as far back as the Middle Ages. The custom of celebrating a Marian mass just before the dawn already known in the ninth century drew on the theme of Mother Mary which underlay the Advent period. The choral repertory was closely related in its nature to the theme of Annunciation – the encounter of Archangel Gabriel with Virgin Mary covered in Lukas’s gospel. The words “Hail Mary, full of grace...” were set to music and the chant Ave Maria was sung as an offertory. However, the name of the Advent Mass of Rorate developed from the introit Rorate celi desuper. The lyrics come from the Book of Isaiah, in which the prophet envisages the arrival of Mesiah in a poetic way: “Let righteousness come down, O heavens, from on high, and let the sky send it down like rain: let the earth be open to give the fruit of salvation.” During the Middle Ages and then in the period of Renaissance the early morning Advent Mass was gradually becoming richer and longer. In Bohemia particularly, the ‘Rorate’ gained substantial popularity and acquired its specific form: from the end of the fifteenth century the choral hymns were supplemented with Latin and later also Czech songs. This procedure is based on an older technique called ‘trope insertion’ when the former songs were extended using different insertions or additions (tropes). In the sixteenth century the Latin plainchant repertory too was supplemented with Czech lyrics. Moreover, many chants received their polyphonic form. Great number of these liturgical chants adapted to Czech language were then included in many renaissance hymnbooks and graduals in the order they came in the different parts of the mass. This recording represents part of the Marian Advent Mass reconstruction and its development from the early Middle Ages until the second half of the sixteenth century. The key motif is represented by Gregorian chants from the Proper of the Mass in the form they appeared in Czech sources. They include the above mentioned Rorate celi (introitus), Alleluia Prophete 9 SGP_Jacob 8.11.11 23:18 Stránka 8 Let’s imagine the following picture: the Czech countryside covered in snow. Next to the Gregorian chant the recording focuses on Czech specific repertory of the Advent Mass of Rorate represented in great number by sacred chants both monophonic as well as polyphonic. In the introit of Rorate we can witness its development and transformation of this chant over the course of the Middle Ages: after the Latin monophonic melody (from Codex Franus) you will hear its polyphonic adaptation followed by a Czech version with inserted verses of sacred chants. We can notice that in spite of all this transformation, all the forms of Rorate are still closely connected to the former choral melody as well as its lyrics. When listening to the CD we can thus wander through several centuries of the music history. David Eben We aim to cover all the typical forms of liturgical chants which accompanied the Advent “Rorate Mass” from the Middle Ages to Renaissance even though we are aware of the limited possibilities of a recording. The dramaturgy follows the structure of a mass, which enables the varied chants to be heard in their former context according to their purpose and order in the service. It was our intention not to reconstruct a particular Rorate Mass from a specific period, as it would significantly narrow the choice. 10 We preferred rather to show the richness of the repertory from the beginning of the fourteenth century until the end of the sixteenth century which ranges from the Gregorian chant to the Renaissance polyphony, from the Latin form up to its Czech one. Most of the Latin as well as Czech pieces in the recording come from manuscripts written in the environment of Czech Reformation which significantly helped to establish the specific form of Rorate chants. The idea of celebrating mass in the mother tongue was born back in the beginning of the fifteenth century. Many years of wars and fights between the Catholics and Reformation were ended by a religious peace concluded in Kutná Hora in 1485 which allowed the implementation of reformation ideas in the religious service. Latin plainchant was being translated into Czech and it was commonly interspersed with Czech songs which were very often a paraphrase to the Latin original. However, Latin continued to be the common language of worship in more conservative parishes of Czech Reformation. The difference between the liturgy of Czech Utraquists (the moderate wing of Reformation) and the Catholic one was very small. The main wave of translating the liturgical books from Latin into Czech came around 1540. This brought forth the great boom of Czech Rorate chants which were sorted by different rites. The “Královehradecký” rite is one of the most significant. It also includes an elaborate illuminated manuscripts which served us as the main sources (Hk II A 13 and Hk II A 11). Liturgical chants in those