léto se v Karlových Varech dělí na před- a po- festivalové. Ano,
Mezinárodní filmový festival je mezníkem, kdy se městu dostává
pozornosti celého, nejen filmového, světa. Jednu z hlavních rolí při
svátku kinematografie hraje také Grandhotel Pupp. Během deseti
červencových dnů je hotel bezpochyby místem s největší koncentrací
filmových celebrit a tvůrců na světě. Dveře si zde podávají hvězdy
filmového plátna s věhlasnými režiséry a významnými osobnostmi.

den Sommer teilt man in Karlsbad auf den vor und nach dem Festival. Ja, das Internationale
Filmfestival ist ein Zeitpunkt, wo die Stadt ins Blickfeld der ganzen Welt kommt, nicht nur
der des Filmes. Eine der Hauptrollen spielt während dieser Feier der Kinematografie auch
das Grandhotel Pupp. Innerhalb der zehn Juli-Tage ist das Hotel ohne Zweifel der Ort, wo
die höchste Anzahl der Filmstars und Filmer auf der Welt ist. Die Tür reichen sich hier die
Filmstars mit den berühmten Regisseuren und den bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten. Wir
denken an alle, alle bekommen unseren ausgezeichneten Service. Denselben Service von

There is a pre-festival and post-festival summer in Karlovy Vary. Yes, the International Film
Festival is the time when the town gets attention of the whole, not only the film world. The
Grandhotel Pupp, too, plays one of the main parts during the festival of cinematography.
The hotel is without doubt a place with the highest concentration of film celebrities and
creators in the world during the ten days in July. Stars of the film screen are followed by
renowned directors and prominent personalities. We think of them all, they all get our firstrate service. The service of the same high standards that we offer you, our guests, and that
we will never stop improving. That is why our attention and care do not distinguish between
the times before the festival, during the festival or after it; it is always the same – of the

Grandhotelu Pupp stalo předtančení finalistů
soutěže StarDance.

Wenn Karlsbad tanzt... Das war der Untertitel des
Kurballes der Stadt mit einem reichen kulturellen
und künstlerischen Programm, einer Modeschau
und einer Mitternachtsüberraschung. Die größte
Aufmerksamkeit erweckte das Vortanzen der
Finalisten des Wettbewerbs StarDance im Festsaal
von Grandhotel Pupp.
The Ball of the Town of Karlovy Vary
When Karlovy Vary dances... This was the subtitle
of the spa ball of the town with a varied cultural
programme, a fashion show and a midnight surprise.
The demonstration of a dance by the finalists of
the StarDance contest in the Festive Hall of the
Grandhotel Pupp was in the centre of attention.
Der Ball der gesundheitlich Behinderten im
Festsaal vom Grandhotel Pupp ist jedes Jahr ein
freundliches Treffen der Gesunden und der
Behinderten aus der ganzen Republik. Das Parket
ist sofort voll, mit ihren Begleitern tanzen auch
Leute im Rollstuhl. Den Tanz unterbrachen
Auftritte von Bewohnern der Sozialanstalten und
artistische Auftritte der eingeladenen Künstler.
Durch das bunte Programm begleitete bereits traditionell der gebürtige Karlsbader und der
Schauspieler Petr Rychlý. Dieses Jahr waren Gäste
des Abends der Senator Jan Horník und der
Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Karlsbad Werner
Hauptman. Ein traditioneller Partner vom Ball
Harmonie ist auch das Grandhotel Pupp.

Harmony Ball For the 16th Time
The ball of the disabled in the Festive Hall of the
Grandhotel Pupp is an annual friendly meeting of
both healthy and handicapped people from the
whole republic. The dance floor is full immediately and people in wheelchairs dance with their assistants. Dance is followed by performances of
people from welfare institutes and by acrobatic
numbers. The programme is traditionally presented by a native of Karlovy Vary, the actor Petr
Rychlý. The senator Jan Horník and the mayor of
the town Werner Hauptman were the guests of
the evening this year. The Grandhotel Pupp is
a traditional partner of the Harmony Ball.

Frühlingswochenende nach Karlsbad das blaue
Blut aus ganz Europa fließt. Unter Patronanz von
Dr. Otto von Habsburg treffen sich hier adelige
Damen und Herren mit verschiedenen Adelstiteln,
um der Welt deutlich klar zu machen, dass der
europäische Adel stets eine wichtige Rolle auch in
der neuzeitigen Geschichte des vereinten Europas
spielt. Auch dieses Jahr spielte sich ein Teil des
Programmes im Grandhotel Pupp ab. Der
Frühlingsball in dem Festsaal und den weiteren
Räumlichkeiten begrüßte an die 600 Aristokraten
aus vielen europäischen Ländern.
A Rendez-Vous of the European Aristocracy
As it has become a tradition, blue blood from the
whole of Europe flows to Karlovy Vary at a weekend in spring. Noble ladies and lords of different
hereditary titles meet here under Dr. Otto Hapsburg’s
auspices to make it clear to the world that the
European aristocracy keeps on playing an important
role in the modern history of united Europe. A part
of the programme was held in the Grandhotel Pupp
this year too. The spring ball welcomed about 600
aristocrats from many European countries in the
Festive Hall and other rooms.

