Cycle trails
Q Around the Jizera Mountains. This
route is designated for fit cyclists who probably
do not need to take the cycle bus to Bedřichov.
This option does exist, however. From Bedřichov,
head to the hunting chalet at Nová Louka and
then to the intersection of various routes which is
known as Hřebínek. There is a kiosk with refreshments there. Then turn left and head along the
good quality forest road which will lead you to
the intersection called Bílá kuchyně after 1.5 km.
There is a beautiful view of the Jizera Mountains
from there, but the most important thing is that
the road now descends sharply along the Jeřice
Stream Valley to Oldřichov v Hájích. The first
structure you will come to is in the area called Na
Pilách. Turn right onto the main road, cross over
the railway crossing and head up the short climb
to the Oldřichov Saddle (there is the option of
taking refreshments in the stylised Hausmanka
restaurant). The pleasant Viničná route turns
off there. After passing through beautiful forest
areas and past a number of cliffs, you will come
to picturesque Ferdinandov and then to Hejnice.
Hejnice is an important place of pilgrimage with
the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.
You should be sure to visit the church. Head from
Hejnice to Bílý Potok, where an eight-kilometre
climb to the popular Smědava chalet begins and
then continue to the Kasárenská silnice (Barracks
Road). Head along this road up a slight rise to the
kiosk at Na Knajpě. Return to Hřebínek along the
Štolpišská silnice (the Štolpich Road) via the Krásná Máří lookout (a lookout point offering a beautiful view of the Frýdlant area and the Ještěd and
Lusatian Mountains) and then back to Jablonec
via Bedřichov. The length of the route is ca 80 km
(without using the cycle bus). Designated for fit
cyclists.
Q The Odra – Nisa international cycle
trail. A successful joint project of the three
countries (Germany, the Czech Republic and
Poland), through which the route passes. It is
a 591 km long route leading from the spring of
the Lužická Nisa in the Jizera Mountains to the
Baltic Sea (Ostsee). The first stage of this cycle
trail starts in the Czech Republic near the municipality of Lučany nad Nisou at the spring of
the Lužická Nisa River. The route continues
along the flank of the Černostudniční Ridge
and you will be able to see the stream grow fast
from your bicycle saddle. Upon passing through
the “glass” town of Jablonec nad Nisou, it takes
in further tributaries and becomes a real river.
The most beautiful view of the entire Jablonec
Valley comes from the Petřín lookout, through
which the route passes. Head to Liberec across
the footbridge near the municipality of Rádlo
and along the route, which deliberately avoids
the town. The further destinations and interesting tips along the way: Ještěd, Hamrštejn
Castle and Grabštejn. Once on German territory, the route enters the municipality of Hartau
and you will soon come to 750-year-old town
of Zittau (the narrow gauge steam railway is
worth a visit) and the spa towns of Oybin and
Jonsdorf. The next stage will take you through
Lower Silesia, Lower Lusatia, Labuska Country,
the Warthe River plain, the Lower Odra Valley,
Western Vorpommern, the Stettiner Haff and on
to the Baltic Sea. For further information, go to
www.nisaops.cz. Do not hesitate to do this trip
– just wait for some beautiful weather and head
off on a trip of discovery.
Q The footbridge between Dobrá Voda
and Rádlo. Crosses the frequented I/65 road.
The blue and red marked cycle trails head across
the bridge.
Q The Pašerácká cyklostezka (the Smugglers’ Cycle Trail) – this 40 km long route with
four stops connects the Hrádek, Chrastava and
Frýdlant micro-regions. It passes near the border with Germany and Poland and in places also
crosses it. There is the option of connecting with
the cycle trails in those countries.
page 3
Q The Krakonošova stezka ER – 2 (the
ER-2 Giant Mountains Trail). This cycle trail leads
from Bad Schandau in Germany through Frýdlant, Nové Město pod Smrkem and the northern
flank of the Polish Giant Mountains and it ends
in Lubawka.
Q Cycle tourism trails around Štěpánka.
These two routes offer something for everybody who likes beautiful nature and especially
wonderful views of the landscape. The routes
are marked with combined road and band
markings – both are very easy to follow. The
Famberka and Planýrka circuit.
Q The Mlýnská (Mill) Cycle Trail.
The “Mill” thematic cycle trail will take you from
the square in Frýdlant up to the Frýdlant château. This section is still numbered as 3016 and
it runs parallel with the “Krakonošová” and “Pohodová” trails. It turns off at the château as route
number 3059 and takes you along a beautiful,
physically undemanding valley through the
Krásný Les forest and Řasnice, where you can
also look at the famous blacksmith’s workshop
of Ondřej Stelzig, the leader of a peasant uprising at the end of the 17th century. At the end
of Horní Řasnice, the trail again turns off under
route number 3006 to Jindřichovice, at the beginning of which you can visit the Žijící skanzen
(Living Open Air Museum). The next section
runs parallel to the “Environs of Jindřichovice, to
the heights of ideals and the valley of the soul”
teaching trail (Okolím Jindřichovic, za výšinami
ideálů a do údolí duše) which is also suitable
for cyclists, so you can also ride along its entire length. In the middle of the municipality,
turnoff 3006B heads to the left and it will take
you to the Kukačka border crossing point. Turn
right about 700 metres after the border and
the Polish cycle trail will take you to Czarci mlyn
in Cziernawa Zdrój. This is a functioning mill
which was originally water driven, but now has
an electrical drive. You can buy freshly baked
bread from the flour which is milled there. From
there, you can return to the Czech Republic on
the Krakonošova cyklostezka (Giant Mountains
Cycle Trail) via Nové Město or you can continue
further to Swieradów Zdrój. Another possibility
is to turn left 700 metres after the aforementioned Kukačka border crossing point and to
head to the Czocha château and the Lesnianský
lakes. The cycle trail is marked in both directions
at the main intersections with signs with the
logo of a wind mill and the legend “Mlýnská”.
Unfortunately, it has not been possible to negotiate a single route number for the trail from the
beginning to the end, but possibly the number
is not so important for a pleasant bicycle ride
with interesting experiences.
www.lunaria-jindrichovice.cz/cyklostezka
Q The Jára Cimrman Cycle Trail:
“Around Liptákov by Bicycle”. The cycle
trail is part of the project involving an extensive
network of new cycle trails in the territory of
the municipalities of the Tanvald Micro-Region
which leads through Zlatá Olešnice, Tanvald
- Šumburk, Sladká díra to Protržená přehrada
(the Breached Dam), it disappears at the Jizerka
- Orle Polish border and connects the Tanvald
area with the cycle trails in the Bohemian Paradise, the Giant Mountains, the Jablonec area
and Poland.
Q The first single track in Jablonec nad
Nisou. GPS: N 50° 44‘ 18.302“ E 15° 10‘ 47.928“,
N 50° 44‘ 15.26“ E 15° 10‘ 47.406“. What is a single
track? This is the name for a winding forest terrain cycle trail which is environmentally friendly,
safe for cyclists and has a narrowly delineated
track. They were first built in Great Britain and
in the USA and there has been one in operation
in Jablonec nad Nisou since spring last year – it
is the first in the Czech Republic. The trail was
constructed by mountain bike volunteers under
the supervision of the project initiator, Rebel
Bike, a member of the Czech Mountain Bike Association. You will find the first testing 160 metres of this terrain cycle track between the Břízky
sports facility and the Mšeno Reservoir.

