jarní dny pomalu odeznívají a s pravým létem opět vstupujeme do té hlavní sezóny, kdy Karlovy Vary praskají ve
švech jak pod tíhou zájmu návštěvníků, tak pod množstvím kulturních a společenských akcí. Letošní sezóna je
navíc unikátní tím, že Karlovy Vary slaví 650 let od svého založení. Ať přijedete kdykoli, budete mít vždy šanci
navštívit některé z programů, které toto významné výročí

die Frühlingstage sind langsam vorbei und mit dem richtigen Sommer treten
wir wieder in die Hauptsaison, wo Karlsbad in allen Nähten platzt, sowohl
unter dem Interesse der Besucher, als auch unter der Anzahl an kulturellen
und gesellschaftlichen Veranstaltungen. Diesjährige Saison ist dazu einmalig,
weil Karlsbad 650 Jahre von seiner Gründung feiert. Egal wann Sie kommen,
Sie werden immer die Chance haben, ein der Programme zu besuchen, die
dieses bedeutende Jubiläum und seine Feierlichkeiten begleiten. Die Übersicht
der bedeutendsten finden Sie auch auf den folgenden Seiten unserer
Zeitschrift. Falls Sie sich aus Karlsbad ein originelles Geschenk auf den
Aufenthalt im Weltkurort mitbringen wollen, sollte es bestimmt ein Kurbecher
sein. Gerade der Becher Viktor, dessen einmalige und mit der Anzahl begrenz

Dear guests of the Grandhotel Pupp,
Spring days are almost over and the coming summer has brought the main season when Karlovy Vary bursts at its seams owing to the interest of its visitors
and the huge number of cultural and social events. And what is more, this year‘s
season is unique as Karlovy Vary is celebrating its 650th foundation anniversary.
No matter when you come, you will always have an opportunity to go to see
some of the programmes accompanying this important anniversary and its celebrations. You can find a survey of the most important of them on the following
pages of our magazine. If you want to remember your stay in the world-famous
spa town and leave it with an original souvenir, it must definitely be a spa cup.
The unique spa cup Viktor, which was made in a limited series, is available at
the reception of the Grandhotel Pupp. It can be the right souvenir which will
always bring back nice memories. I wish you a beautiful summer stay in Karlovy
Vary which you will not forget either with the spa cup or without it.

Evropské setkání šlechty
Zahájení lázeňské sezony
Potkat v Karlových Varech barony, hraběnky či
knížata nebyl v průběhu tradičního jarního setkání šlechty problém. Nechyběl ani historický průvod nejen šlechticů, ale i konšelů a pacholků.
Dvanácté setkání vyvrcholilo ve Slavnostním sále
Grandhotelu Pupp Jarním plesem, jehož se zúčastnilo na 600 aristokratů z celé Evropy, nejvíce pak
z Německa a Švédska.
Karlovy Vary slaví v tomto roce 650. výročí svého vzniku. Oslavy probíhají po celý rok, jejich
hlavní část se však odehrála první květnový týden
u příležitosti zahájení nové lázeňské sezóny. Do
města opět zavítal Karel IV. se svou družinou,
papežský nuncius vysvětil karlovarské prameny
a město bylo svědkem řady kulturních akcí i ohňo
stroje. Závěrečný večer města se konal v Slavnost
ním sále Grandhotelu Pupp.

Bál Harmonie popatnácté
Ples zdravotně postižených, jehož podporovatelem
je i Grandhotel Pupp, je již tradičně hodnocen jako
jeden z nejkrásnějších plesů sezóny. Kromě uvolněné a zábavou nabité atmosféry také proto, že umožňuje dobře se pobavit i lidem, kteří díky svým hendikepům potřebují co nejvíce sociálních a společenských kontaktů. Na tomto jubiljením patnáctém bále
se výborně bavilo na sedm set lidí z celé republiky.

Adelfrühlingstreffens Freiherren, Gräfinnen oder
Fürsten zu treffen. Es gab nicht nur einen histori
schen Umzug des Adels, sondern auch der Schöffe
und Knechte. Im Festsaal von Grandhotel Pupp
kulminierte das zwölfte Treffen mit einem
Frühlingsball, an dem 600 Aristokraten aus ganz
Europa teilnahmen, meistens aus Deutschland
und Schweden.
Beginn der Kursaison
Karlsbad feiert in diesem Jahr das 650. Jubiläum
seiner Gründung. Die Feierlichkeiten verlaufen das
ganze Jahr, aber der Hauptteil spielte sich in der
ersten Maiwoche ab, bei der Gelegenheit der
Eröffnung einer neuen Kursaison. In die Stadt kehr
te wieder Karl IV. mit seiner Gruppe ein, der
Nuntius weihte die Karlsbader Heilquellen und die
Stadt war Zeuge vieler kulturellen Veranstaltungen
und eines Feuerwerks. Der Abschlussabend verlief
im Festsaal von Grandhotel Pupp.
Der Ball Harmonie zum fünfzehnten Mal
Ball der Körperbehinderten, dessen Unterstützer
auch das Grandhotel Pupp ist, wird schon traditionell als einer der schönsten Bälle der Saison
gewertet. Außer der lockeren und mit Spaß gefüllten Stimmung auch deswegen, weil es auch eine
gute Unterhaltung für die Leute ist, die wegen ihrer
Behinderung möglichst viele soziale und gesell
schaftliche Kontakte brauchen. Auf diesen fünfzehnten Jubiläumsball amüsierten sich prächtig an
die siebenhundert Leute aus der ganzen Republik.

