v dubnu bylo nezvykle krásně slunečno a teplo. Doufám,

This year’s nice weather has surprised us so far. April was unusually sunny
and warm. I hope that the coming season will be full of days as nice as pictures and that beautiful weather will make your stay in Karlovy Vary even more pleasant. We will be grateful for all your ideas and comments – they help
us to improve our service for you. We can offer top service in a unique milieu thanks to you, too. We are always creating new products to make your
stay better. There has already been opened the new restaurant La Belle
Époque in the Parkhotel Pupp where you can enjoy your cup of excellent
coffee Illy or choose from the wide offer of our juices.

❚ Ples Harmonie

Noblesní prostředí Slavnostního sálu uvítalo již počtrnácté, také díky podpoře a partnerství Grandhotelu
Pupp, tradiční ples zdravotně postižených, který nese
symbolický název Harmonie. Ples má vždy srdečnou atmosféru, výborně se baví hosté z celého Karlovarska.
Postupem let se bál stal prestižní společenskou událostí.
Grandhotel Pupp se snaží již několik let pomáhat lidem, kteří to nejvíce potřebují. Spolupracujeme také
s domovem pro seniory a dlouhodobě nemocné - Oáza
klidu v Loučkách, od května 2007 jme se zapojili do
projektu www.detskedomovy.cz.
Im Rendez-Vous von Grandhotel Pupp fand eine
Verkaufsausstellung der Bildwerke des Sängers Karel
Gott statt. Der erfolgreichste Musikpreisträger von
„Zlatý slavík“ aller Zeiten stellt sich somit der Öffentlichkeit in einer ungewöhnlichen Rolle als Maler vor.
❚ Ball Harmonie
Die prachtvolle Umgebung des Festsaals empfing bereits zum vierzehnten Mal, auch dank der Unterstützung
und Partnerschaft von Grandhotel Pupp, den traditionellen Ball der Körperbehinderten, der den symbolischen Namen Harmonie trägt. Der Ball hat immer eine
herzliche Atmosphäre, es unterhalten sich glänzend
Gäste aus der gesamten Karlsbader Region. Im Laufe
der Jahre wurde der Ball zu einem Prestigegesellschaftsereignis. Grandhotel Pupp bemüht sich bereits seit einigen Jahren Leuten zu helfen, die es am meisten brauchen. Wir arbeiten auch mit dem Seniorenheim - Oase
der Ruhe in Loučky zusammen, seit Mai 2007 schlossen wir uns dem Projekt www.detskedomovy.cz an.
❚ Ball Harmony
The noble milieu of the Festive Hall has welcomed the
traditional ball of the disabled for the fourteenth time
already, also thanks to support and partnership of the
Pupp Hotel. The all has a symbolic name Harmony. Its
atmosphere is always very warm and visitors from the
whole region of Karlovy Vary entertain themselves perfectly. In the course of time the ball has become a prestige social event. The Grandhotel Pupp has been trying
to help people who need it most for several years
already. We have been cooperating with a home for
seniors and long-term patients – Oasis of Peace in
Loučky, and we have been taking part in the project
www.detskedomovy.cz since May 2007.

Sushi - japonské národní jídlo, jehož příprava je
stejně složitá jak třeba tradiční japonský čajový obřad. Vzniku této lahůdky dopomohla náhoda, kdy
se lidé snažili uchovat ryby déle čerstvé a skladovali je proto s rýží. Došlo k promísení chutí a vůní a pak po staletí k několika stům drobných vylepšení - a můžeme si objednat sushi tak, jak je
známe dnes. Základem zůstává i dnes speciálně
upravená kvalitní rýže v kombinaci s nejrůznějšími kousky čerstvých, syrových ryb nebo plodů
moře či zeleniny. A nesmí samozřejmě chybět klasická sójová omáčka.

Sushi – japanisches Nationalgericht, dessen
Vorbereitung ist genauso kompliziert wie zum
Beispiel das traditionelle japanisches Teeritual.
Der Entstehung von dieser Delikatesse verhalf
ein Zufall, als man sich bemühte die Fische länger frisch zu erhalten und sie deshalb mit Reis lagerte. Es kam zur Vermischung der Geschmäcke
und Düfte und dann nach Jahrhunderten zu einigen hunderten geringen Verbesserungen – und
man kann Sushi so bestellen, wie man es heute
kennt. Grundlage bleibt auch heute speziell vorbereiteter, qualitätsvoller Reis in Kombination
mit verschiedenen frischen, rohen Fischstücken
oder Meeresfrüchten oder Gemüse. Und es darf
natürlich die klassische Sojasauce nicht fehlen.

