Guest @ CORINTHIA HOTELS CZECH REPUBLIC [5] The best four Museums to visit outside Prague ° Prague has a wonderful collection of museums, but do not forget that outside the capital there is an equally diverse collection of fascinating museums. Some focus on themes and topics that are closely identified with Bohemia, such as beer or glassmaking, with three of the museums we have mentioned being examples of this. All those listed below are within a 90-minute drive from Prague, so they are easy to reach. And there are plenty of other things to see and do near the museums – Kutná Hora for example is registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. 1. MUSEUM OF GLASS AND JEWELLERY JABLONEC NAD NISOU, NORTH BOHEMIA 2. CZECH MUSEUM OF SILVER KUTNÁ HORA, CENTRAL BOHEMIA Did you know that the Czech lands were once a leading centre of glassmaking? The towns of Liberec and Jablonec nad Nisou, in north-eastern Bohemia were once the heart of this thriving industry, which enjoyed its peak in the 19th century. Although it is no longer what it was, the industry left its mark on these towns in many ways, including the beautiful Art Nouveau villas owned by wealthy industrialists. The museum itself is housed in a striking Art Nouveau structure (where you will find the main It is hard to believe that this sleepy little town south-east of Prague was once a centre of the mining industry in the Middle Ages and was actually bigger than it is today. Silver gave the town its name, made it rich and helped build one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Central Europe. Kutná Hora grew rich in the Middle Ages, when silver deposits were discovered, but its glory was later to fade in the 17th century, when competition from mines in South America made Kutná Hora silver too expensive. collections) and in the Belvedere Gallery. The range of subjects covered is very diverse, with two main collections and 19 subcollections, displaying everything from medals, to painted goblets from the 17th century. There is also an extensive jet jewellery collection and look out for glass by Moser and works by Adolf Loos, the designer famous for his buildings in Vienna. If you prefer modern glass design, there are works by contemporary Czech designers too. Regular temporary exhibitions are staged at the museum too. www.msb-jablonec.cz 6 ]] [[ 6 Guest @ CORINTHIA HOTELS CZECH REPUBLIC www.cms-kh.cz With 170,000 items, including a large collection of coins, the Czech Museum of Silver helps visitors gain a better understanding of this history and of silver mining itself. It is housed in three sites in the town. Hrádek, the former medieval mint, contains the main section. Learn more about silver mining on Tour 1 – “The Way of Silver”; Tour 2 – “The Town of Silver” focuses on Kutná Hora and includes a highlight of the visit, the tour through a 250m-long mine gallery. Put on a hard hat and a white coat and go underground! Nejlepší Na březích Vltavy mimopražská muzea V Praze je mnoho vynikajících muzeí, avšak nezapomínejme, že i jiná města se mohou pyšnit skvělými muzejními exponáty. Pár takových muzeí uvádíme níže. 3. Muzeum umožňuje návštěvníkům lépe pochopit historii a těžbu stříbra. Nachází se na třech místech ve městě. Hrádek, bývalá středověká mincovna, představuje hlavní expozici. Poznejte lépe těžbu stříbra díky prohlídkám s průvodcem, z nichž jedna zahrnuje zlatý hřeb v podobě průchodu 250 metrů dlouhou důlní galerií. www.cms-kh.cz The Škoda car, like beer, is a Czech icon. This famous brand has a much longer history than most people realise, and the company celebrated its 100th anniversary last year; not many car manufacturers can do so. If you want to learn more about the story of the brand you will see everywhere in the Czech Republic, head to Mladá Boleslav, north-east of Prague. For Czechs, Mladá Boleslav is synonymous with Škoda. The car plant, now owned by the Volkswagen Group, is located here, as well as the museum. It traces of the history of the company which started out as Laurin & Klement producing the L & K bicycle and then its first car in 1905. The exhibitions include a presentation of the company history, with the full range of Škoda models, from the early days, through the 1930s, when the successful Škoda Popular arrived on the market, to the current models. DR STUART’S BOTANICUS HISTORIC CENTRE AND GARDENS, OSTRÁ If you have wandered through Pragués Ungelt courtyard near Old Town Square you are bound to have come across Botanicus, a shop selling traditional handmade herbal products made from organic materials. But did you know that the company also owns a “medieval” village and organic gardens? Find out more by visiting the “historic centre” at Ostrá nad Labem, near Nymburk, a short distance from Prague. Here you will experience “the bustle, sounds and smells of the early 