The ball of the disabled, whose supporter is the
Grandhotel Pupp, too, is traditionally appreciated
as one of the most beautiful balls of the season.
Apart from its relaxed atmosphere filled with entertainment it is also because it also offers entertainment to people who need as many social contacts
as possible owing to their handicaps. About seven
hundred people from the whole republic had
a wonderful time at this anniversary fifteenth ball.
It was no problem to meet barons, countesses or
princes during the traditional spring meeting of
aristocrats in Karlovy Vary. There was a historical
procession of not only aristocrats but also of councillors and stable boys, too. The twelfth meeting
culminated in the Festive Hall of the Grandhotel
Pupp at the Spring Ball in which almost 600 aristocrats took part. They came from all Europe,
especially from Germany and Sweden.
Karlovy Vary is celebrating its 650th foundation

on the occasion of the opening of the new spa
season during the first week in May. Charles IV
and his retinue paid a visit to the town again and
the papal nuncio consecrated Karlovy Vary mineral springs. The town witnessed a number of cultural events as well as fireworks. The final evening
of the town was held in the Festive Hall of the
Grandhotel Pupp.

A non-profit-making company whose aim is to rank
Karlovy Vary as one of the prestigious destinations
where MICE (Meetings, Incensitives, Conferences,
Exhibitions) are held has recently been established.
The Grandhotel Pupp has been its leader and most
active member from the very beginning. Its activities include presentations of the town as an important congress destination and organizing, production and full realization of MICE events.

Club Malá dvorana je prostorem s jedinečnou atmosférou 19. století. Přirozeně navazuje na lobby
Grandhotelu Pupp a můžete jím také projít do
některé z dalších restaurací. Nezastavit se zde alespoň na čaj by však bylo minimálně nešťastné,
spíše však hříchem. Mezi 11. a 23. hodinou si zde
můžete dát třeba jen kávu, nebo si dopřát některou z nabízených gurmánských specialit. Club
Malá dvorana je mezi hosty Grandhotelu Pupp
oblíben nejen pro svého neopakovatelného genia
loci. Atmosféru Malé dvorany tvoří, pravda, nádherný interiér, ale důležitý lidský rozměr dostává
díky příjemné a profesionální obsluze. Díky vedoucímu restaurace panu Hejcmanovi, jehož 30
leté zkušenosti jsou ohromující, se do Malé dvorany každý rád vrací. Obsluhoval prezidenty, hvězdy filmového plátna, politiky z celého světa.
Zeptáte-li se ho na nějakou kuriozitu ze setkání,
jen se usměje a odpoví: „Všichni byli vždy velmi
příjemní, slušní, v pohodě.“ Je hned vidět, že je to
šlechtic mezi číšníky. Ctí anonymitu a právo hostů
na soukromí. Zná své řemeslo do posledního detailu a číšníkem je rád.

Atmosphäre des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er schließt natürlich an die Lobby von Grandhotel Pupp an und
man kann durch ihn auch in ein weiteres
Restaurant gehen. Sich hier wenigstens zum Tee
nicht aufhalten, wäre bestenfalls unglücklich, eher
aber eine Sünde. Zwischen 11 und 23 Uhr kann
man hier zum Beispiel nur Kaffee trinken, oder
sich eine von den gebotenen Gourmetspezialitäten
gönnen. Club Malá dvorana ist unter den Gästen
von Grandhotel Pupp nicht nur für sein unwiederholbaren Genius loci beliebt. Die Atmosphäre von
Malá dvorana bildet, das stimmt, das wunderschöne Interieur, aber die wichtige, menschliche
Dimension bekommt er dank angenehmer und
professioneller Bedienung. Dank dem Restaurant
chef Herrn Hejcman, dessen 30-jährige Erfahrun
gen bewältigend sind, kommt jeder nach Malá
dvorana gern zurück. Er bediente Präsidenten,
Stars der Filmleinwand, Politiker aus der ganzen
Welt. Falls man ihn auf eine Kuriosität der Treffen
fragt, lächelt er nur und antwortet: „Alle waren
immer sehr angenehm, anständig und ok.“ Man

continuation of the lobby of the Grandhotel Pupp
and you can go through it when you want to visit
some of other restaurants. However, it would be
a mistake if not a sin not to stop here, at least for
a cup of tea. You might order just a cup of coffee
or some of the gourmand specialties which are
offered here between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. The
Club Malá dvorana is popular with the guests of
the Grandhotel Pupp not only because of its unique genius loci. It is true that the atmosphere of
the Malá dvorana Club is created by the beautiful
interior; however, it is pleasant and professional
service that gives it an important human dimen
sion. Everyone likes coming back to the Club
Malá dvorana thanks to the manager of the restaurant Mr. Hejcman whose 30-year-long experience
is astonishing. He has served presidents, film stars
and politicians from the whole world. If you ask
him about some curiosity from some of the meetings, he only smiles and says: “Everyone has
always been very pleasant and decent, just fine.“
You can immediately see that he is an aristocrat
among waiters. He respects the anonymity of guests
and their right to privacy. He knows his profession
down to the last detail and he likes being a waiter.
If you have a free while, have one of special
cocktails mixed or just enjoy the atmosphere of
the Malá dvorana over a cup of tasty Ronnefeldt
tea. You cannot fail to see Mr. Hejcman – a man
of a big spirit and stature.

