Fantomy vesnice Nabua Phantoms of Nabua Apichatpong Weerasethakul 01 Fantomy vesnice Nabua Phantoms of Nabua Apichatpong Weerasethakul Výstava v tranzitdisplay Zázemí pro současné umění 1. 10 − 31. 10 2010 Dittrichova 9 Praha 2 www.tranzitdisplay.cz otevírací doba úterý−neděle 12.00−18.00 Neonová zářivka osvětluje prázdné hřiště. Film Fantomy vesnice Nabua je portrétem domova, v němž různá světla a jejich vzájemná komunikace odrážejí na jedné straně bezpečí domova a zároveň symbolizují destrukci.“ Apichatpong Weerasethakul, dostupné na: http://www.animateprojects.org/docs/1278606750635_apichatpong_ weerasethakul__artforum.com_tst123_0.pdf Projekt Primitive v Čechách Výstava Fantomy vesnice Nabua v tranzitdisplay Fantomy vesnice Nabua Apichatpong Weerasethakul 2009, stopáž: 10’56” (smyčka). www.tranzitdisplay.cz 03 CUJO Primitive Apichatpong Weerasethakul Milano: Edizioni Zero II., 2009, č 1. www.cujoguide.com Doprovodný program 7. 10. Současný thajský film / Antonín Tesař / přednáška s ukázkami / tranzitdisplay / 90 min Současný thajský film I. Thajská nová vlna Druhá polovina devadesátých let znamenala renesanci thajské kinematografie, někdy označovanou jako thajská nová vlna. The film comprises of shots of house interiors in the evening. The houses are all deserted except for one, where there is a group of young soldiers, played by some teens of Nabua. Two of them impersonate Apichatpong Weerasethakul by narrating the film. They repeat, rehearse, memorise a letter to a man named Boonmee. They tell him about a small community called Nabua where the inhabitants have abandoned their homes. The wind blows fiercely through the doors, and the windows, bringing with it a swarm of bugs. As evening approaches, the sky turns dark. The bugs scatter and the men are silent… Strýček Búnmí Premiéra v českých kinech 30. 9. 2010 Scénář a režie: Apichatpong Weerasethakul / Hrají: Thanapat Saisaymar, Jenjira Pongpas, Sakda Kaewbuadee, Natthakarn Aphaiwonk / Kamera: Sayombhu Mukdeeprom / Střih: Lee Chatametikool / Zvuk: Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr / Originální název: Loong Boonmee raleuk chat - Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives / Země: Thajsko, VB, Nizozemí, Německo, Španělsko, Francie / 2010 / Stopáž: 114 minut Muž jménem Búnmí léta žije sám ve svém venkovském domě. Tyto a další podobné příběhy byly v roce 1983 knižně vydány pod názvem A Man Who Can Recall Past Lives (Phra Sripariyattiweti Sang Arun Forest Monastery, Khon Kaen, 1983). V roce 1999 založil vlastní produkční filmovou společnost Kick the Machine Films. Pracuje s citacemi thajské komiksové, filmové a televizní tvorby, ale inspiraci hledá v příbězích venkovských lidí, kteří ještě žijí napůl tradičním životem, a napůl už v moderním světě. Svůj celovečerní debut Mysterious Object at Noon natočil v roce 2000. Tvorbu Apichatponga Weerasethakula charakterizuje nelineární vyprávění, téma paměti a citlivé ztvárnění osobních i aktuálních politických témat. Nearby a flash of light is projected on a makeshift screen. As night falls, the silhouette figures of young men emerge, they are playing with a football raging with fire precariously close to the white screen... “The film Phantoms of Nabua is a portrait of home, in which various lights and their mutual communication exude, on the one hand, the comforts of home and also symbolize destruction.“ Apichatpong Weerasethakul From the artist’s statement “Phantoms of Nabua are part of the Primitive project, in which I explored the memory of northeast Thailand through one village and its history. The people of Nabua try to forget and don‘t want to remember the cruel times. Uncle Boonmee, on the other hand, delves into the memory of one man who even has recollections from past lives. Until now I’ve only worked with my own memory. But for Primitive, I am branching out. The work examines my memory of the landscape I grew up with. But since my memory is haphazard, the film is told through the eyes of others. This makes the film more spontaneous than my previous work. This time I didn’t have any fixed plan. When we started, we just travelled, explored, recorded, and met with people until we reached this village that has a particularly violent history. From the 1960s through the ’80s, the government occupied this part of Thailand in order to curb communist insurgents. I felt a kinship with the young rebels more than with the other teenagers there, so I decided to work with them. (…) When we were in the village, the political conflict was quite intense. Red shirts were again gathering momentum and they had started street protests in Bangkok that had already led to a clash.” Apichatpong Weerasethakul, quoted from : http://www.animateprojects.org/docs/1278606750635_apichatpong_ weerasethakul__artforum.com_tst123_0.pdf „Last year as a tribute to a place I often visit I wrote an article called Wing Rim Beung (Jogging Around the Swamp). It’s an impression of a swamp in my home town of Khon Kaen in northeast Thailand. In one paragraph there’s a description of a light near the swamp: ‚There is something more beautiful at this swamp however; a wooden pole with a soft white neon lamp attached to it, located at one corner next to a large tree. Whenever 10 Director and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul spent several months in the village of Nabua in northeast Thailand in order to, together with the local people, reconstruct the memory of the region there. The video installation Phantoms of Nabua is, along with another short film Letter to Uncle Boonmee, the feature-length film Uncle Boonmee, the multimedia exhibition and the author book CUJO, part of the Primitive project devoted to the past and present of Weerasethakul’s native province of Isan. This is a region marked by years of fighting between the military and rebels, but also by a strong religious tradition and mysticism. I go running I always have to stop and look at the lamp blinking on and off, as if its ballast is in a state of permanent decline. The lamp light is momentarily reflected in the large tree nearby, briefly revealing its green leaves in the darkness.’ Perhaps for an economic reason, most of the houses in Asia are illuminated by fluorescent lights. Even though these lights make the skin look pale, even dead, for me they recall being home. The film’s setting is a rear projection and a recreation of a fluorescent light pole back in my hometown. The setting transforms into a playground where the silhouettes of boys playing with a flaming ball move... “The film Phantoms of Nabua is a portrait of home, in which various lights and their mutual communication exude, on the one hand, the safety of home and also symbolize destruction.“ Apichatpong Weerasethakul, quoted from : http://www.animateprojects.org/docs/1278606750635_apichatpong_ weerasethakul__artforum.com_tst123_0.pdf Primitive Project in Czech Republic Phantoms of Nabua Exhibition in tranzitdisplay Phantoms of Nabua Apichatpong Weerasethakul 2009, running time: 10‘56“ (loop). www.tranzitdisplay.cz 11 CUJO Primitive Apichatpong Weerasethakul Milano: Edizioni Zero II., 2009, no. 1. www.cujoguide.com Accompanying program 7. 10. Contemporary Thai Film / Antonín Tesař / lecture with excerpts / tranzitdisplay / 90 min Contemporary Thai Film I. Thai New Wave The latter half of the 1990s saw a renaissance in Thai film often called the Thai new wave. The production of domestic films in Thailand was paralysed in the early 1980s when distribution films from Hollywood began to flood the market. This slump continued till 1997 when the majority of the most important filmmakers connected to new Thai film debuted. A key figure is Nonzee Nimibutr, who produced many significant films of the Thai new wave. Also important here are directors Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Wisit Sasanatieng and the Pang brothers. Their films reacted to the trends of that time in foreign genre films and included in them the directors’ own ideas. This was especially evident at the end of the 1990s in the wave of postmodern crime films inspired by Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. II Martial Arts Films After Hong Kong, Thailand is the East Asian country whose cinematography most strongly defines its own national identity through martial arts. The most striking figure in Thai martial arts films is Tony Jaa, clearly following in the footsteps of Hong Kong star Bruce Lee. Both actors refer in their films to the national consciousness of Thai viewers, primarily through their fighting styles and, secondarily, through the historical allusions of their films. Jaa’s fighting style, however, refers to a purely national tradition. Its technique is not derived from current Muay Thai, but from more traditional forms of Muay Kad Cheuk (a style in which the fighters have their hands wrapped) and Muay Kotchasan (a style of fighting based on the elephant’s movements). It is the opposition of Jaa‘s traditional style to present-day commercialism and internationally profaned professional Thai boxing that forms the backbone of his hit Ong-bak and its continuation to strengthen national identity in a country that became a tourist attraction because of it. 12 III Horror films The outbreak of ghost horror films that began ten years ago with the film Ring (dir: Hideo Nakata, Japan, 1998) was exhausted after a few years in the country of its origin, but remained strong in Thailand in an effete form geared mainly toward a superficial effect. Thai slasher films are a unique example of the imbalance and extreme ambitions of Thai cinematography. When he becomes gravely ill, he decides to spend his last days surrounded by his loved ones. All that’s left is his sister-in-law Jen, his nephew Tong, his Laos caretaker and plenty of memories of loved ones who’ve long ago died or disappeared. In the time that’s remaining to him, he ponders death and in his memories he floats into his past lives where he could have been a secret princess, an enslaved bull or a speaking fish. Accompanied by his family and the spirit of his deceased wife and lost son, who comes back in the form of a monkey, he sets out to a solitary cave deep in the jungle. To the cave of his very first birth. Director and internationally acclaimed artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul was inspired by the real story of a man named Boonmee, who lived in a Buddhist monastery and told the abbot there about his past lives that came back to him during meditation. These and other similar stories were published in 1983 in a book entitled A Man Who Can Recall Past Lives (Phra Sripariyattiweti Sang Arun Forest Monastery, Khon Kaen, 1983). Weerasethakul, who deals in his work with the theme of memory and lived near the aforementioned monastery, made a poetic film based on this book and enriched it with his own experience and fantastic elements inspired by Thai horror films of the 1970s. Images of the Thai jungle alternate with shots full of film hyperbole, and pathos alternate with comicality. Studied filmmaking with a focus on experimental film at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has been making short films and video bordering on fiction since the early 90s. He is one of the few filmmakers in Thailand who have succeeded outside the conventional Thai film industry. In 1999 he founded his own production company, Kick the Machine Films. His work draws from Thai comics, film and television, but he seeks his inspiration in the stories of village people who live partially by tradition and partially in the modern world. He shot his first feature Mysterious Object at Noon in 2000. Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s work is characterized by non-linear narration, the theme of memory and the sensitive depiction of personal and contemporary political themes.