Do 173. koncertní sezóny vstupuje KSO čtyřmi pořady Dvořákova karlovarského podzimu. Jejich festivalový ráz je dán volbou programu, osobnostmi hostujících
dirigentů a sólistů a v neposlední řadě i reprezentačním prostředím Slavnostního sálu Grandhotelu Pupp. Dvořákovu odkazu je věnována polovina dramaturgické
plochy. Zazní jeho dvě vrcholné symfonie a velkolepá kantáta Stabat mater za účasti špičkového Pražského filharmonického sboru. U dirigentského pultu
přivítáme současného šéfdirigenta KSO Jiřího Stárka, zahajovací koncert řídí bývalý šéfdirigent KSO Angličan Douglas Bostock, závěrečný večer stálý host
Francouz Martin Lebel. Jako sólisté houslových koncertů, jejichž autory jsou jubilanti z roku 2007 Wolfgang Erich Korngold a Jean Sibelius, se představí laureáti
mezinárodních soutěží František Novotný a Roman Patočka.
The Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra opens its historical 173rd concert season with four concerts of the Dvořák Autumn Festival. Their festival character show
the chosen program, guest conductors and soloist as well as the exquisite atmosphere of the Festive hall of the Grandhotel Pupp. A half of the dramaturgy is
dedicated to Antonín Dvořák. We will hear two of his top symphonies and a monumental cantata Stabat mater with the top Czech choir the Prague Philharmonic
Chorus. We will meet the Chief conductor of the Karovy Vary Symphony Orchestra Prof. Jiří Stárek at the conductor desk, the opening concert will conduct the
former Chief conductor of the orchestra Douglas Bostock (England) and the final concert will be leaded by Martin Lebel (France). The violin concertos by
Wolfgang Erich Korngold and Jean Sibelius will be performed by laureates of many international competitions František Novotný a Roman Patočka.

Persönlichkeiten der Gastdirigenten, Solisten und nicht zuletzt durch das Repräsentative Milieu des Festsaales im Grandhotel Pupp gegeben. Dem Dvoraks
Vermächtnis ist die Hälfte des dramaturgischen Inhaltes gewidmet. Es werden seine zwei Gipfelsinfonien und Prunkkantate Stabat Mater unter Mitwirkung des
Prager philharmonischen Spitzenchores erklingen. Am Dirigentenpult bewillkommnen wir den gegenwärtigen Chefdirigent des KSO Jiří Stárek, das
Eröffnungskonzert leitet der frühere Chefdirigent des KSO Douglas Bostock (England), das Abschlusskonzert dann der ständige Gastdirigent Martin Lebel
(Frankreich). Als Solisten der Streichkonzerte, deren Komponisten Wolfgang Erich Korngold und Jean Sibelius die Jubilare des Jahres 2007 sind, stellen sich die
Laureaten der internationalen Wettbewerben František Novotný und Roman Patočka vor.

Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán
Z
aložení porcelánky v Lesově spadá do období vrcholného rozvoje porcelánové výroby počátkem 20. století. Do historie českého porcelánu se zapisuje
zlatým písmem až po druhé světové válce, kdy v budovách zaniklé porcelánky Lenhard vzniká v roce1956 vývojové středisko Karlovarského porcelánu. Pracují
zde špičkoví modeláři realizující nový estetický pohled na tvarování a vzhled. Špičkový design přináší úspěch zejména na světové výstavě EXPO ‘58 v Bruselu, kde vývojový tým obdržel Grand Prix a zlatou medaili.
Po roce 1995, s novým vlastníkem, vzniká nová koncepce výroby pod značkou Thun
Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Jeho produkce svými vysokými nároky na řemeslné
zpracování vyžaduje manufakturní či ateliérový způsob výroby. Práce unikátního designu a vysoké estetické úrovně, zpravidla v limitovaných sériích, nesou rukopis
akademického sochaře Jiřího Laštovičky, člena Mezinárodní akademie keramiky.
Produkce Thun Studia tak sbírá řadu ocenění, je vyhledávaným artiklem sběratelů,
je zastoupena ve sbírkách muzeí.
Ve studiu se pravidelně konají doprovodné akce MFF či Mezinárodní konvicové sympózium. Mimořádnou úroveň a kvalitu práce zdejších mistrů potvrzují takové zakázky, jakými jsou servis pro prezidenta republiky a Pražský hrad, pro španělský královský palác či zastupitelské úřady v zahraničí.

ie Gründung der Porzellanfabrik in Lesov fällt in die Zeit der Höchstentwicklung der Porzellanerzeugung am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der
Historie des tschechischen Porzellans begann sie erst nach dem zweiten
Weltkrieg eine wichtige Rolle zu spielen, nachdem in den Gebäuden der ehemaligen Porzellanfabrik Lenhard ein Designer-Zentrum der Firma Karlovarský porcelán
gegründet worden war. Es arbeiten hier Top-Designers, die ein neues ästhetisches
Herantreten an die Formung und das Aussehen durchsetzten. Das Top-Design
brachte Erfolge vor allem auf der Weltausstellung EXPO ‘58 in Brüssel, wo das Team
den Grand Prix und eine goldene Medaille erhielt.
Nach dem Jahre 1995 mit einem neuen Besitzer, entstand eine neue Konzeption
der Produktion unter der Marke Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Wegen der hohen Ansprüche an die handwerkliche Verarbeitung erfordert diese Produktion eine
Manufaktur oder ein Studio. Die Arbeiten von einzigartigem Design und hohem
ästhetischen Standard zumeist in limitierten Serien, tragen die Handschrift des

