Welcome to Liberec!
Welcome to Liberec!
Dear Incoming Erasmus student,
We are sure you have heard so much about what your Erasmus semester/year is
going to be like from the stories of countless of your friends who went on their own
Erasmus stint. Whatever your expectations are, we hope that we can fulfill them and
give you the best Erasmus experience ever.
Hopefully this guide can get you more excited than you probably already are right
now, and aside from that, prepare you on what to expect in your Erasmus home for
the next few months.
This guide book contains basic information about Czech Republic and Liberec. One
part is devoted to helping you get to Liberec and our dormitories from Prague, settle
into the dormitories, and several tips about life in the dormitories. We also included a
small dictionary of Czech words and phrases which will help you survive your first few
days here. And finally, we will introduce to you our organization, the ESN, what we
do, and what is in-store for you during the welcome days. We highly recommend for
you not to miss the Welcome days because we planned a lot of events to help you
get to know your fellow Erasmus students.
If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by email
([email protected]), Facebook group (http://on.fb.me/1Ta8sWi) or by screaming
“Pomoc!” at the top of your lungs (least effective method but quite fun, right? Plus,
you learn a new Czech word!).
With love,
ESN Liberec Team

Some info about Czech Republic and
Liberec
Czech Republic
Czech Republic is a landlocked country in central Europe. It shares its borders with Germany, Poland,
Slovakia, and Austria.
For a country that’s only been around since 1993, Czech Republic does a fine job of showcasing an
exciting history. Here the past becomes real. Castles and chateaux abound, illuminating the stories of
powerful families and individuals whose influence was felt well beyond the nation’s current borders.
Unravel the history of Bohemia and Moravia, the two ancient lands that now make up the modern
Czech Republic and you’re unearthing the history of Europe itself. During your Erasmus stay here, we
have planned some trips which will show you the rich nature and amazing landmarks that this country
has to offer.
Popular for its excellent beer, majestic castles, and historical old towns, you will definitely discover that
there is a lot more to Czech Republic than these.
You have probably read a lot about Czech Republic before coming here, so this is just a short
summary of the facts and figures for this awesome country.

Liberec is situated in the northern part of the Czech Republic. The suburbs of Liberec has a population
of 150,000 inhabitants, which makes it the fifth largest city in Czech Republic, and second largest city
in Bohemia. The Ještěd tower, a 94 m tall tower used to transmit television signals, is built on the top
of the Ještěd mountain. It offers a nice view of the countryside, which includes the beautiful Jizerské

How to get to Liberec from Prague
From Prague Airport to Liberec
All international flights go to the Václav
Havel Airport in Prague (also known as
LETIŠTĚ VÁCLAVA HAVLA PRAHA).
Upon arrival, look for “Public Transport
Information” kiosks in the arrival hall of both
Terminal 1 and 2 where you can purchase a
transport ticket valid for trams, buses, and
metro within Prague. Purchase a 90-minute
ticket for 32 CZK. However, this kiosk is
only open from 7am to 10pm. Outside these
hours, you will need Czech money to
purchase the tickets from the automats (32
CZK) or from the bus driver (40 CZK). Note
that the driver does not accept large bills and
the automat only accepts coins.
From the airport, take the bus number 100 which you can find in the bus stop just outside
the airport.
Note: When you get into the bus, do not forget
to validate your ticket on those cute little
yellow rectangular boxes you will see upon
entering the bus. Inspectors come quite often
to check if you have validated tickets and you
will have to pay a fine if they catch you without
it. Not a lot of fun when it’s your first time in a
new city, right?
Bus number 100 takes you to stop Zličín. From
here, you take the Metro C (yellow line) all the
way to the last station, Černý Most. Here you will

find Student Agency buses leaving every hour to Liberec. Ticket price is at 95CZK. We
recommend that you book your tickets in advance because buses get full quite often. To
book your tickets, check out this site: https://bustickets.studentagency.eu/
The Student Agency buses to Liberec are direct buses so you will get off at the first stop
which is called Fügnerova-Blažkova station. Finally, you have arrived in Liberec!
From Florenc International Bus Station to Liberec
If you are arriving by bus, it is also pretty easy. The main thing is you have to make your way
to Černý Most, and from there everything is the same as stated previously. So, from the bus
terminal, take the Florenc underground metro line C (yellow line) to Černý Most. For this
connection, you will only need the 30-minute ticket which only costs 24CZK and can also be
bought at the ticket counters, tobacconist, or the automat. Do not forget to validate your ticket
before entering the station and going down the escalators.
From Liberec City Center (Fügnerova) to Harcov
When you get to Liberec City Center, then it is just a 10-minute bus ride to the Harcov
dormitories. You can buy the 40-minute ticket for 20CZK from the tobacconist, the automat,
or the driver (24CZK with the driver). You can take buses number 15, 19, or 29. For buses
15 and 29, your destination is bus stop Stodolní. For bus number 19, your destination is
Březová Alej. We have created a really cool video that you can watch to familiarize yourself
with how to go from the city center to the dormitories. Follow this link:

If you think you might need assistance because of you big bags, you can get help from your
buddy if you ask really nicely. Expect them to contact you before coming to Liberec. This is
also why registering to our SectionBox is very important, so you can be assigned a buddy.

Harcov Life
What to expect?
Harcov is arguably the best dormitory in the Czech Republic. It was voted as such three
times in 2011, 2013 and 2014. It is very close to nature as you would see a wonderful view
outside when you look out of your window. Make sure to check out the rooftops of buildings
A, B, and C before they close for winter as you will find here one of the best views of Liberec.
So aside from the good surroundings, the Harcov community is both fun and unique. You
won’t have a boring day here (unless you love to lock yourself inside your room). From the
party people, to the sporty jocks, to the nerdy guys. The student population is so diverse.
You will definitely find your niche. But of course there is the ESN and the buddies who are
dedicated to helping you enjoy your stay here. You will definitely have your own group of
close Erasmus friends but do not forget to try to reach out to the local people because that is
how you will learn about the Czech culture.
Checking-in and dormitory facilities
Checking-in to the dormitory might be a daunting task for a newcomer especially because
there is a high chance you might encounter someone who does not speak in English. But do
not fear, this is where your buddy can help you. Your buddy can guide you in filling out the
forms, and knowing the rules in the dormitory initially. There are just a few things that you
should bring with you during this process:
- Passport or ID card for EU citizens
- 2 passport photos
- A guarantee of 3000CZK which you will get in the end of your stay provided that you
did not cause any damage to the room.
After signing a contract, you will get your dormitory card with your picture on it and your room
keys. You will also receive a white paper where you will write all pre-existing damages in
your room. Be very meticulous about filling this up and make sure you put every possible
damages you initially find because it might happen that you will get charged for these
damages in the end because you did not write it on the paper.
The common flat consists of two rooms that share a common kitchen, toilet, and bathroom.
The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, a two-burner electric stove, cupboards, and
shelves. Each room can accomodate 2 to 3 persons and is equipped with beds, pillows,
mattresses, blankets, tables, closet, drawers, and lamps. It is possible to request for a single
room, but granting of it depends on the availability. The rent for a shared room is 90CZK per
day, and for the single room is 120CZK per day.

Calmness at night
Because Harcov is a dormitory and it is essentially a place where students sleep, you should
be aware that disturbing the peace after 10pm is strictly prohibited. Accomodation services
will intervene, and if that’s not enough, they might call the police on you. Erasmus students
are notorious for having very loud and crazy room parties, but you can always move your
party to the nearby student clubs if it gets too late in the night.
Internet
After the registration to our school system (made by the school), you will receive a username
and password, which you need to connect to internet in school and in dormitory. It takes
time, in the mean time, you can go to the S-club restaurant or Žito restaurant, where wifi is
available. Just order something and sit there as long as you want.
For information on how to connect and install the school internet, check out this website:
http://liane.tul.cz/en/Liane_at_Residence.
Printing
There are two possibilities to print your documents in the dormitories and the university:
1. In the school and in the dormitories
You can print your documents in the library located in building H and in the reception
of each dormitory. But you need to have some money on your ISIC card. You can put
the money into your ISIC card in receptions in all dormitories in Harcov and Vesec, in
school buildings F (in services for students) and H (library). You can find more
information here about printing via Satikos system on the internet also in English.
2. In ESN clubroom
You need to have the ESNcard and ask one of the members of ESN Liberec for
assistance.
Sports facilities
You will be happy to learn that you won’t be totally unhealthy during your Erasmus stay.
When you feel guilty about all those food you ate, and all those alcohol that you drank, know
that you can always go to the gym to stretch your muscles and burn those unwanted
Erasmus weight. If you register early, you can avail of the gym membership for one whole
semester for just 1000CZK. This includes the use of an adequately equipped gym, sauna,
and swimming pool (specified schedules only). There is also an option to register for group
classes like yoga, aerobics, TRX, and so on. During the semester, we will give you more
information and help you to register if you want.
There are other sports facilities around the dormitory like the football field, beach volleyball
court, tennis court, table tennis rooms, and sports climbing wall. Ask your buddy how to book
these if you are interested.
It is also possible to create a sports team for Erasmus students and participate in the Harcov
league. Let us know if you are interested, and we can help you manage the team.
Food shop
Since Harcov is really like a small community, we have our own food shop in the ground floor
of the Menza building, right across Restaurace Žito. They sell basic food stuff, bread, eggs,
drinks and snacks which is very convenient because of its proximity. If you cannot find what
you need, there are other food shops around the vicinity of the dormitory that you can check
out. First is right up the hill near the bus stop Březová Alej. And the second one is along
Husova street and you will pass by it when you walk to University, which is also very
convenient.