Karlsbader Food Cup
Ein mittelalterlicher Umzug von Karl IV., die
Quellenweihe von dem päpstlichen Nuntius, eine
Messe, Märkte und Jahrmärkte, eine Reihe von
Konzerten, Theater und Kulturvorstellungen, ein
reiches Programm für Kinder, ein Feuerwerk und
ein Abend der Stadt Karlsbad im Grandhotel
Pupp oder das Karlsbader Frühstück in der
Marktkolonnade – das ist eine kurze Zusammen
fassung der Ereignisse des ersten Maiwochenendes,
als feierlich eine weitere Kursaison eröffnet wurde. Ein Bestandteil der Feierlichkeiten war auch
der I. Karlsbader Food Cup, ein Barkeeper und
Kellner-Wettbewerb, der von Grandhotel Pupp
mit veranstaltet wurde.
Im bekannten tschechischen Film Lauf, Ober, lauf!
rennen durch Karlsbad Hunderte von Kellnern mit
Tabletts. Auch dieser Film war Inspiration für den
Kellner-, Barkeeper und Kochwettbewerb, dessen
erster Jahrgang während der Kursaisoneröffnung
verlief. Es war nicht nur ein Fest der Kunst der
Meister der Teller, Gläser und Kochlöffel, sondern
auch eine Feier der traditionellen böhmischen
Küche und der Karlsbader Spezialitäten. Außer der
Sport- und Kochleistungen konnten die Besucher
auch viele lustige und drollige Situationen erleben.
Anreger von dieser neuen Karlsbader Tradition war
das Grandhotel Pupp, dessen Köche auch im gastronomischen Wettbewerb gewonnen haben.

A medieval Charles IV´s procession, consecrating the mineral springs by the papal nuncio, markets and fairs, a number of concerts,
cultural and theatre performances, a programme for children, fireworks and the evening of
the town of Karlovy Vary in the Grandhotel
Pupp or Karlovy Vary breakfast at the Market
Colonnade – this is just a brief list of events of
the 1st weekend in May when another spa
season was started. The Karlovy Vary Food
cup I, a competition of barmen and waiters
co-organized by the Grandhotel Pupp, was
a part of the celebration.
There is a scene with hundreds of waiters rushing
with trays in a famous Czech film “Run Away,
Waiter”. This film, too, was an inspiration for the
competition of headwaiters, barmen and cooks
which was held for the first time in the course of
the opening of the spa season. It was not only
a holiday presenting the art of masters of plates,
glasses and cooking spoons but also a celebration
of traditional Czech cuisine and Karlovy Vary specialities. Apart from sports and cooking performances, visitors could experience a number of enter
taining and comic situations. The initiator of the
new Karlovy Vary tradition was the Grandhotel Pupp
whose cooks also won the gastronomic competition.

The Grandhotel Pupp obtained a prestige certificate confirming the excellent quality of drinking
water in the hotel water main at the beginning of
this year. The Bioserf Research Institute arrived at
the following result after a detailed biochemical
analysis: water is ideal for drinking; it cleans the
organism and supports the regeneration of kidneys and livers. Drinking this water does not result in the formation of stones or gathering of salt
in joints, and it supports metabolism.

Byť nejmladší z gastronomických provozů
Grandhotelu Pupp, je Golf Restaurant pro své
vynikající služby již po několik let oceňován jak
hosty, tak odbornou veřejností. Počátkem tohoto
roku obdržel Golf Restaurant již počtvrté Cenu za
nejlepší restauraci na golfovém hřišti v České republice za rok 2008.

Ve známém českém filmu Vrchní prchni se
Karlovými Vary ženou stovky číšníků s podnosy. I tento film byl inspirací soutěže vrchních,
barmanů a kuchařů, jehož první ročník se uskutečnil v průběhu zahájení lázeňské sezóny. Byl
to nejen svátek prezentující umění mistrů talířů,
skleniček a vařečky, ale byla to i oslava tradiční
české kuchyně a karlovarských specialit. Kromě
sportovních a kuchařských výkonů mohli náv
štěvníci zažít i mnoho zábavných a komických
situací. Iniciátorem nové karlovarské tradice byl
Grandhotel Pupp, jehož kuchaři také zvítězili
v gastronomické soutěži.

Grandhotel Pupp se stal na počátku tohoto roku
držitelem prestižního certifikátu o vynikající kvalitě pitné vody v hotelové vodovodní síti. Bioserf
Research Institute po detailní biochemické analýze vydal následující rezultát: voda je ideální pro
pití, působí na organizmus jako podpůrný nástroj
pro čištění a obnovu funkce ledvin a jater; užití
této vody nezpůsobuje tvorbu kamenů a ukládání
soli v kloubech, posiluje metabolismus.

seine Gäste, als auch die Fachwelt. Am Anfang
dieses Jahres erhielt es bereits zum vierten Mal
in Folge den Preis für das beste Restaurant am
Golfplatz in der Tschechischen Republik für
das Jahr 2008.

Though it is the youngest of all gastronomic facilities of the Grandhotel Pupp, the first-rate service
of the Golf Restaurant has been appreciated by
both its guests and the professional public for several years already. It has been for the fourth time
in succession that it received the prize for the Best
Restaurant at a Golf Course in the Czech Republic
in 2008 at the beginning of this year.

