ASSIGNMENT
round (January) – COMPETITION CATEGORY 3 – JUNIOR
1. Creativity
Choose a shout of encouragement (motto) and create a coloured flag of your team.
2. Theory and investigation
Describe briefly common kinds of telescope and their history. You can also find out pictures of some unusual old
produce of telescopes.
3. Practice and project - Telescope
If you do not mind your telescope will show upside down, you can create it very easily. You need only
two suitable lenses. Front lens (objective) should be bigger and thinner (magnify less). A lens from old
glasses (about 4 dioptres) is probably the most affordable. Back lens (eyepiece) can be smaller but
“plumper” (magnify more). You can use magnifying glass, you are able to buy it at marketplace at
affordable price.
Fit the lenses to two rolls; you should be able to telescope rolls into each other to focus. First of all you
have to find out a length of rolls. So find out the distance between the lenses. It is easy. Put the smaller
lens before your eye, move away the bigger one before it till you will see a distant object clearly. Distance
between lenses is approximately length of your telescope.
We put the objective lens at the end of the thicker and the gibbous lens at the end of the narrower part.
The lenses have to be in one line (axis) opposite each other.

If you do not mind a bigger telescope you can magnify more. Just use a thinner lens (2-3 dioptres) as an
objective.
You can watch every distant object, but be careful! Do not watch the Sun! You could hurt your sight. We
call this type of telescope Keplerian astronomic telescope.
If you do not want to see the world upside down, you have to replace the back lens (eyepiece) by a
diverging lens. This lens is thinner in the middle and thicker at the ends. The lens should have from
(minus) -10 to -15 dioptres at least; you can get it at optician. The telescope will be shorter and
magnifying of the telescope smaller. We call this type of telescope Galileo’s telescope.