akademischen Bildhauers Jiří Laštovička, des Mitglieds der Internationalen
Akademie der Keramik. Die Produktion des Studios Thun sammelt zahlreiche Preise
und ist ein beliebter Artikel von Sammlern. Sie wird auch in den Sammlungen vieler Museen vertreten.
Im Studio finden regelmässig die zum Internationalen Filmfestival gehörenden
Veranstaltungen oder das Internationale Kannesymposium statt. Solche
Bestellungen wie das Service für den Präsidenten der Tschechischen Republik und
die Prager Burg, für die spanische Königsburg oder Vertretungsbehörden im
Ausland bestätigen den aussergewöhnlichen Standard und Qualität der Arbeit hiesiger Meister.
T
he foundation of the porcelain factory in Lesov falls into the period of the
boom in porcelain production in the early 20th century. It was only after World
War II that it started to play an important role in the history of Czech porcelain after a development centre of the company Karlovarský porcelán had been established in the buildings of the former porcelain factory Lenhard in 1956. Top modellers who worked here put a new aesthetic view of shaping and appearance into
practice.
Top design brought success especially at the world exhibition EXPO ‘58 in Brussels
where the team won the Grand Prix and a gold medal.
After 1995, with a new owner, a new conception of production with the brand name
Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán came into being. Owing to its high demands for
craftsmanship, its products have to be made either in a manufacture or in a studio.
The work of unique design and high aesthetic quality, usually in limited series,
bears the handwriting of the academic sculptor Jiří Laštovička, a member of
the International Academy of Ceramics. That is why the products of the Thun studio
get a number of awards, is popular with collectors and represented in the collections of museums.
Supporting events of the International Film Festival or the International
Jug Symposium are regularly held in the studio. Such orders like the service for
the President of the Republic, for the Prague Castle, the Spanish royal palace or
diplomatic corps abroad confirm the exceptional quality and standard of local
masters’ work.

V ohybu řeky Teplé bývaly romantické louky místa, která návštěvníky lázní magicky přitahovala již v 17. století. Pořádali zde slavnosti v přírodě.
R. 1695 zde dokonce nechal saský kurfiřt a polský král August Silný II. postavit z větví přístřešky,
v nichž se odehrával banket. Inspiroval tak majitele pozemku, starostu Deimla, aby na své loučce
pod skalami vystavěl r. 1701 první karlovarský
lusthaus, módně nazvaný Salle de l’Assemblée.
Spoluinvestorem se stal právě zábavymilovný saský kurfiřt. Podle něj a také podle toho, že si na sezónu přivážel číšníky ze Saska, se brzy vžil název
Saský sál. Stal se základem a dnes již skrytým srdcem slavného Grandhotelu Pupp.

Mitinvestor war der die Unterhaltung liebende
sächsischer Kurfürst. Nach ihm und auch danach,
dass er mit sich in der Saison Kellner aus Sachsen
brachte, bürgerte sich bald der Name Sächsische
Saal ein. Er wurde zum Kern und dem heute noch
versteckten Herzen des berühmten Grandhotels
Pupp.

Od Puppů k Puppům
Andreas Becher, další karlovarský starosta, na přilehlém pozemku k Saskému sálu postavil r. 1728
další lusthaus. Obsluhovali zde číšníci z Prahy,
proto se mu říkalo Český sál. Becher postupně objekt odprodal v letech 1775-1785 Johannu
Georgu Puppovi. Ten Český sál přestavěl a před
budovou nechal vysadit dvanáct řad lip. Český sál
zdědil Puppův starší syn Josef, který ovšem záhy
zemřel. Mladší syn Johann marně o majetek usi-
loval, podle závěti však přešel na Josefovu manželku Barboru Urbanovou. Ale vdova r. 1827 objekt prodala třem různým vlastníkům. Zpátky pro
svůj rod jej získal až v r. 1870 Heinrich Pupp, syn
Johanna a vnuk zakladatele puppovské dynastie.

Cukrář Johann Georg Pupp (původním příjmením
Pop) z Veltrus přijel poprvé do Karlových Varů
r. 1759 ve službách hraběte Chotka. R. 1760
se zde usadil natrvalo a pracoval jako cukrář
v Mitterbachově kavárně. V r. 1775 se oženil
s majitelovou dcerou Franciskou. Autentickým
svědkem prvopočátků pobytu prvního Puppa
v Karlových Varech je dům U Melounu, tehdy
zvaný Svatý Tadeáš, kde bývala ona vyhlášená kavárna a cukrárna.

winnen. Dem Testament nach gehörte er Josefs
Ehefrau Barbora Urban. Aber im Jahre 1827 verkaufte die Witwe den Komplex drei verschiedenen Leuten. Zurück für seine Familie gewann ihn
erst im Jahre 1870 Heinrich Pupp, Johanns Sohn
und der Enkel des Gründers der Dynastie Pupp.

From the Pupps to the Pupps
Andreas Becher, another mayor of Karlovy Vary,
had another lusthaus built on a piece of land adjacent to the Saxon Hall in 1728. Visitors were
served by waiters from Prague here and that was
why it was called the Bohemian Hall. Becher
sold it gradually to Johann Georg Pupp between
1775 and 1785. He had the Bohemian Hall rebuilt and had twelve rows of linden trees planted
in front of the building. The Bohemian Hall was
inherited by Pupp’s elder son Josef who soon
died. The younger son Johann struggled for the
property in vain - it passed over to Josef’s wife
Barbora Urban according to the last will. The widow, however, sold the building to three different people in 1827. It was Heinrich Pupp,
Johann’s son and the grandson of the founder of
the Pupp dynasty that won it back for his family
in 1870.

