The Great Book of Graphic Arts from the second half of the 20th
Title of project: The Great Book of Graphic Arts from the second half of the 20th century The aims of project: A collection of the graphic oeuvre of artists from the second half of the 20th century whose works have been not put into the social circulation. Presentation of these arts currents which for various reasons had no chance to find their place in the mainstream of the 20th century arts. The idea lying behind our actions is to rescue from oblivion works and their authors who were excluded because of geopolitical reasons, to rescue from oblivion the works which were unluckily created too early or too late, to prevent what is nowadays often called “exclusion” and what concerns spatial and time peripheries. We want to find a place from which the graphic arts of the 21st century came and the place it heads to because, as some critics say, the graphic arts is now on the edge (Richard Noyce Printmaking on the Edge). The main project’s steps: 1. The review and verification of the oeuvre in the field of the graphic arts from the second half of the 20th century. 2. The selection of iconographic material taking into account: a) time and spatial peripheries of the graphic arts from the second half of the 20th century, b) geopolitical exclusion (East European countries behind the Iron Curtain) and aesthetic exclusion (the prevailing aesthetic doctrines which made it impossible for other forms and meanings to be seen, as they were different from those endorsed by culture and arts centres and their promoters – gallerymen). 3. Collecting iconographic material to create the Great Book of Graphic Arts from the Second Half of the 20th century in: a) an analogue form – screen print of bibliophilic quality with signed graphics of living artists, b) a digital form – a publication in the form of a multimedia presentation, c) the form of a website which will be a discussion forum concerning the future of graphic arts; it will also present the output of research inquiries concerning the problems of graphic arts in the second half of the 20th century, d) an academic work being the result of the collected iconographic material in the following fields: • innovative research concerning material and technological issues, • formal research penetrating the areas on the boundary between graphic arts and other media.