Falls aber mit dem Housekeeping im Hotel ein Problem ist,
fliegt diese Tatsache in die Welt noch hundertmal schneller. Houskeeping hat wesentlichen Einfluss auf die
Zufriedenheit des Gastes und auf den Gesamteindruck von
seinem Aufenthalt im Hotel.
Grandhotel Pupp hat das Glück, dass die Housekeeping
Abteilung bereits das dreizehnte Jahr eine der Stützen des
gesamten Managerteams Hana Huberová führt. Gebürtige
Karlsbaderin wirkt im Hotelmilieu bereits vom Studium.
Im Grandhotel Pupp ist s ie seit dem Jahre 1994 tätig. Sie
leitet an die zwanzig Zimmermädchen so, dass alle 228
Zimmer im Grandhotel Pupp vor Sauberkeit glänzen, dass sie

The standard of housekeeping is the alpha and omega of
the good reputation of each hotel. If this section is managed well, the positive information spreads fast among
guests. However, if there is a problem with housekeeping
in a hotel, the negative experience spreads a hundred times
faster – like a wildfire. Housekeeping can essentially influence the guests' satisfaction and his general impression
from his stay in a hotel. The Grandhotel Pupp is lucky to
have Hana Huberová, one of the supports of the whole
managing team. She has already been leading the housekeeping section for 13 years. A native of Karlovy Vary has
been working in hotels since her studies. She has been
working in the Grandhotel Pupp since 1994. She is responsible for twenty chambermaids making them clean all 228
rooms of the Grandhotel Pupp perfectly, which preserves
the unique and pleasant atmosphere, and checks if all
services connected with this activity are of top quality. She

Golfová hřiště v Karlovarském kraji jsou spjata
s významnou minulostí a tradicemi golfového

Předchůdcem hřiště v Olšových Vratech bylo devítijamkové hřiště v Gejzírparku. To však přestalo
stačit kapacitou, a proto se v místech dnešního
Golf Resortu započalo se stavbou nového, osmnáctijamkového hřiště. Vypracováním projektu
byl pověřen slavný francouzský architekt
C. Noskowski. Stavba byla dokončena v r. 1935.
V průběhu války hřiště zarostlo křovím, proto se
první poválečný turnaj konal na zrenovovaném
hřišti až v roce 1949. Socialistickou éru hřiště
s obtížemi přežilo, aby zde po roce 1989 nastal
prudký rozvoj a postupnou celkovou modernizací
se hřiště zařadilo mezi renomované evropské golfové areály.
Dnešní resort nabízí kromě 18 jamek v nádherné

scenérii mnohem více: Golfrestaurant s terasou,
která má panoramatický výhled na hřiště. Bar
„Jamka č. 19“, terasa s občerstvením na 9. jamce,

Golf Resort Karlsbad
Golfplätze im der Karlsbader Region sind mit bedeutender Geschichte und Traditionen des
Golfsports verbunden, aber zugleich bieten sie das

Vorgänger des Golfplatzes in Olšová Vrata war
das Neunlochspielfeld im Geysirpark. Dies reichte
aber mit der Kapazität nicht mehr aus, und des
halb begann man an der Stelle des heutigen Golf
Resortes mit dem Bau eines neuen, Achtzehn
lochspielfeldes. Mit der Ausarbeitung wurde der
berühmte französische Architekt C. Noskowski
beauftragt. Der Bau wurde im Jahre 1935 beendet. Während des Krieges verwuchs der Platz mit
Sträuchern, deshalb fand das erste Nachkriegs
turnier am wiederhergestellten Platz erst im Jahre
1949 statt. Die Ära des Sozialismus überlebte der
Golfplatz mit Schwierigkeiten. Nach dem Jahre
1989 begann hier schneller Aufschwung und mit
fortschreitender gesamter Modernisierung reihte
sich der Platz zu den renommierten europäischen
Golfgeländen.

Golf courses in the Karlovy Vary region are connected with the important past and traditions of
golf sport but, at the same time, they provide the
most modern background and offer the most plea
sant relaxation in beautiful scenery.
The predecessor of the golf course in Olšová
Vrata was a nine-hole golf course in the Gejzírpark.
However, it did not have sufficient capacity and
so a new, eighteen-hole golf course started being
built on the site of the present Golf Resort. The
famous French architect C. Noskowski was charged to prepare building plans. The golf course
was completed in 1935. It overgrew with bushes
during the war and that was why that it was only
in 1949 that the first tournament was held in the
renovated golf course. It survived the period of
socialism with difficulties, however, after 1989