Dienste des Grafen Chotek. Im Jahre 1760 ließ er
sich hier auf die Dauer nieder und arbeitete als
Zuckerbäcker im Mitterbachs Café. Im Jahre 1775
heiratete er die Tochter des Besitzers Franzisca. Der
authentische Zeuge der Anfänge des Aufenthalts des
ersten Pupps in Karlsbad ist das Haus Zur Melone,
damals Hl. Tadeas genannt, wo sich das bekannte
Café und die Konditorei befanden.

The Melon House
The confectioner Johann Georg Pupp (his original
surname was Pop) from Veltrusy arrived in Karlovy
Vary for the first time in 1759 when he was in Count
Chotek’s service. In 1760 he settled here for good
and worked as a confectioner in Mitterbach’s café.
In 1775 he married the owner’s daughter Franzisca.
The Melon House, which was called St. Tadeas in
that time, was an authentic witness of the beginning
of the stay of the first member of the Pupp dynasty
in Karlovy Vary. There were a renowned café and
a confectionery in the house.

oko. Právě Boží oko bylo po

staletí trnem v oku celých generací Puppů. Stál na atraktivním místě a bránil jejich dalším plánům. „Překážející“ Boží oko se podařilo zakoupit v dražbě až v r. 1936, vlastně
v předvečer druhé světové války. Naštěstí jej ještě
stihli architektonicky začlenit do hotelového komplexu.

Gottes Auge – der Dorn im Auge
Die Nachkommen des Bürgermeisters Deimel bauten um das Jahr 1730 auf ihrem Grundstück vor
dem Sächsischen Saal noch ein Haus und nannten
es Gottes Auge. Und gerade das Gottes Auge war
der Dorn im Auge für einige Generationen der
Pupps. Es stand an einer attraktiven Stelle und
komplizierte ihre weiteren Pläne. Erst im Jahre
1936, eigentlich am Vorabend des zweiten
Weltkriegs gelang es ihren „das“ im Wege stehende
Gottes Auge, bei einer Versteigerung zu kaufen.
Zum Glück gelang es ihnen noch, es in den
Hotelkomplex einzugliedern.

The God’s Eye - a Thorn in the Side
Mayor Deiml’s descendants in about 1730 had another house built on their piece of land in front of
the Saxon Hall. They called it the God’s Eye. And
it was the God’s Eye that was the thorn in the side
of several generations of the Pupps. Its location
was very attractive and it complicated their further
plans. But it was only in 1936, on the eve of World
War II, that they managed to win the “problematic”
God’s Eye at auction. Fortunately, they had enough
time to make it a part of the hotel complex.

Another Stage of Development
In 1862 a congress of natural scientists and doctors
was held in Karlovy Vary. Heinrich Pupp offered
the town to build a wooden pavilion for the congress on his piece of land behind the Bohemian
Hall. Heinrich Pupp bought the pavilion - what
would it have been good for after the congress? He
converted it to a concert and café hall, the famous
Cafésalon. In 1873 a new Cafésalon Pupp with verandas was built in its place. The building ceased to
exist in 1905 because it was right here that the construction of the Festive Hall started.

V r. 1862 se v Karlových Varech konal přírodovědecký a lékařský kongres. Heinrich Pupp nabídl
městu, aby na jeho pozemku za Českým sálem postavilo pro kongres dřevěný pavilon. Brzy nato jej
získal pro sebe, protože co s ním po kongresu?
Upravil jej na koncertní a kavárenský sál, slavný
Cafésalon. R. 1873 byl na jeho místě postaven nový Cafésalon Pupp s verandami. Objekt dosloužil
v r. 1905, neboť právě zde byla zahájena výstavba
Slavnostního sálu.

Im Jahre 1862 fand in Karlsbad ein naturwissenschaftlicher und medizinischer Kongreß statt.
Heinrich Pupp bat der Stadt an, dass sie auf seinem
Grundstück hinter dem Böhmischen Saal einen
hölzernen Pavillon für den Kongreß erbauen
konnte. Heinrich Pupp hat kurz danach den
Pavillon gewonnen, denn - was mit ihm nach dem
Kongreß? Er baute ihn zu einem Konzert- und
Cafésaal – den berühmten Cafésalon - um. Im Jahre
1873 wurde an seiner Stelle ein neuer Cafésalon
Pupp mit Veranden gebaut. Das Gebäude diente im
Jahre 1905 aus, denn gerade hier wurde der Bau
des Festsaals eröffnet.