The Czech genius Jára Cimrman, a dramatist, inventor, explorer, in
whose footsteps many have tried in vain to follow, is irrevocably associated with this region, which is born out by some of the theatrical plays
discovered in the forester’s lodge under Mariánská hora by a scientific collective led by Doctor Svěrák and Professor Smoljak. It has been possible to
map several of his stops during his wanderings. One day, Jára Cimrman
came from Pojizeří by train ... and after some time his steps were lost across
the border in Silesia ...

The Jizera Mountains are among
the most beautiful
hiking areas in Bohemia. It is possible
to spend a pleasant
holiday there in
both summer
and winter. The
plateau of the Jizera
Mountains offers
a range of trips
for hikers, cyclists
and cross-country
skiers. During your
wanderings, it is
also pleasant to visit
the Jizera Mountain
lookout towers and
many other viewing points. Unlike
the higher Giant
Mountains formed
with barren plains,
high ridges and
hills, from which
you can see into the
distance, there are
almost no distant
views among the
deep forests and
cliffs of the Jizera
Mountains. For this
reason, the Jizera
Mountains hiking
and mountain associations began
to sponsor the construction of lookout
towers at the end of
the 19th century. At
that time, this was
a highly prestigious
matter. It can be said
that they all arose
at approximately
the same time, but
some of them have
disappeared over
time. Here, we can
offer you a list of
several stone and
metal beauties
which are worth
visiting . . .
Do you know where these names come from?
The ancient Celts named our mountains......
ISAR = swift/wild (river), in our case the River Jizera. This name has parallels in France,
Germany, Holland and other European countries.
RIGION = a tribal territory or also a kingdom.
ASK – KÉT = an ash forest. It is thought that in this case, this involves the Czech name
“Ještěd”.
SUDÉTA = mountains of wild boar, in Czech “Sudety”, in English “the Sudetenland”.
It is debated as to which mountains are meant. The theory that this involves the Giant
Mountains (Krkonoše) of the Jizera Mountains has the most supporters.
If you wish to learn more about our ancestors, we took this information from Zdeněk
Knápek’s book “A Book for every Celt: the Truth about the Celtic Origins of our Nation”.

