Z HISTORIE KONTRABASU Kontrabas vznikl v 16. století v ltàlii z basovych viol da gamba. Nejvyznamnéjéími kontrabasisty minulosti byli Domenico Dragonetti (1763- 1846), Giovanni Bottesini (1821- 1BB9) a Sergej Kusevickij (1874- 1951). UvàZlivou koncepÒní prací poloZil hned její první profesor Vàclav Hause (1764-1847) zàklady óeské kontrabasové ékoly, její2 vyznam brzy pierostl regionàlni rémec a zàsadním zpúsobem ovlivnil vyvoj kontrabasové hry v iadé evropskych stàtú, zatímco jinde se uplatnil vliv italské a francouzské skoly, odlièné piedevéím v dr2ení smyòce. II\TRODUCTION The Elernents of Double-Bass Playing folio'.ls the methods o{ Czech instructive literature, further develops them, supplying new informatiorr from modern pedagogy. The material is on principle arrangeC so as to form a complete iogic system, to satisfy îhe need of progressiveness and adequate demandingness and to develop manual skill as well as musicality in the pupil. Active thinking is accentuated. The elements of general musical education are required. Through a representative selection of ètudes by Czech doubie-bass peclagogues - V. Hause, Fr. Simandl and Fr. Cerny - the pupils get 1c know valuable instructive literattrre of older date. Other teaching materìals may be employed individually (e"9. Elemenlary Etudes by Jan Kment, 30 orchestral etudes by Fr. Simandl). After each position there are unnumbered additionai interval exercises which can be used by the teacher according to the oupil's needs to extend the subject matter of the individual postttons. in some cases the authors have applied new methods on account of their own experience and pedagogìcal praclice. For example, playing in the preparatory positions is practised on the inner strings at first, because drawing the bow there is easier for beginners than on the strings G and E. Playing in the basic position begins with the 4th finger becar-tse the grip of all lhe fingers simultaneously enables to form the hand into the right position and span. By nature, individual technical problems are divided into several steps of different difficulty. By way of example it is the arragement of changes in the 1st position or the practice of legato. The tutor is divided into three parts. Volume I - up to the second position - is aimed at developing the basic playing habits of both right and left hand, laying in this way a foundation for further study. The perfect mastering of the given material, corresponding in extent to the demands of the curriculum of the 1st cycle of the Popular School of Arts, is required for admission to the Conservatory. The subject matter of the problem in question is indicated in short headlines. Volume ll - from the first intermediate position to the fifth position - is aimed at the development and perfection of the acquired habits through more exacting drawing the bow, melodic progressions, the choice of key and rhytmic division. Volume lll - from'the third intermediate position upwards deals with the positions in which the thumb is not placed on the neck of the instrument and gradually also the funclional changes in the left hand position occur, including the later use of the third finger. By supplementing the preparatory exercises in the tl'ìumb position this volume is intended to conlribilte to the organic integration of the playing technique in the basic and thumb positions and, at the same time, to enable a fluent transiiicn tc the study of more demanding instructive literature" fundamental instrument in the group of the strings, ìts part becoming gradually independent, more moveable and relevant. The beginnigs of solo playing date from that time. Original valuable double-bass literature was written in addition to doublebass players also by notable composers of the European musical classicism. Later the double-bass found its place in practically every music genre. Skilìed contemporary perforrners, displaying the instrument's new wider range of expressicn, attract attention of present-day composers and inspire them to new works. The most famous double-bass pla, vers of the past were Domenico Dragonetti (1 763 - 1 846) Giovanni Bottesini (1821-1BBg) and Sergey Kussevitzky (1874-1951). The Prague Conservatory was the first outside ltaly to start - as early as 181 1 - the teaching of double-bass playing. Through his well-considered conception work, the very first professor Vàclav Hause (1764-1847) laid the foundations of the Czech double-bass schocl, whose significence soon lvent beyond the regional framework and influenced substantially the development of double-bass playìng in numerous European countries, while others were under the influence of the ltalian and Frencfr school, different prìmarily in holding the bow. Of the Czech double-bass players who were engaged as pedago2ues atlroad, not until the course of the l Bth century that it completely replaced the mosi fanrous was Frantiéek Simandl (1840 -'1 91:), Frofessor at the Vienna Conservatlry, whr:se etuejes i?iíi riiril nircng the best.