Vezměte si s sebou
Dnešní podoba Grandhotelu Pupp je z velké části výsledkem smělé přestavby na přelomu 20. století. Postavíme-li se zády k řece na náměstíčko
před hotelem, máme po pravé ruce Zlatou harfu:
dodnes tam na harfu hraje andělíček v rohovém
výklenku pod střechou. Fronta Grandhotelu přímo proti nám, ta se zdobnými balkony, stojí
v místech dřívějšího Saského sálu. Ten byl o dvě
patra nižší a také kratší.
V levém rohu náměstíčka, kde je dnes kavárna
Pupp, stával dům Boží oko. Jdeme-li podél Teplé
až k parkovišti a postavíme-li se zády k řece, vidíme vpravo mohutnou secesní hotelovou budovu.
V jejím přízemí je Grandrestaurant, Zrcadlový sál,
kavárna a bar Rendez-vous s kulečníkovou hernou. Koncem 19. století stál právě na tomto místě Český sál.
Přímo před námi je pseudobarokní budova Slavnostního sálu. Předtím zde stál patrový Cafésalon.
Všimneme si bohatého štukování a soch na fasádě. Můžeme také najít portréty čtvrté generace
Puppů - Antona, Juliuse a Heinricha. Vlevo od budovy Slavnostního sálu vidíme jihovýchodní křídlo hotelového komplexu - Parkhotel Pupp.
A teď již jistě toužíme po nějakém občerstvení - třeba v Café Pupp, nebo v baru Rendez-vous. Ani
v Malé dvoraně se špatně nesedí, co říkáte?

In der linken Ecke des kleinen Platzes, wo sich
heute das Café Pupp befindet, stand einst das
Haus Gottes Auge. Wenn Sie den Tepl Fluss entlang bis zum Parkplatz gehen und sich mit dem
Rücken zu dem Fluss stellen, sehen Sie rechts die
große Jugendstilhotelfront. In dem Erdgeschoss
befinden sich das Grandrestaurant, der Spiegelsaal, das Café, die Bar Rendez-vous mit dem
Billardzimmer. Vor der Renovierung des Hotels
am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts stand gerade hier
der Böhmische Saal.
Direkt vor Ihnen ist das Pseudobarockgebäude
des Festsaals. Vorher stand hier der einstöckige
Cafésalon. Widmen Sie Ihre Aufmerksamkeit dem
reichen Stuckwerk und den Statuen auf der
Fassade. Sie können hier auch Porträte der vierten Generation der Pupps finden - Anton, Julius
und Heinrich. Links von dem Gebäude des
Festsaals sehen Sie den südöstlichen Flügel des
Hotelkomplexes - das Parkhotel Pupp.

The God’s Eye House used to stand in the left corner of the small square where today the Café
Pupp can be seen. If you go along the Teplá River
as far as the car park and turn your back to the river, you can see the big Art Nouveau hotel facade
on the right. There are the Grandrestaurant,
Mirror Hall and the Rendez-vous bar with a billiards room on its ground floor. The Bohemian
Hall stood right here before the renovation at the
end of the 19th century.
The pseudo Baroque building of the Festive Hall
is right in front of you. In earlier times the two-storey Cafésalon stood here. Pay attention to rich stuccowork and the statues on the facade. You can
also find portraits of the fourth generation of the
Pupps - Anton, Julius and Heinrich. The southwestern wing of the hotel complex - the Parkhotel
Pupp - can be seen to the left of the building of
the Festive Hall.
Now you must be longing for some refreshment maybe in the Café Pupp or in the bar Rendezvous. And the Small Hall (Malá dvorana) is very

Take with You
The present appearance of the Grandhotel Pupp
is from a greater part the result of its bold renovation at the end of the 19th century. If you stand
on a small square in front of the hotel and turn
your back to the river, the Golden Harp House is
on your right: a small angel in the corner niche
under the roof has been playing the harp up to
these days. The facade of the Grandhotel, the one
with ornamental balconies, stands where the former Saxon Hall used to stand in the past. It was
two floors lower and shorter, too.

Výrokem: „Jsou tři města, kde
bych chtěl žít: Řím, Výmar
a Karlovy Vary,“ Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe (17491832) zcela jasně odhalil svůj
vztah k lázeňskému městu. Již po své první návštěvě se vyznal: „Tomuto městu vděčím za zcela
nový život.“ Strávil zde při třinácti návštěvách mezi lety 1785 až 1823 celkem 3 roky a mnohá jeho
literární díla spatřila světlo světa právě zde. Na
dlouhodobější pobyty, kdy si léčil ledviny a žaludek, si v lázních pronajímal byt. Byl častým hostem Saského sálu (dnes Grandhotel Pupp), kde se
setkával s přáteli u šálku kávy, či s významnými
hosty u slavnostní tabule. Četná dámská společnost byla pro něj jedním z prvků lázeňské léčby,
jak je možno číst v jeho deníčku: „Odpoledne se
zatáhla obloha při velmi horké atmosféře. V noci
to všechno zase pominulo. Hrabě Geniceo byl na
Amáliiných pochoutkách, na tanečním čaji
v Saském sále, kde předtím seděl a popíjel čaj
a užíval mnohých sladkostí. Přišlo mně při této
příležitosti za příjemné, že jsem znal zde se zdržující významné osoby. Kníže HohenzolernHechingen ke mně hovořil, rovněž princezna
Julie. Více Poláků a Polek mi bylo představeno.
Rovněž také Madame Gajewska, básnířka. K závěrečné polonéze mne vyzvala jedna polská dáma
k tanci, se kterou jsem se točil kolem a do rukou
mně přicházely nové a nové většinou překrásné
děti při dámské volence.“
Jako dvorní rada se procházel ve stínu Puppových
alejí s pruským králem Bedřichem Vilémem, knížetem Metternichem, se slavnými hudebníky, básníky a politiky. Při poslední návštěvě zde Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe zažil ve svých 74 letech poslední citové vzplanutí. Hluboce se zamiloval do
devatenáctileté Ulriky von Levetzow. Na otázku,
zda by s ním „šla společnou cestou životem“, se
mu však dostalo zdvořilého odmítnutí. Krátce nato odcestoval do Výmaru a do Čech se již nikdy
nevrátil.

