Fabergè Egg
A legendary golden Fabergè egg was recently found at a second-hand market in the
USA by an unnamed buyer. He didn’t know the real value of the egg but he realised it
was made of gold. He bought it for just $1,300 and wanted to sell it to his neighbour for
only the value of the gold, but the neighbour thought the price was too high. The owner
then decided to break the egg into smaller pieces but fortunately, before he could do so,
the egg opened by accident. Inside, the egg contained a watch, so the owner googled
the name of the watchmaker. He then discovered he had a gem1 made for Russian
Tsar Alexander III in 1887. The egg was last seen in public in 1902 at an exhibition in
St. Petersburg and then it got lost for more than a century. When the shocked owner
learnt this, he took the egg to London, where experts said it was worth $33 million.

If you are a female model and are over 30, start thinking about retirement, or consider
doing what Kate Smith, a famous model, did. At the age of 31 she was too old for the
modelling agencies and almost no job offers were coming. She didn’t want to lose her
job as a model, but she knew she had to do something very quickly. She got her hair cut
short and decided not to use any make-up. And guess what? It worked! Male modelling
agencies started to contact her and give her offers. Now, when she goes to castings for
male models, she shows up in a flannel shirt, jeans, boots and a biker jacket. ‘Men don’t
need to look young and they still get the same money as female models, so I have plenty
of time to continue in my career,’ says Kate Smith.

Disney’s Dress Code1
The Walt Disney Co. has a very strict dress code for everything from hair colour and style
to what jewellery the employees can wear. The only day the employees can ‘break’ the
rules is on the so called ‘casual Friday’. It is the only day in the workweek when women
may wear open shoes, and men may put on jeans and polo shirts, but not open shoes.
Beards and moustaches had not been allowed at the Walt Disney Co. for all men since
1950. However, that was changed a bit in 1989 when the company allowed moustaches.
And now, after nearly 30 years, the Walt Disney Co. has finally allowed male workers to
have short and elegant beards as well.

understood that he didn’t eat meat. But Alex is less tolerant now and says that he doesn’t
want to date meat-eaters any more. It is so much easier when he can taste his partners’
food and they can eat his. He even broke up with a girl because of a slice of ham which
she had eaten before kissing him. Every week he goes to various restaurants where he
meets many girls. Some of them are very attractive, but now Alex can’t imagine kissing
someone who has just eaten a piece of meat.

Wojtek
‘Private1 Wojtek’, the bear who lived with Polish soldiers and helped them fight against
the Germans in the Second World War (WWII) is going to have a statue in Edinburgh,
Scotland, in around 12 months’ time. Edinburgh Zoo is the place where the bear ‘retired’
when the war ended. Soldiers found the bear as a baby in a forest and Wojtek, as they
named him, quickly took on the role of mascot to the Polish soldiers of the 22nd Company.
He became a friend to them, wrestling with the men and entertaining them. However, he
is best remembered for his role in the battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, where he assisted
the Polish soldiers with preparing guns for their colleagues under fire.

Letters...
The lady at the post office smiled as Mr. Farrer put a pile of letters on her counter. She
collected the letters in yellowish envelopes from Mr. Farrer and put a stamp on each one.
She knows why Mr. Farrer, a retired secondary school teacher, came to the post office. He
promised his former students that one day he would send them those letters which they
had once written to their much older future selves in his English classes. David Anardi
and his secondary school classmates had been waiting for more than 20 years to get their
letters back.
And then, a letter arrived just when David Anardi was celebrating his 36th birthday. It was
messily written on a piece of paper. The writing was familiar but still David felt as if he was
reading lines written by a stranger. The letter started: ‘Hey you, good-looking guy, how
is your blonde wife?’ and contained five pages of text. Unsurprisingly, the letter brought
back memories. When it was written, David wanted to play football professionally after
secondary school. Instead, he continued his education at university and built a very
successful career in the steelworks. He also wanted to have four children and was dating a
blonde girl from the same class more than twenty years ago. However, he later married a
brunette from the steelworks who is today the mother of his two boys.
This journey in time was possible thanks to David’s high school teacher Mr. Farrer who gave
students this unusual assignment in one of his English classes. He asked them to write a
letter about their future. After the lesson, he gave each student an envelope and asked
them to put the letter into it and write their name and address on it. Finally, they put all the
envelopes in a special box with a school year on it. Some students didn’t want the teacher
to read their letters and wrote the word ‘private’ on them. The teacher was allowed to
correct only those letters in the box which were not marked by this word.
Up to now, the 72-year-old Mr. Farrer has spent many hours trying to find all the students
who have grown up, moved away from home and married. Scott Fulton, one of the
recipients, said: ‘When I got the letter, I was just feeling grateful. I’m inspired by the
personality of our teacher. He teaches us that a promise mustn’t be forgotten no matter
when or to whom you give it.’ However, not all Mr. Farrer’s ex-students were happy to
receive the letters. Some of them were ashamed about the grammar mistakes they used
to make or even embarrassed by how immature1 they were as teenagers. They said they
would be much happier if Mr. Farrer hadn’t kept his promise.