Fahndung nach der berühmten Familie Pupp
Drei Jahrhunderte lang trägt das Grandhotel Pupp
den Namen der berühmten Familie seiner Gründer.
Der Name Pupp wurde zum Synonym der
Tradition und der Gastfreundlichkeit nicht nur in
Karlsbad und in der Tschechischen Republik,
sondern auch in der ganzen Welt. Im Grandhotel
Pupp ist man sich stets bewusst, dass man
Verantwortung für die Pflege dieser Marke und
für den Nachlass hat. Diesen trägt man mit sich
aus der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart und in
die Zukunft. Die Hotelleitung entschloss sich zu
einer umfangreichen Fahndungsaktion mit dem
Ziel möglichst viele Träger des Namens Pupp zu
finden. Auf Grund aller zugänglichen Quellen
bemüht man sich die Verwandten anzusprechen,
die heute in der ganzen Welt verstreut sind. Am
Ende dieser Forschung sollte ein einmaliges treffen am Ort stattfinden, wo die Gründer der
Familie lebten - im Grandhotel Pupp. „Pupps im
Pupp“ ist der Name der neuen Tradition, die auch
in den weiteren Jahrhunderten der Marke Pupp
den verdienten Ruf beibehält.

rekreační středisko vojenské generality? V prosinci
1951 propukl díky nedbalosti či opilosti vojáků
požár a nenávratně zničil řadu cenných interiérů.

Po tři staletí nese Grandhotel Pupp jméno slavného rodu svých zakladatelů. Jméno Pupp se stalo
synonymem tradice a pohostinnosti nejen v Kar
lových Varech a České republice, ale i v celém
světě. Grandhotel Pupp si stále uvědomuje odpovědnost za péči o tuto značku a za odkaz, který
s sebou nese z minulosti do současnosti a budoucnosti. Vedení hotelu se rozhodlo k rozsáhlé
pátrací akci s cílem najít co nejvíce jmenovců rodu
Puppů. Podle všech dostupných pramenů se snaží
oslovit příbuzné, kteří jsou dnes rozeseti po celém
světě. Na konci tohoto pátrání by se mělo uskutečnit jedinečné setkání v místě, kde žili zakladatelé

The Grandhotel Pupp has been bearing the name
of the famous family of its founders for three
centuries. The name Pupp has become the synonym of tradition and hospitality not only in
Karlovy Vary and the Czech Republic but also in
the whole world. The Grandhotel Pupp is aware
of its responsibility for the care of this trademark
and the legacy it has been taking with it from the
past to the present and future. The management
of the hotel decided to start an extensive search
operation whose aim is to find as many name
holders of the Pupp family as possible. Using all
available sources it is trying to address relatives
who are dispersed in the whole world today.
A unique meeting in the place where the founders
of the family lived – the Grandhotel Pupp –
should be at the end of this searching. “The
Pupps in the Pupp” is the name of the new tradition which will maintain the trademark Pupp in
the centre of attention in the following centuries.

Georg Pupp nach Karlsbad als gelernter Konditor
kam und Popp hieß? Bis heute ist unbekannt,
warum es zur kleinen Namenskorrektur kam, die
den Namen dem Grandhotel Pupp gab.

Georg Pupp, came to Karlovy Vary as a skilled
confectioner and his name was Popp? We do not
know the reasons why he altered it creating so
a name which later became a part of the
Grandhotel Pupp´s name.
...die Gäste von Johann Georg Pupp Ende des
18. und am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts fast alle
Größen seiner Zeit waren? Nennen wir die Kaiserin
Maria Theresia, Friedrich den Großen, die Zarin
Katharina, General Laudon, den Dichter Schiller,
den Weltbummler Casanova, der sich mehrmals
zum Kaffee mit Johann Wolfgang Goethe traf.
...im Jahre 1950 nach dem kommunistischen Akt,
als das Hotel auf Grandhotel Moskva umbenannt
wurde, es hier ein Erholungszentrum für die
Generalität gab? Im Dezember 1951 brach dank
Nachlässigkeit oder dank Betrunkenheit der
Soldaten ein Feuer aus, das eine Reihe von wertvollen Innenräumen für immer zerstörte.

Pro kuchyni Grandhotelu Pupp je to také výzva, aby

The specific atmosphere and the spirit of hospitality of the Grandhotel Pupp as well as tradition
attract lots of future married couples every summer to say their “Yes, I do” and to spend their
wedding time just here. It is a challenge for the
kitchen of the Grandhotel Pupp to contribute to
the uniqueness of each wedding with its gastronomic products. A wedding, an ideal beginning of
a harmonious wedding knot of a man and a woman, consists of a ceremony and customs. One of
the rituals, and definitely an important one, is the
wedding reception. Master cooks therefore try to
serve meals which are harmoniously balanced
and which can satisfy the taste buds of the most
discriminating wedding guests. And if it is a Czech
wedding, attention has to be especially paid to
Czech traditional cuisine. It is based on historical
traditions though the wedding menu has a modern form which respects trends of modern gastronomy. No Czech wedding can usually be with
out soup with liver dumplings and one of the
most traditional meals of Czech cuisine – roast
sirloin in cream sauce, dumplings and cranberries.
One of many variations of multistorey wedding
cakes stands at the beginning of the sweet life of
the newly married couple. However, there is one
danger you should watch out for: the husband
might ask his wife to cook as delicious meals as
were those cooked by master cooks for their
wedding in the Grandhotel Pupp. A wish that can

A truffle is considered a king of fungi and an exclusive
delicacy owing to its unique taste and intensive aroma.
It is popular with lots of gourmets. However, you
cannot take a basket and set off for the forest to get
some – you would look for it uselessly. Truffles grow
underground and different methods tested by centuries
are used to find them. Trained boars and dogs seem to
be the best at finding them. It is not a cheap delicacy
because of its difficult availability. However, it is said
that the invested means equal the aphrodisiac effects
of truffles, especially the summer black ones.

