Unit 7 Articles I; Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses. VERBS – Passive Voice, Modals with Past Infinitive. ARTICLES I Angličtina musí opatřit větný člen, jehož jádrem je podstatné jméno, signálem určenosti (definitness) či neurčenosti, kterým je člen určitý, neurčitý nebo člen nulový (tj. nepřítomnost členu). Čeština žádné formální prostředky pro vyjadřování této kategorie nemá a vypomáhá si např. slovy „jeden“, „nějaký“ pro neurčenost a „ten“ pro určenost; využívá zejména slovosledu. Určitý člen má v singuláru i plurálu podobu THE. Je to vlastně oslabené ukazovací zájmeno „ten“. Před vyslovovanými souhláskami se čte [ð], před samohláskami [ði:]: the boy [ð boi] the eye [ði: ai] the year [ðj:] the hour [ði: au] V důrazu (při významu „právě ten“ nebo „ten pravý“, např. Coca-Cola is the drink for hot weather.) a v izolovanějším postavení (například před pauzou danou hledáním vhodného substantiva) se vyslovuje [ði:]. Člen určitý může stát před jednotným i množným číslem, může být od jména, před nímž stojí oddělen jedním nebo více slovy: the last page, the least satisfactory book I have ever read. Neurčitý člen má podobu [] (jako protějšek k [ð]) a [n] (jako protějšek k [ði:]), protějškem k [ði:] je [ei] a [æn] podle postavení. Píše se a a an: a book, a car, a day, a friend x an apple, an egg, an interview, an old coat, an umbrella. Nulový člen je u nepočitatelných substantiv a v množném čísle: a boy – air, an eye – eyes. Výjimečně dovnitř větného členu se klade the v all the …, half the …, both the …, a a(n) v half a (n), such a(n) …, what a(n) … (zvolání). Může, ale nemusí se klást dovnitř za spojení quite a rather + adjektivum (v přísudku i substantivum + substantivum). Neurčitý člen stojí před substantivem (ale až za adjektivem ve sledu as / so / too + adjektivum + substantivum. quite a nice man docela příjemný člověk at quite a reasonable price za docela přijatelnou cenu such an enjoyable evening takový příjemný večer What a good idea! To je dobrý nápad! half an hour půl hodiny half a cup půl šálku He’s a rather good player. Je docela dobrý hráč. He’s rather a good player. He’s as fine a men as you can wish. Je to tak skvělý člověk, jak si jen můžete přát. He’s too slow a runner to win. Je příliš pomalý, než aby vyhrál. Funkce členu obecně Neurčitý člen zařazuje osobu, věc nebo jev do určité třídy jako jednoho z mnoha členů této třídy. Neurčuje blíže jedince. V češtině může být u podstatného jména výraz „jeden, nějaký, jakýsi“. Původně měl anglický neurčitý člen počítací nebo podílnou funkci, což lze dosud nalézt v: a hundred sto a half polovina twice a year / week / day dvakrát ročně / týdně / denně for a day or two na den nebo dva live on a few pounds a day žít z několika liber na den in a word jedním slovem two at a time dva současně, po dvou 92 Unit 7 Articles I; Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses. VERBS – Passive Voice, Modals with Past Infinitive. five pounds a bottle lahev za pět liber Neurčitý člen často signalizuje něco, o čem ještě nebyla zmínka, co je pro posluchače nové, neočekávané, co není určené tak, aby zužovalo na určitého jedince. Bývá např. po there is … I was born in a village. Narodil jsem se na vesnici. A young girl wants to see you. Chce s tebou mluvit nějaké mladé děvče. I know a restaurant here. Znám tu jednu restauraci. There’s a man at the door. Za dveřmi je jakýsi člověk. Určitý člen specifikuje jedince, takže je zřejmé, o kterého jedince jde, tj. zužuje uplatnění substantiva na určitého jedince (na určité jedince). Jde o dvojí druh specifikace: a) Vztahuje se na něco, o čem už byla zmínka, buď v předchozí větě nebo v předchozí souvislosti v prožité situaci: Once upon a time there was a king. Byl jednou jeden král. A ten král měl tři The king had three daughters. dcery. The party will be tonight. Večírek bude dnes večer. b) Vztahuje se na něco, co je mluvčímu známé a o čem soudí, že je známé i posluchači. Jev je tedy specifikován situačním kontextem, předtím o něm možná ani žádná zmínka nebyla: Pass mi the glass. Podej mi (tu) sklenici, prosím. (sklenice je jediná, která v dané situaci přichází v úvahu nebo na ni bylo ukázáno). I’m worried about the situation. (Tato) situace mne znepokojuje. The night is cold. Noc je studená. (tato noc) What’s the climate like. Jaké je (tam) podnebí? Neurčitost množství, případně počtu, může zvýraznit some [sm] (some water, some boys), zatímco jinak [sam] označuje nedostatečné určení vůbec jako české „nějaký, některý“ (Some days everything goes wrong.). Funkce členů podle významového a celovětného