Něco málo z historie
Ein bisschen Geschichte | A Bit of History
Vývoj Grandhotelu Pupp se může pochlubit více než
třísetletou historií, během které se hotel stal jedním ze
symbolů Karlových Varů. Kde tedy hledat počátky
mezinárodního věhlasu, kterým se Grandhotel Pupp
může pochlubit? První stavbou na místě nynějšího hotelového komplexu byl Saský sál, postavený tehdejším
starostou města Deimlem v roce 1701. Sál byl původně
pojmenován Salle de lÁssemblée. Na přijetí pozdějšího názvu měl vliv fakt, že spoluinvestorem stavby byl
saský kurfiřt a polský král August Silný II. Jiný karlovarský starosta, Andreas Becher, stál za stavbou blízkého,
avšak konkurenčního Českého sálu. Potomci starosty
Deimla si na svých pozemcích před Českým sálem postavili dům Boží oko, třetí pilíř budoucího hotelového
celku. Své nynější jméno nese Grandhotel po Johannovi
Georgovi Puppovi, cukráři, jenž se přiženil do vlivné
karlovarské rodiny Mitterbachů. Pupp koupil postupně
v letech 1775-85 od Becherů Český sál, od základů ho
přestavěl a zvětšil. Snažil se také koupit, nebo alespoň
pronajmout i Saský sál, to se mu však nepodařilo.
Povedlo se to až jeho pravnukům, Antonovi, Juliovi

lissement Pupp a zahrnoval především prostory
Českého sálu, Cafésalonu a k němu přilehlému
Billiardsalonu. Saský sál koupili bratři až v roce 1890.
Pátá generace Puppů započala rozsáhlé rekonstrukce.
Skoupili zbytek okolních pozemků, staré budovy dali
zbourat a zcela přestavět. Přestavbu vedli osvědčení vídeňští architekti Ferdinad Fellner a Hermann Helmer.
Grandhotel tak získal podobu, jakou známe dnes.

Saal wurde ursprünglich Salle de lÁssemblée genannt. Seine spätere Benennung beeinflusste, dass
der Mitinvestor der sächsische Kurfürst und polnische König August II. der Starke war. Ein anderer
Karlsbader Bürgermeister, Andreas Becher, ver
ursachte den Bau des in der Nähe liegenden, aber
konkurrierenden Böhmischen Saales. Die Nach
kommen vom Bürgermeister Deiml haben auf ihren
Grundstücken vor dem Böhmischen Saal das Haus
Gottes Auge gebaut, die dritte Säule des zukünftigen
Hotelkomplexes. Seinen jetzigen Namen trägt das
Grandhotel nach Johann Georg Pupp, einem
Zuckerbäcker, der sich in die einflussreiche Karls
bader Familie Mitterbach einheiratete. Pupp kaufte

the symbols of Karlovy Vary. And where to look for the
origins of the international fame the Grandhotel Pupp
can boast? The first building in the place of the present
hotel complex was the Saxon Hall whose construction
had been initiated by Mayor Deiml in 1701. The hall
was originally called Salle de lÁssemblée. Later it was
renamed as one of its co-investors was the Saxon elector and Polish king August the Strong II. Another mayor
of Karlovy Vary, Andreas Becher, initiated the construction of the nearby Bohemian Hall, a rival of the Saxon
Hall. Mayor Deiml´s descendants built the God's Eye
House, the third pillar of the future hotel complex, on
their grounds in front of the Bohemian Hall. It has got
nach und nach in den Jahren 1775-85 von Familie
Becher den Böhmischen Saal, von Grundrissen hat
er ihn umgebaut und vergrößert. Er bemühte sich
auch den Sächsischen Saal zu kaufen, oder wenigstens zu mieten, dies gelang ihm aber nicht. Es gelang erst seinen Urenkeln, Anton, Julius und Hein
rich Pupp. Diese drei Brüder gründeten im Jahre
1872 eine gemeinsame Firma Pupp, die für den
größten Aufschwung vom Hotelkomplex sorgte.
Dieser hieß damals Etablissement Pupp und umfasste vor allem die Räumlichkeiten des Böhmischen
Saals, den Cafésalon und den anliegenden Billard
salon. Den Sächsischen Saal kauften die Brüder
erst im Jahre 1890. Die fünfte Generation Pupp
begann mit umfangreicher Rekonstruktion. Sie
kauften die übrigen umliegenden Grundstücke, die
alten Gebäude ließen sie niederreißen und bauten
sie völlig um. Den Umbau führten die anerkannten
Wiener Architekten Ferdinand Fellner und Hermann
Helmer. Das Grandhotel bekam somit das Aussehen,
das wir heute kennen.

ner who married into the influential Mitterbach family
from Karlovy Vary. Between 1775 and 1785 Pupp
bought the Bohemian Hall from the Becher family part
after part, rebuilt it from its very foundations and extended it. He tried, too, to buy or at least to hire the Saxon
Hall; however, he was not successful. Only his greatgrandsons Anton, Julius and Heinrich Pupp managed to
do it. In 1872 the three brothers founded a firm Pupp
together which played an important part in the later rise
of the hotel complex. At that time it was called
Etablissement Pupp and included first of all the
Bohemian Hall, Cafésalon and the adjacent Billiardsalon.
It was only in 1890 that the brothers bought the Saxon
Hall. The fifth generation of the Pupps started an extensive renovation. They bought the remaining grounds in
the neighbourhood, had the buildings pulled down and
completely rebuilt. The renovation was lead by expe
rienced Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and
Hermann Helmer. In those days the Grandhotel Pupp
got the appearance which we know today.