Téměř celý profesní život Vlaďky Příhodové je
spojen s Grandhotelem Pupp. Od absolutoria
v oboru kuchař-číšník v roce 1992 prošla téměř
veškeré pozice v gastronomickém provozu hotelu:
od pracovišť v jednotlivých restauracích, přes
Chef de Partie a Chef de Partie Banquete až na
velitelský můstek - šéfkuchař Grandhotelu Pupp.
Má za sebou řadu úspěšných prezentací českého
kuchařského umění v Bruselu, Římě či Bangkoku
a na kuchařských soutěžích získala pro sebe a věhlasný hotel mnoho ocenění. Dodnes vstřebává
nové inspirace a zkušenosti ze sympozií a seminářů. Již řadu let se v průběhu filmového festivalu
podílí na přípravě specialit pro hvězdy filmového
plátna a další světové celebrity, jejichž dočasným
domovem se první červencový týden stává
Grandhotel Pupp. Kuchařské řemeslo se v Grand
hotelu Pupp předává z generace na generaci už po
tři staletí. Stejně jako Vlaďka Příhodová sama
dříve čerpala znalosti, dovednosti a zkušenosti od
svých starších kolegů, nyní je předává dále - mladým adeptům kulinářského umění. Je to podle
jejích slov jediná správná cesta k tomu, aby „svému“ hotelu vrátila alespoň část toho, co jí v životě

beruflichen Abschluss im Fach Koch-Kellner im
Jahre 1992 war sie beinahe an allen Arbeitsstellen
im gastronomischen Betreib des Hotels: von den
Arbeitsstellen in den einzelnen Restaurants, über
Chef de Partie und Chef de Partie Banquete bis zur
Kommandobrücke – zur Chefköchin von Grandhotel
Pupp. Sie hat hinter sich eine Reihe von erfolgreichen Präsentationen der böhmischen Kochkunst in
Brüssel, Rom oder Bangkok und auf den
Kochwettbewerben erhielt sie für sich und das
berühmte Hotel viele Würdigungen. Bis heute sammelt sie neue Inspirationen und Erfahrungen an
Symposien und an Seminaren. Viele Jahre beteiligt
sie sich im Verlauf des Filmfestivals an der
Vorbereitung von Spezialitäten für die Filmstars und
die weiteren Weltstars, derer vorübergehendes
Zuhause in der ersten Juliwoche das Grandhotel
Pupp wird. Das Kochhandwerk wird im Grandhotel
Pupp von Generation zu Generation seit drei
Jahrhunderten übergeben. Genauso wie Vlaďka
Příhodová früher selbst das Können, die Kenntnisse
und die Erfahrungen von ihren älteren Kollegen
schöpfte, nun übergibt sie sie weiter – den jungen
Anwärtern der kulinarischen Kunst. Es ist laut ihren
Worten der einzige richtige Weg dazu, damit sie
"ihrem" Hotel wenigstens ein Teil davon zurückgibt, was es ihr im Leben gab. Für den Gast vom
beliebigen Restaurant im Grandhotel Pupp kann es
keine höhere Qualitätsgarantie geben, als einen
Chefkoch, der mit dem Hotel aufwuchs und der
darin bereits seit den Gesellenjahren lebt. Aus dem
Handwerk wird somit eine Kunst, die auch die
anspruchsvollsten Kenner schätzen.

Almost all professional life of Vlaďka Příhodová
has been connected with the Grandhotel Pupp.
She finished her cook and waiter branch of
study in 1992 and has held almost all positions
in the gastronomic facilities of the hotel since

those days: from workplaces in individual restaurants up to the Chef de Partie, the Chef de
Partie Banquete and, finally, the “navigating
bridge” – the post of the chef of the Grandhotel
Pupp. She has prepared a number of successful
presentations of the Czech art of cooking in
Brussels, Rome or Bangkok and has won a lot
of prizes for herself and the renowned hotel at
competitions of cooking. She has been absorbing new inspirations and experience from
symposiums and vocational trainings until today. She has been taking part in the preparation
of specialities for the stars of the film screen and
other world-famous celebrities whose temporary home is the Grandhotel Pupp during the first
week in July when the International Film
Festival takes place. The trade of cook has been
handed over from one generation to another in
the Grandhotel Pupp for three centuries already.
Vlaďka Příhodová used to draw knowledge,
skills and experience from her older colleagues
and she is handing them over to young novices
at culinary art today. She says that it is the only
way how to give back “her” hotel at least a part
of what it has given her in her lifetime. There is
not any better guarantee of quality for a guest in
any of the restaurants of the Grandhotel Pupp
than a chef who grew up in the hotel and has
lived in it since his young years. A trade changes
into art which is appreciated by the most discriminating connoisseurs.

vody 34-36°C má význam hygienický, uklidňující
a zvyšuje diurézu (vylučování moči ledvinami). Je
vhodná při nespavosti, u celé řady neurologických potíží či obezity. Voda teplá 37-38°C působí
velmi intenzivně na kosterní svalstvo. Koupel
o teplotě 38-40°C je již intenzivně prohřívající
a slouží k léčbě chorob pohybového aparátu.
Velmi účinné a oblíbené jsou v koupelích aromatické oleje a bylinné přísady. Je známo též mnoho
přísadových koupelí. Sirná koupel pomáhá při
kožních a revmatických chorobách, zánětech dýchacích cest, svalových bolestech. Uhličitá koupel
se používá při léčbě některých srdečních a cévních onemocnění. Jejím základem je horká minerální voda, do ní se přidává studená, nasycená
kysličníkem uhličitým. Jódová koupel je 38°C
teplá lázeň. V minerální vodě je rozpuštěn jodid
draselný aktivovaný chloraminem B. Jód proniká
kůží do organizmu a příznivě působí při léčbě
onemocnění pohybového aparátu.