University Library
The library can be found in H building in Voroněžská street (adress: Voroněžská 13 Liberec)
on the ground floor, just in front of the entrance door. The library's collection is focussed on
science, technology, architecture, arts and construction. There is a well lit and airconditioned
study area, while the basement is comfortably furnished. Registration is free, you just need
an ISIC card. Penalty is given to books not returned on time. If you want to register, just ask
at the reception of the library. You can find more information here: http://knihovna.tul.cz/en/.

University canteens (Menza) and coffeehouses
There are three university canteens that provide meal for students and staff. Two buffets, in
Harcov and Husova Street, complement the service. The university café serves great tasting
coffee and a selection of quick snacks like baguettes and sandwiches.
Coffeehouses:
 Husova (just next to the canteen)
 Husova (first floor of the Information Centre)
 Voroněžská (just next to the canteen)
Good for getting quick snacks during breaks between clases. Offering a varied choices of
food and drinks in Husova.
Canteens/Menza:
 Harcov (dormitory building complex, opposite of the Žito restaurant) – the only
canteen which serves dinner.
 Husova (building F, Husova street)
 Voroněžská (building H, Voroněžská street)
The menu is available one week in advance, you can order online as early as that. Every day
you have possibility to choose one from approximately 6 meals, but their quantity is limited.

So you have to order your lunch and dinner through webportal or on ordering terminals in the
canteens. The advantage is that you can cancel your order in case of need. Orders are
linked to the ISIC card on which you have your own cash account. You have to deposit
money at the cash desk in each canteen or in the dormitory receptions.
If you want to eat in the university canteens, first you need to register. The registration can
be done in one of the canteen‘s in the reception. Then you will just put money into your ISIC
card and order meals via a menza webpage or by machines.
ISIC
You may have noticed that ISIC has been mentions several times already in this guidebook.
ISIC card is required and is very important. You need it for entering the dormitory or parties,
for ordering meals, for recieving some students discounts, and so on.
How to get it:
You do not have to be scared. During Welcome Days you will have the posibility to get it with
our assistance. In case you will come a bit later, you have to first go to your faculty - student
department, where you will ask about making ISIC card. They will give you a paper, and you
will pay for it. Then you have to go to the office in building F in Husova street (right next
computer room) with the paper and your ID or passport. There they will take a photo of you
and you will pick your ISIC card up again in student department of your faculty around one
week later.

My little Czech dictionary and phrase book
Czech is the language spoken here in Czech Republic. Since Prague is a big, touristic city,
English is spoken more widely there than in Liberec. Although English is also sometimes
spoken in shops in Liberec, it will serve you well to know a bit of the language before you
come as Czechs appreciate it when foreigners try(but mostly fail) to speak their language.
Below are a few phrases and words that can help you in your Erasmus stay.
Useful Phrases:
Yes = Ano (ano)
No = Ne (ne)
Please = Prosím (proseem)
Thank you = Děkuji vám (dyekooyi vam)
Thanks = Díky (deeki)
Excuse me = S dovolením (s dovolenyeem)
Sorry = promiň (promin)
Hello = Ahoj, čau (ahoy, chau)
Good morning = Dobré ráno (dobrye rano)

Club-room / ESN-room
We have our own office in Harcov. You can find it in the block C, 6th floor, it is just in the hall.
It serves as a venue of our weekly team meetings but we also organize there movie nights,
activities, games, dark hour, and more. It's possible to borrow our room sometimes but you
have to ask one of the ESN team members to accompany you because only they have the
access to the room.
SocialErasmus
The aim of the SocialErasmus project is to allow international students to benefit maximum
from the local community and enrich others through the international background of the
students. International students are invited to volunteer in the framework of the
SocialErasmus project under three main areas of action: education, charity and environment.
The SocialErasmus project enables people to experience something new and to get new
perspectives as well as learn more about European cultures.
