is an outstanding building functioning as a branch of the
Karlovy Vary museum. Blatenský příkop (Blatenský ditch)
is a unique structure of artificial canals, used for ore mining,
of which the biggest part of the 12 kilometers is repaired.
An instructional path Vlčí jámy (Wolf ’s pits) leads through
Horní Blatná and will lead the visitors to the ice cave where
there is snow and ice even in the hottest summer.
Cycle trails in the direct surroundings invite you to get on
a mountain bike and make pleasant trips. In winter you
can enjoy endless cross country trails or go to Pernink for
downhill skiing.
CENTRE OF R OLAVA REGION
Today, the village, with its woody landscape and clean air,
is an ideal resort for hiking, biking and skiing. The most
remarkable architectural monument is St. Jan Nepomucký’s
church. The rococo interior and the valuable organ from
the beginning of the 18th century pull the attention. To the
interesting monuments belong also the holy chapel at the
church, house Nr. 78 and a little baroque chapel in the higher
part of the village.
Horní Blatná
The picturesque mountain village and favorite winter- and
summer tourist center was founded in 1532. It reached its
prime in the 16th century. People earned their living mainly
in the forty nearby mines.
Horní Blatná is the only well-preserved Renaissance town
in West Bohemia. An 18th century craftsman house Nr. 127

Nejdek and its vicinity
Nejdek’s vicinity is an attractive recreational region
in the Ore mountains between Karlovy Vary and the
German border. It offers ideal conditions for an active
holiday. The dense net of interwoven tourist paths, bike
roads and ski-tracks will lead you through beautiful
nature to places that breathe with history, romance and
peace.
Nejdek
One of the most beautiful views into the Ore mountains valley
can be seen from the stone view tower on Tisovský hill – Pajndl
which is open for the public all year round. Many marked tourist paths lead there.
Vysoká Pec – Rudné
The village arose on the former mining area with tinning and
iron works. The first written reference about the village dates
back to 1590. It is situated on a so-called Ironstone trail leading from Bohemia to Upper Saxony. Already in the 16th century an eleven kilometers long moat and a blast-furnace were
in operation there. In the beginning of the 20th century, after
300 years, the mining was ended.
Nejdek was founded around 1250 as a mining village –when
people used to win tin. The reign of the Earls of Šlik (1446 –
1602) was an important period for Nejdek and the area along
the Rolava river. Nowadays Nejdek is an industrial town, an important recreational region and a starting point for tourism in
the Ore mountains. Among the most interesting attractions in
Nejdek belongs a castle tower that is the remains of a medieval
castle and serves as a Roman-gothic bell tower of the baroque
St. Martin’s church.
The remarkable cultural monument of the village is a house
Nr. 71 ”U Stöhrů” – a storey frame house in the Frankish style,
of which the living quarters are interconnected with a cowshed.
Such a house is very rarely found in a town architecture.
Today, Děpoltovice is mostly known as a recreational centre
at the Děpoltovice lake. There is the possibility of equestrianism (riding school) here, ride a horse or drive a horse-drawn
carriage.
The Nejdek rock was shaped by the Rolava river. The rock is
given as an example of a cubical slacking of granite and was, together with the tower, immortalized by J. W. Goethe, who drew
it in 1786 when he travelled through Nejdek.
To the other sights of interest belong a neo-gothic evangelical
church, a museum building, Nejdek’s chateau and the renowned
1500metres long Calvary. The town centre is listed as a historic
monument.
Nové Hamry
In the village there is a football field, a multipurpose area for
basketball and volleyball, a wall to practice tennis and there are
also good conditions for Nordic walking. The village’s sights
include the church ‘Navštívení panny Marie’ and a Western
town that lies in the basin of the former mine Jeroným.
An instructional path with 13 information boards takes you
around the village’s history and nature using old mining tracks.
The path is a part of the Czech –Bavarian geopark.
Děpoltovice
The village lies less than 9 kilometers to the north of Karlovy
Vary. The first written reference of the village dates back to
23. June 1273, in a deed written by Pope Gregor X which approves
Teplá cloister the ownership of granges and villages, among them
also village Tüppelsgrün, which belongs to town Hroznětín.
The village of Nové Hamry lies in a charming valley at the
confluence of the Rolava river and Bílý potok (White brook)
on the altitude of 670 – 890 m. The village was founded in the
15th century by the miners and got its name, which means
New Iron foundry, after the new Iron smelting works, built
under the Dvorský hill.
What places of interest can you see?
Nejdek – a picturesque town located in the Rolava river
valley in the Ore mountains with a roman-gothic castle
tower from the 13th century.
Jelení – in its highest prime, halfway the 19th century,
1211 people lived here. In 1900 there were 165 houses.
In the pre-war era Jelení used to be a lovely and
renowned place for summer and winter recreation.
Rolava – a former village. There stood 158 houses in
1900. After WWII, 191 houses. After the German displacement the almost depopulated village of Sauersack
got the Czech name Rolava and in 1950 the village was,
except for one.
Chaloupky – a former village. In 1900 it had 88 houses.