Bäder im Mineralwasser gehörten zu grundlegenden therapeutischen Methoden schon in alten Zeiten.
Die positive Wahrnehmung des flüssigen Mittels
trägt jeder von uns in sich schon seit der Zeit seiner
pränatalen Entwicklung. Bei Bädern nutzt man die
physikalische Wirkung des Wassers aus, die noch
weitere Faktoren verstärken, wie z.B. die Temperatur
des Wassers, verschiedene Zusatzstoffe, Wirkung
der Luft oder die elektrische Energie. Die Bäder
können Gesamt-, Teil- oder Sitzbäder sein. Das Bad
im Wasser, dessen Temperatur 34-36°C ist, hat eine hygienische und beruhigende Wirkung und erhöht die Diurese (Ausscheidung von Harn durch
Nieren). Es eignet sich bei Schlaflosigkeit, einer
Reihe von neurologischen Beschwerden oder
Fettleibigkeit. Das Wasser, das 37-38°C warm ist,

Water whose temperature ranges from 38 to
40°C has an intensive warming up effect and is
used in the treatment of the locomotory system.
Aromatic oils and herbal substances in baths are
very effective and popular. We also know a lot of
baths with various substances. A sulphur bath
helps to treat skin and rheumatic diseases, inflammatory diseases of the air passages and painful
muscles. Carbon dioxide bath is used in the treatment of some heart and vascular diseases. The
basis of the bath is hot mineral water. It is mixed
with cold water which is saturated with carbon
dioxide. The iodine bath is a warm bath (38°C).
Potassium iodide activated with chloroamine B is
dissolved in water. Iodine gets into the organism
through skin and is very useful and effective when
diseases of the locomotory system are treated.

wirkt sehr intensiv auf Skelettmuskeln. Das Bad,
das 38-40°C warm ist, hat einen durchwärmenden
Effekt und wird bei der Behandlung des
Bewegungsapparats benutzt. Sehr wirkungsvoll und
beliebt sind Bäder mit Kreuterzusätzen. Man kennt
auch viele Bäder mit Zusatzstoffen. Das Schwefelbad
hilft bei Haut - und rheumatischen Krankheiten,
Entzündungen der Atemwege und schmerzhaften
Muskeln. Kohlendioxidbad benutzt man bei der
Behandlung von einigen Herz- und
Gefässkrankheiten. In das heisse Wasser mischt
man kaltes, mit Kohlendioxid gesättigtes Wasser.
Das Jodbad ist ein 38°C warmes Bad. Im
Mineralwasser wird Kaliumjodid aufgelöst, das man
mit Chloramin B aktivierte. Jod dringt durch die
Haut in das Organismus durch und wirkt positiv bei
der Behandlung des Bewegungsapparats.

hotelu v Karlových Varech

začalo říkat Puppovská alej, neboť po roce 1778
patřila majiteli Českého sálu Johannu Georgu
Puppovi. Jako zajímavost připomeňme, že císař
Karel VI. při své návštěvě Karlových Varů v roce
1732 uspořádal za ještě mladou Alejí střelecké
závody, jejichž vítězové si odnesli stříbrné ceny
v hodnotě 1 000 tolarů. Alej se stala prvním lázeňským a zábavním parkem Karlových Varů.

Některé šlechtické oslavy v 18. století občas
v Karlových Varech překročily rámec slušnosti,
a tak český zemský sněm vydal přísné nařízení
tohoto znění: Pokud se nějaký obyvatel Království
Českého urozeného původu, ať je to kdokoliv,
chová v Karlových Varech tak, že nepřístojně narušuje klid a svévolně dává podnět k hněvu, budiž
tento jeden až dva roky či déle zavřen v Bílé věži
Pražského hradu, nebo se musí na vlastní náklady
odebrat do některé maďarské káznice-pevnosti.
Je-li to cizinec, nechť je zavřen do loketského
hradu, kde si odsedí trest, jaký mu stanoví Jeho
Výsost či vrchní dvormistr Království Českého.
Víme, že v roce 1701 byl na přání a za finančního
a materiálního přispění Augusta II. na prostranství
před Becherovou Loukou postaven Saský sál, původně zvaný jen Lusthaus či Sál.
Patrně někdy před rokem 1715 (snad 1708?) vybudoval ekonomicky prozíravý karlovarský starosta Andreas Wenzel Becher na své už zmíněné
louce v těsné blízkosti Saského sálu konkurenční
Český sál. Z rodinné kroniky Puppů, kterou koncem 19. století napsala paní Marie PuppováMattoni se dozvídáme, že v roce 1759 chtěl řád
Milosrdných bratří přebudovat Český sál na klášter, jejich plán však Karlovarští rázně odmítli.
Saský sál zakoupil v roce 1801 Philipp Valentin
Keil včetně zahrady se stromy za částku 8 000
zlatých konvenční měny. Keil byl bývalý komorník častého návštěvníka a milovníka Karlových