Lookout points
Q Bílá skála – is the highest point of the
Příchovice Ridge. It is a metaquartzitic block
rising above the forest. A cross of the Roman
Catholic parish was placed on the top of the cliff
in 2000 – it is a replica of the pilgrimage cross
from Mount Tábor.
Q Dračí kámen (675 m above sea level) – this
a popular hiking spot in Kateřinky above Liberec. The lookout point is associated with a legend
about dragons. It provides a nice view both of
Liberec and Ještěd and of Fojtka and Mníšek.
Q Frýdlantské cimbuří (900 m above sea
level) – is one of the most distinctive cliff formations in the Polední kameny Ridge (mountaineering terrain) and it is accessible along the
yellow marked trail which turns off from the trail
along the Černý potok valley. It has two peaks
separated by a chasm. The cliff top offers a
nice view of the lower positioned Polední zub
and also the Upper Směda valley. It is an independent nature reserve – beech woods and dry
spruce groves with rowan on the steep slopes of
the Černý potok ravine with waterfalls.
Q Hajní kostel (730 m above sea level) – is
located in the lower part of the Polední kameny
Ridge. The original name of the Hainskirche can
be translated as “the church in the grove” or as
“the pagan sanctuary” and it is associated with
pagan stories and other legends. It provides a
view of the Směda valley and the Frýdlant area.
Q Holubník (1,070 m above sea level) – this
Jizera Mountains peak with a lookout cliff offers
a magnificent panoramic view of Smrk, Paličník,
Smědavská hora, Jizera, the Giant Mountains,
Černá studnice.
Q Huťská vyhlídka – is a new lookout point
with a view of the Černostudniční Ridge and the
Giant Mountains with a panoramic map and descriptions of the individual places. The lookout
point is located near the “Fipobex” excursion
area in Pěnčín. You can also see the new animal
enclosures (goats and sheep) at the goat farm
from it.
Q Jizera (1,122 m above sea level) – is the
second highest peak of the Czech section of the
Jizera Mountains which can be reached along a
rocky path from the Štolpišská silnice. It provides
a wide view of the mountain forests.
Q Jezdec (500 m above sea level) – is located
near Liberec. It was once a small guard castle for
the route from Bohemia to Frýdlant and Lusatia,
but nowadays it provides a view of the Černá
Nisa Valley.
Q Kočičí kameny (570 m above sea level)
– the lookout point is located to the north of the
municipality of Bílý Potok pod Smrkem, near the
well-known Hubertka chalet, at the intersection
of a number of hiking trails. The lookout offers
a view of the Smědá Valley, the municipality of
Bílý Potok and the northern slopes of the Jizera
Mountains.
Q Kovadlina (520 m above sea level) – the
lookout point can be reached from Lidové sady
in Liberec and it is the highest point of the hill
called Kovářský kámen. The view from it to the
Harcov Valley is limited.
Q Krásná Máří (900 m above sea level) –
is one of the best known and most impressive Jizera Mountain lookout points in the
Hejnice area of the mountains. It owes its high
visitor numbers to its location on the Jizera Trail.
A turnoff from the Jizera Trail will take you along
a stony path to the lookout point which offers
a wide view of the Frýdlant area and especially
of the Upper Smědá Valley.
Q Lysé skály (620 m above sea level) – this
is one of the most jagged groups of cliffs in the
Jizera Mountains and it offers one of the nicest
views of the northern slopes of the mountains
from Poledník to Smrk, Liberec and the Ještěd
Ridge.
Q Martinská stěna (490 m above sea level)
– is located above the Černá Nisa Valley in
Kateřinky. A natural amphitheatre was created
there in the 1920s. Nowadays, it is possible to
use the repaired lookout tower with its view to
the south.
Q Na Hrátkách (465 m above sea level) – this
two-peaked hill above Ferdinandov was once a
venue with a summer theatre stage and a small
forest restaurant. Nowadays, it is only a site with
a poorly accessible cliff.
Q Olivetská hora (886 m above sea level)
– is located in the heart of the Jizera Mountains
and it is surrounded by green forests. The New
Pilgrimage Track to the Hejnice Madonna passes
nearby.
Q Ořešník (800 m above sea level) – is
a dominant cliff which towers above Hejnice
and is the most frequent destination for trips
from Hejnice. There has been a cross on it since
time immemorial. The lookout offers a beautiful
view of the Hejnice church.
Q Paličník (940 m above sea level) – is perhaps the most impressive of all the lookouts in
the Jizera Mountains. The massive cliffs on the
steep slopes above the Hájený potok stream are
used as mountaineering terrain. It is easiest to
get to Paličník from Bílý Potok along the yellow