manuscripts were usually written in a simple monodic form. The opinions on which chant was the most appropriate for a religious service differed a lot even within the parishes of Czech Reformation. The fundamental Reformists refused ornate polyphony as unsuitable for the worship that was meant to be simple and unpretentious. However, the sixteenth century was a period of then popular Franco-Flemish polyphony performed in the more tolerant parishes of Czech Reformation. Chant and polyphony were entrusted to the schola called “literáti” (small male choir). These singing citizens, who were supported by patrons, sang in major town churches. They were in charge of singing during the worship together with the students of the school (pueri chorales) and were supervised by the school cantor. A great number of rich manuscripts were written straight for them. They sang Latin or Czech chants and songs. If they were more skilled and the church allowed it, they performed polyphony too. The folk joined the liturgical singing in some parts of religious service when they sang monodic Czech songs. These are often a paraphrase to the plainchant parts using the same content (e.g. Prose Pán Bůh všemohúcí), so the liturgical singing of plainchant, songs and polyphony at that time formed an organic unity in spite of all the variety and great quantity. We have drawn upon two sources when choosing the polyphony. The first one, the Bene- šovský kancionál (Benešov Hymnbook) is a comprehensive collection of polyphonic adaptations of songs for the whole liturgical year. Several of the songs come from a notable Czech composer of Renaissance period Jan Trojan Turnovský (1550-1606) who was an Utraquist priest. Using polyphonic adaptations from this hymnbook we enriched the former monodic songs in the pieces of Dnes počátek našeho spasení and also in the Prose before the gospel Pán Bůh všemohúcí. Such polyphonic supplement was quite customary in the Czech environment at that time. The second source of Codex Speciálník represents a significant manuscript preserving advanced compositions of European Renaissance of the late fifteenth century. It belonged to Prague Utraquists, who welcomed more ornate aesthetics in liturgy as well as in music. It also comprises an anonymous three-part Advent Mass with some segments citing the former Gregorian chant. The introit of Rorate and Kyrie in our recording comes from this mass. We have chosen three other polyphonic pieces from the same manuscript. Salve mater gracie is a two-part adaptation of an advent song employing lovely consonance. The harmony and counterpoint of the anonymous motet Sicut cedrus remind us of English late medieval music. The motet Imperatrix gloriosa is an excellent piece of polyphony based on the song cited in the upper voice and it represents an advanced composition technique in the repertory of Czech Renaissance music. Jde o již zmíněný vstupní zpěv Rorate celi, Alleluia Prophete predicaverunt, zpěv k průvodu s obětními dary (offertorium) Ave Maria a zpěv k přijímání (communio) Beata viscera. Vedle gregoriánského chorálu je věnován hlavní prostor typicky českému repertoáru rorátních mší, kde se ke slovu dostanou hojně i duchovní písně, a to jednohlasé i vícehlasé. Pokud byli hudebně zdatnější a dovolovalo to též prostředí církve, zpívali polyfonii. Prosa Pán Bůh všemohúcí), takže i přes svou rozmanitost a značnou kvantitu vytvářel tehdejší liturgický zpěv chorálu, písní a polyfonie organickou jednotu. Patřil pražským utrakvistům, kteří byli otevření ke květnatější estetice v liturgii i v hudbě. Obsahuje také anonymní tříhlasou adventní mši, jejíž části citují původní gregoriánský chorál. Z této mše uvádíme introit Rorate a Kyrie. Z rukopisu jsme vybrali ještě další tři vícehlasy. Salve mater gracie je dvouhlasá úprava adventní písně pracující s líbeznými souzvuky. Harmonie a kontrapunkt anonymního moteta Sicut cedrus připomíná skladby anglické pozdní gotiky. And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 16 Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus. Hail Mary, filled with grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Zdrávas, Maria, milosti plná, Pán s Tebou, požehnaná ty mezi ženami a požehnaný plod života tvého Ježíš. 17 Všemohúcí žádúcí, Bože, Otče Svatý. Synu Boží jediný, Jezu Kriste, jenž’s vždycky Svatý. Utěšiteli lidí zarmúcených, velebný a slavný Duše Svatý. The most desirable and the mightiest, God, the Holy Father, the only Son of God, Jesus Christ, eternally Holy. The comforter of mournful people, the sublime and eminent Holy Spirit. The Lord of the masters of heavenly hosts, the heavens and earth are full of your sublime glory. Blessed, magnificent Lord Jesus, the Son of God who was born of chaste Virgin and arrived in God’s name. Let us feast at your table in heavenly joy, let us be redeemed in heaven to behold you there. Fide mens gratissima plaudens iubilavit laudeque dignissima cor tripudiavit.