Keil zavedl v patře Saského sále užitečnou gastronomickou novinku, tzv. Table d‘hote, německy
Freitafel, což byl první veřejně přístupný restaurant
v Karlových Varech, v němž se kromě nápojů podávala během dne i teplá a studená jídla dle objednávky hostů. Předtím bylo možno v sálech (mimo
slavnosti) zakoupit jen nápoje a pečivo. Svůj nový
restaurant v Saském sále inzeroval Valentin Keil
tímto veřejným plakátovým oznámením:
Níže podepsaný tímto oznamuje, že se stal majitelem Saského sálu v Karlových Varech. V prvním
patře Sálu jsem zřídil dvě jídelny, jež budou provozovány v různých časech a v různých cenových
relacích. Hosté tu mají k dispozici též několik pokojů pro setkávání uzavřených společností. Budu
poctěn návštěvou urozeného publika a nabídnu
mu levné ceny. V přízemí se nadále budou konat

Saský sál byl starší a všeobecně známější, proto
byl více navštěvován než Český sál. Becherovský
Lusthaus neboli Český sál se začal kvalitou svých
pohostinských služeb výrazně vzmáhat až poté, co
dostal roku 1778 nového podnikavého majitele,
totiž cukráře a hostinského Johanna Georga
Puppa, jenž se přiženil do zámožné karlovarské
rodiny Mitterbacherů. V roce 1814 byl starý barokní Saský sál z roku 1701 přestavěn do podoby,
kterou si v podstatě podržel až do své demolice
po roce 1890. Oba sály, Saský i Český, se v průběhu své existence staly dějištěm nesčetných
(mnohdy velmi bizarních!) oslav, koncertů a před
stavení, které jsou nesmazatelně zapsány do pomyslné zlaté kroniky karlovarských dějin.
Na Louce u Českého sálu bylo v roce 1728 vysázeno dvanáct řad lip, z nichž časem vyrostly mohutné košaté stromy, jež v létě dávaly příjemný
stín. Mezi stromy nechal majitel Českého sálu vytvořit pohodlné, pískem vysypané cesty s lavičkami. Někdejší květinová Louka se výsadbou lipového stromořadí proměnila v tzv. Alej, jíž se později

sich in Karlsbad ruhestörerisch, mutwillig und ärgernisgebend benimmt, so soll er ein bis zwei
Jahre und noch länger im Weißen Turm der
Prager Burg sitzen oder auch sich auf eigene
Kosten in eine ungarische Festung begeben: ist er
ein Ausländer, soll er in die Elbogner Burg geliefert werden und dort die Strafe bestehen, welche
das von seiner Majestät oder dem Oberhofmeister
des Königreiches Böhmen gesprochene Urteil
über ihn verhängt.
Man weiß, dass im Jahre 1701 auf Wunsch und
mit finanziellen und materiellen Unterstützung
von August II. am Platz vor der Becher Wiese der
sog. Sächsische Saal gebaut wurde. Ursprünglich
nur das Lusthaus oder der Saal genannt.
Wahrscheinlich irgendwann vor dem Jahre 1715
(vielleicht 1708?) erbaute der ökonomisch vor
aussehende Karlsbader Bürgermeister Andreas
Wenzel Becher auf seiner, bereits erwähnten
Wiese, in der unmittelbaren Nähe des Sächsischen
Saales den konkurrierenden Böhmischen Saal.
Aus der Familienchronik der Pupps, die Ende des
19. Jahrhunderts Frau Maria Pupp-Mattoni schrieb,
erfährt man, dass im Jahre 1759 der Orden der
Barmherzigen Brüder den Böhmischen Saal zu
einem Kloster umbauen wollte. Seinen Plan lehnten die Karlsbader aber resolut ab.

Ogilvie Findlater (häufiger Besucher und
Liebhaber von Karlsbad) kaufte ihn von Johann
Hieronym Deiml einschließlich des Gartens mit
Bäumen für die Summe von 8 000 Gulden der
Konventionswährung. Keil führte in der Etage des
Sächsischen Saales eine nützliche gastronomische
Neuheit ein, sog. Table d´hote, deutsch Freitafel.
Es war das erste frei zugängliche Restaurant
in Karlsbad, in dem man außer Getränken im
Laufe des Tages auch warme und kalte Speisen
nach Bestellung der Gäste servierte. Vorher war
es möglich in den Sälen (außer den Feiern) nur
Getränke und Gebäck zu kaufen. Für sein neues
Restaurant im Sächsischen Saal warb Valentin
Keil mit dieser öffentlichen Plakatanzeige:
Unterzeichneter hat die Ehre, das Publikum zu benachrichtigen, daß er in Carlsbad das unter dem
Namen des sächsischen Saales bekannte Haus in
Besitz genommen hat, und in demselben den ers
ten Stock, wo er zwey Freytafeln zu verschiedenen
Stunden und zu verschiedenen Preisen halten
wird, hat einrichten lassen. Auch stehen außer dem
mehrere Zimmer zu den Befehlen derjenigen
Personen in Bereitschaft, welche in geschloßenen
Gesellschaften zu seyn wünschen. Er schmeichelt
sich, daß die Herren Fremden, die ihm die Ehre
erzeigen wollen, zu ihm zu kommen, vollkommen
zufrieden seyn werden, und verspricht billige
Preise. Die Bälle und Billards bleiben wie bisher in

