V této knize autor diskutuje prehistorickou defensivní architekturu na Krétě. Pod pojmem „defensivní architektura“ se rozumí veškeré
architektonické řešení, které brání nebo alespoň přispívají k větší obranyschopnosti a „vojenské způsobilosti“ jakéhokoli druhu osídlení
nebo budovy. Autor na základě prostudování publikovaných zpráv a/nebo návštěvy několika set krétských prehistorických lokalit
rozlišuje celkem pět typů diskutovaného druhu architektury (ohradní/hradební zdi; věžovité stavby; tzv. guard houses (strážní domy
či pevnosti); tzv. guardrooms (strážní místnosti - strážnice) a úpravy vstupních systémů vedoucí k jejich postupnému uzavírání). Před
prezentací lokalit a konkrétních příkladů defensivní architektury (je jich více než 200) a závěrů autor nastiňuje nejprve historii
výzkumu a diskutuje metodologické otázky.
Tato kniha jasně dokazuje, že během prehistorického období – od pozdních fází neolitu – byla na Krétě obrana vyjadřována také
architektonicky pomocí defensivní architektury. Tento fakt sice odporuje původním a tradičním představám o prehistorii Kréty, ale je
třeba ho brát v úvahu při interpretaci celkového charakteru krétské (mínojské) civilizace. Výpověď fortifikací pomáhá rekonstruovat a
vnášet světlo nejen na krétskou historii, ale také společnost a její proměny.
