INTRODUCTORY WORD
BY petr bříza
Dear participants of the tournament,
fans of youth ice hockey,
let me welcome you to the 5th annual of Jan Marek
Memorial that takes place in honor of a former great
forward, who left during his career a strong mark not
only on Sparta, but also on other Czech and international clubs, and especially on the Czech national team.
I am proud that this significant tournament carries Jan
Marek's name, because through this we remind every
year his legacy.
The Jan Marek Memorial is international youth tournament that hosts top teams on regular basis. I´m glad,
that prestige of this tournament grows year by year
and number of participants grows as well. Ten teams
from Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany,
Sweden and Swiss play this year in Tipsport arena
and Small sports hall.
Tournament of such a scale is not possible to organize
without partners. I am delighted that we are supported
by the city of Prague, the District of Prague 7, other
partners and special sport projects. I would also like to
thank to Sport Holding Prague for invaluable support
of Jan Marek Memorial.
In the end I want to appreciate great job of the whole
organization team. Without the efforts of every one of
them, we could not meet, play great hockey matches
and pay tribute to Jan Marek, who will live forever in
our memories.

In 1907, Strojnický palác was built in the Stromovka neighbourhood, where exhibitions and expos were held. This
tradition continued during the „First Republic“ under the
name „Prague Sample Expos”, which had a big international
importance and took place every year. But in 1948 they were
moved to Brno and the big buildings on the fairgrounds in
Prague were empty and not used for ages.
The 1978 Ice Hockey World Championships were awarded
to Czechoslovakia by the IIHF, but there was a condition – to
have two connected ice rinks. The Czechoslovakian Ice Hockey Association, in cooperation with Prague City Hall, started
to construct a second rink connected to the main building by
a tunnel. That second rink was called Malá sportovní hala
(Small Sports Hall) and still is today.
In December 1952 their reconstruction started, but there
were problems with steel construction. The next plans were
realized six years later and Sportovní hala (Sports Hall) was
finally opened for the first time on March 7, 1962 for ice
shows of the Czechoslovakian figure skating ensemble. On
March 14, 1962, the national figure skating championships
were held there, followed by Sparta's hockey games for 53
years. From 2015 is Tipsport arena, as it is called in these
days, used by Sparta only as practice arena.
The Sports Hall was the main host of the World Championships in 1972, 1978, 1985 and 1992. Czechoslovakian teams
were successful on home ice, winning the gold medal twice,
along with one silver and one bronze. During the 2015 World
Championships in Prague and Ostrava, Tipsport Arena was
an official training centre.
5th year of Jan Marek Memorial
Jan
Marek
Jan Marek was born on December 31, 1979 in Jindřichův Hradec and first aroused public notice in junior
hockey, when he made it to the national junior finals
with local team Vajgar. Despite losing to Slavia Prague,
the quick and smart forward had reason to celebrate
when Alois Hadamczik, former coach of HC Oceláři Třinec, chose him to join the Extraleague club.
After a few years of acclimatizing to professional hockey, his talent finally began to show through in the
2001/02 season, when he played in every regular season and play off game, recording 44 points. However,
that was nothing compared to what he would accomplish the following year. That season, he finished second overall in league scoring with 62 points, trailing
only teammate Richard Král. As well, his 32 goals led
the whole league!
After such a great year, Marek moved to Sparta in the
summer of 2003, where he would once again play under
coach Hadamczik. Midway through his second season
in Prague, he suffered an unpleasant injury, but he overcame that and eventually got used to the hectic lifestyle
of the Czech capital, along with his beloved girlfriend
Lucie. He also became close friends with linemate Petr
Ton, with whom Marek had good rapport both on and
off the ice for three seasons.
Although the 2005/06 season did not proceed very
smoothly, Sparta became champions and Jan Marek
led Sparta to success as the leading scorer of the whole league, while Ton led the league in goals, benefiting
from Marek's great passing abilities.
At age 26, the shy and humble Marek went to play
abroad for Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL. The first
year was a dream, as he scored at a point-per-game
pace and won the championship title. As he continued
to produce over the next few seasons, he became one
of the league's biggest stars and started attracting interest from other clubs.
May 2010 was a great month for Marek. He was named MVP of the previous KHL season and won the gold
medal as a member of the Czech national at the World
Championships.
In July 2011, his and wife Lucie's son Jan Jr. was born
and he desired to be home. Jan decided to play one
last season in Russia, with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, before
returning to Sparta at the end of the season. But fate
intercepted his plans for the future. Marek was one of
the victims of Yaroslavl tragedy on September 7, 2011.
But his legacy lives on through the youth tournament,
which was named in honour of this great hockey player,
the Jan Marek Memorial.