The spirit Muhu. In the eastern section of the Černostudniční Ridge, there is a group of cliffs which is called Muchov. This name apparently comes from the name of the cliff spirit Mugu or also Muhu, whom our ancestors apparently worshipped as one of their gods in
the times of ancient paganism. When they later accepted Christianity, they continued to tell tales of him as a good spirit and a protector of
the region. Like all powerful spirits, Muhu was also able to change his appearance in a multitude of ways. Sometimes people saw him as a
hermit or a monk, while others saw him as a wayfarer or even as a knight. People told many stories about the spirit Muhu – let us mention
at least two: Muhu was always the defender of the animals and the birds. For that reason, he became very angry about the actions of the
inhabitants of Stanovsko, who did not make their living by means of honest work, but by catching birds. They then sold the birds either into
captivity or for selected delicacies on the tables of the rich. Muhu warned the people of Stanovsko many times, most frequently in the form of
a poor wayfarer who came into the village and visited the individual bird catchers. But, it was in vain. And so he decided to punish the people
of Stanovsko. In 1469, when Návarov was under siege during the reign of George of Poděbrady, its former owners called upon the people
of Zittau and the soldiers of the Lords of Biberštejn for help. Muhu made use of this and led the soldiers to Stanovsko by deceit, whereupon
the soldiers looted it and burnt it down and the villagers escaped with only their lives. Muhu, in the form of a knight, then strongly warned
the people of Stanovsko against any further bird catching. For this reason, they all left the region together. The site of their village was only
resettled by new settlers more than one century later. The hermit, Filip, who was often seen on Muchov according to folk tales, was also none
other than the spirit of the local cliffs. To this day, people go to see the remains of a house in the Muchov forest which are called “Na Filipově”.
Apparently, it was built by an unknown penitent who settled in the region and helped everybody who needed aid. He was especially well
versed in curative herbs which he carefully collected and dried and then distributed to the ill. It was only after the first doctor appeared in
Hamry that this enigmatic philanthropist disappeared even more mysteriously than he had first appeared.
More legends can be found in Dr. Eva Koudelková’s book Legends from the Glassmakers’ Region – Folk Tales from the Jizera Mountains and Foothills from the
Bor publishing house, www.naklbor.cz.
Frýdlant area and the entire northern slopes of
the Jizera Mountains. On the eastern side, it is
also possible to see Bukovec and the ridge of the
Western Giant Mountains. It is an independent
nature reserve – a protected old beech stand
with English Gray Harewood, spruce and elm.
Q Pohanské kameny u Višňové (297 m
above sea level) – this consists of a group of
granite cliffs near the municipality of Višňová.
The German natural scientist von Vichrow, in
whose memory there is a plaque on one of the
cliffs, drew attention to the natural origins of the
stone kettles at the beginning of the 19th century. According to ancient findings, it was the
site of pagan sacrifices as early as 5,000 years
ago. It still has a mystical importance.
Q Polední kameny (1,006 m above sea level)
– several lookout points are located on the
ridge of the upper Polední kameny above the
Frýdlantské cimbuří. A turnoff from the yellow
marked hiking trail leads to the highest point
of the ridge. The Polední kameny massif also
includes Půlený kámen with the highest cliff
kettles in the Jizera Mountains. It offers views of
the Frýdlant area and the central section of the
Jizera Mountains with the mountain Jizera.
Q Ptačí kupy (1,013 m above sea level) – this
consists of seven cliff groups which are situated
in a wide circle. They are located near the trail
leading from Hřebínek to Krásná Máří.
Q Pytlácké kameny (975 m above sea level)
– according to an old legend, the old poacher
Hennrich once lived there. The area is accessible
along a steep turnoff from the green marked
track which follows the Central Jizera Ridge. The
lookout from the rocks offers a panoramic view
of the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains and a view of the Great Jizera Meadow
(Velká jizerská louka).
Q Skalní hrad (600 m above sea level) – this
is one of the granite crenellations in the beech
woods stretching from Oldřichov v Hájích.
It features in old bandit stories and according to
legend a wooden fort once stood there. It provides a view of the meadows and fields of the
Frýdlant area, the western section of the Jizera
Mountains and the distant peaks of the Upper
Lusatian Mountains.
Q Sněžné věžičky (1,055 m above sea level)
– a group of cliffs at the end of the track to the
peak of Černá hora.
Q The cliff lookout point on Tanvaldský
Špičák – formerly Fanternstein, it is located
near the lookout tower. It offers an engaging