Mit der Äußerung: „Es gibt drei Städte, wo ich leben möchte: Rom, Weimar und Karlsbad,“ offenbarte Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
ganz klar seine Beziehung zur Kurstadt. Schon
nach seinem ersten Besuch gestand er: „Dieser
Stadt verdanke ich ein ganz neues Leben.“ Er
verbrachte hier bei dreizehn Besuchen zwischen
den Jahren 1785 bis 1823 insgesamt 3 Jahre und
viele seiner Literarwerke erblickten das Licht der

Welt gerade hier. Für längere Aufenthalte, als er
sich hier die Nieren und den Magen heilte, mietete er in der Kur eine Wohnung. Er war ein häufiger Gast des Sächsischen Saals (heute Grandhotel
Pupp), wo er sich mit Freunden bei einer Tasse
Kaffee, oder mit bedeutenden Gästen bei einer
Festtafel traf. Zahlreiche Damengesellschaft war
für ihn ein Teil der Heilkur, wie man in seinem
Tagebuch lesen kann: „Am Nachmittag bedeckte
sich der Himmel bei sehr heißer Atmosphäre. In
der Nacht ging es alles wieder vorüber. Graf
Geniceo war auf den Leckerbissen von Amalia,
zum Tanztee im Sächsischen Saal, wo er vorher saß
und Tee trank und vieler Süßigkeiten genoss. Mir
war es bei dieser Gelegenheit angenehm, dass ich
die hier sich aufhaltenden bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten kennen lernte. Fürst Hohenzollern Hechingen sprach zu mir, ebenfalls Prinzessin
Julia. Mehr Polen und Polinnen wurden mir vorgestellt. Ebenso auch Madame Gajewska, eine
Dichterin. Zur Abschlusspolonäse forderte mich
eine polnische Dame zum Tanz auf, mit der ich
mich herum drehte und in die Hände kamen mir
neue und neue meist wunderschöne Kinder bei
Damenwahl.“
Als Hofrat spazierte er im Schatten der Pupp
Alleen mit dem Preußischen König Friedrich
Wilhelm, mit Fürst Metternich, mit berühmten
Komponisten, Dichtern und Politikern. Während
seines letzten Besuchs erlebte hier Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe im Alter von 74 Jahren die
letzte Gefühlsregung. Er verliebte sich tief in die
neunzehnjährige Ulrika von Levetzow. Auf die
Frage, ob sie mit ihm „den gemeinsamen Weg des
Lebens ginge“, bekam er aber eine höfliche
Ablehnung. Kurz danach reiste er nach Weimar ab
und kehrte nach Böhmen nie wieder zurück.

and a Scientist
Goethe’s words: “There are three towns where
I would like to live – Rome, Weimar and Karlovy
Vary,” reveal quite clearly Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s (1749–1832) relationship to the spa town. It
was after his very first visit that he said: “I owe this
town my completely new life.” He spent here
altogether 3 years on thirteen visits between 1785
and 1823 and many of his literary works were
born just here. He rented a flat here for his longterm stays during which he was treated for kidneys and stomach. He was a frequent visitor to the
Saxon Hall (today’s Grandhotel Pupp) where he
met his friends over a cup of coffee or prominent
guests at a gala table. A company consisting of numerous ladies was part of spa treatment for him as
we can read in his diary: “In the afternoon the sky
became overcast and it was very hot. It passed
away in the night. Count Geniceo enjoyed
Amalia’s delicacies at a tea party in the Saxon Hall
where he had been sitting and relishing many sweets before. I found it very pleasant to know prominent people staying here. Prince HohenzolernHechingen talked to me and so did Princess Julia.
Many Polish men and women were introduced to
me. Madame Gajewska, a poetess, too. A Polish
lady invited me to dance the final polonaise with
her and I turned round and round with her and
during the ladies’ choice always new and new
children kept coming into my arms, most of them
very beautiful.” (Free translation).
Being a politician, too, he walked the shade of the
Pupp Alley with the
Prussian king Friedrich
Wilhelm, Count Metternich, famous musicians,
poets and politicians.
During his last visit here
74-year-old Goethe fell
deeply in love with
Ulrike von Lewetzov who
was only nineteen. However, when he asked her
if she would share “the
journey through life”
with him, he was refused
politely. Shortly thereafter he left for Weimar
and never came back to
Bohemia.