Böhmische Saal. Im Jahre 1814 wurde der alte
barocke Sächsische Saal aus dem Jahre 1701 in
die Gestallt umgebaut, die er, im Grunde genommen, bis in sein Abriss nach dem Jahre 1890 behielt. Das Becher Lusthaus, bzw. der Böhmische
Saal erhöhte deutlich die Qualität seiner gastwirt
schaftlichen Dienstleistungen erst dann, als er im
Jahre 1778 einen neuen unternehmenslustigen
Eigentümer bekam, nämlich den Konditor und
Gastwirt Johann Georg Pupp, der in die reiche
Karlsbader Familie Mitterbacher heiratete. Beide
Säle, Sächsischer, sowie Böhmischer, wurden
während ihres Bestehens Schauplatz von zahlreichen (häufig sehr bizarren!) Feiern, Konzerten
und Vorstellungen, die in die erdachte goldene
Chronik der Karlsbader Geschichte unvergesslich
eingetragen sind.
Auf der Wiese bei dem Böhmischen Saal wurden
im Jahre 1728 zwölf Reihen Linden ausgesetzt, aus
denen im Laufe der Zeit mächtige breitkronige

Bäume wuchsen, die im Sommer angenehmen
Schatten spendeten. Zwischen den Bäumen wurden
vom Eigentümer des Böhmischen Saales bequeme,
mit Sand bestreute Wege mit Bänken errichtet. Die
ehemalige Blumenwiese verwandelte sich durch
Aufpflanzung einer Reihe von Linden in sog. Allee,
die man später Puppische Allee nannte. Denn nach
dem Jahre 1778 gehörte sie dem Eigentümer des
Böhmischen Saales Johann Georg Pupp. Es ist interessant, dass Kaiser Karel VI. während seines
Besuches in Karlsbad im Jahre 1732, hinter der
noch jungen Allee ein Schützenfest veranstaltete,
dessen Gewinner Silberpreise im Wert von 1 000
Taler erhielten. Die Allee wurde zum ersten Kurund Vergnügungspark von Karlsbad.

Occasionally, some festivities of the nobility held
in Carlsbad in the 18th century overstepped the limits of decency even by today’s standards forcing
the Czech National Assembly to issue a strict regulation of the following wording: Should any of the
inhabitants of the Kingdom of Bohemia of noble
birth, whoever it may be, conduct himself in
Carlsbad in a manner disturbing the peace and
wilfully bringing about anger, such individual shall
be imprisoned in the White Tower of Prague Castle
for one or two years or more, or shall adjourn to
a house of correction – fortress in Hungary at his
own account. If a foreigner, he shall be imprisoned
at Loket Castle where he shall serve his time to
which he was sentenced by His Highness or the
High Chamberlain of the Kingdom of Bohemia.
In 1701, Saxony Hall – originally known under the
name Lusthaus or Hall – was built at the request,
and with the financial and material contribution of,
August II at the site overlooking Becher’s meadow.
Sometime before 1715 (presumably in 1708), the
economically foresighted Carlsbad Mayor, Andreas
Wenzel Becher, built the competitive Czech Hall on
his already mentioned meadow near Saxony Hall.
From the Pupp family chronicle written by Marie
Pupp-Mattoni in the late 19th century, we learn that
in 1759 an order of Merciful brothers wanted to
convert the hall into a monastery. Their plan, however, was rejected by the councillors of Carlsbad.
Saxony Hall, along with a garden and trees, was
purchased in 1801 by Philipp Valentin Keil,
a former butler to a Scottish peer, James Ogilvy,
7th Earl of Findlater (a frequent visitor to and
an admirer of Carlsbad), for the sum of 8,000
guldens. Keil introduced a useful gastronomic
novelty on the first floor of the Saxony Hall:
table d’hôte (or Freitafel in German) and with it
the first public restaurant in Carlsbad where,
apart from beverages, hot and cold meals were
served to the guests during the day. Previously,
with the exception of festive events, only beverages and pastries were offered in the halls.
Valentin Keil advertised his new restaurant at
Saxony Hall with the following poster announcement: The below signed hereby announces
that he has become the owner of the Saxony
Hall in Carlsbad. Two dining rooms have been
opened on the first floor of the hall and they
shall offer different opening hours as well as
price ranges. Several rooms for private gatherings are also available to the guests. I shall be
honoured by the visit of gentle people to whom
I may offer inexpensive prices. The ground floor
will continue to be the venue of balls and billiard

Saxony Hall was older and more renowned and,
thus, it welcomed more visitors than Czech Hall. In
1814, the old Baroque hall from 1701 was reconstructed to a form, which it retained until it was
demolition after the year 1890. Becher’s Lusthaus,
or Czech Hall, significantly increased the quality of
its hospitality services after it was taken over by an
enterprising new owner in 1778: confectioner and
inn-keeper, Johann Georg Pupp who married into
the rich Mitterbacher family from Carlsbad. During
their existence, both Saxony and Czech Hall were
the venues of numerous (and often quite bizarre!)
celebrations, concerts, and performances which
are indelibly recorded in the imaginary golden
chronicle of Carlsbad history,
In 1728, twelve rows of lime trees were planted
in the Meadow near to Czech Hall. Over time, the
trees grew, spreading their branches and providing
a pleasant shade in summer and sandy paths with
benches were built in the Meadow. The lime trees
transformed the once green meadow into the
flower covered Alley, which later acquired the
name Pupp Alley after its owner Johann Georg
Pupp who purchased it in 1778. It is worth mentioning that during his visit to Carlsbad in 1732,
Emperor Charles VI held a shooting competition
behind the then juvenile alley, the winners of
which received silver prizes worth 1,000 thalers.
The Alley also became the first spa and amusement park in Carlsbad.

