Global Change Research Institute CAS let the visitor enter the kingdom of plants by means of the exposition called The Excursion to the World of Plants, and the Institute of Experimental Botany CAS prepared an exhibition called Come and Look at the Life Processes in Plants. The exposition Proteus, simulating gravitation field and its influence on the objects, also attracted a large audience. Other visitors were seduced by interactive exhibitions prepared by Charles University. 03 08 Regional cities also contributed to the Festival with their rich programmes. The shopping centre Forum Nová Karolina in Ostrava introduced an exhibition called Czech Scientists and their Inventions. The innovative potential of Moravia was presented in Brno by the exhibition Moravian Firms in Patents. South Bohemia Region pleased the visitors by World below our Feet, an exhibition prepared in cooperation with Biology Centre CAS. 01, 02 Exhibitions Medicine of the Future and What the Eye Doesn’t See prepared by Charles University attracted the youngest visitors. 03 iQLANDIA’s main attractions were interactive expositions. 04 Work with the microscope demonstrated by specialists at the Institute of Experimental Botany. 05 The 3D printer was always crowded. 06 The visitors also enjoyed the exhibition Light is Life dedicated to the International Year of Light. 07 When the naked eye is not enough, the researchers seek help from more and more advanced technology – microscope, satellite, thermal camera or computer visualisation. 08 The visitors had a unique opportunity to taste the role of a host at the Czech TV programme Zprávičky. 09 The unique mobile planetarium was always fully occupied. 01 02 03 Lectures Lectures, as is the tradition, enhanced the programme of the Week of Science and Technology CAS 2015. Their variety and number is larger and larger every year. The 15th edition of the Festival offered 316 lectures in Prague and other cities of the country’s regions. Every year, the lectures are divided into three research areas. In this way, the topics can address both secondaryschool students and the general public with their varied interests and offer each visitor a possibility to choose exactly the subject that attracts them primarily. It is not exceptional that the interested visitors outnumber the available seats and more chairs are required to seat everybody. A great asset can be seen in online broadcasts or telecasts and their recordings published on the web pages of the Festival. Anyone who did not have time to catch a desired presentation can choose the time to watch it later from their home computers. Lectures or talks can also be found at science cafés. These meetings take place in smaller premises with only a smaller audience. Their charm resides especially in closer distance between the presenter and the listener, which gives the participants a better opportunity to discuss the given topic. Faust House in Prague or the bookshop Academia at the Wenceslas Square are typical places for science cafés. Places of a similar atmosphere are used for science cafés in Brno and other towns. 04 05 06 07 08 09 01 Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Klokočník, DrSc., Astronomical Institute CAS, speaking with full commitment about Chinese pyramids and raising the question of their astronomical orientation. 02 The enthusiastic audience rewarded the presenter with a big clap of hands. Popularizing lectures are always highly sought-after by secondary-school students. 03 Prof. Josef Syka, Institute of Experimental Medicine, in his lecture at the venerable Carolinum is describing the relationship between the brain, speech and music. 04During a science café at the Faust House, RNDr. Marek Kotrlý won the attention of the audience while describing interesting cases from the expert work at the Institute of Criminalistics Prague. 05 Seamless functioning of the Week of Science and Technology CAS is also assisted by the volunteers from The College of Media and Journalism Prague, who help in the demanding organizational tasks. 06 Prof. Petr Widimský, The Third Faculty of Medicine Charles University, talking about three most common causes of deaths in the developed countries – heart attack, tumors and stroke. 07 Prof. Michal Křížek, Institute of Mathematics, is revealing the Magic of Numbers at the Aula Minor of the Carolinum. 08 Prorector of Charles University prof. Jan Royt honoured Czech Academy of Sciences to share with the audience his profound knowledge of Jan Hus and the Utraquist iconography in the Czech lands of the 15th and first half of the 16th centuries. 09 The prospective candidates for the President of the Czech Academy of Sciences? 01 02 03 04 Science show Workshops Presentations of science in the form of science shows have become an inseparable part of the programme. Each year, they host skillful popularisers from iQLANDIA Liberec. Still another indispensable and unforgettable performer at the Festival is Dr. Michael Londesborough from the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry CAS. In 2015, the opportunities for science shows opened up larger at the Festival – there were altogether 13 events and all of them received a very warm welcome. Some of them took place at the individual Institutes of the CAS during their Open Days, other science shows were performed autonomously. Science show as a special form of presenting science appears attractive for the general public including the youngest schoolchildren. Another type of the multitude of events offered by the Festival are workshops. They appear in the forms of science performances, making of a TV programme, and other interesting formats that involve the audience in unusual but stimulating activities. The 2015 Festival prepared 11 such events presenting the visitors with the precious gift of unforgettable experiences. 01 The same as every year, the popular iQLANDIA from Liberec introduced a spectrum of visually attractive experiments involving the audience. 