1500’s in Bohemia“. A reconstructed village of this period features blacksmiths and candlemakers among others, and you can watch them at their work. Children will love the “hands on” craft activities and the antics of jesters. You can also enjoy the site on a guided tour. Plant enthusiasts will no doubt the organic gardens, which now cover 22 hectares, at the site. Corinthia Hotels International LISBON Lisabon CORINTHIA HOTELS INTERNATIONAL Lisbon Summer is now over, but if you are still hankering after warm, sunny days then Lisbon is an ideal destination. Its bright, warm weather continues into September and October. The city itself is one of Europe’s most laidback capitals, offering you plenty of things to see and do without the stress of the larger cities. Indeed, just wandering the streets can be a pleasure, and even if you do not visit any of the museums or galleries you can still enjoy Lisbon. Contrast is one of the strongest themes you will notice in the capital. Start off in the Baixa, or Lower Town, and notice the grand buildings and long avenues. This is the very heart of the city, with two great squares, Praça de Rossio and Praça de Comércio. The former is full of cafés from which to watch life go by and is a focal point of Lisbon. Then the atmosphere changes noticeably in the districts of Alfama and Bairro Alto. Both are situated on steep hills and can be reached by Lisbon’s charmingly old-fashioned trams or, in the case of Bairro Alto, by the famous Elevador da Glória. These districts of steep narrow lanes and village-like atmosphere seem a world away from the grand thoroughfares of Baixa. Beyond this area are two more well-known attractions: the superb Monastery of Jerónimos, famous for its decoration and vaulting, and the Torre de Belém, a symbol of the city. Corinthia Lisboa Hotel And when choosing a base, whether you are here for business or pleasure, you need look no further than the Corinthia Lisboa Hotel. A sophisticated, modern 5-star hotel very conveniently located only a few minutes away from the most important attractions, it will help you get the most out of your visit. You can be right at the very heart of the city in no time at all, and there you have all the historic sights close by, as well as the main shopping areas and nightlife. Lisbon’s airport is just 7 km from the hotel. The hotel was completely refurbished in 2005 and offers the very best in terms of comfort and facilities. The 518 rooms come under the categories of Standard, Executive and Suites, blending good design and stylish comfort. Business visitors can enjoy the exclusive use of our Executive Club offering superb views over Lisbon. The Club has private check-in and check-out benefits, two conference rooms, and a business centre with free internet access . When it comes to eating and drinking, you can choose from a mouth-watering selection of local or international dishes at the Típico and Sete Collinas restaurants. And once you have had a meal why not relax with a cool cocktail at the cosmopolitan Tempus Lounge Bar? Or you could unwind in the beautiful terrace garden. And if you want to keep fit you can take advantage of the excellent Lisbon climate to enjoy our outdoor swimming pool. Whatever your reason for visiting and however long you choose to stay in Lisbon, we will do our very best to make you feel at home. Welcome to Lisbon! Atmosféra se mění ve čtvrtích Alfama a Bairro Alto, které se rozkládají na strmých kopcích, na něž se dostanete známou lisabonskou tramvají nebo starodávným výtahem. Guest @ CORINTHIA HOTELS CZECH REPUBLIC [ 13 ] Nový Svět is one of the most beautiful and peaceful corners of historic Prague Discover Prague’s most beautiful backstreets ° Cobbled lanes that twist among modest Baroque houses. Tiny redroofed cottages that seem to be designed only for the inhabitants of Lilliput. There is a world within a world in the Golden City of Prague. A world that beckons and is only a few steps away from Prague Castle. You can find it at Nový Svět in Hradčany. Evocative and magical are words often used to describe Prague, and indeed Hradčany is Prague at its most evocative and magical. Sadly, many visitors don’t experience this district properly because they focus on the Castle. So let us take you on a journey to this enchanting world that has some of the bestkept secrets in Prague. Guest @ A clear, still autumn day is perfect for a wander around Hradčany. The light is sharp, the summer heat has gone, and the vibrant yellow and orange leaves of the stately horse chestnut trees form a perfect backdrop to the scene. Smoke rises lazily from Baroque chimneys, its aroma filling the air and drifting over curving red roofs. There are few more romantic ways of spending an afternoon or early evening. Route A word of warning! Sturdy footwear is recommended for the walk