AUF DEN SPUREN DER PROMINENTEN | IN FAMOUS PEOPLE’S FOOTSTEPS

Karlovy Vary se mohly těšit z návštěvy tohoto fenomenálního hudebního skladatele dvakrát. V roce 1812 se zde zdržel 10 dní mezi lázeňskými pobyty v Teplicích a Františkových Lázních. Důvo
dem jeho návštěvy nebyla léčba ani vystoupení,
spekuluje se spíše o obchodních jednáních, konzultacích s jeho osobním lékařem dr. Stauden
heimerem anebo dokonce o setkání s Mistrovou
milou Amálií Sebaldovou. Beethoven se ubytoval
v domě Boží oko, součásti Grandhotelu Pupp
v místě dnešního Café Pupp. Poté, co se roznesla
zpráva o požáru lázní Baden u Vídně, rozhodl se
Ludwig van Beethoven uspořádat dobročinný
koncert. Spolu s italským houslistou Giovannim
Batistou Polledrem vystoupili 6. srpna 1812 před
plně obsazeným Českým sálem, předchůdcem
dnešního Slavnostního sálu. Existují svědectví
o vynikající umělecké úrovni tohoto koncertu, byť
malý výnos z dobrovolného vstupného Mistra
velmi zklamal. Den po koncertu odjel Beethoven
na další léčení do Františkových Lázní. Do
Karlových Varů se však ještě týž rok na podzim
vrátil. Tehdy zde došlo k památnému a zároveň
poslednímu setkání s básníkem Johanem Wolfgan
gem Goethem.
Přestože po roce 1812 Beethoven do Karlových
Varů již nepřijel, nechal tu svou stopu navěky.
Kavárnu Grandhotelu Pupp zdobí pamětní deska
připomínající Mistra a jeden z hotelových salónků
nese jeho jméno. V parku nedaleko Grandhotelu
Pupp proti proudu říčky Teplé stojí impozantní
pomník Ludwiga van Beethovena od sochaře Huga
Uhera z roku 1929 a jméno slavného skladatele
nese i jedna z promenád v lázeňských lesích.

Karlsbad konnte sich am Besuch dieses phänomenalen Musikkomponisten zweimal erfreuen. Im
Jahre 1812 hielt er sich hier 10 Tage zwischen den
Kuraufenthalten in Teplitz und Franzensbad auf.
Grund seines Besuches war weder die Kur noch
ein Auftritt, man vermutet eher Geschäftsverhand
lungen, Besprechungen mit seinem Hausarzt Dr.
Staudenheimer oder sogar ein Treffen mit Meisters
Liebe Amalia Sebald. Beethoven wohnte im Hau
se Gottes Auge, einem Teil von Grandhotel Pupp
in der Stelle des heutigen Café Pupp. Nachdem
sich die Nachricht über den Brand vom Heilbad
Baden bei Wien verbreitete, entschloss sich
Ludwig van Beethoven ein Benefizkonzert zu ver
anstalten. Gemeinsam mit dem italienischen
Geigenspieler Giovanni Batista Polledro tritt er
am 6. August 1812 vor dem voll besetzten
Böhmischen Saal, dem Vorgänger des heutigen
Festsaals, auf. Es gibt Zeugnisse über das ausgezeichnete künstlerische Niveau dieses Konzertes,
obwohl der geringe Gewinn vom freiwilligen
Eintritt den Meister sehr enttäuschte. Einen Tag
nach dem Konzert fuhr Beethoven zur weiteren
Kur nach Franzensbad. Nach Karlsbad kam er
aber noch das gleiche Jahr im Herbst zurück.
Damals kam es zu dem denkwürdigen und zu
gleich letzten Treffen mit dem Dichter Johann
Wolfgang Goethe.
Obwohl Beethoven nach dem Jahre 1812 nach
Karlsbad bereits nicht kam, hinterließ er hier seine
Spuren für immer. Das Café von Grandhotel Pupp
schmückt eine Gedenktafel, die an den Meister
erinnert, und einer der Hotelsalons trägt seinen
Namen. Im Park ein Stück von Grandhotel Pupp
Strom aufwärts des Flusses Tepl steht das imposante Denkmal von Ludwig van Beethoven von
Bildhauer Hugo Uher aus dem Jahre 1929 und
den Namen des berühmten Komponisten trägt
auch eine der Promenaden in den Kurwäldern.

A Musical Genius
Karlovy Vary could enjoy the visit of this phenomenal composer twice. In 1812 he spent here 10
days between his spa stays in Teplice and
Františkovy Lázně. The reason for his visit was

neither spa treatment nor a concert; it is speculated on some transactions of business, consulta
tions with his personal doctor Dr. Staudenheimer
or even on the date with his friend Amalia Sebald.
Beethoven stayed in the house God‘s Eye (Boží
oko), a part of the Grandhotel Pupp where the
Café Pupp is today. When the news about the fire
in the spa town Baden near Vienna spread,
Beethoven decided to organize a charity concert.
He and the Italian violinist Giovanni Batista
Polledro played in the crowded Bohemian Hall,
the forerunner of the present Festive Hall, on the
6th August 1812. There is a testimony of excellent
standards of this concert; however, the Master
was very disappointed by the small amount of
money gained from the voluntary entrance fee.
A day after the concert Beethoven left for
Františkovy Lázně to take another cure. Yet he
returned to Karlovy Vary in the autumn of the
same year. On that occasion he met here the poet
Johann Wolfgang Goethe for the last time.
Though Beethoven never came to Karlovy Vary
after the year 1812 again, he left his mark here
forever. The café of the Grandhotel Pupp is decorated with a plaque commemorating the Master
and one of the hotel lounges has been named after
him. The imposing Monument to Ludwig van
Beethoven stands in a park near the Grandhotel
Pupp upstream the Teplá River. It was made by
the sculptor Hugo Uher in 1929. One of the
promenades in the spa woods, too, has been
named after the famous composer.

