Rád využívám příležitosti pozdravit všechny účastníky letošní soutěže a poblahopřát oceněným autorům. Z pozice porotce jsem si pootevřel dveře do světa kresleného humoru, který mě přivítal velmi přátelsky a jak jinak než s úsměvem.
Jsem rád, že se město rozhodlo již v roce 1995 spojit svoje jméno se smíchem, humorem a karikaturou neboť odměnou
za to je nám zájem tvůrců z celého světa.
Přejme si proto, abychom si úsměv na tváři udrželi i v mnohdy neveselé a složité současnosti a dokázali se na ni dívat
s potřebným nadhledem.

I would like to take this opportunity to greet all the participants of this year‘s contest and congratulate the winning authors. As a member of the jury I was introduced to the world of illustrated humour which greeted me warmly and with
a smile – how else? I am glad that in 1995 the city decided to associate its name with laughter, humour, and caricature
– the interest of creators from around the world is our reward.
So may the smiles remain on our faces even throughout these often unhappy and difficult times, and may it help us see
them with the right amount of perspective.

Życie to jest teatr…
Zmaganie się z tym tematem pozwala satyrykom rozwinąć wyobraźnię, daje nieograniczone możliwości interpretacji.
Wśród nadesłanych na konkurs prac były dowolne podejścia do tematu, ale i też zawężone do teatralnej klasyki, czyli
masek dramatu i komedii, dosłownych cytatów z Szekspira (Otello, Hamlet) i teatru antycznego.
Wszyscy odgrywamy w życiu jakieś role, jak w teatrze. Balansujemy między jawą a wyobraźnią. Jesteśmy aktorami jednej sztuki, zwanej życiem…
Jedni lepiej, a drudzy gorzej radzą sobie z tą rolą, którą pisze im los.
O czym mogli przekonać się jurorzy…

Life is a theater...
Wrestling with this theme allows satirists to expand their imagination resulting in unlimited posibilities for interpretation.
Among the works submitted for the competition, there were free approaches to the theme, as well as others constrained to classical theater, to drama and comedy masks, along with literal quotations from Shakespeare (Othello, Hamlet)
and ancient plays.
All of us play roles in life, as in the theater. We are balancing between reality and fantasy. We are actors of one play
called life...
Some deal with the roles assigned by fate better than others.

Dramatické téma: Divadlo
„Nenuťte starého psa dělat nové kousky…“, říká stará moudrost a platí to i pro „staré“, rozuměj zavedené a úspěšné
kulturní projekty. I takové, jako je písecké bienále.
Jenže! Tématem 8. ročníku bylo „Divadlo“. A co by to bylo za režiséra, který by nevěděl, že scéna chce občas změnu
a inscenace inovaci!
Letošní ročník pro výstavu nejlepších prací přichystal už třetí scénu (po galerii kina a sále Prácheňského muzea) v nádherných prostorách pod trámy kulturního stánku Sladovna. Jury zde vyzkoušela změny v „prováděcích směrnicích“
hlasování. Místo plných kýblů, s nimiž se dřív porotci vláčeli kolem hlasovacích uren, dostal tentokrát každý už jen tři
kelímky. Inscenace se protáhla - místo společného hlasování chodili porotci se svým pískem po jednom. A sypali do kornoutů dle svého mínění finalové čtyřicítce, aniž by viděli na dno nádob. Jako by se sami stali herci v divadle, které se
na ně smálo z obrázků. Každý získal hlavní roli, a s ní naprostou volnost pro sólovou improvizaci. Nikdo nemohl tušit,
kolik kam nasypali ostatní… Pomalu se odsypával čas představení. Napětí rostlo…
O to větší gradaci měl závěr hlasování! Překvapivá pointa totiž přišla až s úplným koncem - se zvážením poslední urny.
Až do té poslední chvíle nemohl nikdo tušit, pro koho budou navážené gramy písku zlatonosné!
Premiéra se vydařila. Mezinárodní porota se zhostila úkolu zodpovědně. Shoda - převaha písku u prvních dvou prací byla jednoznačná. O dalších místech v pořadí však často rozhodlo jen pár zrnek… Návštěvníci výstavy nejlepších prací
ovšem mají výhodu, že vedle finalových děl tu vidí i spoustu dalších. Mohou si udělat vlastní názor a zvolit své soukromé
vítěze bienále. A posoudit i úroveň výtvarného humoru ve světě. Jen dva Češi pronikli mezi desítku laureátů. Vždyť letos
do Písku poslali práce autoři z rekordních 51 států!

Dramatic theme: Theatre
„Don‘t try to teach an old dog new tricks…“, states the old wisdom, and this also goes for “old”, or long-established and
successful cultural projects. Even for such a project as the Písek Biennale.
But wait! The theme of the 8th year was “Theatre”. What kind of stage producer doesn‘t know that the scene requires
an occasionally change, and that the set needs innovation?
This year‘s exhibition of the best works prepared its third scene (after the cinema gallery and the hall of the Prácheň
Museum) in the magnificent space beneath the beams of the Sladovna cultural stand. It was here that the jury tried out
a change in the “operational directives” of voting. Instead of buckets full of sand which the jurists used to carry around
the voting urns, this time each received only three cups. The inscenation dragged on – instead of voting together, the
jurists walked with their sand one at a time. They poured the sand into cones as per their judgement of the final forty
without even seeing the bottom of the containers. As if they themselves had become actors in a theatre which smiled
at them from the pictures. Each received the leading role and with it, the absolute freedom of solo improvisation. No
one could have known how much sand the others had poured into which containers... The time of the performance was
slowly drawing off. The tension grew...
The closing of the voting had all the greater gradation! The point of surprise came at the very end, with the weighing of
the last urn. Up until the last moment, no one could know whose grams of sand would become the paydirt!
The premiere was a success, and the international jury rose to the occasion responsibly. The consensus – the overbalance of sand for the first two works – was unequivocal. The next places, however, were often decided by only a few
grains... Of course, the visitors to the exhibition of the best works have the advantage of seeing several other works
aside from the final pieces. They may form their own opinion and elect their own private Biennale winner as well as
evaluate the level of illustrated humour in the world. Only two Czechs made it to the top ten laureates – to be sure, this
year saw authors sending their works to Písek from a record 51 countries!

Porota na řádném jednání v Písku dne 4. června 2009 posoudila 606 kreseb od 181 autora z 51 země. Vybrala 40 kreseb pro hodnocení ve finále, které bylo provedeno sypáním písku s tímto výsledkem:
