Petr Franta (foto: Lubomír Fuxa) / Petr Franta (photo: Lubomír Fuxa) architektura Brány města otevřené The town gates opened P řed několika dny jste prezentovali studii nového Horního nádraží v Karlových Varech pro České dráhy. Jak byl tedy tento projekt při- jat? Pozitivně. Alespoň tak soudím z reakcí přítomných zástupců kraje, města i z otázek novinářů. Doufám, že bude následovat i dialog o řešení širšího okolí nádražní budovy. Projekt se nyní projednává v územním řízení, stavba má začít příští rok a dokončena bude v roce 2012. Nádražní budova má tvar fazole – má to technické opodstatnění? His study, from the beginning of the 1980’s, was part of a public discussion and basis for a new port in Montreal. Decade later, he designed the modern departure hall for terminal 1 at the Prague-Ruzyně airport. few days ago you presented the study of the new design for Upper station in Karlovy Vary for Czech Railways. How was this project accepted? Positively, I hope. At least I judge this from the response of the present representatives of the region and town as well as by journalist’s questions. I also hope that this will be followed by a discussion about a design for the wider surroundings of the station building. The project is currently at the stage of planning process and construction is to be commenced next year and completed in 2012. A The station building is of a bean shape – does it have any technical foundation? The organic aerodynamic shape of the roof is, amongst others, apt to water or snow drainage due to its sloping characteristics. Sheathing and structural analysis of the structure are conceived with consideration to local weather and climatic conditions as well as consideration to the building’s energy efficiency. The building of the new station should cost CZK 46.5 million. What is included in this price? This budget is only for the construction of the station building. It doesn’t include interior equipment and technology facilities associated with the station’s operation. You often attend to revitalisations of old stations. Which other projects of station buildings do you think have the chance to be realised? There were often urban studies that were to introduce the volume structure of functional areas, estimation of heights of the building and the overall urban concept including the checking of the transport infrastructure around the land of the released station areas closer to the particular development. The changing of an Master plan for the project of overlapping the rail-yard near the Vinohrady tunnels of the Main Railway Station in Prague was approved this June after a relatively lengthy process. Your turning point projects certainly include the construction of Prague’s airport and prior to that the port in Montreal. Is there anything that connects these two projects? As Ruzyně airport is the gateway to the city and the country from the air, the port in Montreal is a gateway by water – the St. Lawrence River brings in ships from Europe and the whole world. The shipping function of the old port in Montreal was reduced with the increase volume of automobile and air transport. Extensive shipping areas, grain tanks and silos blocked access to the water. I came to Montreal at a time when all this was highly visible. In 1981, I participated in this public discussion with a winning design within the framework of a project idea. But it took another quarter of a century for those ideas to be fulfilled and the whole area revitalised. As for Karlovy Vary, the station building is the gateway to an important spa town via railway. Why didn’t you participate in the completion of the ‘piers’ of the Palác Flóra, Královské Vinohrady, Praha 3, realizace 2003, klient: Africa Israel, foto: Pavel Štecha / Palác Flóra, Královské Vinohrady, Prague 3, realisation 2003, client: Africa Israel, photo: Pavel ŠtechaPalác Florta Multifunkční komplex Záhřebská 23-25, Praha 2, realizace 2000, nákl. 110 mil. In 1994, Michal Brix and I won an architectural tender for the whole building of the terminal, including the A and B piers. In 1997, when the terminal was inaugurated, the first phase of the half of the B finger was completed for investment reasons with the fact that it will be completed once the prognoses about the increased number of passengers is fulfilled. The airport we designed received a number of Czech and international awards, amongst others also a nomination for the European Mies van der Rohe award in Barcelona. The prognoses were soon fulfilled, but the management of the Czech Airport Administration, s.p., then placed the 2nd phase – the extension of the B finger – with different architects and gave them a digital version of our design. That is also how it was completed without inviting us, the authors, to all legal enacted steps of the project, including the author’s supervision. All is now the object of litigation at the municipal court. Apart from these contracts that are worth billions of crowns, you also design family houses. Which work do you like best? Personally, every project must contain some advance in its content or use of innovative