Na jihovýchod od Karlových Varů, uprostřed krásné a čisté krajiny v údolí Manětínského potoka,
leží městečko Manětín. V písemných pramenech je
poprvé připomínán k roku 1169, kdy byl darován
králem Vladislavem II. pražským johanitům.
Koncem 16. století byl v centru města postaven
renezanční zámek. Po požáru v roce 1712 si nechala tehdejší majitelka Marie G. Lažanská vybudovat
nové sídlo, které má protáhlý půdorys ve tvaru
písmene L. Dnes je v něm rozsáhlá expozice s barokním mobiliářem a unikátní kolekcí třinácti obrazů zámeckého služebnictva. Jižní průčelí se otevírá do
obnovené barokní zahrady, na niž navazuje zámecký
park. V době baroka město obohatily ještě další
krásné stavby, například poutní kostel sv. Barbory
a gotický kostel sv. Jana Křtitele. Ten je spojen krytou
chodbou se zámkem a jeho věž má typickou barokní
báň se zvonicí. Všechny návštěvníky Manětína překvapuje množství a kvalita barokních soch a božích
muk, pocházejících z konce 17. a celého 18. století.
Pozdně barokní měšťanské domy na náměstí a podél
hlavní komunikace dotvářejí kolorit bývalého významného města, které se dnes opět dostává do popředí zájmu turistů a návštěvníků.
Terasa zámku nabízí 26.6. a 3.7. divadelní představení, 6.6., 20.6., 18.7., a 15.8. koncerty vážné
hudby.
Südöstlich von Karlsbad, umgeben von einer schönen
und reinen Landschaft, im Tal des Manetiner Baches,
liegt das Städtchen Manetin. In den schriftlichen
Quellen wird es zum ersten Mal im Jahre 1169 erwähnt, als es vom König Vladislav II. den Prager
Johannitern geschenkt wurde. Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts
wurde im Stadtzentrum ein Renaissanceschloss erbaut.
Nach dem Brand im Jahre 1712 ließ der damalige
Eigentümer Václav J. Lažanský und später seine Ehefrau
und sein Sohn einen neuen Sitz errichten, der einen
lang geschreckten Grundriss in Form des Buchstabens
L hat. Heute gibt es hier eine umfangreiche Ausstellung
mit dem Barockmobiliar und mit einer einmaligen
Kollektion von 13 Bildern der Schlossdienstboten. Der
südliche Flügel öffnet sich in einen wieder hergerichteten
Barockgarten, an den der Schlosspark anschließt. In der
Barockzeit bereicherten die Stadt noch weitere schöne
Gebäude, zum Beispiel die Wallfahrtskirche der Hl.
Barbara und die gotische Kirche des Hl. Johannes des
Täufers. Diese ist mit einem überdachten Gang mit dem
Schloss verbunden und ihr Turm hat eine typische
Barockkuppel mit einem Glockenturm. Alle Besucher von
Manetin staunen über die Menge und die Qualität der
Barockstatuen und der Martersäulen, die aus dem Ende
des 17. und dem ganzen 18. Jahrhundert stammen. Die
Spätbarocken Bürgerhäuser am Marktplatz und entlang
der Hauptstraße vervollständigen die Atmosphäre der einst
bedeutenden Stadt, die heute wieder in den Vordergrund des
Interessens der Touristen und der Besucher kommt.
Die Schlossterrasse bietet am 26.6., 3.7. Theater
vorstellungen und am 6.6., 20.6., 18.7., 15.8.

The little town of Manětín lies southeast of
Karlovy Vary, in the middle of beautiful and pure
scenery in the valley of the brook Manětínský. It
was first recorded in 1169 when King Vladislav II
gave it to the Prague Knights of St. John of
Jerusalem as a present. A Renaissance chateau was
built in the town centre in the late 16th century. Its
owner at that time, Václav J. Lažanský, and later
his wife and son, had a new seat built after the fire
in 1712. It has a long, L-shaped ground plan.
There is an extensive exhibition of Baroque furniture and a unique collection of 13 paintings of
domestic servants in it today. The southern front
faces a renovated Baroque garden which passes
into a park. Further beautiful buildings appeared in
the town at the time of Baroque, such as the St.
Barbora Church or the gothic John the Baptist
Church. A roofed passage connects the latter one
with the chateau and its spire has a typical
Baroque cupola with a belfry. All visitors to
Manětín are surprised by the quantity and quality
of Baroque statues and wayside shrines which
date from the late 17th and the whole 18th century. Late Baroque houses in the square put finishing
touches to the atmosphere of the formerly important town which is becoming more and more popular with tourists and visitors today.
Theatre performances (26th June, 3rd July) and
concerts of classical music (6th and 20th June,
18th July and 15th August) will be held at the
terrace of the chateau.
