-----------------------------------------------------------------Civic association 4AM Forum for Architecture and Media is a meeting point for new
approaches and diverse activities in the field of contemporary arts in Brno, Czech republic.
The 4AM team consists of theorists, architects, artists and specialists on contemporary
audiovisual art and architecture (Mgr. Petra Hlaváčková, Mgr. Šárka Svobodová, Mgr.
Barbora Šedivá, PhD., Bc. Zdeněk Severa, Ing. arch. Jakub Kopec, Mgr. Lucie Valdhansová,
Tereza Rullerová, Vít Musil, Ing. arch. Roman Čerbák, etc.).
The aim of the 4AM association is to create an educational and experimental platform for
contemporary architecture and media art, which is still missing in Brno as well as in the
Czech Republic. The intention is also to offer a open space for information on
contemporary arts accessible to general public via publications, databases, exhibitions and
lectures in space of 4AM kabinet and media lab. It serves as an area for architects and
students and their creative work and experiments within international workshops or
happenings and for other civic associations or organizations focused on city activism and
urban public policy.

KILL YOUR IDOL / ZABIJ SVÉHO FUCHSE: PSYCHOANALÝZA SOUČASNÉ BRNĚNSKÉ
ARCHITEKTURY
17. 1. - 24. 2. 2012
The title of the exhibition is a paraphrase of Freud’s imperative statement “kill your
father”, by which this founder of psychoanalysis illustrated the moment in the
psychological development of a human being influenced by close family and social
relations and ties. According to Freud, healthy personality growth and development is
conditioned by the existence of a substantial father figure – an idol. This figure should be
such a powerful rival that overpowering him must mean strengthening and enforcement
of the son – an apprentice – with the subsequent achievement of independence of such a
son.
The exhibition KILL YOUR IDOL / ZABIJ SVÉHO FUCHSE aims to apply the view and
methodology of psychoanalysis on the process of architectural work of five architects
from the city of Brno and their conscious inclination towards general principles and
patterns. Like in psychoanalysis itself, in the exhibition the most important role is played
by interviews that are structured by identical questions. Those questions uncover the
specific nature of the process of artistic work of each architect, their conscious sources of
inspiration, outstanding personalities of teachers, spiritual idols, relationships to history
and theory of architecture, to art and literature, they touch upon one’s obsession on the
actual buildings and their future and on the possibility and lack of ability to define the
important architectural qualities. The images of actual architectural designs and of the
realized buildings, intertwined with the interviews of the architects, indicate the manner in
which the above reality is demonstrated and the extent to which the general platform is
reflected within the realization of the designs.
The Exhibition KILL YOUR IDOL took place in the Gallery of Architecture/4AM/ in the city of
Brno from January 17 2011 until February 24 2012. The Czech title of the exhibition refers
to the personality of Bohuslav Fuchs who ranked among the most important
representatives of functionalist architecture of the city of Brno and whose buildings have,
similarly to functionalist forms, an unavoidable influence on the architectural works and
design of architects of the city of Brno. The interviews include questions on the specific
aspects of the Brno scene and environment. The architectural solution of the exhibition in
4AM was delivered by Peter Stec, a Slovak architect, who proposed an installation formed
by a grid of conic sanctuaries devoted to individual ateliers, the interior of which referred
to the principles of their artistic and architectural work. For the purposes of 13th Biennale
of Architecture a virtual presentation of the exhibition consisting of video interviews with
the architects will be presented.

4AM / Gallery of Architecture served as an exhibition space and media laboratory where
local Do It Yourself scene will be presented – original student platform Standuino. Its
activities were inspired by the works of musician and FaVU pedagogue Stanislav Filip and
by the specific phenomenon – kludging. In the exhibition, Václav Peloušek and Ondřej Merta
will present a remake of Stanislav Filip’s installation User interface (Uživatelský interface),
they will lead the workshops of making your own sound / video synthesizers and together
with Stanislav Filip, they will lecture a workshop focused on blasting off the transistors
and other electronic components and the physicality of these occurrences. Part of their
author presentation will be also interventions in the public space, establishing of the
pirate television broadcast or the device emitting Standuino platform datasheets into the
universe through photon pulses of wave length 650 nanometers.
„We will construct and introduce prototypes of devices that allow analytical observation of
their digital and electronic principles in the modernistic sense of word, as for example
relation between the carrier (electronics) and the essence (digitality) or analysis of artistkludger gestures. Standa Filip is helping us to put the vision into reality. He is unique
persona in our environment because he has studied physics and he has experience with
constructing musical instruments, so he is able to understand the nature of electronics
and at the same time, he can naturally think about it in the artistic context.“ (Václav
Peloušek, Ondřej Merta)

EXPOSITION OF ONE PROJECT
Duration: May/October 2012
Venue: courtyard of the House of the Kunstat Lords, Dominikánská 9, 602 00 Brno
Starobrněnská 16/18, 602 00 Brno
Number of presentations: 12
The seasonal outdoor exposition presents a selection of realised designs within the
Central European area focused on a younger generation of architects.
Each two weeks a new architectural project is exhibited in a temporary object
in the courtyard of the House of the Kunstat Lords in Brno. The aim
of this exhibition is to reach an immediate contact of the general public with
contemporary architecture and to boost an urban space. The exhibition installation is
used as well as an urban furniture for sitting or a bike stand.
The presentation of each project embraces its genesis from an original idea to its
realisation. Projects are exhibited through a backlit panel and working models.
A part of each project opening is a lecture of its authors, taking place also in the public
space of the courtyard (in case of bad weather in an interior hall).
