The 7 modern sins
First of all, I must say that writing about the modern capital sins is a hard nut
to crack. Things which used to be taken as a sin are today pretty normal.
Would anyone think that eating expensively could be a sin? Or perhaps
feeling melancholic? No. Our time is very tolerant. But this is meant also in a
negative way. Being selfish and grasping is modern in our times. There is a
number of features that are common in the 21 st century, but shouldn’t be.
Features which nearly everybody of us does have more or less. And here
are the seven worst sins. The 7 capital sins of the modern age viewed by my
perspective.
Nr. 1
Indifference
This is a feature which is for me really difficult to
understand. People know that there are wrong things
going on, but they are simply not interested! They just
do not care, because it is too difficult to think about
somebody else than just about themselves. Here is an
example: Tell me, how many people don’t know that a
lot of cosmetic preparations are tested on animals in
an inhuman way. And now tell me, how many people
have stopped buying those products. If I don’t count
the handful “ecological freaks”, then nearly no one.
And this is indifference. You know, but it doesn’t
matter. Your behavior would be the same as if you did
not know.

Nr.2 Hypocrisy
A very common feature nowadays.
You pretend being different, better
than you actually are. And you don’t
pretend this only in front of other
people, but you pretend it even in
front of yourself. Another explanation
of hypocrisy is that you can see, but
you don’t want to see. If you show to
people a short film shot in a large
breeding place for hens, where the
animals are kept in tiny cages and fed
by antibiotics and hormones, so that
in the age of 3 months the chicken
looks like an one-year-old hen, people
say how horrible it is. They say that
people who own this breeding aren’t
human creatures. And some people

even don’t want to see it. They say
they are too sensitive for such horrible
things. But if you go with those people
after a few days for a lunch, they
order chicken without an eyewink. It is
disgusting, but it is true. People just
don’t want to receive responsibility for
their acts. The person who kills the
animal (cuts down trees, kills people
in a war for recourses…) is the bad
one. But a customer isn’t responsible
for things and services, which he gets.
He is “just” a customer. But tell me,
would those things happen if there
were no customers? There is no offer
without a demand! Nr. 3
Dehumanization

In the past, people used to
live in small societies in the
countryside. Everyone knew
each other perfectly. So you
would always think twice,
before you did something
bad. Of course, this could
have been sometimes pretty
annoying, but the situation
now is much worse. If you
live in a city, you usually
don’t even know your
neighbors. You can do
anything you want and not a

person will care. An example
for this are girls being kept in
a cellar for decades. It is
much easier to act perverse
than it was before. People
don’t feel responsible for
their acts, they feel
themselves to be a part of
the society, where they can
do whatever they want. They
are just an anonymous part
of a society. And they act so.
Nr.4 Superficiality

This sin is very
popular especially by
young people. The
only things which are
important are the
things that you can
see. You don’t have to
care about a
personality of a
person, if he/she is

good-looking, rich and
has got a great
career. Because
those people are in
our times the most
respected ones. Who
cares that a scientist
spends his whole life
exploring
medicaments, or that

some people went to
Africa to help starving
children. Well, you
say that people who
make those great
things are remarkable,
but that’s it. Or would
you marry someone
who works with
people with leprosy?

Or someone who
spent all his life
behind a test tube.
And who earns
perhaps 8 000 crowns
a month? No. Money
and look are things
that count. All the
honor to the
exceptions. Nr.5

Addiction
As soon as I am
concerned, nearly
everybody is
addicted on
something in these
days. It doesn’t
have to be just
alcohol or drugs,

but also much
more common
things like work,
another person or
even your own
body. Addiction
can be very
dangerous. Not
only that it causes

many health
problems, but if
you don’t pay
enough attention
to it, it can swallow
you up completely.
One day you wake
up and find out
that your addiction

is the only
importance of your
life. Nr.6
Egoism
As I have
already
mentioned at
the beginning,

selfishness
became
modern. The
philosophy of
our century is to
think just about
things which
can be useful

for us. Money
and personal
achievement
became the
most important
thing in our
lives. Old,
unproductive

people are often
sent away and
not more
respected as
full-fledged
human beings.
We start slowly
to loose the

ability to invest
energy and
money to the
people who
aren’t as lucky
as we are. We
prefer money to
relations and to

the lives of other
people. “I am
important and
the world is here
just for me.”
That is the
trend. Nr.7

Short-sighted
ness
This is,
without
overstatement
, a fatal sin of
today’s
19 / 34
society. We
don’t think of
our future at
all. We care
just about that
NOW we are
rich and

happy. But we
don’t see the
tomorrow. We
don’t care that
our children
and the next
generations

won’t probably
even live
because of
our failures
and our
extreme
demand. “I

want it and I
want it now. I
don’t care
about the fact
that I will have
to pay it up for
the next 20
23 / 34
years. Or that
my child will
have to pay. I
don’t care.”
But this
problem is not
only about the

debts. We
don’t even
care about the
fact that we
are slowly
(well maybe
not so slowly
25 / 34
any more)
destroying our
planet. But
where should
we live when
the
environment is

contamined
and there is
no air to
breath? We
don’t care.
“Today is
important and

after me
comes the
flood.” In
modern
times,
everything

works
perfectly.
Development
is faster and
faster. We
have never

had such
living
standards
before. But
how long will
it be like that.

Will we ever
discover that
we are
making an
incredible,
fatal failure?

And won’t it
be too late by
than? Who
knows.. But
already my
generation

will feel the
consequence