materials. For instance, in the project for the reconstruction of the Imperial Stables Gallery at Prague Castle, I restricted the design to five transparent features from clear glass. We installed a glass wall which separates the vestibule from the hall and is a part of the microclimatic control. Samozřejmě architektura, její estetika a řešení hmot a forem musejí brát tyto aspekty v potaz. Spotřeba energie a provozní náklady budou minimální. MARKÉTA KOHOUTOVÁ DN 11/2010 Karlovy Vary, Horní nádraží, návrh 2010, nákl. 46,5 mil. Only locks, girder brackets and point binders are made from stainless steel. We are also preparing a reconstruction of the Chapel of St. Cross at Prague Castle into a fixed exposition of St. Vitus’s Treasure on a similar principle. You were born in Vinohrady, Prague, and returned there twenty years ago. What does this district mean to you? I spent my youth at Královské Vinohrady, primary and secondary education, first loves. Later we were designing airports at the National House. We rented ballet halls there, moved in computers and furniture and then I spent one and a half years going to this studio on this grandiose staircase as I used to when taking dance classes. Offices for our other projects were in Londýnská Street where I have been staying up to now. I was honoured to realise there such projects as a complex of apartments and offices in the Záhřebská Street. The author’s supervision at the building site was on an everyday basis. In Záhřebská Street, I could design lofts and extensions to a building from the turn of the 20th century. Then we received both international as well as Czech awards for the project of this reconstruction. The Flora Palace at upper Královské Vinohrady designed as a street and lit by a top light is constantly full of people. It lives and serves. You emigrated to Canada which is a country well-known for its particularly green approach to architecture. You operated there professionally for almost twenty years. What did this experience bring you? It was certainly a wonderful professional experience for me. But first I had to cope with completely different measurements and distances. That is why I spent my first money for a bus ticket and travelled through the whole of America. From the beginning of the 1980’s, I was a member of the Order of Architects of Quebec. From the middle of the 1980’s, I and my partner James Ogden had our own In your opinion, how does modern architecture and an architect’s profession differ between here and there? I lived in Montreal where variations in temperatures are much more extreme than in Czech, that means extreme cold weather and tropical summers with high humidity. Architecture and the design of buildings are then also orientated to a securing of comfort and also heated comfort. From the end of the 1970’s, I had to become familiarized with terms of passive solar energy, orientation to cardinal points, sufficient insulation of the structures, ecological heating systems. That was a development to passive houses, a green approach to architecture. Architecture, its aesthetics and dealing with forms must naturally impeach these aspects. Now I have another project under construction north-west of Montreal – two studios for the work of artists who are invited by my client to reside – that means work and living. It is a passive house situated on a slope above a lake mounted in greenery and with large all-glassed walls facing south, from the inside framing views of the scenery by the lake. Even wood for the cladding and parts of the structure were lumbered according to my specifications in advance and on the client’s land so there was no transportation necessary. architecture architectural studio in Montreal and an association with a studio in New York. There was an interesting architectural discussion held in Montreal then referring to the revitalisation of industrial buildings and their adaptive reuse within monument preservation. I was a part of this discussion. You are designing a new building for the Czech Institute of Cybernetics and Information Science at the Czech Technical University in Jugoslávských partyzánů Street. How ‘green and innovative’ will this building be? We account with a model utilisation of state of the art technologies. The building’s architecture will have a double fa ade with a maximum use of economy saving technologies. The inter-space of the protruding fa ade made from pads of ETFE foil works as a sun collector with air being sucked into ventilation units regaining heat and humidity from exhaust air with a 75% effectiveness. Selection of the sucking points will be controlled by a system of automatic regulation depending upon temperature and exposure to the sun of the individual fa ades. A hot-water pipe system is used as a source of heat for heating purposes. We account with and extensive scheme of greenery and green roofs with insulating properties. Details will be elaborated and verified in the LEED building certification system evaluating the buildings’ energy efficiency. Energy consumption and operational costs will be minimal.