Q Šulíkova skála (650 m above sea level)
– a natural lookout point along the way from
Velké Hamry to Jírův kopec and on to Příchovice.
Mystery lovers will be able to examine the
strange groupings boulders there which have
given rise to many questions over the years.
According to some people, this is an ancient
burial ground, but according to others it is similar to a group of boulders cleared from the fields.
The cliff massif called Šulíkova skála is located in
the saddle of the south-western ridge of Jírův
kopec. This not overly well-known lookout point
offers a view of the Kamenice River Valley and
Tanvald, part of Velké Hamry, the Černostudniční
Ridge, Buková hora and Tanvaldský Špičák. The
mysterious name of the lookout point is probably associated with the nickname for some of
the former inhabitants who cheated (in Czech
“šulit”) during card games.
Q Terezínka (623 m above sea level) – this
lookout cliff on the flank of Mount Muchov was
modified as a walled lookout point with a staircase in 1853. The owner of the Tanvald cotton
mill, Johann Mayer, had it built and he named it
after his wife Terezia. Mayer, who lived with his
family in Vienna, also had the nearby Bálovka
villa built as his holiday home. Terezínka is easily
accessible from Tanvald along the red marked
hiking track. The walk can be extended to include the climb up the Muchov cliff massif (787
m above sea level) where according to legend
page 6
the spirit of the Jizera Mountains, Muhu, lives.
Q Tišina (873 m above sea level) – this involves cliffs on the south-western side of Smrk.
It lies not far from the Francouzská cesta (French
Track) and it offers a view of Bílý Potok and
Libverda.
Q Trniště (710 m above sea level) – the lookout point can be found in a cliff formation on
Vysoký hřeben above Janov nad Nisou. The
Hašlerova Chalet once stood nearby with an
18 m high lookout tower, but this has been replaced by a modern structure (Hotel Murano).
Q Vodopád Jedlové (waterfall) (cca 775 m
above sea level) – this is situated above Josefův
Důl. Jedlový Důl was declared a nature reserve
in 1992. It consists of a mosaic of forest growth
with original spruces, beech trees and firs, with
the River Jedlová flowing through it and with
several waterfalls. There is a learning trail there.
Q Vodopád Štolpichu (the Štolpich waterfall) (750 m above sea level) – it is accessible
along the red marked track from the railway station in Hejnice. The “Štolpichy” is an independent nature reserve with natural beech woods
and a unique stand of yew trees. The Malý (Bílý)
and Velký (Černý) Štolpich rivers flow through
the territory. Numerous cliff formations, moun-

Other points
of natural interest:
Q The Bílá Nisa River - rises on the Klikvová
louka meadow above Bedřichov, underground,
a 1,761 m long canal drains part of the water to
the neighbouring valley where it fills the Jablonec reservoir.
Q Bílá skála, Srbská – Horní Řasnice
– a quartz cliff formation, unusual cliff shapes.
Q The protected tree-lined avenue
- Josefův Důl, 11 oaks near the building of the
cinema.
Q Historicko - přírodovědná stezka
Nové Město pod Smrkem (the Nové Město
pod Smrkem Historical – Natural History Trail)
– the trail was opened in 1993, it has 27 stations and it passes through three circuits – the
yellow circuit (2,430 m), the green circuit (8,600 m)
and the red circuit (10,130 m). The trail passes
through the historically and naturally remarkable points of the town and its wider environs.

taineering terrain and in recent years the nesting sites of peregrine falcons make this an even
more attractive place to visit.
Q The Černá studnice lookout point
(869 m above sea level) – is located in close
proximity to the well-known lookout tower, the
view from it is limited.
Q The lookout points above Libverda –
are part of the local lookout circuit; this involves
5 attractive lookout points equipped with a
wooden stand and an information sign. Each of
them contains one of the local legends associated with place name related to the lookout point
and a panoramic photo, an orientational map of
the municipality and a pictorial relief map of the
Frýdlant area and part of the Jizera Mountains.
The local information centre has an information
flier with an orientational map and the stamps
to go with it.
Q The lookout point above Smržovka
(678 m above sea level) – a knoll with a conspicuous cliff group simply called Vyhlídka
(Lookout Point) rises directly above the centre
of Smržovka. The cliffs are up to thirty metres
high there and the main one consists of several
blocks separated from one another by chasms
and ravines. The most massive rock is known
for the ledges which embrace it. One of these
is home to a giant stone bowl which is surrounded by legend and known as the Devil’s
Well (Čertova studánka). Supposedly, Vyhlídka
was home to a smitten elf called Sklenařík. Despite having been rejected, he gave his beloved
a bowl of ducats and provided her husband
with a glass kiln. Then he cried and cried until he
had filled the deep stone bowl.
Q The lookout point at Dobrá Voda
(630 m above sea level) – also known as Schnuppstein is an unusual cliff which rises about 7 m
above the surrounding terrain. It is located on
the road leading from Vrkoslavice to Dobrá Voda.
It offers an impressive view of not only Jablonec
nad Nisou, but also the Jizera Mountains.
Q Vyhlídka v Pekle (The lookout point in
Hell) (700 m above sea level) – “Juselkoppe”
– is a stone terrace above Josefův Důl, from
where medieval border guards apparently used
to send signals. The lookout provides a view of
the valley, the reservoir’s side dam and the adjacent forested mountain slopes. The lookout cliff
which has stairs and a handrail has long been
shrouded in myths. The devil apparently spent
time on the rocks and the outline of the rear part
of his body is marked in the peak of the cliff.

