BRUTALISM WORLDWIDE
Brutalism played with space and material, and architects designing in this style used raw concrete extensively. The name comes from
the French “béton brut”, and the style reached its peak in the mid-20th century. Beyond Czechoslovakia, the brutalist style was
represented with iconic designs by architects Le Corbusier (Maisons Jaoul in Neuilly near Paris), Moshe Safdie (Habitat complex in
Montreal, Canada), and Kenzo Tange (Cultural Centre in Nichinan). The most famous building of this idiosyncratic style is the Sydney
Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Hotel had a much-in-detail elaborated creative concept in place since
day one. The concept comprised of all sorts of artistic materials: wood, metal,
textile, ceramics and glass. The interior parts bring various historical styles
together in a harmonious manner. Contemporary art processes and resources
were employed by the architects to create a frame of the interior. On the other
hand, history manifested itself in the interior parts through various pieces of
equipment, furnishing and accessories. Many original features of the interior have
not survived as a result of modernisation, but others have been incorporated
into the present design.
Hotel měl už od začátku detailně propracovaný výtvarný koncept. Jsou v něm
zastoupeny všechny druhy uměleckých materiálů: dřevo, kov, textil, keramika a

For years, the corridor near the so-called Hunting Rooms (Congress hall)
had boasted posts carved from ash wood, a so-called “line of trees” by
Miroslav Hejný, symbolising the forest and natural wealth of the former
Czechoslovakia. A couple of these posts tower above the hotel lobby
today.

Markéta Zieglerová, reservations manager, is one of two employees present when the hotel opened. She started
at InterContinental in 1974, when it had opened on a trial basis. She has worked in three departments. After her
post of lift-operator/messenger – her “dream job” – was abolished, she embarked on a new career at switchboard.
Markéta tried her hand at the cashier/change office and ultimately settled at reservations, a post she had turned
down several times. There she was responsible for 11 staff, most of whom have been with her for 20 years. During
her career, Markéta has seen 9 directors come and go, and has been in five offices. She has spent all her working life
at InterContinental.
Vedoucí rezervačního oddělení Markéta Zieglerová patří mezi dva současné zaměstnance, kteří pamatují otevření
hotelu. Do InterContinentalu nastoupila už ve zkušebním provozu v srpnu 1974. Prošla třemi odděleními. Po zrušení
její „snové“ pozice výtahář-pochůzkář zahájila kariéru na centrále. Vyzkoušela si, co obnáší práce na pokladněsměnárně, aby ve finále zakotvila na tolikrát odmítaném místě vedoucí rezervačního oddělení. Na rezervacích jí
pod rukama prošlo jedenáct zaměstnanců, většina s ní zůstala dvacet let. Zažila všech devět ředitelů, vystřídala pět
kanceláří. InterContinentalu Prague zasvětila celý svůj aktivní život.

How did you get the job at InterContinental?

Back in the 1970s and 80s, the only places guests could enjoy salmon, lobster or langoustines were the InterContinental and EXPO. Such delicacies were
otherwise unavailable in socialist Czechoslovakia. At Zlatá Praha Restaurant, turtle soup and ham appetisers were very popular, as were chateaubriand steak
and karapulka pork cutlets as main courses. Waiters often put finishing touches to meals in front of the guests, and flambées were part of the daily ritual. The
most popular desserts were baked Alaska, custard with whipped cream and almonds. InterContinental cake with meringues is one of the few surviving dishes
today. The only difference is price. And while guests in 1975 could order Malosol caviar at EUR 1,60, identical to what they paid for duck with dumplings, these
days caviar is on the Zlatá Praha menu for EUR 164.

How did you start in InterContinental Prague?

I got my education in Kolín and afterwards I worked as a waiter

Pavel Hlinka was the head of InterContinental for almost 20 years. He started in the
mid-1980s, when the hotel was at a high point, and witnessed the transformation
brought about in 1989, and the incoming tourism boom in the 1990s. Even today, when
he meets his former colleagues, they always address him as “Mr Director”. For many

InterContinental is the first hotel in Prague to keep bees on the roof and produce its own
honey. Guests can sample it for breakfast in the Primátor Restaurant. In summer, the number
of bees reaches 400,000. Chief Executive Miroslav Kubec is responsible for harvesting the
honey three times a year, and he and his colleagues have now gathered over 150 kilograms,
which is one third of the hotel’s needs. The public can gain free access to the roof to see the
bees, which are now housed in six hives.
