Origin of Gymnastics
The sport of gymnastics began with the ancient Greeks, Mesopotamians and
Egyptians. Exercises were performed so they could keep fit for warfare. Gymnastics
was one of the sports of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 and has
been part of every Olympic Games since.
Gymnastics Today
Today, more than 25 million people around the world participate in the sport.
Gymnastics at the Olympic Games
Gymnastics has been included in the Olympic calendar since its inception in 1896. In
Sydney, there will be three gymnastic disciplines: artistics, rhythmic and trampoline.
Trampoline will make its Olympic Games debut at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Trampoline will have two events; men's individual and women's individual.
Women's artistic gymnastics, one of the most popular of all Olympic events, involves
a four apparatus competition. Men compete on six apparatus. Only women
participate in rhythmic gymnastics at the Olympic Games. The discipline was added
to the Olympic program at Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual event being held.
A group event was added at Atlanta in 1996.
A special feature on the gymnastic program for Sydney will be a gymnastics Gala
event. This non-medal event is a spectacular presentation featuring 76 of the world's
best gymnasts including the Sydney 2000 Olympic gymnastic medallists and a
display of all six gymnastic disciplines, including the non-Olympic disciplines and
events.
Gymnastics in Australia
The Australian Gymnastics Union, now the Australian Gymnastics Federation was
formed in 1948. Since then, highlights in Australian gymnastics include a 6th place
finish in the women's team event at the 1991 World Championships and a 7th place
at the 1992 Olympic Games. This was particularly exciting because it was the first
Olympic Games for which Australia had qualified a team.
In April 1994 Australia hosted the Individual World Championships in Brisbane. This
was only the fourth time in the hundred year history of the championships that they
had been held outside Europe. The three previous times they were held in North
America.

Origines de la gymnastique
Les origines de la gymnastique sont diverses. En effet, on en retrouve des
témoignages dans les civilisations de la Grèce Antique, chez les Mésopotamiens et
les Egyptiens. A cette époque, ce sport était pratiqué à titre de préparation guerrière.
La gymnastique est l’un des premiers sports des Jeux Olympiques modernes. Inscrit
au programme à Athènes, en 1896, il été présent à tous les Jeux olympiques depuis
cette date.
La gymnastique de nos jours
Aujourd’hui, plus de 25 millions de personnes pratiquent ce sport dans le monde.
La gymnastique aux Jeux Olympiques
La gymnastique fait partie des Jeux Olympiques depuis 1896. A Sydney, ce sport
comportait trois disciplines : la gymnastique artistique, la gymnastique rythmique et
le trampoline.
Le trampoline a fait son entrée au programme olympique à Sydney, en 2000, avec
une épreuve individuelle masculine et une épreuve individuelle féminine.
La gymnastique artistique féminine, l’une des épreuves olympiques les plus
populaires, comprend quatre agrès, contre six chez les hommes. La gymnastique
rythmique est une épreuve exclusivement féminine et elle a été inscrite au
programme lors des Jeux olympiques de Los Angeles, en 1984. A cette époque,
seule une épreuve individuelle était disputée, la compétition par ensembles n’ayant
été introduite qu’en 1996, à Atlanta.
A Sydney, le Gala a été l’un des moments forts du programme de gymnastique. Cet
événement spectaculaire, qui n’est pas une épreuve à médaille, a présenté 76 des
meilleurs gymnastes au monde - parmi lesquels se trouvaient les vainqueurs des
Jeux Olympiques de Sydney 2000 - dans les six disciplines de la gymnastique, en
incluant celles hors programme.
La gymnastique en Australie
La Fédération Australienne de Gymnastique - anciennement connue sous le nom
d’Union Australienne de Gymnastique - a été créée en 1984. Depuis cette date,
l’Australie a remporté la sixième place dans l’épreuve féminine par équipes lors des
Championnats du monde de 1991, et la septième place aux Jeux Olympiques de
1992. Ce classement souleva beaucoup d’enthousiasme, étant donné que c’était la
première fois qu’une équipe australienne se qualifiait pour cette épreuve.
En avril 1994, l’Australie a accueilli les Championnats du monde en individuel, à
Brisbane. c’était seulement la quatrième fois, en cent ans d’histoire, que ces
championnats étaient organisés en dehors d’Europe, les trois éditions précédentes
s’étant déroulées en Amérique du Nord.

Competition Description

The Olympic gymnastics competition will be held between Saturday 16 September
(Day 1) and Sunday 1 October (Day 16). It will consist of the disciplines of artistic,
trampoline and rhythmic.
Trampoline will be held at the Sydney SuperDome, Sydney Olympic Park.
A maximum of 24 athletes will compete in the trampoline discipline, 12 men and 12
women.
COMPETITION FORMAT
The trampoline discipline consists of an individual competition for men and women.
Qualification Round
All athletes present a compulsory exercise and an optional exercise in this round.
The top eight men and top eight women qualify for the final. Scores from the
qualification do not carry over to the finals.
Final Round
A single optional exercise is performed by each athlete. The athlete with the highest
score in the final is the winner.
RULES OF TRAMPOLINE
The trampoline competition at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games will be held in
accordance with the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Technical
Regulations, Edition 1998, and the Olympic Charter which are in force at the time of
the 2000 Olympic Games.
Pursuant to the Olympic Charter, FIG assumes the responsibility for the technical
control and direction of trampoline at the Olympic Games.
In case of disagreements on the interpretation of the FIG rules, the French version
shall prevail.

Les compétitions olympiques de gymnastique se dérouleront du samedi 16
septembre (jour 1) au dimanche 1er octobre (jour 16). Elles comprendront les
disciplines de gymnastique artistique, de trampoline et de gymnastique rythmique.
Les compétitions de gymnastique artistique et de trampoline auront lieu dans le
Grand Dôme. La compétition de gymnastique rythmique se déroulera au Pavillon 3.
Les deux sites se trouvent dans le Parc olympique de Sydney.
Un maximum de 196 gymnastes, dont 98 hommes et 98 femmes, participeront aux
épreuves de gymnastique artistique.
Un maximum de 24 athlètes, dont 12 hommes et 12 femmes, participeront aux
épreuves de trampoline.
Un maximum de 84 athlètes féminines participeront aux épreuves de gymnastique
rythmique : 24 dans le concours général individuel et 60 (10 groupes de 6
gymnastes) dans le concours général par ensembles.
FORMAT DES COMPETITIONS
Le trampoline est une épreuve individuelle.
Qualification
Tous les trampolinistes devront effectuer un exercice imposé et un exercice libre au
cours de cette épreuve. Les huit meilleurs hommes et les huit meilleures femmes
seront qualifiés pour la finale. Les scores de qualification ne seront pas pris en
compte pour la finale.
Finale
Chaque trampoliniste présentera un seul exercice libre. Le vainqueur sera celui qui
aura obtenu la meilleure note.
REGLEMENT DES COMPETITIONS
Les compétitions olympiques de trampoline aux Jeux de Sydney 2000 se
dérouleront conformément au règlement technique de la Fédération Internationale
de Gymnastique (FIG) publié en 1998 et à la Charte olympique en vigueur au
moment des Jeux Olympiques de Sydney 2000.
En vertu de la Charte olympique, la FIG assume la responsabilité du contrôle et de
la direction techniques des épreuves de trampoline aux Jeux Olympiques de Sydney
2000.
En cas de différend quant à l'interprétation du règlement de la FIG, le texte français
fera foi.