Město Bečov založili počátkem 13. století velmoži
českých knížat, ve století 14. nacházíme již první
zmínku o bečovském hradu. Ten, položen nejvýše
na skále, je nejcennější historickou a uměleckou památkou Bečova, malebného historického městečka
vzdáleného jen 20 km od Karlových Varů. Unikátní
součástí bečovského panského sídla je také pozdně
barokní zámek z 18. století. Největší vzácností zámecké expozice je relikviář sv. Maura, památka evropského významu. Byl zhotoven v 1. čtvrtině 13. století pro benediktinské opatství ve Florennes pro
ostatky sv. Jana Křtitele, sv. Maura a sv. Timoteje.
Dřevěné jádro je pokryto bohatou zlatnickou výzdobou. Ze zlaceného stříbrného plechu jsou vytepány sošky 12 apoštolů, Ježíše Krista a sv. Maura.
V roce 1838 ho od církve koupil Alfred de Beaufort,
nechal jej opravit a po výstavě v roce 1888 převézt
na Bečov. Příslušníci rodu de Beaufort byli členy
NSDAP a příslušníky SS, a proto na konci 2. světové války museli opustit Československou republiku.
Relikviář předtím zakopali pod podlahu hradní kaple. Dne 5. listopadu 1985 ho zde po ročním pátrání nalezli čeští kriminalisté ve značně poškozeném
stavu. Po náročném a dlouhodobém restaurování je
relikviář prezentován v trezorové místnosti s řízeným klimatem a nepřekonatelným bezpečnostním
systémem. Bečov však není jen hrad a zámek. Je to
také řada památek v těsné blízkosti - náměstí plné
památných domů, Mariánský sloup nebo barokní
radnice. A kamkoliv se z Bečova vydáte, obklopí
vás nádherná příroda. Krásné rozhledy si můžete vychutnat třeba cestou na Šibeniční vrch, kde vás čeká popraviště. Mimo provoz.

Die Stadt Bečov wurde zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts von den Magnaten der böhmischen
Fürsten gegründet, im 14. Jahrhundert finden wir
bereits erste Erwähnungen über die Burg. Diese,
am Felsen am höchsten gelegen, ist das wertvollste historische Kunstdenkmal in Bečov, einem malerischen historischen Städtchen nur 20 km von
Karlsbad gelegen. Einmaliger Bestandteil des
Herrensitzes in Bečov ist auch das Spätbarockschloss aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Die größte
Sehenswürdigkeit der Schlossexposition ist der St.
Maurus Reliquienschrein, ein Denkmal europäischer Bedeutung. Er wurde im ersten Viertel des
13. Jahrhunderts für die Benediktiner Abtei in
Florennes für die Reliquien des Hl. Johannes des
Taufers, Hl. Maurus und Hl. Timotheus ausgefertigt. Der Holzkern ist mit reichen Verzierungen
aus Gold geschmückt. Aus vergoldetem Silberblech sind Statuen der 12 Apostel, Jesus Christus
und Hl. Maurus bosseliert. Im Jahre 1838 kaufte
ihn von der Kirche Alfred de Beaufort, er ließ ihn
renovieren und nach der Ausstellung im Jahre
1888 nach Bečov bringen. Die Angehörigen der
Familie de Beaufort waren NSDAP und SS
Mitglieder, und deswegen mussten Sie nach dem
Ende des 2. Weltkriegs die Tschechoslowakei verlassen. Den Reliquienschrein vergruben sie vorher unter den Fußboden der Burgkapelle. Am
5. November 1985 fanden ihn hier nach einjähriger Forschung tschechische Kriminalisten in ziemlich schlechtem Zustand. Nach anstrengender und
langjähriger Wiederherstellung wird der Reliquienschrein in einem Tresorraum mit andauernd
gleichem Klima und unüberwindbarem Sicherheitssystem ausgestellt. Bečov ist aber nicht nur
die Burg und das Schloss. Es gibt hier auch eine
Reihe von Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Nähe – den
Marktplatz voll von sehenswürdigen Häusern, die
Mariensäule oder das Barockrathaus. Und wohin
auch immer Sie aus Bečov gehen, umgibt Sie
wunderschöne Natur. Schöne Aussichten können
Sie zum Beispiel am Weg zum Šibeniční vrch
(Galgenberg) auskosten, wo Sie ein Hinrichtungsplatz erwartet. Außer Betrieb.

The town of Bečov was founded by feudal lords
of Czech princes in the early 13th century. The
castle of Bečov was first recorded in the 14th century. It stands high on a piece of rock and is the
most valuable historic and art sight of Bečov,
a picturesque little town which lies only 20 km
away from Karlovy Vary. A unique part of the
castle is the late Baroque chateau dating from the
18th century. The biggest treasure of the chateau
is the St. Maurus reliquary, a monument of

European importance. It was made in the first
quarter of the 13th century for the Benedictine
abbey in Florennes to keep the relics of John the
Baptist, St. Maurus and St. Timotey. Its wooden
nucleus is covered in lavish goldsmith’s decoration. Statuettes of twelve apostles, Jesus Christ and
St. Maurus are beaten out of a gilded sheet of silver. In the year 1838 Alfred de Beaufort bought it
from the church, had it repaired and after the exhibition in 1888 he had it transported to Bečov.
The members of the noble family of de Beaufort
were members of the NSDAP party and the SS
and that was why they had to leave the
Czechoslovakia at the end of World War II. They
had buried the reliquary under the floor of the
castle chapel before they left. Czech criminologists found it there after a year-long searching on
the 5th November 1985. It was in a very bad state. After complicated and long-lasting renovation
the reliquary was exhibited in an air-conditioned
room-safee with a safety system.
However, Bečov is not only the castle and the
chateau. It is also a number of sights – a square
full of ancient houses, the Marian Column or the
Baroque town hall. And wherever you may go
from Bečov, you will be surrounded by beautiful
nature. You can enjoy wonderful views e.g. on
your way to the Gallows Hill with a place of execution waiting for you. Out of order, of course.