uplatnění Generické užití členu Určitý člen ve funkci generalizující označuje celou třídu jedinců nebo jedince pojímá jako zástupce druhu jako typ (v češtině by tu často mohlo být „jako takový“): The whale is a mammal. The dog is a domestic animal. The lily of the valley is white. play the violin, the piano invent the telephone Velryba je savec. Pes je domácí zvíře. Konvalinka je bílá. hrát na housle, na klavír vynalézt telefon Neurčitý člen generalizuje mnohem méně často, je však běžný při srovnáních. V češtině by často u substantiva stálo nepřízvukované přídavné jméno „takový“: A baby needs a father too. A kangaroo can run as fast as a horse. A car is a useful thing to have. The army will make a man of you. 93 Takové malé dítě potřebuje otce. (Takový) klokan dovede běžet stejně rychle jako kůň. (Takové) auto je šikovná věc. Armáda z tebe udělá opravdového muže. Unit 7 Articles I; Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses. VERBS – Passive Voice, Modals with Past Infinitive. Výrazy man, woman jsou bez členu, je-li jich užito obecně se vztahem ke společenské funkci, man – člověk, muž v protikladu k ženě, woman – žena jako protiklad k muži x a man, a woman = (nějaký) muž, (nějaká) žena: the evolution of man vývoj člověka Woman is physically weaker than Žena má menší fyzickou sílu než muž. man. Man is the head but woman turns it. Muž je hlava, ale žena jí otáčí. Did you see a man standing at the Viděl jsi u dveří stát nějakého muže? door? Člen a „unica, jednotliviny“ Určitý člen označuje něco, co je v dané situaci jediné svého druhu, čili co je takzvané „unicum“: the sky, the sun, the moon, the earth (vše v rámci naší sluneční soustavy), the weather (které máme), the Prime Minister, the Queen (v dané zemi), the Mayor starosta (dané obce). Jedinečným je i to, co se navíc označuje superlativem nebo řadovou číslovkou, má-li se tím právě vyčlenit jediné svého druhu. Proto the first man on the moon, the best of all the pupils, Charles the Fourth. Avšak a / the first night (premiéra), best wishes blahopřání, kde se nevyčleňuje. Neurčitý člen označuje, že jednotlivina je nazírána ze zvláštního aspektu, takže se implikuje, že jsou i jiné aspekty – proto už nejde o unica; live under a hot sun, a dark blue sky. Člen ve jmenném přísudku a doplňku Neurčitý člen se užívá ve jmenném přísudku při označování povolání, funkce, národnosti nebo náboženství, ale i při charakteristice. Slovesem je be, become, consider, regard as, take for (považovat za), elect sb st (zvolit někoho něčím), make sb st učinit někoho něčím atd. He is / He became a waiter. Je / Stal se číšníkem. He was famous as an inventor. Proslavil se jako vynálezce. He remained a fisherman. Zůstal rybářem. He’s considered a dangerous man. Je považován za nebezpečného. They take him for a fool. Pokládají ho za hlupáka. He’s regarded as an expert. Je považován za odborníka. He was elected a deputy. Byl zvolen za poslance. Nulový člen je ve jmenném přísudku, doplňku, přístavku a po as tehdy, když v dané situaci (úřadě, postavení nebo funkci) existuje jen jeden jedinec, nejde tedy o zařazení do třídy. He became chairman. Stal se předsedou. They appointed John manager. Jmenovali Johna ředitelem. as captain of the ship jako kapitán lodi become head waiter at the Black stal se vrchním u Černého lva Lion They elected him President. Zvolili ho prezidentem. Člen není u titulu nebo označení hodnosti: the title of doctor the rank of captain titul doktora hodnost kapitána 94 Unit 7 Articles I; Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses. VERBS – Passive Voice, Modals with Past Infinitive. Srov. the King (unicum), the King of England = the English king (unicum); King Edward; Edward was an English king; Edward, King of England; Edward was proclaimed King of England. Určitý člen se užívá tehdy, má-li podstatné jméno u sebe zužující určení (příklad 1 a 2) nebo v jiných než ve vyjmenovaných větných členech (příklad 3 a 4). He became the head of the firm. He’s the doctor I mentioned. I’ve just met the manager. The president delivered a long speech yesterday. Stal se vedoucím firmy. To je ten doktor, o kterém jsem se zmínil. Právě jsem potkal ředitele. Prezident měl včera dlouhý projev. VERBS – Passive Voice, Modals with Past Infinitive. RELATIVE PRONOUNS AND RELATIVE CLAUSES - - WHO, WHOSE, WHOM vztahuje se pouze na osoby, má tři tvary: whom (objektový), of whom (genitiv), whose (přivlastňovací tvar): Mary is the girl who lives next door. Marie je děvče, které bydlí vedle nás. This is the man who came to see us. Tohle je ten pán, který nás přišel navštívit. (who