From Marek Řeháček’s introduction to the book “Thousand Metre Peaks in the Jizera Mountains”:
“The central part of the mountains is characterised by its highland plateau which is located at an altitude above sea level between 800 and
1,000 m above sea level. In the north, slopes covered by characteristic beech growths with abundantly scattered granite cliffs descend to the
valley of the River Smědá and to the Frýdlant Downs which are historically closely associated with them. The southern and south-western
slopes of the mountains descend more gradually to the Valley of the Nisa, the Kamenice and the Jizera Rivers and, especially in the Jablonec
area, they form a characteristic landscape of sober mountain municipalities with maintained environs. In the north-east, the mountains
pass into the Polish part (Góry Izerskie), whose natural character is essentially the same as in the Czech part, except that they do not include
compact beech growths. In 1968, the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Region was established in the territory of the Czech Jizera
Mountains with an area of 368 km² and this is one of them oldest large-scale protected areas in the Czech Republic.
The highest peak of the Czech section of the mountains is Smrk (1,124 m), while the highest peak in the entire mountain range is Wysoka
Kopa (1,126 m) on the Polish side”.

The Frýdlant château
and Albrecht von Wallenstein
The Frýdlant estate belonged to Albrecht
von Wallenstein between 1622 and 1634: a
relatively short period. His reign there did not
leave any specific traces, for example in any
new buildings or at least the modification of
the castle or château. Frýdlant was not the
place where Wallenstein built and developed
his seat (that was in Jičín), but it became part
of his prospering economic base which was
so important in his successful prosecution of
wars.
Despite that, however, Albrecht von Wallenstein became one of the most significant
figures in the history of the Frýdlant château. In 1628, he was awarded the title of
Duke of Frýdlant and in his day he was also
called “Friedland”. In this way, this powerful
man spread the name of his Frýdlant estate
around all of Europe.

Who was Andreas (Ondřej) Stelzig?
“The Frýdlant Kozina” - Andreas Stelzig was a true son of his age. We admittedly do not know what he looked like, but it is clear from his entire
life story that he was a bold person who commanded great authority and popularity among his peers....
In the 17th century, the Frýdlant estate belonged to Franz Ferdinand, the Count of Gallas. The living conditions on the estate were unsuitable
for the serfs and this therefore led them to take a complaint to the authorities in 1679. Secret meetings were used to prepare for the event, representatives of the individual villages were chosen and money was collected to secure the needs of the delegation, which was to present a petition
to Emperor Leopold I on behalf of all the serfs. The blacksmith from Dolní Řasnice, Ondřej Stelzig, was the main organiser of the entire movement
from the very beginning. The petition contained 16 articles and it was a summary of the extensive complaints concerning the obligations of the
serfs on that estate. It was submitted on 13.11. of the same year in Brandýs nad Labem, where the emperor was staying at that time. The rebels did
not receive a reply, so they held further secret meetings in the Frýdlant area about their next steps, where Stelzig was once again the main speaker.
Meanwhile, the Liberec Sherriff, František Flick, requested the administrator in Valtice, Jiří Speeth, who had served on the Frýdlant estate for a long
time, both under the House of Gallas and under the House of von Wallenstein, to comment on the individual points contained in the petition on
19. 12. 1679. He did so and refuted each point, one after the other. The establishment therefore gathered together a sufficient amount of material to
form the basis for an extensive official counter-petition. The arguments of the Frýdlant establishment were therefore victorious.
Count Gallas expressly demanded that Stelzig should be given the strictest punishment and it took almost a year for him to be sentenced. At
the beginning of 1682, Stelzig was banished forever from the Czech Kingdom and from the lands of the Czech crown and sentenced to ten years
of forced work at the fortress of Ráb in Hungary. After the sentence had been passed, Gallas sentenced the reeves to the loss of their fiefs and fined
them 300 gulden. An enforced peace reigned on the estate after the further defeat of the anti-establishment movement and after the sentencing of
Ondřej Stelzig and the other participants. It never occurred to Count Gallas or to his officials that Stelzig could ever return. However, he managed to
do so and his return after five years gave rise to a new wave of unrest, this time in 1688.
All that remains of Stelzig today are some nice stories, a few shards and a monogrammed axe in his smithy. If you want to find out more about this figure
from history, read the chapter from Jaroslav Čechura’s book Peasant Rebellions or the chapter by Rudolf Anděl in the book The Frýdlant Year of 1680.