Schloss und Schlossbrauerei Chyše
Nejstarší historické zprávy o Chyších pocházejí z druhé
poloviny 12. století. V průběhu staletí měnilo panství
často majitele, byl přistavěn karmelitánský klášter a kostel, zámek byl upraven do barokní podoby. Panství získal
v roce 1766 rod Lažanských. Lažanští sídlo vlastnili až do
roku 1945, kdy bylo zestátněno. Objekt chátral až do
roku 1996, kdy jej od státu koupili vzdálení potomci rodu původních vlastníků, manželé Lažanští. Ti od té doby
zámek postupně za velkého organizačního a finančního
vypětí opravují. Návštěvníkům jsou již přístupny krásně
zrekonstruované historické interiéry, středověká sklepení
a bašta, zámecká expozice i nádherný park.
Majitel chyšského zámku Vladimír Lažanský koupil
v roce 2003 i budovu pivovaru, jehož původ sahá do
roku 1587. Provozován byl nepřetržitě do roku 1932,
pak využíván jako sýpka a posledních třicet let těžce
zkoušel, když sloužil jako kotelna. Díky novému majiteli prošel zámecký pivovar rekonstrukcí a v roce 2006
byla v Chyši po 74 letech obnovena tradice vaření piva.
Sehnat dobrého sládka byl podle slov zámeckého pána
obtížný úkol. Zájem o pivo, které po prvním majiteli
chyšského panství dostalo jméno Prokop, dokazuje, že
výběr byl úspěšný.
Naplánujte si výlet do renesančního zámku, projděte se
parkem a návštěvu zakončete v pivovaru. Otevřeno tu
mají denně od 11 hodin a natočí vám světlou jedenáctku
a tmavou i světlou dvanáctku. Tak v Chyši na zdraví!

Die älteste historische Erwähnung über Chyše stammt
aus der zweiten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts. Im Laufe
der Jahrhunderte wechselte die Herrschaft oft den
Besitzer, es wurde ein Karmeliter Kloster und eine
Kirche dazugebaut, das Schloss wurde im Barockstil
umgebaut. Die Herrschaft bekam im Jahre 1766 das
Adelsgeschlecht Lažanský. Diese Familie besaß das
Schloss bis 1945, als es vom Staat enteignet wurde. Der
Sitz verfiel bis ins Jahr 1996, als ihn vom Staat die
Nachkommen des Geschlechts der ehemaligen
Eigentümer, das Ehepaar Lažanský kaufte. Seitdem reparieren sie das Schloss nach und nach unter großer
organisatorischer und finanzieller Belastung. Den
Besuchern sind bereits die schön hergerichteten historischen Interieure, die mittelalterlichen Keller und die
Bastei, die Schlossausstellung, sowie der wunderschöne Park zugänglich.
Der Eigentümer des Schlosses Chyše Vladimír Lažanský
kaufte im Jahre 2003 auch das Brauereigebäude, dessen Ursprung ins Jahr 1587 geht. In Betrieb war es
ununterbrochen bis 1932, dann genutzt als Speicher
und letzte dreißig Jahre war es stark geprobt, es diente
als Heizhaus. Dank des neuen Eigentümers wurde die
Schlossbrauerei wiederherstellt und im Jahre 2006
wurde in Chyše nach 74 Jahren die Bierbrautradition
erneuert. Einen guten Bierbrauer zu finden, war laut
Worten des Schlossherrn eine schwierige Aufgabe.
Interesse um das Bier, das den Namen Prokop nach
dem ersten Besitzer der Herrschaft Chyše bekam,
beweist, dass die Auswahl erfolgreich war.
Planen Sie einen Ausflug in das Renaissanceschloss,
gehen Sie durch den Park und beenden Sie den Besuch
in der Brauerei. Geöffnet ist hier täglich ab 11 Uhr und
man schenkt Ihnen ein helles Elf Grad und dunkles

The Chateau and Brewery in Chyše
Chyše was first recorded in the second half of the 12th
century. In the course of the century the owners of the
estate changed, a Carmelite church and cloister were added on it and later the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque
style. In 1766 the noble family of Lažanský won the es
tate. The Lažanský family was the owner of the seat until
1945 when it was nationalized. The seat dilapidated until
1996 when distant descendants of the original owners,
Mr. and Mrs. Lažanský, bought it from the state. Since
that time they have been repairing the castle step by step
which requires organizational skills and lots of money.
Beautifully renovated historic interiors, medieval cellars
and a bastion, the exhibition in the chateau and a wonderful park have already been opened to the public.
In 2003 the owner of the chateau Vladimír Lažanský
bought the building of the brewery too. Its history goes
back to the year 1587. It was continuously in operation
until 1932, and then it was used as a granary and was
tried hard in the last thirty years when it was used as
a boiler house.
Thanks to the new owner the brewery was renovated
and in 2006 the tradition of beer brewing was revived
in Chyše after 74 years. The owner of the chateau said
that finding a good brewer had been a really difficult
task. However, the interest in the beer, which was named
Prokop after the first owner of the estate of Chyše,
shows that the choice was successful.
Make a trip and visit the Renaissance castle, walk
through the park and finish your visit in the brewery. It
is open daily from 11 a.m. and they will serve you here
a glass of eleven-degree light ale or of twelve-degree
light or brown ale. So – chin-chin in Chyše!
By car: Road E48 in the direction of Prague, turn right
after 34 km and take road 194 to Chyše, 40 km.
By bus: From the bus station several times a day. You
have to change in Žlutice.