Eine alte Legende sagt, dass bei dieser Quelle sich
der Gründer Karlsbads selbst, nämlich der Kaiser
und König Karl IV., seine Beine zu heilen versuchte.
Über der Trinkvase befindet sich ein Relief von
Zörkler mit dem Namen „Entdeckung Karlsbads“. Wo sich heute die Quelle von Karl IV. befindet, gab es immer kleinere Thermalquellen,
und zwar in der Laube des alten Rathauses. Erst
der Aufbau der heutigen Holzkolonnade gab der
Quellvase einen festen Platz unter den Quellen,
die man in der Trinkkur benutzt. Als im Jahre
1895 die Treppen bei der Pestsäule umgelegt
wurden, entdeckte man neue Thermalquellen.
Sie quollen unter der Schicht des Sprudelsteins
hervor, die etwa 1 Meter dick war. Aus zwei
Reservoirs leitete man das Thermalwasser in die
Kolonnade zu. Doch die Ergiebigkeit der Quelle
begann zu sinken und seit dem 1. Weltkrieg
musste man eine Ersatzlösung benutzen. Eine 85
m lange Rohrleitung leitete Wasser aus der nächsten ausgiebigen Quelle - der Unteren Schlossquelle - in die Kolonnade zu. Solange die Badesaison in Karlsbad nur fünf Sommermonate dauerte, war diese Lösung genügend. Auf seinem
Wege in die Kolonnade wurde das heisse Wasser
der Schlossquelle kühler und seine Temperatur
war dann für die Trinkkur ganz angenehm. Doch
die Situation wurde kompliziert, nachdem die
ganzjährliche Badesaison eingeführt wurde - im
Winter sank die Temperatur in der Quellvase bis
auf 30°C. Im Rahmen der neuen geologischen
Forschung wurden auch in der Nähe der
Pestsäule drei Bohrungen gemacht. Thermalwasser für die Quelle von Karl IV. wurde dann
in der Tiefe von 19,5 m aufgefangen.
Temperature 63,8°C, CO2 content 237 mg/l,
yield 4,8 l/min. An old legend says that it was
right at this spring where the founder of the spa
town himself, the emperor and king Charles IV, tried to cure his sore limbs. There is a relief by
Zörkler above the springs vase. Its name is “The
Discovery of Karlovy Vary”.
Small thermal springs have existed in the place of
the present big spring since long ago. They could
be found in the arcade of the old town hall. When
the present wooden colonnade was built, the spring
vase got its fixed position and thermal water from it
started to be used in the drinking cure. When in
1895 the stairs of the Plague Column were re-laid,
new springs were discovered. They sprang from under a layer of sprudel stone which was 1 metre
thick. The water was collected in two reservoirs
and special pipes led it to the colonnade. But the
richness of the new springs gradually sank and from
the World War I another solution to the problem
had to be used. Water was brought from the nearest
rich spring - the Lower Castle Spring by means of
pipes which were 85 metres long.
This was quite a satisfactory solution when the
spa season lasted for five months only. Thermal
water from the hot Castle Spring cooled down on
its way to the colonnade and its temperature was
quite pleasant and suitable for the drinking cure.
The situation became complicated after the spa
season had been extended to the whole year - in
winter the temperature of the water in the spring
vase sank to some 30°C.
Before Karlovy Vary springs were cought newly,
a geological research had been made. Three wells
which were made in the neighbourhood of the
Plague Column were parts of it. Thermal water
for Charles IV Spring was cought at a depths of
19,5 metres.

DIE QUELLE DES KARL IV.

Stará báje tvrdí, že právě u tohoto pramene si léčil své postižené údy sám zakladatel lázní, císař
a král Karel IV. Nad pramenní vázou je umístěn
památný reliéf od Zörklera „Objevení Karlových
Varů“. Odedávna byly v místech dnešního pramene vývěry termální vody, a to v podloubí staré
městské radnice. Až stavba dnešní dřevěné kolonády dala pramenní váze tohoto zdroje pevné místo a začlenila jej mezi prameny, používané pro léčebnou pitnou kúru. Při přeložce schodiště u morového sloupu byly v roce 1895 odkryty nové
prameny, prýštící zpod vřídlovcové lavice asi
1 metr mocné. Byly zachyceny dvěma jímkami
a vyvedeny potrubím do kolonády. Jejich vydatnost však postupně klesala a již od I. světové války se muselo použít náhradní řešení: byla sem přivedena voda z nejbližšího vydatného zdroje Dolního Zámeckého pramene, a to potrubím
85 m dlouhým. Pokud trvala karlovarská lázeňská
sezóna jen pět letních měsíců, bylo to řešení docela vyhovující. Voda horkého Zámeckého pramene se cestou ochladila a měla pro pitnou kúru
docela příjemnou teplotu. Horší to bylo po zavedení celoroční léčby - v zimě klesala teplota vody
v pramenní váze až na 30°C.
Při geologickém průzkumu pro nové jímání karlovarských pramenů byly hloubeny tři vrty i z místa
poblíž morového sloupu. Termální voda pro pramen Karla IV. byla potom zachycena vrtem
o hloubce 19,5 metru.