described below. The cobbled streets will surely captivate you, but they will not captivate your feet if they aren’t dressed properly! [ 14 ] CORINTHIA HOTELS CZECH REPUBLIC From Prague Castle entrance (Hradčanské náměstí) walk across to the Archbishop’s Palace, the graceful and imposing Baroque building immediately to the right of the Castle, and continue along this side of the square. The Šternberský palác (Sternberk Palace) collection of the National Gallery is situated behind the Palace. It’s a must, but leave it for another time... Mozart’s other house in Prague At the end of the square, just before you turn on to Kanovnická Street, you will spot a handsome Baroque structure (No 65/6). It was once the home to Jiří Mucha until his death in 1991. He was the son of the famous Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha and a notable figure in his own right. Guests at this house included Henry Kissinger and Miloš Forman, who filmed “Amadeus” in Prague partly because it looked more like Mozart’s Vienna than the Austrian capital itself. And if you remember “Amadeus”, the house on the right (No 68/5) may just be familiar – in the film Mozart lived here. Look out for the sign with a dove holding an anchor in its beak. Such symbols are a feature of Prague and were used in the way door numbers are used today. On your right, at the end of Hradčanské náměstí is an older structure, the Martinický palác (Martinic Palace), named after the owner, one of the victims of the Defenestration of Prague and who ended up in Objevte nejkrásnější skryté uličky Prahy Dlážděné uličky vinoucí se mezi neokázalými barokními domy. Domečky s červenou střechou jako stvořené pro obyvatele země Liliput. Takové jsou Hradčany. Tiny windows and old street lamps add to the charm of Hradcany the Castle dungheap. The palace dates from the 17th century and the excellent sgrafitto work was discovered during restoration. It depicts scenes from the Old Testament. Where time stands still Turn right into Kanovnická street. Modern life has almost passed this quarter by, and with only the slightest imagination you could imagine Mozart’s Prague. There is peace and quiet here, and it seems that the only sounds to be heard are the tunes of the Loreto carillon. Ahead is the white garrison church of St John of Nepomuk. Continue straight on. You are now on Nový Svět (New World), which takes its name from a new quarter, traditionally a poor area. No. 76/1 features a plaque testifying that the famous Danish astronomer Tycho de Brahe lived here. The story goes that Brahe died after overindulging at the court, but the reality is duller – he actually succumbed to liver failure. The house was also the birthplace of Czech tennis star Jaroslav Drobný. Next door is “U Zlaté hrušky” (“At the Golden Pear“) restaurant’, one of Prague’s most romantically situated eateries. You will be charmed by this lane, its narrowness; trees lining one side; the jumble of quaint houses and their uneven facades. There are also many little details, which add to the special atmosphere of Nový Svět: for example the building with a "požární automat" beside the door, an early form of fire alarm. Nový Svět turns into Černínská, an exceedingly charming spot which you have probably seen on many postcards of Prague but wondered where it was. Surrealism in Nový Svět This area has been associated with various artists, including Jan Švankmajer, the famous Surrealist, who owns the Gambra gallery at Černínská Street No. 5. Continue up this street and you will come to the plain, yellow Capuchin m o n a s t e r y. A h e a d l o o m s t h e huge Černín Palace, Prague’s largest palace and now housing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Facing it is the ornate Loreta, famous for its hourly chimes. Our little tour ends here, but you can continue to Loretánská Street and then you can either turn right to Pohořelec or along to the Castle. The atmosphere here is different, and the streets are busier. But whenever you want to avoid the crowds and noise, you can always escape to the secret, magical world of Nový Svět. Kouzelná je slovo, jakým často popisujeme Prahu. A pražské Hradčany skutečně kouzelné jsou. Bohužel mnoho návštěvníků o tom nemá ani tušení. Pojďte nyní s námi do vzrušujícího světa s nejpřísněji střeženými tajemstvími v Praze. Budete okouzleni touto uličkou a jejím půvabem. Guest @ CORINTHIA HOTELS CZECH REPUBLIC [ 15 ] The Dvorak Hall at the Rudolfinum has exceptional acoustics and hosts many concerts of the Prague Autumn Festival “There is always something new to discover in the work of Shostakovich,” says conductor Vassily Sinaisky Concert Hall. As well as conducting orchestras from his native country (Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the Russian State Orchestra among others), Sinaisky, who comes from