02 The popular researcher Dr. Michael Londesborough, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, flabbergasting the audience at the Large Hall of Municipal Library of Prague by fascinating experiments accompanied with spectacular loud explosions. 03 The colourful and varied programme of the Festival catches the attention of the visitors of all age groups. Here, enthusiastic pupils cannot wait to answer a question of the presenter. 04 A novel event of the Festival in 2015 was a screening of a documentary film at the Aero cinema followed by a iscussion and an accompanying programme. 05 Evening screening at the Aero followed by a degustation of fried insect goodies. 06 Interactive exhibition Medicine of the Future prepared by Charles University featured a workshop with a practical lesson in correct dental health habits. Film Screenings 05 06 Film screenings are a much searched-for part of the Festival programme. The 15th edition of the Festival is not an exception. Annual cooperation with Academia Film Olomouc and the Světozor cinema allows to broaden the programme with highly visual events, such as screening of popularizing documentaries. The programme of the Week of Science and Technology CAS 2015 offered three morning screenings in Prague. An innovation of the 2015 Festival was the evening screening at the Aero cinema featuring a Czech documentary called Zatajené dopisy (Concealed Letters), which attracted abundant audience. The evening programme was topped by the molecular bar from the portfolio of the project Přírodovědci.cz by the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague. Their offer to taste nibbles made from the insect was for those of the visitors who like gourmet challenges. The Prague building of the Czech Academy of Scences sheltered the screening of short films assortment varying from children’s films such as Lovci záhad (Hunters of Mysteries) up to the the series on natural sciences called Nezkreslená věda (Undistorted Science). 01 04 Programmes by the Partners of the Festival 02 Each year, the programme of the Week of Science and Technology CAS is enriched by a range of attractive events from the Festival’s partners and cooperating organizations. It is a great tradition for the ČEZ Group to participate in the Festival. In its 15th edition, the ČEZ Group opened 19 power stations and information centres to the general public and contributed with an absorbing lecture dealing with the world of energetics. The main partner of the Festival, Charles University, contributed with a gripping programme implemented in various formats. All University faculties participated in preparing lectures, Open Days or interactive exhibitions. For the 2015 Festival, a new form of lectures was created – the so called Exchange Day, where specialists from the CAS and the University respectively acted as visiting researchers or professors at the partner institution. 03 The company Bayer, s. r. o., provided a larger than lifesize model of the heart. Walking through it, the visitors had the opportunity to watch very closely how this vital organ functions. Bayer’s experts also prepared an engaging lecture on the lifecycle of a medicament and an accompanying programme at a mobile stall on the Wenceslas Square where the visitors were offered an opportunity to have their health examined for free, to discuss the results with specialists and learn how to prevent stroke. E.ON Czech Republic, s. r. o., prepared an interactive programme of E.ON Energy Truck. By means of workshops and contests for students it revealed the world of energy and its secure and effective use. In a series of lectures, E.ON also introduced the winner of E.ON Energy Globe Award 2015 – one of the most prestigious contests in the area of ecology. Specialists from Komerční banka, a.s., contributed to the topical issue of the security of the internet banking. The main media partner, Czech Television, featured an interesting workshop called Zprávičky (The Little News), in which the visitors guided by skilled professionals could experience the job of a TV host or personally meet the creators of daily news for the children’s programme called Déčko. 01 A unique model of the heart by Bayer, s. r. o., made the programme of the Festival even more attractive. 02 Medicine in Simulations or Who the doctors learn on; the students of the First Faculty of Medicine Charles University explained among other issues how to give first aid. 03, 04 Interactive programme of E.ON Energy Truck brought the world of energy closer to people. Both younger and older visitors could have a souvenir photograph made with their personal messages. 05 A unique experience of “standing in the shoes” of a TV speaker was offered at the workshop of Czech Television. 05 Visitors’ Response Eagerness and enthusiasm shown by the visitors are the best motivation to repeat the Week of Science and Technology CAS and to meliorate its content. The interest both from students and the general public can be seen in the annually increasing visit rate and in the positive feedback received in thank you e-mails or messages written in the visitor’s books. We believe that in the future editions of the Festival, we will succeed in bringing entertainment and knowledge to our regular fans and also to new generations of visitors interested in science and research. “Dear organizers, I visited some lectures and exhibitions at the Week of Science and Technology CAS. Hats off to you, because to organize all that is not simple at all. Especially RNDr. Wagner’s lecture on transuranium elements and his skills as a pedagogue are wonderful. I mention it just as an example. I myself worked in research in the past and I am glad that I can see how we keep going on in knowledge. I look forward to the next year.” Communication via the Media In the year 2015, cooperation was broadened with a number of regular media partners, such as Czech Television, Czech Radio Plus, magazine Lidé a Země (People and the Earth), science magazine Vesmír (Universe), newspaper for teachers Učitelské noviny or magazine 100+1, Živá Historie (Living History), Instinkt, Interview, Týden (The Week).
