MOSAIC Polar bears are the largest bears in the world. Adults1 weigh from 295 kg to 490 kg and are 2.5-3 m long. Males are larger than females. They live only around the icy Arctic Ocean and go along the coastline2 looking for food. Their favourite food is the seal3, dead or alive. They have a very good sense of smell and can sniff4 dead animals from far away and can find seals in their dens5 beneath the snow. They also eat dead whales, walruses, arctic foxes, but if necessary, even plants and berries. The polar bear's thick oily fur is from white to yellowish. Their skin is black to absorb heat, and under it is a fat layer of about 10 cm. That is why they are able to swim and dive in the icy ocean. They paddle6 with their front legs and use their hind legs as rudders7. The female usually gives birth to two cubs in a winter den, where they stay for about three months up to the spring. The mother feeds them milk but she herself has nothing to eat! The young remain with their mothers for the next two years to learn all the polar-bear skills, especially hunting. It can spend many days at sea swimming long distances and hunting for food. ● When the polar bear comes ashore9, it usually walks hundreds of miles every day. It walks quite well on the slippery10 ice and snow because its large feet are like snowshoes11. ● The polar bear is so strong that it can kill an animal with only one blow12. 1. adult [àdalt] - dospûl˘, 2. coastline [k´ustlain] - pobfieÏí, 3. seal [si:l] - tuleÀ, 4. sniff [snif] - vyãenichat, 5. den [den] - doupû, 6. paddle [pàdl] pádlovat, 7. rudder [rad´] - kormidlo, 8. blind, deaf [blaind, def] - slep˘, hluch˘, 9. ashore [´'‰o:] - na bfieh, 10. slippery [slip´ri] - kluzk˘, 11. snowshoe [sn´u‰u:] - snûÏnice, 12. blow [bl´u] - úder. 13
