SEASONAL FLU VACCINATION HELPS PREVENT SWINE FLU AS WELL WITH WINTER COMES THE FLU SEASON – SO GET VACCINATED AND AVOID THE VARIOUS COMPLICATIONS THAT CAN BE BROUGHT ON BY THE FLU. MEMBER OF THE SANTÉ GROUP THE CZECH REPUBLIC IS CURRENTLY SEEING A RISE IN THE REPORTED NUMBER OF PEOPLE INFECTED WITH THE A (H1N1) VIRUS. THE HEALTH MINISTRY THEREFORE RECOMMENDS TO ALL CITIZENS THAT THEY GET VACCINATED AGAINST CLASSIC SEASONAL FLU, WHICH RESULTS IN THE CREATION OF ANTIBODIES AGAINST SWINE FLU AS WELL. SWINE FLU, ALSO KNOWN AS MEXICAN FLU, IS A HIGHLY COMMUNICABLE ACUTE VIRAL DISEASE OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT OF PIGS CAUSED BY TYPE A (H1N1) INFLUENZA VIRUS. IT IS TRANSMITTED VIA AEROSOL, EITHER BY DIRECT INHALATION OR BY CONTAMINATED PARTS OF CLOTHING OR HANDS ON WHICH THE AEROSOL PARTICLES HAVE COME TO REST. Protection against the flu takes effect two weeks after vaccination and lasts for approximately six months to one year. FLU SYMPTOMS Swine flu symptoms do not differ in any way from the symptoms of regular flu. They are: sudden onset, fever, chills, muscle and joint aches, headache, sore throat, fatigue syndrome, hacking cough, nausea, vomiting and sometimes also diarrhea. Incubation period can range from 2 to 8 days, with the infected person being contagious already a day before the onset of clinical symptoms. If you experience any complications or persistent fevers, you should see a physician immediately. FLU TREATMENT Rest in bed, herbal teas, plenty of fluids, administration of antipyretics (fever-reducing drugs). Diet should be light, with a high intake of naturally-occurring vitamins, fruits and vegetables. PREVENTION • Cough or sneeze into a tissue and then throw it in the trash. • Wash your hands frequently, especially after you cough, sneeze or blow your nose. • Refrain from touching your eyes, nose and mouth. It is through these parts that the virus enters the body. • Try to avoid close contact with people who have the flu. • If you do come down with the flu, it is recommended that you stay home so that you do not spread the infection to others. Regular-flu vaccination is an important preventive measure that eliminates this infection with complete reliability. Yet you do not only protect yourself; you protect those close to you as well. For if you are vaccinated, your body can get rid of the flu virus more easily, thus preventing its spread to others. HOW LONG AM I PROTECTED AGAINST THE FLU AFTER VACCINATION? Adults and children older than 6 years of age begin to be protected after approximately 14 days from the administration of the first dose of the vaccine. Postvaccination immunity lasts 6 to 12 months. As the flu virus is constantly changing, it is advisable to get vaccinated every year.