Who was Josef Václav Scheybal?
One of the most important representatives of Czech ethnographical drawing. He
attended the grammar school in Turnov and the Philosophy Faculty of Charles
University in Prague, where he studied ethnography and art history.
He created thousands of drawings that document defunct and destroyed monuments. They are included in museum collections and are displayed at exhibitions,
in encyclopaedias of folk art and in ethnographical publications. He wrote monographs on artists and documented the history of the region and its folk architecture. He is also the co-author of many ethnographical publications.
He illustrated historical and ethnographical books and was a freelancer specializing in landscape drawing. Thanks to Josef V. Scheybal, the region of Liberec has
unique and extensive artistic documentation that captures its folk art monuments,
landscape and nature.

Q The Rieger Track – a short teaching trail
which leads through the Jizera Valley from
Spálov to Semily (or, of course, the other way
round). It is interesting for tourists, geologists
and photographers, while lovers of the railway
while also find something to enjoy, because
the old railway line which copies the course of
the river includes a number of beautiful and
unusually built tunnels. This track is only closed
to cyclists – it is prohibited to ride a bicycle on
the track! As is the case with a number of other
places, it is best to travel there by train, because
then you do not have to return to where your
car is parked. And it is also better to head down
the Jizera, i.e. from Spálov to Semily, precisely
because of the trains, even though the signs on
the learning trail are numbered in the upstream
direction – in the other direction, the best
awaits us at the end and we will be well motivated to continue right to the end of the track.
The trip places medium demands on walkers,
but it is not suitable for small children or even
for prams.

Who was the mysterious
Doctor Kittel and what is his legacy?
Jan Josef Antonín Eleazar Kittel (1704 – 1783)
was a famous doctor from the border of the
Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains.
He came from a family of bonesetters and
was gifted with exceptional curative skills. He
treated aristocrats from the environs, from
Prague and from Vienna and the poor from
the wider area. He grew curative herbs at his
home and used them to make ointments. He
also used the curative waters from the local
well. People had their own explanation for
his talent and later wealth .... they suspected
that he was in league with the devil and they
called him the “Faust of the Jizera Mountains”.
He supposedly flew among his patients by
night on his cape and he was able to control the ravens using books of magic. In his
enormous and mysterious house called Burk,
he had a dissecting room, human skeletons,
a glasshouse with rare herbs and a spa for
water treatments. When he got older, he built
a school, a well with healing water, a manse
and a church (which was built next to Burk)
with his own money in order to save his bartered soul. Nowadays, we know that this man
was exceptional, that he was progressive and
daring for his time, that he followed his heart
and that he was able to renew the long lost
connection between people and nature.

ZOO Liberec – A learning adventure
The Liberec zoological gardens are the oldest zoo in the historical territory of
Czechoslovakia. They were established in 1919 and as such they will celebrate the
90th anniversary of their establishment this year. The Liberec Zoo has around 170
species of animals with a total number of just under 1000 individual animals. Of
that, 300 animals are classified in the EEP, ESB and RDB European breeding programs. These national programs endeavour to protect animal species which are
threatened with extinction.
The Liberec Zoo is unique in the entire republic due to its organisation – it also
includes the Divizna Ecological Education Centre and the Archa Centre for Animals
in Need with a station for handicapped animals. As a unit, the Liberec Zoo therefore offers a wide range of training programs, comprehensive environmental training services and care for injured animals from nature.
Only the Liberec Zoo offers the opportunity to see white tigers (the only ones
in the Czech Republic), golden takin (the only ones in Europe), blue nahury (the
only ones in the Czech Republic), the largest group of Somali donkeys in the Czech
Republic, the largest group of chimpanzees in the Czech Republic, the most comprehensive collection of birds of prey in Europe or a breeding pair of kea parrots
from New Zealand.