nelze v tomto případě vypustit) The children who(m) we met there were John and Mary. Děti, které jsme tam potkali, byli Jan a Marie. (v tomto případě vypustit lze) These are the children whose parents are dead. Tohle jsou děti, jejichž rodiče zemřeli. ve vztažných větách se whose může vztahovat i k neživotným antecedentům, na rozdíl od tázacích vět: We saw a house whose roof was ablazed. Viděli jsme dům, jehož střecha byla v plamenech. Postpozice předložky (podobně jako v otázkách): You are the man (who) I spoke to yesterday. WHICH - vztahuje se pouze na věci a zvířata, tedy neosoby, - v případě, že zastupuje předmět, možnost vypuštění: I like the trees (which) we were sitting under. x The trees which grow along the street are maples. - of which = whose: We saw a house the roof of which was ablazed. - which se může vztahovat k obsahu předchozí věty, český protějšek je v tomto případě „což“ (hov.) = a to, a ten, a tam: He works harder, which is a good thing. THAT - nesmí před ním být předložka ani čárka, - z hlediska životnosti je neutrální, vztahuje se na osoby i věci: The woman that is crossing the street is our English teacher. x The book that I read yesterday was very interesting. - má význam restriktivní, vymezovací, užívá se ho tedy hlavně po řadových číslovkách, po superlativech, po kolektivních jménech skupin osob (crowd, crew), po neurčitých zájmenech (something, nothing, some, everything, much, all the only, little atd.) Shakespeare is the greatest poet that England has ever had. The crowd that had gathered was dispersed by the rain. Nothing that he does is done badly. That was all that I was able to do. - i that je možno vypustit, vystupuje-li ve vztažné větě jako předmět 97 Unit 7 Articles I; Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses. VERBS – Passive Voice, Modals with Past Infinitive. - WHAT vztahuje se k obsahu celé věty, která následuje: What is done cannot be undone. I will do what I can. They weren’t satisfied with what I told them. Omezovací (vymezující) vztažná zájmena uvádějí vztažnou větu vedlejší, která je nezbytná pro význam nebo hlavní myšlenku věty hlavní. Bez této vztažné věty by věta hlavní neměla smysl (vztažná věta nevypustitelná). Užívá se tu v prvním pádě pro osoby zájmen who nebo méně that, pro neosoby zájmen that nebo méně which; v objektovém a předložkovém pádě pro osoby zájmena that nebo who(m), pro neosoby that nebo méně which. Zájmeno that se v objektovém pádě často vynechává, případná předložka zachovává své místo za slovesem. Přivlastňovací pád má tvar whose pro osoby i neosoby, pro neosoby méně častěji of which. Tento typ se neodděluje čárkou. Příklady: a) The man (who, that) lives opposite has just died. Člověk, který bydlí naproti, právě zemřel. b) In the vast docks that (which) line the banks of the Thames … V obrovských docích, které lemují břehy Temže, … c) The man (that) you see at the desk is the secretary. Muž, kterého vidíte u stolu, je tajemník. d) The book (that, which) I am reading is a novel. Kniha, kterou čtu, je román. The picture about which you are talking has been sold. The picture you are talking about has been sold. Obraz, o kterém mluvíte, byl prodán. e) That’s the lady whose purse has been stolen. To je ta paní, které ukradli peněženku. f) The town has a river the name of which (whose name) I always forget. To město má řeku, jejíž jméno si nemohu a nemohu zapamatovat. The lady The man that that you met there you met there I spoke to I spoke to Tell me I was surprised at It all depends on what After is an undergraduate. is a friend of mine. you propose. he did. you are going to do. has happened, I’ll never speak to him. Popisná (nevymezující) vztažná zájmena, tj. vztažná zájmena neomezující, nerestriktivní, jsou who a which. Uvádějí vztažnou větu vedlejší, která pouze doplňuje nepodstatným způsobem větu hlavní (vztažná věta vypustitelná). Je to buď: 1. věta vložená, která může být vypuštěna, aniž se poruší smysl věty hlavní: From the window of her bedroom, which was immediately over the shop, she could see the busy roadway below. Z okna ložnice, která byla přímo nad prodejnou, měla výhled dolů na živou ulici. 2. připojená vztažná věta, místo které by stejně dobře mohla stát věta hlavní připojená nějakou souřadnou spojkou: He has a grown-up daughter, whom he hasn’t seen yet. Má dospělou dceru, kterou ještě neviděl. 98 Unit 7 Articles I; Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses. VERBS – Passive Voice, Modals with Past Infinitive. Když byl v nemocnici, předčítali mu z knihy povídek, kterou kdysi dostal k narozeninám.