MLÝNSKÝ PRAMEN - pramen č. 6
Pramen byl pojmenován podle mlýna, který stával poblíž až do konce 18. století. Nad pramenní
vázou je mramorová deska s původním latinským
textem „Ódy na Vřídlo“ od českého humanisty
Bohuslava Hasištejnského z roku 1500.
Pramen samotný byl znám již v 16. století a byl se
zvláštní oblibou používán ke koupelím. V r. 1705
jej doporučil známý karlovarský lékař F. Hoffmann
k pitné kúře. Zde byly také brzy nato zřízeny lázně
s pěti kabinami, z dnešního hlediska první balneo
provoz v Karlových Varech vůbec. Dějiny tohoto
místa jsou úzce spjaty se jménem císařovny Marie
Terezie. Ta, aby pomohla těžce zkoušenému městu (postihl jej v r. 1759 veliký požár), vykoupila
přilehlý pozemek a nechala zde postavit nákladem
23.000 zlatých nové Mlýnské lázně. Po čtrnácti
letech je městu darovala. Tehdy byl také nově zachycen Mlýnský pramen, jehož vydatnost však trvale klesala. Potíže nastaly zejména při výstavbě
nové Mlýnské kolonády.
Až do r. 1908 byla pramenní váza Mlýnského
pramene pod úrovní podlahy kolonády a k prameni se sestupovalo po třech schodech. Průzkumné
vrty poblíž Mlýnského pramene prokázaly, že
v puklinovém systému žulového masivu pod tímto místem přesahuje teplota termy 70°C. Pak již
zbývalo jen zachytit tento pramen dostatečně hluboko, aby se zabránilo vnikání povrchového znečištění, ale také tak, aby výsledná teplota nebyla
příliš vysoká. Jímací vrt Mlýnského pramene je 24
metrů hluboký.
O oblibě Mlýnského pramene svědčily vždy dlouhé fronty pacientů v době ranní pitné kúry. Své
udělala i reklama - vždyť Mlýnský pramen byl
dříve plněn do lahví a jako léčivá voda k dostání
prakticky v celé zemi.

Er wurde nach der Mühle genannt, die bis zum
Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts in der Nähe stand.
Über der Trinkvase ist eine Marmortafel mit dem
ursprünglichen lateinischen Text der „Ode auf
den Sprudel“ vom tschechischen Humanisten
Bohuslav Hasištejnský aus dem Jahre 1500.
Die Quelle selbst war schon im 16. Jahrhundert bekannt, man benutzte sie besonders zu Bädern. Im
Jahre 1705 empfahl sie der bekannte Arzt F. Hoffmann
aus Karlsbad zur Trinkkur. Bald wurde hier auch eine
Badeanstalt mit fünf Badezellen errichtet. Vom heutigen Gesichtspunkt handelte es sich eigentlich um die
erste Badeanstalt in Karlsbad. Die Historie dieses
Platzes ist mit dem Namen der Kaiserin Maria
Theresia eng verbunden. Um der schwer geprüften
Stadt zu helfen (im Jahre 1759 wurde sie vom grossen
Brand betroffen), kaufte sie das anliegende Grundstück
und liess hier das sog. Mühlbrunnbad erbauen (die
Kosten betrugen 23.000 Gulden). Nach 14 Jahren
schenkte sie das Bad der Stadt. Damals wurde auch
die Mühlbrunnquelle neu gefasst, weil ihre Ergiebigkeit
ständig sank. Probleme erschienen vor allem bei dem
Aufbau der neuen Mühlbrunnkolonnade - bis zum
Jahre 1908 befand sich die Quellvase der Mühlbrunn
quelle unter dem Niveau der Kolonnade. Man musste
drei Stufen hinabsteigen, um die Quelle zu erreichen.
Sondierungsbohrungen in der Nähe der Mühlbrunn
quelle zeigten, dass die Temperatur des Therma
wassers in den Rissen im Granitmassiv unter dieser
Stelle höher als 70°C war. Man brauchte dann nur
die Quelle tief genug zu fassen, um ihre Verunreini
gung zu vermeiden. Die Temperatur sollte auch
nicht zu hoch sein. Heute ist die Bohrung 24 m tief.
Die Beliebtheit der Mühlbrunnquelle bewiesen
auch die langen Schlangen von Patienten - besonders morgens, in der Zeit der Trinkkur. Auch die
Werbung spielte eine wichtige Rolle. Früher wurden mit der Mühlbrunnquelle Flaschen abgefüllt
und man konnte das Mineralwasser praktisch im
ganzen Land bekommen.
It was named after the mill which used to stand in
the neighbourhood till the end of the 18th century. A marble plate with the original Latin text of

The spring gave the name to the biggest colonnade
in Karlovy Vary.
The spring was known in as early as the 16th
century and it was used especially for baths. In
1705 the famous Karlovy Vary doctor F. Hoffmann
recommended it for the drinking cure. A spa facility with five boxes was established here soon
after it. From the present point of view it was the
first balneologic facility in Karlovy Vary. The
history of the place is closely connected with the
name of Kaiserin Maria Theresa. In order to help
the town (it was badly hit by fire in 1759), she
bought a piece of land in the neighbourhood and
ordered a new spa house to be built here. Its
name was the Mill Spa House and it cost 23,000
guilders. She donated it to the town of Karlovy
Vary 14 years later. As the Mill Spring wasn‘t rich
enough, it was collected again. Up to 1908 the
Mill Spring was situated under the level of its floor
and you had to descend three steps to reach it.
The wells which were done in the neighbour
hood of the Mill Spring proved the existence of
thermal water in the system of rifts. The temperature of the water was higher than 70°C. It was
necessary to collect the spring deep enough to
prevent its contamination. It also had to have the
right temperature -i.e. not too high. Now the well
of the Mill Spring is 24 metres deep. The Mill
Spring has always been very popular with patients who were waiting in long queues in front of
it, especially in the morning. In the past the Mill
Spring was bottled and it could be bought all
over the country.

Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán

aložení porcelánky v Lesově spadá do období vrcholného rozvoje porcelánové
výroby počátkem 20. století. Do historie českého porcelánu se zapisuje zla
tým písmem až po druhé světové válce, kdy v budovách zaniklé porcelánky
Lenhard vzniká v roce 1956 vývojové středisko Karlovarského porcelánu. Pracují
zde špičkoví modeláři, realizující nový estetický pohled na tvarování a vzhled.
Špičkový design přináší úspěch zejména na světové výstavě EXPO ‘58 v Bruselu,
kde vývojový tým obdržel Grand Prix a zlatou medaili.
Po roce 1995, s novým vlastníkem, vzniká nová koncepce výroby pod značkou Thun
Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Jeho produkce svými vysokými nároky na řemeslné
zpracování vyžaduje manufakturní či ateliérový způsob výroby. Práce unikátního
designu a vysoké estetické úrovně, zpravidla v limitovaných sériích, nesou rukopis
akademického sochaře Jiřího Laštovičky, člena Mezinárodní akademie keramiky.
Produkce Thun Studia tak sbírá řadu ocenění, je vyhledávaným artiklem sběratelů,
je zastoupena ve sbírkách muzeí.
Ve studiu se pravidelně konají doprovodné akce MFF či Mezinárodní konvicové
sympózium. Mimořádnou úroveň a kvalitu práce zdejších mistrů potvrzují takové
zakázky, jakými jsou servis pro prezidenta republiky a Pražský hrad, pro španělský
královský palác či zastupitelské úřady v zahraničí.

ie Gründung der Porzellanfabrik in Lesov fällt in die Zeit der Höchstent
wicklung der Porzellanerzeugung am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der
Historie des tschechischen Porzellans begann sie erst nach dem zweiten
Weltkrieg eine wichtige Rolle zu spielen, nachdem in den Gebäuden der ehemali
gen Porzellanfabrik Lenhard ein Designer-Zentrum der Firma Karlovarský porcelán
gegründet worden war. Es arbeiten hier Top-Designers, die ein neues ästhetisches
Herantreten an die Formung und das Aussehen durchsetzten. Das Top-Design
brachte Erfolge vor allem auf der Weltausstellung EXPO ‘58 in Brüssel, wo das Team
den Grand Prix und eine goldene Medaille erhielt.
Nach dem Jahre 1995 mit einem neuen Besitzer, entstand eine neue Konzeption
der Produktion unter der Marke Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Wegen der ho
hen Ansprüche an die handwerkliche Verarbeitung erfordert diese Produktion eine
Manufaktur oder ein Studio. Die Arbeiten von einzigartigem Design und hohem
ästhetischen Standard zumeist in limitierten Serien, tragen die Handschrift des

a kademischen Bildhauers Jiří Laštovička, des Mitglieds der Internationalen
Akademie der Keramik. Die Produktion des Studios Thun sammelt zahlreiche Preise
und ist ein beliebter Artikel von Sammlern. Sie ist auch in den Sammlungen vieler
Museen vertreten.
Im Studio finden regelmässig die zum Internationalen Filmfestival gehörenden
Veranstaltungen oder das Internationale Kannensymposium statt. Solche
Bestellungen wie das Service für den Präsidenten der Tschechischen Republik und
die Prager Burg, für die spanische Königsburg oder Vertretungsbehörden im
Ausland bestätigen den aussergewöhnlichen Standard und Qualität der Arbeit hie
siger Meister.

he foundation of the porcelain factory in Lesov falls into the period of the
boom in porcelain production in the early 20th century. It was only after World
War II that it started to play an important role in the history of Czech porcelain
after a development centre of the company Karlovarský porcelán had been esta
blished in the buildings of the former porcelain factory Lenhard in 1956. Top mo
dellers who worked here put a new aesthetic view of shaping and appearance into
practice.
Top design brought success especially at the world exhibition EXPO ‘58 in Brussels
where the team won the Grand Prix and a gold medal.
After 1995, with a new owner, a new conception of production with the brand name
Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán came into being. Owing to its high demands for
craftsmanship, its products have to be made either in a manufacture or in a studio.
The work of unique design and high aesthetic quality, usually in limited series,
bears the handwriting of the academic sculptor Jiří Laštovička, a member of
the International Academy of Ceramics. That is why the products of the Thun studio
get a number of awards, is popular with collectors and represented in the collec
tions of museums.
Supporting events of the International Film Festival or the International
Jug Symposium are regularly held in the studio. Such orders like the service for
the President of the Czech Republic, for the Prague Castle, the Spanish royal palace
or diplomatic corps abroad confirm the exceptional quality and standard of local
masters’ work.