WHERE TO
F I N D WAT E R
The catastrophic
floods of 1897 led
to the establishment of a unique
project involving
the construction of
reservoirs in the
Jizera Mountains,
the realisation of
which was
supposed to regulate the water levels
and water management in the entire
region in the future.
Water structures
Q Bedřichov, GPS: N 50° 49‘ 12.09“ E 15° 08‘
10.85“– the reservoir lies on the Černá Nisa and it
was constructed by the company F. Ackermann
from Klagenfurt in 1902 - 1906 according to the
plans of Dr. Otto Intze MSc. This is a gravity dam
built in a curve with a radius of curvature of 300 m,
a height of 23.5 m above its foundations and
a length of 340 m at the top. The total volume
of the reservoir is up to 2.1 million m³. It is part
of a hydroelectric facility, which also includes
the almost 4.4 km long penstock with a surge
chamber and the Rudolfov hydroelectric power
plant. Recreation and fishing only occur sporadically here due to the unfavourable mountain
conditions.
Q Bílá Desná (the Breached Dam), GPS: N 50°
48‘ 04.46“ E 15° 16‘ 37.26“ – the earth damn on
the Bílá Desná was built by the Prague company
of Schön and Sons in 1911 – 1915. It rose 17.8 m
above its foundations, was 244 m long at the
crest and created a space for the retention of
water in a valley reservoir with a total volume of
400,000 m³ of water. On 18th September 1916,
just 10 months after it received its final approval,
the dam ruptured and the break wave caused
an enormous catastrophe in the municipalities
along the Bílá Desná, the Desná and the Kamenice Rivers. The catastrophe claimed 62 human
victims. It has been declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1996.
Q Mlýnice, GPS: N 50° 50‘ 31.48“ E 15° 01‘
46.56“ – it was built by the Viennese company
H. Rella and Nephew on the Albrechtice stream
in 1904 - 1906 according to the plans by professor Dr Otto Intze MSc. This is a gravity reservoir
and it has been built in a curve with a radius of
curvature of 200 m, with a height of 22 m above
its foundation and with a length of 159 m at the
crest. The valley reservoir holds a total water
volume of 271,000 m³. In summer, the reservoir
is used for recreation and fishing.
Q Mšeno, GPS: N 50° 44‘ 10.15“ E 15° 10‘ 22.55“
– the Mšeno reservoir is also the work of professor Dr Otto Intze MSc. It was built by the Prague
company of Franz Schön and Sons in 1906 - 1909
on the Mšeno stream and it is currently the largest inner city area of water to the west of Lake
Geneva. The dam was built in a wide valley in a
curve with a radius of curvature of 350 m and it
has a height of 20 m above its foundations and
a length of 425.5 m at the top. It has been declared a national technical monument. The total
volume amounts to 2.786 million m³ of water. It
includes tunnels leading from the Lužická Nisa
and the Bílá Nisa. The reservoir is an integral part
of the recreational facilities in Jablonec.
Q Souš, GPS: N 50° 47‘ 28.9“ E 15° 19‘ 05.73“
– this hydraulic structure was built according
to the plans of Wilhelm Plenkner MSc in 1911
- 1915 on the site of the former settlement of
Darré on the Černá Desná. The dam was built by
the Combined Company for Railway Construction and Operations of Vienna. It is an earth dam
which is 25 m high above its foundations and
364 m long at the top. It holds a total volume
of 7.561 million m3 of water. The water surface
takes up an area of around 86 ha and the depth
corresponds to the height of the dam. In 1974,
the reservoir was transformed into a drinking
water source for the Jablonec and Tanvald areas
and swimming is therefore prohibited!
Swimming pools,
water areas
Q Fojtka, GPS: N 50° 49‘ 34.85“ E 15° 03‘ 28.14“
– it was built in 1904 - 1906 on a stream of the
same name, under the village of Fojtka near the
municipality of Mníšek. The work was undertaken by the Viennese company H. Rella and
Nephew according to a design by professor Dr.
Otto Intze MSc. The mass of the dam is built in
a curve with a radius of curvature of 175 m, it is
16 m high above its foundations and it is 146.2 m
long at the crest. The reservoir holds up to
323,000 m³. It is used for swimming and fishing
in the summer months.
Q Harcov, GPS: N 50° 46‘ 15.44“ E 15° 04‘ 33.96“
– the reservoir was constructed on the Harcov
Stream by the companies W. Streitzig and company from Liberec and H. Rella and Nephew
from Vienna in 1902 - 1904 according to plans
by professor Dr. Otto Intze MSc. The entire hydraulic structure consists of a gravity reservoir
with a masonry dam built in a curve with a radius of curvature of 120 m, a height of 19 m above
its foundations and a length of 157 m at its crest.
This dam holds water in a valley reservoir at a
total volume of 687,000 m³. Nowadays, it is used
for recreation, water sport, fishing and so on.
Q Josefův Důl, GPS: N 50° 47‘ 39.2“ E 15° 11‘
37.94“ – it lies on the Kamenice River and it is
the youngest reservoir of the Jizera Mountains.
It was built in 1976 - 1982 (the initial intention
to build the dam dates from 1906) and it consists of a main dam and a side dam. The main
earth dam is 360 m long at the top and 44 m
high above its foundation, while the side dam
is straight, up to 20 m high above its foundation
and 360 m long at its top. It holds 23 million
m3 of water (more than all of the other Jizera
Mountain reservoirs together). The reservoir
is used to supply Liberec and Jablonec with
drinking water and it is therefore not possible
to swim in it!