How to behave on a ski track
Behave in such way, that you won’t hurt or endanger
anyone.
Do not walk on the track. In case it is needed to walk
without skis, walk off the track.
You can overtake another skier on the left or on the
right or off the track. The skier who is being overtaken should give way (in a race this is imposed by
the rules)
While overtaking or being overtaken or passing,
keep your ski poles close to your body.
When going downhill adapt your ride to the conditions of the terrain, your skiing skills, state of the
track , visibility and traffic on the track. Keep a safe
distance from the skier before you.
If you meet someone in the opposite direction, pass
on the right. On single tracks the descending skier
has priority. The ascending skier is obliged to step
aside.
If you stop, step aside. If you fall down, try to leave
the track as fast as possible.

The view - tower
Pajndl
The view-tower on Tisovský
hill – Pajndl (977m) was built
in 1897 by the Nejdek Union of the Ore mountains.
The stone tower stands on a
ten-meter-high rock, the total height measures 24 meters and 111steps lead to its
top. The tower is open all
year round and offers one of
the most beautiful sceneries
– not only can you see the Ore mountains and its highest peak Klínovec but also the hills of Slavkovský forest
and when the weather is good also Šumava (the Bohemian Forest). You can reach the tower from Nejdek by
following marked tourist walking paths or from the stations Nové Hamry (station Sejfy), Tisová u Nejdku or
Nové Hamry.