St Petersburg, has worked with many world orchestras and opera houses. In August we caught up with him in Amsterdam. ° One of the most eagerly awaited guests of the 16th Prague Autumn International Music festival will be the renowned Russian conductor Vassily Sinaisky. He will conduct the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in works by Robert and Clara Schuman, Alexander Skriabin and Dimitri Shostakovich, on 14 September at the Rudolfinum Guest @ Are you in Amsterdam by coincidence or because of work? I have been living here for several years and at the same time I have been working with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which is based here. Just last week I was in London, where I conducted a performance by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at the BBC Proms. Which orchestras are you working with on a permanent basis at the moment? [ 16 ] CORINTHIA HOTELS CZECH REPUBLIC I am the Principal Guest Conductor with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in Britain, and the Principal Conductor in Malmö, Sweden. I am also a guest with many other orchestras, so I travel a lot. What about Russia? You have not forgotten your native country? I teach at the conservatory, when I can, in my native St Petersburg, i.e. where I also studied, so I am in constant contact with my home. Who were your teachers and the personalities that you like to remember? Professor Ilya Musin at the Conservatory in St Petersburg. My fellow students Temirkanov and Gergiev studied under him and today they are famous conductors! After I was awarded the gold medal at the Karajan Competition in Berlin I worked as assistant to Kiril Kondrashin at the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. I also studied under him a lot, so until 1996 I could conduct this orchestra. You have been in Prague several times. With which orchestras? I have worked mainly with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, which I directed three times. But I also had concerts with the Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, in your city. I know Prague well and during my visits I have fallen in love with the city. I always love to come back. It is the same with Czech music – I often conduct works by Smetana, Dvořák and Martinů. How satisfied have you been with Prague hotels? Have you any special accommodation requirements? I do not have any special demands. I want only to have peace so I can relax before and after rehearsals. 1 6 Who will be the soloists at your Prague concert and how did you choose the programme? The programme is a result of our mutual discussions with the organisers of the festival, whom I know well. Indeed I conducted in it back in 1999 – then I conducted the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra; the soloist was violinist Ernst Kovacic. Now, in the piano concerto by Clara Schumann, which is played seldom, the solo part is being played by Czech pianist Jan Simon, and in Shostakovich’s Orchestration of Schumann’s Cello concerto the soloist is the gifted young Russian cellist Nina Kotova. The other two orchestral works are also seldom played – Skriabin‘s ”Prometheus” is about man’s relationship to the universe and is imbued with a philosophy that was not welcome during the last régime; Shostakovich’s ballet suite ”Screw” was also neglected, even though it is wonderful music! How would you describe your relationship to the works of Dmitri Shostakovich, whose work this year ’s Prague Autumn Festival commemorates? I often feature his works and record them on disc for the Chandos record company, which issues all my recordings. It is not only his symphonic works - I also enjoyed recording his less known film music. About three out of the 20 CDs I have recorded with Chandos feature this music, and they were quite successful. There is always something new to discover in the work of Shostakovich, and his film music and the ballet I mentioned are only part of an extensive body of works. We must not forget about his opera works. I have conducted “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” (Editor’s Note: can be translated as “Katerina Ismailova“), the last time at the Komische Oper in Berlin. I often also conduct it at English National Opera. Do you have any time for hobbies? I am a keen on historical literature, so I take a book with me when I am travelling and read when I have a spare moment. I like walking round historic cities, and Prague is a city where history leaves an impression on you at every step. t h I N T E R N A T I O N A L M U S I C F E S T I V A L 12. 9. Beyond the Moon Pražské Corinthia hotely pokračují v podpoře programu „Beyond the Moon”, který pomáhá dětem s život ohrožujícími nemocemi a jejich rodinám. Jsme hrdí, že sponzorujeme tento projekt, který přispívá k lepšímu životu dětí.
