Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31st, the last day of October. The word Halloween comes from “Hallow Eve“, which means that it is the evening before “All Saints Day“. According to Christian tradition, the spirits of the dead come back to where they lived, and witches and demons become active. People put a lantern outside their house to be friendly to the spirits. Halloween lanterns are made from pumpkins and they are called Jack-o-lanterns. People put a candle inside the lantern to light up the face. Children and adults dress up in scary costumes (ghosts, witches, vampires, skeletons etc.). Children go from house to house saying "Trick or Treat" which means : "Give us sweets or we'll play a trick on you." Orange and black are popular Halloween colours. Orange is the colour of pumpkins and black is the colour of darkness. Halloween was traditionally celebrated in Ireland and Scotland, and was introduced by Irish immigrants to other countries, essentially the UK and the USA.