Historical
landmarks
The town, its history going back to the 13th century and
where there once stood a castle, offers many interesting
places. Thanks to the cassiterite deposites, the village
was founded on mining and made the town rich. Take
a walk around the town‘s historical landmarks and immerse yourself in the days long gone.
The castle tower
One of the most remarkable
landmarks is, the old roman
– gothic tower, the remains
of the original gothic castle
built around 1250 by Konrád
Plik as a trail protection and
as a deposit of the valuables,
especially cassiterite, that
was exploited around the
Rolava river. The tower was
inhabited till 1790. Today it
functions as a belltower and
a precious bell made in 1579
by Prague bell-founder Brikcí from Cymperk is placed here.
The tower has a trapezial platform which allows us to see all
four edges from one place.
A regional museum of the Karlovy Vary
district – Nejdek branch
In the years 1976 and 1977 the Museum of the workingclass movement was founded in the bourgeois house with
neogothic decorative elements (registered national landmark). The
exposition perished after the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and made
place for an ethnical
oriented permanent exhibition from the collections of the Museum
of Karlovy Vary (folk art, pottery, glass paintings, painted
furniture). On the ground floor regular bimonthly exhibitions are held.
The baroque
church of
St. Martin
The first records of the
church of St. Martin
were found in the year
1354. Through the
next century the small
gothic building was
extended. The church was rebuilt several times, during the
years 1755 – 1756 the church was enlarged more than half
to its current size. Most of its rococo interior comes from
these years. Two side altars are noted for their rich carving
decorations. There are also other remarkable items such as
the organ in the rococo style and the renaissance tombstone
presumably picturing earl Kryštof Šlik who was burried in
the crypt in 1578.
The evangelical church
Standing on a picturesque hillock
above the Bernov pond is an architectonic dominant of the north-west
part of Nejdek. It is noticable for its
doubled pyramidal tower roof. The
lot for the neogothic church was bestowed in 1903 by the worsted spinning mill owner Carl Lahusen. The
church was completed in 1904. Today it is the domicile of the Czech
Evangelical Brothers parish.
The Nejdek chateau
Construction of the original chateau was begun by
earl Heřman Černín probably around 1650. His successor Humprecht Černín
completed the building
in 1653. For its construction a lot of stones were
used from the old Nejdek castle that had decayed during
the Thirty Years‘ War and had become uninhabitable. According to the old reports from the 18th century, the chateau used to have two stories, more than twenty rooms and
a tower with a bell and a clock. In 1786 it was rebuilt by
Earl Jan Nepomuk Hartig. On June 26, 1857 a fire broke
out in the chateau. Therefore, its present-day owner, baron
Jindřich Kleist, had the chateau rebuilt from the ground. In
1889 it was reconstructed into its present style and shape.
The Nejdek Calvary
The romantic place hidden
in the woods of Křížový vrch
(Cross hill) above Nejdek was
built in 1851-1858. Far and
near this path has never had
an equivalent for its length nor
its fabulous location just above
the town centre. Here isn‘t
such a long and beautiful landmark just above the town centre. Walks along the path have
their magic in every season. It
offers its visitors exquisit bird’s eyeviews on the historical
parts of the town and also looks far over the deep Rolava
valley.
Krušnohorský Semmering
It is the name for the mountain part of the second highest
railway in the Czech Republic leading from Karlovy Vary to
Johanngeorgenstadt in Germany (railway no. 142). On the
track from Nejdek through Nové Hamry to Pernink the train
surpasses 365 metres difference in height in 15 kilometres.
The railway was completed in 1899 and goes through the
beautiful counryside of the Ore Mountains. It offers many
far views on the Rolava river valley. On the
track (in rural district
Pernink) a technical attraction can be
found – an impressive arched stone viaduct. It is made of six
arches and at its highest point it reaches

Sports life in Nejdek
Cultural and active life
The town of Nejdek in the Ore mountains offers countless numbers of sports and recreational activities. It is
an ideal starting point for a high number of touristic and
cycling routes that will lead you to locations untouched
by civilization. In winter you can head after the beauties
of the Ore mountains along the ski tracks that are linked
with the Ore mountain artery. You will surely appreciate
the good connection to various skiing resorts that offer
wonderful conditions for skiing and snowboarding.
Cultural life in Nejdek
For those whose souls yearn for cultural self-realization,
Nejdek offers a high range of opportunities. You can visit
the town cinema, the town library with the reading room or
the photo gallery Zelená sedma (Green seven) - that allows
not only amateurs to exhibit their works.
For those, who want to discover the remote past of Nejdek
and its surroundings, can visit a permanent exhibition with
ethnic themes and also other exhibitions in this branch of
the regional museum of the Karlovy Vary district. And very
demanding visitors we invite to regular classical music
concerts that are organized by the local “Friend’s of music”
association.
The town of Nejdek organizes many traditional cultural
events. Every year in June a Fair ‚Good Will’ is held
which rich programme attracts many visitors. Around
Advent, carried on the sound of Christmas Carrols,
a yearly Christmas fair changes the open space in front
of St. Martin’s church into a historical market scenting
of mead and mulled wine.
Your children will appreciate a visit in Babiččin dvoreček
(grandma’s yard) in Smolné Pece where you can see many
domestic animals. You can hire a baby-sitter in the family
center Zvoneček (Little Bell) or you can participate in many
of its interesting activities.
Nejdek and its vicinity has
many marked tourist paths
and forest ways that will
lead you to the local attractions. The hilly countryside
is suitable for hiking, Nordic
walking, or riding mountainand racing bikes. If you like
swimming, sunbathing or
squelching in water there are
many water reservoirs and
natural open-air pools (Lesík,
Přebuz, Tatrovice, Šindelová,
Děpoltovice, Nová Role) and
there are also indoor swimming pools in Nové Hamry
and Potůčky.
